Speaker phone issue/ back light issue - HTC Inspire 4G

SO i have a issue, suddenly my phone has these two issues, it lights up randomly and everytime i make or receive a phone call and i answer my phone it goes directly to speaker phone... i did a full wipe 1.5 and re installed a new rom and still has these issues. any help or ideas? Really feel it has something to do with the locations app, seeing how it keep randomly pops up... any suggestions this is getting really annoying

You may have to manually do a full wipe and then reinstall. From clockwork do these steps
1. Wipe data/factory reset
2. Go to advanced and wipe dalvik.
3. Go to mounts and format system. 4. Install Rom of choice
If you still have issues after this then it may be something on your SD card. Backup music, pics and anything else from SD card and format it as fat32.
Make sure as well to read the forum that you got the Rom from and make sure its not a known issue.

Well i had a certain rom starting experiencing these issues so i switched roms, now i uninstalled locations, and locations launcher via titanium. but now my car mode pops up and i think that is what is doing it with the speaker phone and randomly lighting up, anyway to disable or uninstall car mode??? i can click it and disable it for 5 seconds then its back but still speaker phone wont turn off upon dialed or received calls.... ugh frustrating

Maybe its the car panel app. I know all of these kind of apps store settings in your SD card and doing a full wipe doesn't touch data on your SD. I would try formatting your SD card. Also restoring system apps through titanium backup can be problematic. Not sure if you are doing this, but if so be sure to only restore apps that you have downloaded from the market.

doing a full format now, then will manually do a fully wipe then re install, thanks for the help hope it works

speaker phone issue is now fixed although locations still pops up telling me no files are on my sd card and suggest to download them... scared that if i do im gonna have all the problems again???

It always says that when you first open locations. The files that it needs are just maps but they are huge files.

I do not use locations because its only a free version and if you want to use all the features you have to subscribe and it tacks onto your phone bill. Google maps is capable of all the same functions and works better imo.

You can use an app removal program from the market. This is a very weird problem. I wish I had more ideas for you but I'm stumped on this one.

well im looking in titanium and can't find anything relevant to car mode... what should i exactly be looking for to fully remove it?? I just switched to cm7 and my phone was working perfectly then i plugged in the phone to my computer and now it is back in car mode yet again.... i really dont need or want car mode any way to just delete it?? can someone point me in the right direction, Can't figure out why my phone wants to be in car mode all of a sudden all the time...

Error on startup.. Help greatly appreciated.

Hey guys.
I seem to be having an error message popup on my phone about 3/4 of the time once I reboot. (see attached image)
Usually hitting wait works, but sometimes i have to force close it.
I have JFs 1.41
I thought at first it was due to the fact that I removed several stock apps (amazon mp3, calculator & alarm clock)
I also removed my entire stock ringtones folder.
So I put everything back in its place.
However, I still have the same issue!
I also tried debugging with dalvik. Didn't get much...
Anyone know whats goin on?
TIA
EDIT: Also, just wondering if theres a way to reset the phone without losin all my apps. Other than backup, i'm trying to avoid installing all of em again ;0.
I get the same error on startup
Just to add my 2 cents... I have as well removed the Alarm Clock, and Amazon MP3, and the stock ringtones (but left the folders intact & put my own tones in). I am running JF1.41, and have never seen this message.
Did you do a Nandroid backup before you started messing with things? If so, you can simply restore that, otherwise.... You would have to re-install everything in order to do a factory reset.
Have you tried going to Manage Applications - Media Storage - and clearing the data?
I would try doing a full wipe of the phone and see if the problem continues.
Just my 2 cents

Yea I've tried clearing the data. Its not fixin it tho. I have several nandroid backups. I would do a wipe but wouldn't that get rid of my apps?
Thanks guys.
restoring a nandroid backup to a time when you didn't have this issue would be the best bet, you would only lose the changes you have made since that backup.

Well I had my apps and cache on my SDcard and after updating to JF 1.41 i had to do a wipe to get it to work, but after it was up and running I just replaced the mountd.conf and init.rc files and recreated the symolic links again and rebooted and all my programs were back. Just thought I would share cause this way pretty much worked for me to not have to reinstall all my apps... I'm still pretty new to all this so maybe there is a better way.. but this worked for me...
Unusual...
First I did a nandroid restore to the time a little after I got JF's 1.41. Everything was fine at first. I installed all of my apps. Tried to reboot a few times, and bam, I see it again.
In a rage--I wipe my fone from recovery mode. I then use MyBackup to restore all of my settings and apps.
I finish, and then i try a reboot and BAMMM ****in android.process.media is not responding.
Then I tried to reboot 3 more times wthout a problem and then the 4th time gave me the same problem.
Can anyone else whose having the same issue tell me what apps theyve recently installed?
Ive figured it out. But still stuck.
The problem was that i setup a symlink for my market cache to my sd card.
I removed the /data/data/com.android.vending/cache folder and my sd cards linked cache folder.
I then made a new cache directory in com.android.vending however I noticed that it wasnt working properly. It wasnt filling up with cache when i used the market.
I removed the symlink so why wouldn't it, right?
So I chmodded it.
I tried to chown it but i keep getting back unknown user app_5 (the markets ID)
I'm stuck please someone help me out here, and hopefully we can even get the market cache properly directed to my sdcard in the process.
THANKS!

try using the numeric id with chown instead. i.e. 10005 (not positive if it will work.. just something to try)
AHhh Yay JF ILY! That worked . I feel like a retard now.
The cache appears to be filling up as normal. The error isnt gone yet tho.
The question still remains. What causes that error?
How could i stop it?
The crashing process has the same gid/uid as Android.providers.media
it seems to be an app. I wiped and then I reinstalled 1.41. Then I installed all of my apps using mybackup. I made sure to do nothing else after, and I still got it.
Its either JF's 1.41 or an app.
How can I find out
Process of elimination. Wipe the phone again, instal jf's 1.41 and boot the phone. If you don't have the error, bingo, it's an app. Then, tedious as it may be, install the apps 1 at a time and reboot after install to see if you get the error.
Yeah I have done that.
However, its reallly hard because sometimes itll go 4-5 boots without a hitch, and then suddenly itll happen.
Then at other times it'll happen nearly every time.
I have about 65 apps. That's 4-5 boots, after installing each one.
So that would mean HUNDREDS of boots. At least 200.
I've been thinking that maybe its a problem with the MyBackup app.
What if the fact that mybackup overloads the phone with 20-30 installations at a time is whats causing the issues.
Well i'm off to error and error. I mean trial and error.
I've figured it out!
It's something to do with my wifi connection.
I think its that my dns's are from opendns.
Basically whenever my wifi is active when I turn on my phone i get that error.
If i turn it off and reboot into 3g, i never have a issue.
That's why it was so random before and I couldn't find any patterns!
I'm gonna call my ISP tomorrow, but anyone know what it could be?
I don't think it has anything to do with OpenDNS. I use JF1.41 RC30, MyBackup, and OpenDNS and never have any problems...
Hmm, do you have your router setup for opendns or your phone.
I have issues where i cant get my damn router to give out working IP's, so I
need to setup the phone for a static ip and dns.
I think that if I could get it to automatically get an IP i'd be set.
EDIT: Also, could it have anything to do with the fact that I have wpa personal security (AES)
Im having a similar problem but my error is slightly different
"com.google.process.gapps" anyone know WTF that is
Its the G Talk service.
If you dont use that app you could try removing it and see if that does anything ..
Since this has been bumped, i'd like to add that it still happens whenever I'm on wifi. Really blows

Care to explain how?? Im a serious noob lol

[Q] Inspire thinks it's in a car dock with non-Inspire based kernels

Now, from what I can gather, this problem stems from a faulty or dirty Micro-USB port. I tried compressed air, but it did nothing for me.
I decided to do a complete unroot, S-ON, factory restore and call HTC to see if I could get it fixed. To my surprise, the problem vanished. Thinking I had lucked out and that fixed it, I re-rooted the phone and the problem still didn't reappear.
Then, thinking I would start small, I flashed a Sense kernel. As soon as I rebooted it went straight to Car Home and began answering in speakerphone. For laughs I went ahead and flashed MIUI then CM7, both of which exhibited the same behavior.
After all of this, I got to wondering just why the stock ROM and kernel worked but nothing third party would. Then it hit me that all the 3rd party stuff I had been using were DHD ports, and not based off the Inspire. I downloaded and flashed ClearDroid, which has an Inspire base, and the problem is once again dormant.
The only sense I can make from it is that HTC has implemented some kind of fix for shoddy USB ports in the Inspire kernel.
So now here's the question: Does anybody know anything about this, and would it be possible to implement said fix in, say, and AOSP kernel?
When you flash a Rom there is a folder created called data on the root of your phone. This contains many files that control various settings on your phone. There is a file in particular where cardock settings get synced in data/data/Com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db. When you sign in with your google account some of these settings get restored to the mode in which you had it in when you wiped your phone. This is what causes some people to think that parts of their old Rom are bugging out their phone, I guess in a way it is, but its googles fault. The car dock is getting resynced to being on even though you haven't done anything. In order to fix it you must use SQL editor to open the database and look for the carmode or dock settings and set them back to 0. Once you do this it the next time the phone autosyncs it will save your newer settings.
Also Im pretty sure when your rooted this setting will take effect as to where a nonrooted phone doesn't allow the permission to execute the command.

I'll try that, but I can completely wipe my phone (cache, system, data, d-cache), flash CM 7.1.0, and without even logging into my Google account it happens.
After searching it seems this is a common problem with the phone. Some people where able to fix it and some where not. Even when it does go away for a while it will re emerge and get worse.
Some of the fixes are
1. turning airplane mode on for 10 min and then shutting it off
2. Changing chargers(dont ask me)
3. Blowing out port which you said you tried.
I am still not 100% its not some internal issue but why even bother if the hardware is malfunctioning.
I would start the warranty process and get it replaced.
Backing up to the beginning.....Are you flashing ROMs or kernels? Seems to me you are flashing ROMs but keep using the word kernel.
Why not just remove the car dock app from the ROM or use Titanium Backup to freeze it?

Both.
With the stock ROM and kernel, everything is fine. With the stock ROM and a DHD-based kernel it happens. With any AOSP ROM it happens.
Removing the Car Dock app keeps it from launching, but the phone still defaults to speakerphone for all calls (incoming and outgoing).

The problem about warrantying it is when it's in a stock state, it works fine.
I've never dealt with HTC, but I can't exactly see it going over well if I call up and say "My phone acts funky when I run CyanogenMod".
The airplane mode fix is something I haven't heard before. I guess I'll give it a go.

HELP! SGS4G Multiple issues: no sound in calls, music, and screen remains on in call!

I have been experiencing some issues with my phone recently. I have flashed multiple roms and everything was working fine for the past 3 months or so. Last week I flashed Hebrew Valhalla, it worked fine for a few days then all hell broke lose! I started experiencing the following issues with the phone:
1. In calls, people can hear me but I cannot hear them through the front speaker. I have to either put it on speakerphone or use my headphones.
2. Whenever I cannot hear people in calls (issue #1 above) then there is also no sound coming from the back speaker when I play music. It only works with headphones.
3. Sometimes when I play music, sound only comes from the phone's speaker. Yes the tables literally turn! Even if I plug in headphones, it keeps playing through the phone's speaker. I use stock music player no mods nothing and yes my headphones and their jacks are good I tried multiple ones.
4. The screen does not turn off while in calls. I used 2 apps to test the proximity sensor and it is working fine. Sometimes when on a call the screen randomly turns on and off but most of the time it remains on.
5. Although the vibration intensity is set to max, when typing, the intensity is random. Sometimes it is strong, other times it is weak. Completely random and it is only for typing. It works fine for notifications and pressing back button or whatever. The keyboard is swype and it used to work fine before.
SOMETIMES when I reboot the phone, Issues #1,2 and 3 fixes themselves; I can hear people in calls, music works fine both in speaker and headphones when necessary, but issue #4 is persistent.
The phone has not taken any falls/hits or anything, so I doubt it can he hardware related? So I assumed it is software related, I went to flash other roms, including the ones I used previously that was working fine and still nothing!!! I even flashed Heimdall one click and started from scratch, and still the same problems in the stock rom.
I have spent days searching all over to no avail. Please if anyone knows the solution or workaround to any of the issues above it will be greatly appreciated!!!!!
How old is the phone? If I were you and it's still under warranty I would consider a handset exchange through your phone provider, and if you choose that method make sure you go back to stock an unroot first before you send

Cannot do
The warranty has long expired, so that's not an option.
Look for the Gremlin Remover in the Dev section.
Trying
I have been trying for the past 5 hours to get the GR to connect to the phone but it just is not working. I have tried installing and uninstalling all drivers rebooting phone, pc, remove battery everything and it just does not work!!!
The only time GR connects to the phone is when it is starting up, or when the os has loaded up fully. whenever I reboot to download mode it disconnects and never connects back to odin when in download mode. What am i doing wrong? I used the drivers in the GR file but it does not work.
Can anyone link to the drivers that will make odin see the phone while in download mode?
Look at the guide in the second link of my signature. Read the notes about drivers, odin and heimdall. You need to completely, thoroughly and patiently make sure you remove them all.
Go to the wiki for the samsung drivers or use kies mini to install the drivers. ODIN is a samsung software and they use the same drivers.
Still not working
So I found the right drivers and just finished flashing GR twice and the problems are still there. after flashing GR the second time I just flashed Hebrew Valhalla and the problems are still there
I really dont think there is anything else I can do?
Did you do ALL of the steps that Thomas posted? Not just the flashing GR.
Yes I did all the steps: 1, 2 then 3, not the "Filesystem Cleaner" part.
You have nothing to lose doing all the steps.
Ok I will do the Filesystem Cleaner part now and update in a while
EDIT:
I installed the android SDK to connect to adb. Thomas's instructions says to go to recovery mode, but the pc only see's the phone as adb when the phone is booted up in normal mode, not when it is in recovery mode.
I used the universal driver installer, is there specific adb drivers for recovery mode?
So before I got the adb to work I kept rebooting the phone and pushed and removed the headphones in the headphone jack multiple times and I was suprised everything started working. I could how hear people in calls, the screen turned off fine during a call, music worked fine. Rebooted again and everything still worked fine! My memory card was formatted so I copied back some of the files that were on it (music, pictures and apk installers for certain apps, and titanium backup folder). I went to install my apps from the apk's not titanium backup, so I did not restore any data just fresh install the apk's....
.....Rebooted the phone and all the problems came back!!!! I tried uninstalling the apps and reboot multiple times but the problems remained, so I said I will try the entire process again.
Ok so I found the drivers and completed ALL the steps now including the adb stuff and the filesystem cleaner. The status was already clean but I still ran the cleaner just to be safe. Then I flashed Gremlin Remover again and the problems still exist. I flashed Octane 3, problems still exist. flashed Hebrew Valhalla and the problems were still there...rebooted multiple times and the incall volume is working FOR NOW, but the screen does not turn off anymore.
I pushed the headphones in and out many times as it worked the first time but it made no difference now. I really do not know what more is there to do
How are calls just using your phone? No headphones. If things were fine before restoring your sd card shouldn't that tell you there is a good chance something on your sd card is messing with your phone?
You should start over again. Be thorough. Do all the Gremlin Remover steps. Leave your sd card fresh after format. Install apps one at a time with time between from the playstore. Don't mess with your headphones yet. And see what state your phone is in.
It could be your phone. An app. Your sd card or some data on it. Or your headphones. Process of elimination.
Do you have accidental damage insurance? Hammer anyone?lol
Seriously though, with using the gremlin remover and system cleaner processes, everything bad should have been removed. However, you stated that the problems reoccoured after restoring your sdcard. My guess would be either a virus (yes it is possible to get a virus or malicious file on our phones) or a corrupt file/files that is contained in your files that you restored to your sdcard. As much of a pain in the ass it may be, you should restore each file one by one and test. Once the issue reoccours, then you know what is the cause. there are some directories/files you should not restore:
Code:
.android_secure
.cache
Android
CachedImages
data
gps
LOST.DIR
temp
tmp
Voodoo
and any folders that pertain directly to any apps you use like 360launcher, goweather, etc.
As lumin said, everything worked fine until you restored your sdcard...

Sadly, this is where I am right now. I did start all over again, formatted the card and only put Hebrew, Octane and Anton's kernel. This is all that is on the card, when I installed them some of the default folders were created. I am yet to put anything else on the memory card, and at the time of this typing I only have basic market apps installed, nothing from transferring from pc to memory card or anything.
1. I have fully cleaned the system using all the steps in GR so I doubt the problem can be with the software on the phone.
2. I doubt it can be an app causing it because even after restoring the official rom just after GR it still does not work.
3. I am not sure if it can be the memory card, since I formatted it so many times, if it had a virus shouldn't it be gone by now? Not sure, just asking. I have some other memory cards handy I will format them and start back from square one again to see how it goes.
4. As for the headphones, I tried different headphones all the same thing. If anything then the problem about the incall sound might be with the headphone port itself. Maybe the phone's hardware or something in that port got stuck or something just something that is making the phone detect a headphone when there is actually none, maybe that's why...that's the most plausible thing I can think of relating to the incall and music volume. Now since I pushed it and out multiple times that maybe fixed it? Not sure..
As for the screen not going off I have no idea; so I will do everything again using a new memory card, not restoring anything, only install market apps one at a time and let you know how it goes.
I followed all the instructions down to the last letter. Did everything over. Removed battery left for some time. Formatted new memory card and only put the cleaner, one mp3 song for testing, Octane and Anton's kernel on it. Did the adb cleaning. Flashed Gremlin Remover. Left for 15 min. Flashed Octane and then Anton's kernel. Reboot and waited 15 min. Did not install anything whatsoever. First thing I did: make a call and play the mp3 file and suprise!! All the problems were still there. Nothing changed. Screen still remained on, no sound in call, no sound from music player; only through headphones like in square 1. Pissed off to the max.
I quit.

Honestly, if you did all that, your device should be running it's best ever... You may have some sort of hardware malfunction. Even after trying different ROMs you still have the same issues correct?
I can tell you, I started experiencing some really bad things (not near as bad as yours) after I flashed a ROM WIP, and it took me several flashes to get my phone up and working again. But the only thing that was even remotely hardware related was the mis-calibration of the screen... I have to say, your problem is one of a kind...
However, have you tried pulling a logcat to see if by some chance there was something in there?

I don't know anything about logcat and how to interpret it. I see nearly 20k lines of text when I did it, what exactly should I look for?
I added it to my dropbox account if it is going to be helpful, here is the link:
This is the logcat I saved from my phone. Click it
I'm almost positive that it's some mechanical/electrical problem with the headphone jack. Something is stuck there, or it's dirty, so the controller erroneously detects like something is always plugged in. Hint: you said earlier that it suddenly started working when you were actively plugging-unplugging headphones.

Yes I believe so too. I will try to open the phone to see what I can find concerning the headphone issue.
What about the screen not going off? Any suggestions?

Stay Awake always enabled after boot

So, as the title suggests, the Stay Awake feature under Settings>Applications>Development keeps getting reenabled when I boot my phone.
I've currently got Tasker disabling this feature on boot, but I shouldn't have to resort to this.
It started happening a LONG time ago, and have no idea what caused it, or if it was like this from the get go.
I've used my limited knowledge to try and find the file containing the setting (if there even is one) to no avail, and have searched around only to come up with squat. (although I did find a bunch of people having trouble with the setting disabling itself, when they didn't want it to. back wards from me.)
Does anyone have any clue at all as to what I can do? Boot up has slowed to a crawl (amongst other things) ever since I installed Tasker and started making profiles for it, so anything I can do to make this setting disabled on a permanent basis without Tasker doing it for me would be awesome.
What Rom?

If its jellybean then there are issues with settings sticking. If not I would suggest backing up your sd card and fully format it. Fully wipe phone and reflash. Then only bring back files from sd backup that you know you want like music, pics, titanium backups, etc. Also don't select google account during setup. Let it boot first and then add google account through settings.

There's got to be a better way. I know fix permissions actually breaks certain things (contact photos) so it seems plausible that it might have broken permissions to whatever file contains that setting (making the file read-only).
Barring any other feed back a reflash probably is the only way to get it to stick. Almost might be worth it to get my boot time back to where it was.
Or... you know... I could always switch to aospX and stop being a little whiny baby lol
Formatting of the SD card needs to be Fat32 right?
Yeah you could try hunting it down to either a file on sd or in system or a google sync bug but wiping may be the easier route. I hear you though its not always convenient to full wipe. I use to flash a lot but it rather bothers me now setting everything back up. If you want to go Aosp route jellytime is my favorite. R15 is the most stable version.

I went the aospx route. Cut my boot up time in half (from 2:20 down to one minute now). Just need to find a launcher worth a damn now. I used to have launcher pro, and don't really want to pay for another. Know of any free ones that show message count and all that, because Apex doesn't unless I buy the pro version.

[Q] Can't access SD apps after reseting DS!

Hi! My Desire S was crashing frequently so I did factory reset to my Desire S. Before that I moved some of the apps to SD.
The problem is that after resetting the phone, I am unable to find the apps on SD. There is no icon of them in the menu. But my card memory is still the same as before reset meaning that they were not uninstalled by resetting.
What should I do? Any recommendations and ideas?
Thnx!

"Factory Reset" resets the phone to the factory default (or the ROM default if you're using a custom ROM). That means it starts up as if it was a fresh install. However, it cannot touch anything on the SD-Card unless to tick the box for "Format SD-Card" (or whatever it's called).
Simply reinstall the applications and move them to SD again as you did before.
One lesson to learn though - just because your phone is crashing, doesn't always mean that a factory reset is the best plan of action. If it is 'Stock', unrooted etc then fine, but as you are on XDA I assume you actually play with it a bit; you would have been better off taking logcats and trying to work out what was causing the crashes rather than simply wiping and having to install everything from scratch again. It could even be something as simple as your SD-Card going faulty, thus causing the phone problems when it tries running the apps that you have moved to SD.

Hi! Thanks for your detailed reply. No doubt I am on XDA, but my DS is still "Virgin" ! It is on stock ROM Gingerbread. I am still a newbie in the filed of ROMs that's why I haven't rooted my DS yet.
Actually, what happened was that whenever I unlocked the phone, some .com service stopped working and my phone dropped all the network signal. There was some issue with the radios I think. WiFi signals also got very feeble.
I by moving apps to SD doesn't it mean that I will not be required to re-install then after resetting? I mean they were not deleted or erased? Or by moving to SD means that there data is moved but there apk is still on phone?
Regards,

Although the data may still be on the SD-Card, the phone O/S will have no knowledge of them, or of what to do with them. It would be useful if you could remember which '.com' stopped, but it's too late now. I doubt if it was actually a radio problem though - if it has been working fine since you got it then it is unlikely that the radio firmware suddenly decided to go wrong.
It may be worth keeping an eye on it as you reinstall all your apps. If it is still under warranty then it may be worth taking it back to the shop you got it from just in-case there is a developing hardware fault, although that is unlikely.
