after doing your nandroid backup,
DO A FULL WIPE:
1) wipe DATA
2) wipe CACHE
3) wipe DALVIK CACHE (in advanced menu)
4) do this at least TWICE, just to be on the safe side.
after wiping:
flash ROM.ZIP first, then REBOOT
after reboot and setting up, reboot the phone again into clockworkmod recovery and WIPE CACHE AND DALVIK CACHE.
then flash kernel.zip.
reboot and enjoy. oh, and also hit the thanks button

So when should we be mounting system. Is it not necessary?
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App

after your full wipe, then you do install from zip, that should do everything needed to install/mount/whatever magic goes into installing that ROM on your phone
i've never consciously done anything to my memory of manually mounting anything. Just wipe -> rom install

How Can I Switch/Update my Kernel/CWM/ROM?

With the recent update of CWM/PBJ kernel I'd like to update to the latest ones and I'd also like to switch ROMs to test some other ones out. Can someone guide me through this? I've never switched before I just followed (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1122657), that's it(as far as flashing and such goes). I'd just like an easy to follow guide on updating the Kernel/CWM and installing a new ROM(If and when I'd need to disable Voodoo, if flashing something will reset all my contacts/apps, etc) I'd really appreciate it and thanks will be in order for anyone and everyone who is helpful :]
Info: I'm running 6/15 PBJ OC kernel with 1.8.5 Gummycharged ROM
There's not much to it. kernel and Rom can be updated in CWM.
Download the rom you want to flash to /sdcard (root of your sdcard)
reboot into recovery. If you do not have the option holding down the power button and hitting restart. Dl a terminal emulator and type:
Code:
$su (to gain root)
#reboot recovery
Wipe Cache and factory data reset
Go to advanced: Wipe Dalvik cache and battery settings
scroll to flash with a zip
choose: select zip from sdcard
choose the zip that you downloaded
once the install is complete reboot phone. let rom install
Follow same thing for Kernel. Just make sure you remember what the name of your kernel is.

That works a treat thank you.
Easier way to get into CWM: hold down Power+Volume Up+Home until you see SAMSUNG, let go, and you'll boot straight into recovery. No need to mess around with terminal commands.
Also, when flashing a kernel only (not a ROM), there's no need to wipe data.

Clockworkmod Nightly Install Script

I'm running CM7 on my G2X alongside Trinity kernel. I've got ROM Manager Premium on my phone to check nightlies. Whenever I get an update notification I do the following:
1) download the nightly
2) reboot into recovery
3) format /system
4) format Dalvik
5) format cache
6) install nightly
7) install google apps
8) install Trinity
I would like to find a way to automate steps 3-8 in ClockworkMod. I'm currently running 4.0.0.2. Does anybody know of a way to accomplish this?

You format system for every nightly? Good Lord, man....just wipe dalvik and cache...in fact, if you just use Rom Manager, and hit the options to only wipe dalvik and install gapps, it will do the rest for you.
I'm not just installing the nightly...hence the reason for this post. I'm also installing a custom kernel as well. This needs to be done alongside the nightly.
And...for the record...formatting /system is only one additional step in 8 steps and it's not even the longest one.

No need to format even if reinstalling the kernel. You should
1)wipe dalvik/cache
2)flash nightly
3)flash kernel

[Solved] How to start Flashing Andromadus ROM (Build 13) Android 4.2 on HTC Desire S?

Hi all,
I want to install Andromadus ROM Build 13 on my DS and currently have stock 2.3.3 installed.
As this will be my first custom ROM and also I couldn't find any how-to to install Andromadus on an HTC Desire S so, I am posting it here.
I have 4EXT touch recovery, S-OFF'ed and the HBoot is downgraded to 0.98.2000 (PG8810000).
So, where do I start? I am making backups using 4EXT recovery and downloading "flinnycm101_saga_13.zip" & "gapps-jb-20121212-signed.zip" from http://andromadus.flinny.org/?q=node/24
but as posted on the same page..I have a doubt of whether to flash the MDDI kernel too? Is that required to be flashed on an HTC Desire S ?
Any full length how-to's will be appreciated.
General guide to flash any rom can be found here
No need to flash kernel. Just flash the rom and gapps.
You might also want to use Titanium Backup to backup any apps from your stock rom and restore to the new rom.

So, Can I use 4ext's recovery app to boot into recovery mode >> then format System
>> Format Data
>>Format Cache
>> then Format Boot
>> Wipe Data/Factory reset (1st option in wipe/format menu)
>> Wipe Dalvik Cache
>> n then finally install zip (ROM) from sd card and flash the rom..
>> then flash then gapps zip?
Also, isn't 4ext's backup option backs up my apps, app's data and the contacts too? :| um..what about the draft message(s) ? will that be backed up too using 4ext recov.?
But I guess I won't be able to restore them on an individual basis when I am done flashing the new ROM? As 4ext's created backup can only restore the full backed-up data which includes the old ROM itself!
Update: backing up apps+data using Titanium backup pro..so that will backup my contacts+ sms+draft sms too..right?
Any advice?
Guys..I did the following:
went to 4ext's recovery app in recovery mode
>> then formated System
>> Formated Data
>> wiped* Cache (as there was no option for: "format" cache)
>> then Formated Boot
>> Wiped Data/Factory reset (1st option in wipe/format menu)
>> Wiped Dalvik Cache
>> n then finally installed zip (ROM) from sd card and flashed the rom..
>> then flashed then gapps zip
Now after 1st reboot from recovery..I am stuck at white background saying HTC..its been quite a few mins around 3-4mins
Shall I re-flash the ROM ?
Please help :s

Is there a way I can determine which screen do I have..now that I have already flashed my device and cannot access es explorer and stuff?
I do have access to 4ext recovery and adb console :|
Is it possible to navigate to / or /sys using adb console?
Also, suppose even if I do have the MDDI type of screen and I flash the MDDI kernel img but will that mean that I won't be able to adjust screen brightness and stuff?
Just flashed the MDDI kernel..waiting for reboot proc to complete...
I hope this doesn't fail this time.. :|

As a suggestion, flash the mddi panel if it boots then you can be fairly certain your on the right path. At the moment there is no brightness control for mddi panel but there are some alternatives in the thread i directed you to

now its been ~2-3mins still stuck on the HTC screen :| (even after flashing the MDDI kernel)
Do I have to re-clear/wipe the cache..after flashing the ROM? or re-flash the ROM itself? (as I have read in some posts that it usually works after clearing the dalvik/cache and/or reflashing the same ROM again)
Can you provide me with the command I can use on adb console to find out the brand of my screen's manufacturer ?
Update:
I had flashed the ROM and then flashed the google apps pkg and then after a reboot now again flashed the MDDI kernel.
Is it the correct sequence to install the MDDI kernel?
Need help guys..its been more than 5 mins since I am stuck on the screen..what should I do now?
Pull out the battery..to give it a hard reset?
Please help :'(

Best thing to do is not panic, you can still access recovery. What i would do in this situation is start again from the beginning with fresh downloads checking you have correct gapps package for the rom(check md5 of all files) using 4ext format all except sd card and reflash new downloads. Reboot into recovery using adb, try not to pull the battery unless you really have to then if you do wait a couple of seconds before replacing it

go to recovery restore your prev. ROM and check the panel
Step 1. Find out which screen panel your device has:
1) Download and install Android Terminal Emulator from Google Play Market
2) Open the application and type in these commands:
(WARNING: to use these commands - you must be rooted with either Superuser or SuperSU AND have BusyBox installed on your phone)
su
dmesg|grep -i panel
If the app shows you any text with word "sony" in it - then your device has a screen panel made by Sony (obviously). If that's the case - you can just close this thread at once and don't worry that your device might freeze at "HTC Quietly Brilliant" screen after flashing a ROM. Otherwise, proceed forward.
OR
1) Open up a file manager that has an ability of browsing any partition above the default SD-card directory and can access the system partition
You can use either ES File Manager or Root Explorer
2) Navigate to /sys/android_display
If there is a file called "sony ****** wvga" - then you have a Sony panel. Otherwise - you device has a panel by Hitachi.
Step 2. Download a MDDI kernel developed by Andromadus:
For Android 4.0.x & 4.1.x, use this link --> http://goo.im/devs/Super/andromadus/...kernel_82n.zip
For Android 4.2.x, use this link --> http://andromadus.flinny.org/sites/a...212.zip&nid=16
Step 3. Flash the MDDI kernel:
If you are S-OFF --> just flash the .zip file with the kernel after flashing the ROM and GAPPS package through "install zip from sdcard"
If you are S-ON --> use the following instruction:
Thanks for Fatal1ty 18 RUS:good:

Stop opening fresh threads, people tend to ignore you More if you constantly open threads. I had a couple of panicky moments when i first did mine. Just take a deep breath and start again

The MD5 was not same ! The MDDI kernel I flashed it did not had the same MD5 as I the one I redownloaded..
And now..I cannot reboot into recovery by using adb.. :'(
I tried "adb reboot recovery" command
And it gave me an error saying: error: device not found
How can I reset the adb?
PS: sorry MODs but I wanted to present my problem clearly so had to open a thread with a clear description.

[MOD][SCRIPT] Super WIPE Script HTC One | Aroma GUI (upd.18/03/2015)

This tool will allow you to easily WIPE system, data (except /data/media), boot (kernel) and cache partitions directly from custom recovery.
Before using this tool you need to be sure you are using latest version of custom recovery (TWRP or CWM). The current downloads for both CWM and TWRP can found below:
The latest M7 U/UL TWRP can be downloaded HERE. I recommend to use TWRP 2.6.3.0 (for v1.0.2d) and TWRP 2.8.5.* (for v2.0.2) .
v1.0.2d will work for Intarnational version, GE, T_Mobile, AT&T but NOT for SPRINT DEVICE
and v.2.0.2 - for all version!!!
To use this tool please copy zip file to your phone and then boot into custom recovery and choose Install. Then browse to where you copied zip file and select it. Aroma installer will begin. Choose options you want to run.
What script does:
1. Wipe /cache partition (select in Aroma);
2. Wipe delvik-cache (select in Aroma);
3. Wipe /system partition (select in Aroma);
4. Wipe /data partition except /data/media (select in Aroma);
5. Format boot partition (kernel) and removes /system/lib/modules (select in Aroma);
/system/lib/modules
/system/etc/init.d/01-h2w
/system/etc/init.d/01-pwp
/system/etc/init.d/01-therm
/system/etc/init.d/01-blinkbuttons
/system/etc/init.d/01-f2s

/sys/android_touch/sweep2wake
/sys/android_touch/doubletap2wake
/sys/android_touch/logo2wake
/sys/android_touch/pocket_detect
/sys/android_touch/logo2menu
5. Removes some system files from /data/media;
/sdcard/.android_secure

/sdcard/LOST.DIR
/sdcard/.data/footprints
/sdcard/.data/mail
sdcard/Android/data/com.android.providers.media
/sdcard/Android/data/com.google.android.apps.genie.geniewidget.news-content-cache
/sdcard/Android/data/com.google.android.apps.maps
/sdcard/.data/navigator/Data/Temporary
6. Check partitions for errors;
7. Create a log of work on internal memory card.
This operation will remove all your data except for /data/media.
If you wipe ONLY BOOT, then you must to flash new kernel and kernel modules too (/system/lib/modules)!
Make sure that you have nandroid backup and Titanium backup before a full wipe!!!
You must have new ROM on /data/media to flash after full wipe!!!
If AROMA Installer stops at 0%, then you must to press Power button and hold 15-17 seconds to reboot. Then go to recovery and start installation again. This will help you.

In TWRP all the same, except wipe of boot partition. And there is no partition format /data/media in this script.
Boot partition can be flashed into bootloader (fastboot usb) through:
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
or through:
Code:
fastboot oem rebootRUU
fastboot flash zip boot.zip
(If you S-OFF you can put into zip 2 files: boot.img and android-info.txt, if s-on - signed firmware.zip)
or into custom recovery (zip).
It's dangerous to delete HBOOT partition! In this case - bricks. If you erased boot partition then you can enter into bootloader and recovery and restore all things! ...
so are u telling me that yr script is different from wiping in TWRP ?
So yr script dont delete Hboot partition?
Do not worry!
This script don't delete Hboot partition!
so its safe to use?
I checked all items of script on myself. All safe. And if someone does not think before to do something, it is always dangerous!

[GUIDE] How to flash roms/kernels

How to flash CLEAN flash roms - This is how I flash roms(even updates of the same rom) and the method i recommend to users. It is better to take 10 mins to set your phone again rahter than wasting more time to fix issues that could have been avoided by a clean flash.
NOTE- This is a MUST when changing roms.
1. Backup EFS
2. Make a nandroid backup in recovery
3. Wipe data/factory reset
4. Wipe system
5. Wipe cache
6. Wipe dalvik
7. Flash ROM
8. Flash gapps(if flashing an AOSP ROM)
9. Flash kernel(optional)
10. Reboot
11. Wait 10 mins, then do another reboot
12. Enjoy
How to DIRTY flash roms - This method is used by users when flashing a update of the same rom.
NOTE- Some users follow this and some just flash the rom without wiping anything.
Note- If you flash rom that has aroma installer you will need to edit the updater script to make sure the aroma doesn't wipe system before flashing rom.
1. Backup EFS
2. Make a nandroid backup in recovery
3. Wipe cache
4. Wipe dalvik
5. Flash ROM
6. Flash gapps(if flashing an AOSP ROM)

How to SUPER CLEAN flash roms - This is the method that I recommend to your that have weird issues, even after clean flashing.
NOTE - If you dont know how to Odin the stock FW(firmware), read this guide.
NOTE - Make a backup of your internal sdcard and save rom/gapps/kernel/etc on external sdcard.
1. Backup EFS
