I RARELY tether, maybe 5 times briefly since I've owned the phone, but I just got the letter from AT&T stating I will be auto enrolled in the 4gb plan if I don't call.
So I called, they told me anyone who tethers after October 31st will be auto enrolled in the 4gb Tether plan and will lose Unlimited data.
What was new to me was that using your phone to play Google Music/Pandora VIA BT to your car or stereo is considered tethering by AT&T, wow...
Can they actually tell if I am using Google Music via phone or Google Music paired to my car? I use this a decent amount, pretty annoyed by this crap policy.
Sprint is looking better all the time
Bluetooth anything is not tethering.
Tethering is strictly sharing your phones internet connection with another device via wifi or USB.

The words from the AT&T rep were:
Using your phone to stream music via Bluetooth or Cable to your stereo or Car are considered tethering under AT&T Terms.
Sounded like BS to me but I don't want to lose my unlimited data or pay for tethering lol.
That seems patently absurd. I would hope whoever you were talking to was uninformed. Really its just a bluetooth audio output, and I guess the car also controls the phone(?). It's definitely not sharing the internet though, some bs

WAIT, by cable!!! HAHAHAHAH, so by using headphones I am tethering my phone to my head? Why would ATT care if I use a cable to connect to my stereo, but more importantly what standing would they have from preventing you. The government needs to step in and make all this tethering stuff end. The internet is the internet, no matter what device uses it.
I half way wonder if it may be more inline to assume that they think he is tethering due to the amount of Data he is using.
All I know is, they will play a damn hard time to get me for Tethering.
Most ATT reps are dumb. They dont have any technical knowledge. Stick wit xda forums.

I think the only way they are catching people is by the separate IP address the tethered device has to pull.

Before you keep spreading misinformation, I'd recommend calling AT&T and asking "If I use a bluetooth earpiece will I be charged for tethering?"
Because one of my friends is a rep and he's getting a big laugh out of these two threads.

Pretty sure asking a question can not be called "spreading misinformation". I am just sharing what I was told, and apparently what many others were told.
2ndly the rep straight up said Bluetooth earpieces/headsets were fine. It was connecting your phone to stream audio over a stereo or car that they are calling Tethering.
3rdly you will see in the AT&T Terms of use under data, section 6.2
Furthermore, plans (unless specifically designated for tethering usage) cannot be used for any applications that tether the device (through use of, including without limitation, connection kits, other phone/smartphone to computer accessories, BLUETOOTH® or any other wireless technology) to Personal Computers (including without limitation, laptops), or other equipment for any purpose.

With such a vague definition of tethering, Streaming via BT to a stereo DOES fall under the last line.
I have no doubt it is BS and I am sure it will be fine, but when has that ever stopped AT&T from trying to use scare tactics and lies to get you to pay more money?

Not really... "any applications that tether the device through use of...BLUETOOTH® or any other wireless technology"... The key words here are "applications that tether" (specifically meaning, Sharing the data connection from the phone).
This has absolutely nothing to do with using your car as an expensive headset (for all intents and purposes). The AT&T reps are a bunch of untrained monkeys who don't know what they are talking about when they read this and just assume that all Bluetooth use is considered tethering.

If he is truly a rep and between the two of you, can't understand what customer service is explaining to us when we call in, then I am glad he is not my rep.
As previously stated SEVERAL times, if you are streaming live media such as Pandora/Google Music/Netflix through a bluetooth headset you are considered tethering. Did that say anywhere that you can't use a BT earpiece?? NO, it says don't stream live media from it. Furthermore, the customer service rep advised me to set Google Music and other apps to play music OFFLINE through my bluetooth headset.
If you want to jump onto threads to be an ass, instead of an asset, find somewhere else to play, huh?
I'm a CSR for AT&T I've never heard of this but ill look into it and find out the fact on it here in about 30 minutes. It sounds fishy but we will see.

If you have the time to take your head out of your ass, you might read that some of the claims are stating that they've tethered and are just now receiving notices and anecdotally linking it to their bluetooth usage. That's why I said before that he should call with a specific question.

Its not available on the market anymore because Verizon is attempting to stop free wireless tethering. Check this link for a quick blog about it. Apparently AT&T has started warning its customers to stop tethering if not paying for it. Now it looks like Verizon is starting to follow along with AT&T.
Exactly the reason I also have a copy of the apk on my SD card.
the answer is yes, verizon blocks certain apps like tether apps and hotspot. ATT does the same thing. long live AOSP phones!!

I've noticed some other apps are missing as well. Notably I can't seem to find "Gensoid" the Sega Genesis emulator. So, if Verizon can block you from downloading certain applications, can they see what applications you've already installed? I thought that information was between the End-User and Google, and not Verizon. Also, can they remote-wipe the application? If Google can remote-wipe, is there a way to disable that functionality if you're a rooted user? It kind of pisses me off that Verizon can have say over what I download from the Android Market.
On an otherwise off-topic note, what other App Stores are there (Amazon I know of) and are they safe/trustworthy to use?

AT&T contacted me via SMS to let me know they were watching. I was utilizing TetherMe via Cydia. Was I being a data hog? No. I was using 3GB to 5GB of bandwidth on my unlimited plan. What was my usage prior to tethering. Still in that ball park.
When I called in to inquire (I played dumb), they explained that they knew I was tethering. The man on the other line was patient despite me asking stupid questions to try and throw him off. But I firmly believe that they are only after users on the Unlimited plan who are tethering.
They sent this SMS to me last week. In less than 4 days I switched carriers. Each time I called to get my number ported, the AT&T rep acting frantically wanted to know why. I was a 15yr customer. I just grinned to the Verizon rep.

If it wasn't already obvious based on the type of traffic you are sending/receiving (craploads of torrents, p2p, etc), they could potentially verify source based on data packets sent/received.
Browsers generally send data that shows what they're running on as well through the user agent, though you can always change that.

Is it even legal for them to monitor your phone in such a way? The ROM bit, that is.
Sent from my SCH-I510 using XDA App
VZW knows because I doubt that your phone has IE to browse the web, or Safari for that matter, and other such things can tell them quite easily if you are tethering or not, disregarding the amount of data transferred. Add in the amount of data transferred, and you kind of stick out like a sore thumb when you're tethering.
Also, the hotspot monitoring stuff on the phone doesn't do anything besides watch to see if you are tethering illegally or not, so I'm pretty sure that if you did try to press the legality point of view, they'd come back and dig into whether or not you were tethering, cause odds are, if you are bringing up this point, it is for a reason.
I came from the Droid X and with the GB update and the baseband update they can now tell if you are tethering. Verizon warned the devs and the devs took notice for the moto roms. Those devs no longer provide nor will endorse root tethering apps. There was something about liability issues so the devs are abiding by Verizon's wishes. They are telling all that if you want to tether, pay the monthly fee for the service. Therefore; when the Charge gets the official GB update with baseband, tether at your own risk if you are not paying for it.
Sent from my SCH-I510 using XDA App
IMNUTS is correct. When you are using a tethering app, your data packets are preceeded with a special code that identifies that packet as being tethered. Verizon is now monitoring these. Black Hat had a hack that yoy could change that code, but they removed that a long time ago for obvious reasons. They now suggest not using it and just pay the money for tethering. This is why devs are no longer including the root tethering apps to give free tethering with their roms anymore. Too much risk to them personally for something that most do for fun.
Sent from my SCH-I510 using XDA App
VZ most definitely can tell when you are tethering, though by using custom roms/kernels and using disguised tethering apps it just makes it less obvious... I doubt they're really gonna care tbh unless you're hitting some ridiculous number like say 30+ gigs a month, cuz seriously just using the phone normally it shouldn't be that high. From there they can choose to throttle your data speeds or drop your unlimited data plan altogether... also there is no way around this as they block/slow data server-side so its under their control
tl;dr they can almost 100% tell you're tethering and might take action, but probably won't unless you're retarded and pulling in a hundred gigs a month in PHONE data
I only tether when I'm on business or somewhere for a while that doesn't have wifi. So I use less than 2g of data a month. I doubt they'd hunt me down, some of these people who tether 15+ gigs a month may have issues soon.
nobody happen to read the pdf posted in the comments of that site? Apparently Verizon cannot restrict you of downloading a tether program and using the data as such. When Verizon purchased the 700mhz spectrum for their LTE service they agreed they would not " deny, limit, or restrict the ability of
[its] customers to use the devices and applications of their choice". To me that sounds like Verizon is stepping outside their rights... However we end users agreeing to their terms and services might negate that all together.

true, but fact is they are not following their agreement to the company they purchased the service from. Also, in verizon's contract they state if they change their service in anyway that has a negative impact on your account\service you are free to opt out of their contract free of charge (so I read back when tier data was being set forth). That being said blocking tethering might be a plausible reason for early termination of contract, legally.

Not necessarily... The contract's terms still have to be legal, and their conduct regarding that contract has to be legal.
If you sign a contract to kill someone wanting to commit suicide and you follow through with it, you are still lawfully going to be tried for murder.
Verizon is still subject to privacy laws, regardless of what the contract says. I think even if they know you are tethering, which at this point seems more like an educated guess, I don't know if they can really be too audacious with reprimanding people. There's a whole mess of legal implications stemming from the aforementioned agreement when they purchased that spectrum that I think they're not willing to taunt just yet, if ever.
There is a kernel module that is in the code that specifies tethering or not. You can't use wifi without the module, as I already tried. There is a by-pass that is being used on the Fascinate, but we haven't had any confirmation about whether it works or not, and I'm not going to go through the trouble of implementing an un-proven work around just so people can tether illegally. If you want to tether, take the risk of getting caught, or pay $30.

2) A software change was made to support the latest requirement for IPV6 in EHRPD
3) A software change was made to address an issue causing a audio screeching sound to be heard when users have an active application playing in the back ground and you receive and answer an incoming call
4) A software change was made to address an issue that was causing a continuous noise or notification tone to be heard that started during a phone power up and would not stop until you pulled down the status bar in some rare cases
5) A software change was made to the calculations used for determining what is displayed to better reflect the signal available.
6) A software change was made to address an issue causing the device to drop down to 3G service earlier then it should in some cases
7) A software change was made to address an issue causing devices to show no signal and roaming when a specific PRL file (I5103) is loaded on the device

My layman's reading was that it applied to everyone, but the main point was that they could not try to block 3rd party tethering apps anymore. Could explain why WiFi Tether showed up in the Market. From my reading the tiered vs. unlimited point was mainly used by Verizon as a defense.

My using the term "block" was incorrect. Essentially, they can still charge the tethering fee to those on unlimited plans...

I keep thinking I'm going to get a new phone as soon as I can. Dwitherell is doing a great job on developing roms but Imnuts is not doing kernels for the charge any more. Development for the Charge is almost at a standstill. I'm not excited about FP5 at all. I'm never going to run stock software in a smart phone. There's just way too much bloatware.
So? Root it and remove the bloatware. I haven't installed DW's rom because my phone is critical for work and I spend too much time at work and commuting to deal with any extra issues. But I've got to say that it's been damn hard not too bite the bullet and flash it. I know it's awesome.
I've debloated it and added extended battery. 4g coverage is good and don't need gps. Yeah, we'll never see ICS or JB on this phone but it works for those that don't have to suffer the squealing.
It's first generation 4g. I don't expect the world and my laptop can more than handle anything this phone can't.
Seriously - you can see the difference just rooted and debloated. Try it.
Still Charged Up

Since I'm stuck on Sprint for a little while longer, I have to use my phone to tether my TF700T unto the internet. However, it doesn't seem like that's working, as when I plug my phone into my tablet's dock, nothing happens. Is there no innate support for this, internet over USB, at all? I know there are USB-to-Ethernet adapters, but this is a little different.
Depending on your phone you could also try wifi or Bluetooth tethering.

Yes, but I also don't want to be broadcasting a direct connection to the internet. Hence, USB.
Why are you worried about broadcasting? Just encrypt your connection, don't broadcast your SSID, and only allow your tablet's MAC to connect. There's no way anyone else will poach (or even see) your hotspot like this, if that's what you're worried about...
Because I'm trained with CEH and Net+ certifications and have been paranoid since the age of 3. Humor me.
Usb tethering does not work in any of the transformers, there have been a few work arounds i believe but nothing stable, the only stable way is as suggested, Wifi or bluetooth, and being an Internet security Professional my self, With all that was suggested would work, for sprint look up a program, Wifi tether for root users, this allows everything they suggested, though I do understand the leakage, best i can suggest is either a VPN tunnel if this has been implemented in the tf700 as it had to be user cooked for the tf201

Are you a spy or something? Lol. I really wouldn't worry so much about it. With the precautions I mentioned only a super computer could hack in quickly, and since it'll be a mobile connection you'll be just fine (just be on the lookout for any suspicious vans following you)
With WPA2 PSK encryption even the most powerful desktop would take a few days to crack the key... it could be done, but someone would REALLY want to. Awful lot of work for free 4G internet, that they'd have to follow you, and you'd be notified if they did connect and could just turn off/change the password.

This ^^, and add to this the fact that anyone going to such lengths to just get a free mobile connection will probably either kidnap and torture you for your WPA(2) key, or will have access to 140 botnets all over the world anyway and is on the verge of taking over entirely.
Now I get to think of it, it might also be a nerdy no-lifer, and since the world is teeming with those, you might actually run into a non-trivial risk, hehehe.
There's a few statements wrong with all of these posts, namely, that if you think Sprint doesn't have a backdoor logging all of your info to the government you are mistaken. That being said, they aren't looking for warez or the pr0n you download.
There was a tunneling program I had a while ago, if you need it let me know I will see if I can find it. If you are using the ICS version for your E4GT you will want to change your phone within the wifi tether programs options to Samsung Galaxy Nexus CDMA/LTE in order for it to work. Foxfi doesn't work on the ICS versioins yet. From what it sounds like you don't need to be told to use WPA2 and no SSID and only your MAC addresses accepted. Foxfi does alert the user when a connection is made by a large beep or vibration, I can't remember if the wifi tether does ( i do believe it is an option however). If you made your static ip range only have one address, that could probably help as well. Wish I could be more useful

A backdoor isn't for logging, and paranoid a bit? I can guarantee you Sprint isn't sending all of it's users data info to the government. That would be a HUGE amount of data and they're not going to incur that sort of cost. The government has it's own filters satellite/ground transmissions pass though, it's not the providers responsibility to capture that info...

More than likely, it's 3G internet the person would be trying to steal since LTE is only available currently in Kansas City and WiMax is only able in limited areas, and some are spotty at that.
I'm well aware of trying to be careful. But I don't see it as much of worry as s security breach issue. I think he's more worried about Sprint finding out he's doing the hotspot service without paying for it, which is a violation of the TOS and could terminate his contract and give him an early termination fee.

If this doesn't apply to Sprint now, it will soon. The FCC has banned charging for tethering!!! Check this: http://news.cnet.com/8301-1035_3-57...ns-fcc-tethering-settlement-means-to-you-faq/
http://bgr.com/2016/01/05/eff-t-mobile-throttling-video-youtube/
The EFF conducted its independent*tests*and found that T-Mobile throttles every video download (including streaming) to 1.5Mbps, which means YouTube will effectively play only at 480p quality. The organization wrote in a post that T-Mobile is applying its throttling indiscriminately to all video streaming, not just YouTube.

You can turn off BingeOn by logging into your tmo account, navigating to Profile, then media settings.
I have a 20 buck grandfathered unlimited plan and I checked and I had BingeOn enabled

Just checked, it was enabled on my account as well. I also have an unlimited plan, not sure why I would want anything throttled. Thanks for the heads up.

Its a good deal for users that do not have unlimited but it was just kind of implemented in a shady fashion.
I will say videos I couldnt get to play on 1080 (without tons of buffer) are now consistently playing with no issues since turning off BingeOn
Thanks for the heads up. I was frustrated this morning trying to stream YouTube videos this morning with all the buffering even when my speed test was pulling 20 down 10 up

Binge On is turned on by default to all customers no matter what data plan they have. As far as the EFF is concerned they have not finished their investigation. The article written by Android Central writer was bias and bull ****. Binge On is a great service for many customers. My sister watches Netflix and Hulu all day and not charged on her data plan. The Quality of video is damn good. I have unlimited data plan so I checked out of Binge On the very first day it went live. My T-Mobile service is great, super fast data, very strong signal, 5 bars all the time inside my house. Thank You T-Mobile, Thank You John Legere.

Whoa whoa no one is trying to tear down the Supreme Leader Legere. Simply spreading knowledge.
Problem is unlimited users do not need to have BingeOn activated, there is no point. I will say since turning mine off I have noticed a huge difference in the traffic pushed through the Youtube app. I literally could not stream anything above 720 on my mobile signal. My automatic would never default above 720 if I was lucky. Yesterday I let it run for about 5 videos each one defaulting to 1080. HTML5 sites I had to let buffer forever now have no issues for me.
As far as the article you are talking about, haven't seen it. I cited the article from BGR talking about EFF.
Liking a company doesn't mean you need to implicitly agree with and blindly follow everything they do.
It's a great functionality (for tiered data plan users), just implemented in a poor way. If they are truly charging a premium for bandwidth then they are becoming what they accuse everyone else of. Not to mention it sets a dangerous precedent for the internet overall.
Legere said in the press conference that BingeOn was turned on by default and later that day TMo published an article in their "How to" section as to how to turn it off. Don't people watch the press conferences? Or am I alone in that nerdy activity?
Omfg I need to kiss you right on the face.
This is amazing I haven't even been able to stream 720p in so damn long.
And I'll be damned. 20 minutes after changing this boom 1440p is actually streaming smoothly

It's not about knowing how to turn it off as much as knowing that it would throttle data from sources other than what t-mobile is partnered with. If it didn't throttle other video data what need would anyone have to turn it off?
The instructions were included just in case.
Thanks for the insight on the whole thing though

So one thing I figured out, not sure if anyone has already mentioned this but I just got Chromecast but the WiFi I use at home is a Comcast open hotspot so Chromecast won't work on it. In order to use Chromecast I have to use my wifi hotspot on my phone but I noticed if I cast Netflix from my tablet while using the hotspot it doesn't go against my data. Has anyone else heard of this?
When Binge On was first advertised T-Mobile said YouTube had a problem with the technology T-Mobile used in telling what bandwidth was being used by YouTube Videos. That was the reason YouTube didn't join in on Binge On right away. That was a work in progress. I have no problems with this being a Net Neutrality issue, nothing is forced on the customer or charged extra to the customer. T-Mobile has changed the Mobile Industry in a very short time. Most of the complaining is coming from people who aren't even T-Mobile customers. Trolls from the other Carriers are running as far as they can with a very small hiccup in this service. It's a very funny world.

No one is trying to talk down the character of T-Mobile. And even if anyone was, they are big boys and have lawyers that can defend their honor. Your bill wont get cheaper by white knighting for them.
If you want to turn off BingeOn then do it, if you don't then then don't. It's really that simple.
There is a saying about the government, if you aren't upset then you arent paying attention. I equate that to just because you are in favor of something, doesn't mean you should be naive about it.

I'd only imagine the Binge On also applies to tether, and maybe even a work around if you ever needed to show Netflix or another Binge On participant on more than two devices.
I do know that if you have unlimited data, when you tether your phone netflix etc. Won't count towards your tether usage

I think that's awesome for someone like me, because not being able to use Chromecast without a secured network basically ruins the idea of it if I have to use all my tethering data just to watch stuff with it.
I'm not seeing my Netflix data included in my tether usage, but my rom is modded to hide as much as possible, short of user agent detection....i also have unlimited, but without BingeOn, netflix can and will eat all 7gb of tether data in one night streaming. I've fallen asleep with it on and awoken to text messages from tmo telling me my hotspot allotment was GONE....yet Netflix still playing in 1080p as I'm reading it lol its because use agent detection can detect the platform Netflix is running on and if it's not mobile and BingeOn isn't enabled it'll eat your tether allotment almost immediately
Soooooo....yes, BingeOn does seem to be included on the hotspot data as well....but even if you exceed it and get throttled, if you use chrome and set it to mobile user agent, it'll still stream 1080p because it'll think it's mobile.....assuming you've used the unlimited tether mod that's been heavily discussed

I tethered with Binge On to my chromecast and none of my data showed up. What platform are you watching Netflix on?
