[Q] Photo app of N5 takes photos os a larger area then what is shown on the preview - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I noticed this odd thing with the Nexus 5 camera and searched over all different reviews and forums but could not find a single mention of it.
When I take a photo with the Nexus 5 native camera app, the photo taken will always cover a larger area then what was seeing in the preview. For example, Lets say you want to take a photo of your monitor screen and (regardless of using the zoom or not) you position the phone so the borders of the monitor cannot be seen in the photo. Once you snap the photo you will notice you can see the border of the monitor and some... the resulting photos always cover a larger area then what is seen on the phone.
Has anyone noticed this or am I missing something?
Thanks

Resolution. The camera resolution is superior to your screen resolution. Compare the screen spec. to any full res shot details to see the difference.

Screen is 16:9 but the camera sensor is 4:3.
If you drop the camera down to 2 mpx widescreen, what is in the screen will all be photo

Thanks guys for clarifying. It makes sense. I didn't think about it as somehow this wasn't an issue with my old Note2 even though the screen resolution was lower, with the same 8mpx camera.

Depends if it was taking widescreen pictures or not.

The Nexus 5 also has a wider angle lens than most phones too. That might have something to do with it as well.

i had this finding too not long ago.. at the expense of some important photos of precious moments "ruined" by this mismatch of screen preview and actual resolution..
and my way out is to use apps that handle this situation..
e.g. "Snap Camera HDR" has a "Preview Cropping" setting.. when this setting is turned off, the screen preview shows exactly as the current resolution ur photo is set at (with some blank margins at left/right or top/down sides to cater for the resolution differences..)
im just a happy user of this app and am in no way associated with it.. there is free version in the play store and xda here so u may give it a try..

I haven't been impressed with the photos at all. Most of them are blurry. I know nothing about camera settings on this phone. Is there a guide out there somewhere?
Thanks!

The camera sucks. Sucks defined as: takes blurry pictures in daylight. A total fail. The video is pretty good 'tho.
I love the camera. Takes better photos than my 3gs.

I've been using the camera a lot and it's been really nice for me, for a phone camera, and I'm used to dslr's...
Side arrow>Gear (Settings)
Camera:
Page 3/5, check Anti-Shake
Page 4/5, check Auto contrast (can't remember if that is a default)
Wrench:
Just a personal preference, I set Review to 2 seconds to see the picture after it's taken.
Other than that, you just have to make sure the camera's focused on what you select before taking the picture, and it should be fine.
Make sure u tap on the screen to focus on the area u want to take the picture of.

I have to agree with the OP, here. The images aren't so much blurry as they are highly compressed for some reason. I wonder if there's a way to lower the JPEG compression. It's like the images look good on the display, but when you look at them on your computer or (in the rare occasion) an iPhone 4's RetinaDisplay, you really see the compression artifacts. The video is not much better.
There must be a way to solve this.
I know it sounds obvious, but seriously make sure the camera lense isn't smudged before you start taking pictures. It's flush with the back of the phone and so really really easy to smudge with your fingers while handling the phone.
I was noticing how some pictures were insanely crisp and others were blurry in the same lighting conditions and everything, and I am pretty sure it's because of the lens being smudged. Just throwing that out there.

Camera Aspect Ratio

When taking pics they all are in the 4:3 aspect ratio (both in 2D & 3D). Anybody knows a way to take pics that fill the screen (without post cropping them) when beeing watched (like the videos do)?
tnx

I suspect this is just the simple fact that the sensors are 4:3 ratio, when shooting video the sensor probably just ignores so many pixels at the top and the bottom to fake the aspect ratio.
So if you want 16:9 then just frame your photos as if the top and bottom is not there, then crop them on the PC later. You can probably even crop them on the phone itself but I have not looked into it myself as I do not see that it matters. You are always best keeping them 4:3 in case you want to have them printed later.
Better to have the option on the phone itself
Hello Alex,
I was using the n900 as well before i bought the o3d. I agree with you that the camera quality was much better on the n900.
And it was possible to choose the 16:9 resolution - although i think the sensor on the n900 was 4:3 as well.
in between i had the atrix for 1 month or so - it also offered to shoot in 16:9, but this one was not 3d ;-).
I think it would be great to be able to see the pics just taken as a "screen filling experience"! Cropping by hand or on the PC is an option, but it would be more convenient to have it as an option on the phone, to take pictures in the original screen ratio.
thanks for your reply anyway
heiwid
There are a few more options in lgCamera and it also lets you record video at higher bitrates.
It seems a bit twitchy since V10d firmware though, you might have to switch between the image viewer and back before the preview starts working.
Still photos still come out very over-processed though, so I am guessing this is something only LG can improve or someone hacking around with Android itself.
[EDIT]
Actually be careful with that app, it just locked up my phone. Annoying as it seemed fine firmware V10b.
Thanks for the hint.
I tried it - worked - but no 16:9 settings as well except 720x480.
But this is not an option for taking pics.
I think you are right, Only LG could change it.
It looks like the view of the software engineers @ LG is not as wide as the one of the hardware engineers ;-).
That LG camera app is as buggy as hell, total crap.

ProCapture Camera app takes better Pictures

Reading all the reviews the one thing most of them take issue with is the camera on the Moto X. There is something very common between them, the inconsistency from picture to picture. Most say the Moto X is capable of taking good pictures but you need to put up with several bad ones as well. If you take the info from the reviews it's not a "Camera" issue as much as a "Software" issue. The timing of the auto focus to the shutter seems off as well as possibly the color & sharpness of the pictures.
I own a Nexus 4 currently and it doesn't take the greatest pictures either with the AOSP camera. One thing I have noticed is Cyanogenmod's Focal camera app takes better pictures. I tried taking pictures with AOSP, Focal and ProCapture app and comparing them. While I am not using the paid version of ProCapture the pictures are sharper and the color is spot on vs AOSP and Focal, even though ProCapture is taking 3.2mp shots and AOSP/Focal are taking 8.0mp pictures.
Link to ProCapture(Free) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.neaststudios.procapture.free&hl=en
I know someone using ProCapture with their new Droid Maxx and says it has made a big difference in the image quality. This should obviously translate over to the Moto X as well. The full version is a few bucks and if someone is willing to purchase it and post their results for everyone that could help lots of X owners out.
Here are three pictures I took today and you can see how ProCapture's are sharper and the color is not washed out. First picture is AOSP, second Focal and last one is ProCapture.
I like the ProCapture app. I have the premium version. I will have to take some test shots to compare the two. However, I cannot find anyway of changing which app is launched when you use the twist gesture to open the camera. Every time I do it, it opens the stock camera. I have made the ProCapture app the default when swiping from the lockscreen but that does not apply to the gesture. Any ideas?
X
edit: One thing I wish the ProCapture had was an HDR setting.
HDR setting is in Focus/Scene option menu(second down on the left).
I'm very interested in seeing side by side shots you take. If you can take a variety of shots, in bright sunlight, the sky(good for color comparisons), low light, indoors, close ups, action shots, etc with both camera's and post them here.
As far as the gesture opening the app that's something you can't probably change with the stock software. Once developers start making rom's & mods for the Moto X I'm sure the gesture will be able to be reassigned to another app.

That's a lot of pictures. I will see what I can do.
As for the HDR setting, is it called something other than HDR? Cause it is not listed under the Focus/Scene option. I have the following:
Focus > Auto, Continuous, Infinity
Scene > Auto, Action, Portrait, Landscape, Night, Night portrait, Theatre, Beach, Snow, Sports, Sunset, Steady photo, Fireworks, Party, Candlelight, Backlight
Color effect > None, Mono, Sepia, Negative, Solarize, Posterize, Aqua, Blackboard, Whiteboard
Any comparison pictures you can take will be helpful for everyone. It can show its a software issue that can be fixed.
I'm using the free version of ProCapture, here is the HDR setting.

Xious1 or someone else give ProCapture a try and post pictures taken with it and the stock camera. I don't have a Moto X yet so I just know how much of a difference it has made on my Nexus 4 and my wife's Razr i.

I'm really not so sure I see much of a difference. Here's my samples:
Moto X Stock Camera:
Moto X ProCapture Free:
Moto X Focal:
Olympus E-PL1 with M.Zuiko 17mm F2.8 lens:
iPhone 5:
Nexus 4 Stock Camera:
Nexus 7 (2013) Stock Camera:
This is done with zero tweaking at all, straight out of the cameras. Even the mediocre Nexus 4 camera makes the Moto X look bad.

I understand testing the app without tweaking, but the reason I did a search for moto x & Procapture was simply, the X doesn't give users the ability to access settings like white balance, exposure, etc. I'm currently on an S3, and was set on either an X or a Droid Maxx, but the camera quality was holding me back. To get decent pics on my S3 I have to play with those settings, but with the stock Moto camera software, I wouldn't have that option. Now if it's possible to get rid of the purple tint that some reviewers are seeing, or give it better contrast, I wouldn't be so apprehensive. But I thought the point of getting an app like that was so you could tweak the settings to get it closer to the better cameras out there.
ProCapture allows many more options to tweak your shots. I used backlight mode this weekend to take pics were my daughter was standing in front of a large glass wall of windows with the sun coming through. With out back light mode you could hardly see her, with it on she popped to the front of the image. This is on my Nexus 4.
Now if you haven't heard Moto is pushing out an update to T-Mobile users right now that fixes the camera issues. The pictures side by side show a dramatic change in quality.

Downside is can't use the cool wrist flick feature thing.
i agree, procapture is a very good camera, expecially to take panorama pics.
but in my opinion the big limit of this app is when you play with options and effect, because, while stock's camera reset values when you launch the app, procapture doesn't do that, but only for exposure (if you check it in settings).
so if you play with values when you launch in another time the app you have to reset all the values by yourself. i sent an email to the dev to make the app reset values when you lanch it.
I used Procapture far a while and was very pleased with it. Had you given FV-5 Camera try? I use it for now and for now i stay with it as it makes for me the best images.

You can do a separate exposure and focus though. I used to enjoy ProCamera but I think I can produce better shots with Camera FV-5.
Wow I just saw this post. I was about to give up on my Moto X camera and call it a loss for indoor photos.
Camera FV-5 changed that. This thing is great. Once you read through the manual to figure out adjustments, this thing takes great photos.

yes i use it since my RAZR. You have to read the manual (pdf) to get knowledge of the full potential of the app. The developer is releasing in some weeks a beta app for taking videos
by the way, there was a big bug when taking photos in portrait with Moto X. The images freezes. This was solved in the last update.

Camera App painfully slow & poor motion shots

I am currently using a Galaxy Note Edge on Verizon (KitKat) and I am having serious issues with the Camera (which is supposed to be on-par or even better than one found in the iPhone 6).
I suspect these are software issues, so I'm hoping someone can tell me whether these issues get better with Lollipop (or whether there is an alternative camera app that is better optimized for the Note Edge)
The two most annoying things:
1) Unacceptably Slow Camera: When I take a picture with the Samsung Camera App, it takes at least 5-6 full seconds to see the picture I just took after tapping the thumbnail of said picture. It doesn't matter whether HDR is on or off, or whether I use the camera from the lock screen or home screen. I noticed that the delay is not as bad, but still bad, after taking a few pictures (it's then down to a still painfully slow 2-3 seconds)
2) Motion Pictures: The pics look fantastic, unless you have actual human beings in your picture that make movements or blink with their eyes. I'm not looking to take photos of race cars at dawn, but it would be nice to be able to take pictures of friends in a restaurant, for example.
Why can't the app chose a higher shutter speed for pictures with humans/moving objects in them? I'd rather have a slightly darker/grainier picture than a picture where faces are blurred like in the film "The Ring"....
I cannot comprehend how anyone would ship a flagship phone with these 2 issues, which are clearly software issues. SOMEONE at Samsung must have noticed this, no? It has a top-of-the-line quadcore processor and 3GB of RAM, for crying out loud. How is it possible that an iPhone 4 takes better 'motion' shots and accesses photos faster?
I know there are plenty of other Camera Apps available, but is there one that is perhaps optimized to address issue #2? This must be possible to improve with software optimization.
Same here. I don't remember it always being this slow.
I find it so slow to open the camera from the lock screen that I hardly ever bother. I took great pics with my lg g3, simply because the camera was super easy and fast to start.

Front Camera Image Zoomed in

Hello, I've been an XDA lurker for a while, starting with my Galaxy S4. I just recently got a OnePlus 6, and love it so far, but this one problem is kind of irritating me.
When using the front camera (both in the camera app when not set to 4:3, and third party apps like snapchat), the picture looks very zoomed in). I'm guessing its because any other ratio is just a cropped version of 4:3.
The only way I can think to fix this is to force a different ratio for the camera to use, but I'm not sure if that is even possible.
Anyone else have this type of problem? Help would be much appreciated.
I think its because the lense has a higher focal length... Nothing to do with ratio.
So is there any way to work around this so that the front image isn't so zoomed in?
For video? It's because of their stabilization

I mean in the pictures. Like if you're taking a selfie, the viewfinder shows the image as very zoomed in (like your face covers the image if you're a normal distance away), and the picture is taken like that.
When you shoot with 4:3 you have all the picture of the sensor. When you shoot with 16:9 or other you don't use all the sensor but it crops the image to be in that ratio. And you see the zoom. Take a picture with 4:3 and zoom with your fingers to see a picture of 16:9 shot. It's the same.
