Rooting and Flashing a custom ROM

I flashed the leaked froyo firmware I897UCJI6 on my samsung captivate using odin 1-click method. I have a working 2.2 now. My phone is not rooted. I am planning to flash a custom ROM and try other custom ROMs out there in the market. I've gone through a three part video series by mobiletechvideos on how to root and flash a custom ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884364). But, i still have a few questions.
1. For rooting, do i need to flash the phone back to the stock JF6?
2. In the xda link given above, i am fine until step #4. Step #5 is a little bit confusing to me. After i copy the root file to the root directory in the internal sd card on my phone, i rename it to update.zip. Also, i copy the clockworkrecovery to the root directory in the internal sd card in the phone and rename it to update.zip. Now, after i am doing with rooting and clockworkrecovery, i have to proceed further to flash the custom ROM. Now, the steps mentioned in the xda forum does not say anything about moving the custom ROM file to the root directory in the internal sd card on the phone. My question is: Do i need to copy the custom ROM zip file into the root directory of the phone? Do i need to rename the custome ROM file to update.zip as well?
Someone please help.

If you are on ji6 you will not be able to install clockwork because of 3e recovery. Two option, flash back to stock using

Thanks for the reply. What is 3e recovery by the way? I am able to flash back to stock (jf6) using odin 1-click by following the volume up + down method to download. My build number is not in that 1000 series. Are you referring to s/n number found under the battery? In many threads I have seen ppl saying if u r under 1009 build # then you need to use 3 key combo method. You are saying the opposite. I am confused now. Sorry sir but I think I need.more explanation. I thank you for your time

If you can get into dl mode issuing volume and usb then you have three button combo. Later builds can not use jf6 stock 1010 and up. Your build had to be there, and I do not think it its possible it is not in the 1000s if you have a captivate

Pls clarify if s/n # found under battery is actually the build number. Also, according to many posts in this forum, three buttom combo is
1. Vol up
+
2. Vol down
+
3. Press Power button
Since when USB slot became a button? I am sorry but I dont understand.

Thank you. Mine is 1007. So, now back to the question. I need to flash back to stock JF6 using odin 1-click. Then,i need to root the phone and install.clockworkmod recovery using the info found in the 3 part video series by mobiletechvideos. And,proceed with the custom ROM flash. WOW! I clicked on the xda link from my phone and the update.zip got downloaded into the download folder in my internal sd (i deleted it). I see the point now. I need to root only to back up all apps and system data such as contacts, sms,media etc. Otherwise, no need to root. Please conform the steps one last time if you don't mind:
1. Copy the update.zip into the root directory of my phone (how to get to the root directory, by the way! Sorry it is a dumb question). Also, copy the custom ROM zip file to the same root directory.
2. Using 3 button combo, follow the remaining steps.
Now, after I successfully flash the custom ROM, can I use the android market and install all the apps I use.

When you open my files app you are looking at the root of your sd. You will see your download folder, go to it long press either file select move phone will direct you to root if sd, select paste.
You are correct you need root to run programs like titanium backup to backup your apps, but when you flash stock they will all be gone either way. So unless you are rooted now you can not back up your apps. You can dl them again do not restore any system data just user apps. Backup contacts by exporting to ext sd, or sim

The simplest way there is to root/ flash a rom is to use a one click root program.

If you use this, it roots your phone for you. After you root with the program in the link above( there are videos on how to use the program if you get confused ) Download Rom Manager from the market. open up rom manager and select flash clockwork mod recovery. After that in the program rom manager click reboot into recovery( easier than holding volume buttons) the stock recovery will pop up when the phone reboots. Click reinstall packages. It will bring you back to the stock recovery, click reinstall packages for a second time and you will have cwm (clock work mod ) recovery. In clockwork mod recovery there is an option to back up your phone. do this before you flash a rom. after you back up turn your phone on. Make sure it is in usb debugging. connect to your computer and on your phone select mount sd. drag the downloaded rom .zip file into the sd. the root of you phone is just what ever drive your phone shows up as. unplug your phone reboot into recovery and in cwm recovery there is an option to factory wipe, do this and after it is done, click the option install zip. then choose zip from sd. highlight the rom . zip file you are flashing and select it. it will take a minute or too and when it is done just reboot the phone. First boot will take a while but once it boots your all set. any questions you can pm me and good luck.

Thank you. I have your toolbox program installed in my computer running 64 bit windows 7 home.premium edition. I have a few questions. My phone is running the leaked JI6 2.2 rightnow. What should I choose first from the toolbox? If I choose, flash to stock then do I need to select thw JF6 firmware file from somewhere or the tool itself will do the job? Sameway, if I click root, then do I need to select a root / clockwork files to finish rooting or again the tool itself will do the job? I understand for flashing the custom ROM I need to choose the the ROM .zip file. I watched the video about your program on mobiletechvideos on youtube. I think I need to watch it again or if you don't mind then can you give me the steps to use your toolbox (given what firmware I have currently running). Thank you

Hi, I'm relatively new to the Desire S. Iv just purchase the XTC pay as you go clip from

It's seems quite straight forward to operate, but I need some clarification (iv searched threads but couldn't find answer)
After iv s-off'd with the clip, will the stock ROM be erased, I.e , will I need to install a new ROM for the phone to work? Will I also need to I install a new radio? if so, what's the best order to do this.... Flash radio first, then ROM, or ROM and then radio, or it dosnt matter?
I guess, just to clarify, I'd like to know what steps I need to take once iv s off'd with the clip to get a working phone. Also, before I use the clip, are there any steps/precautions I should take.

The XTC Clip will factory reset your phone so make sure you backup what you can.
Then do the following:
1. Make sure USB debugging is enabled (settings -> applications -> development)
2. Make sure you have an SD card (formatted and inserted.) (Existing card is fine)
3. Get the APK on the phone, and install it. You could Go to market and download es file explorer its free. Then download the apk from the post and save it on your laptop/pc. Connect usb cable to phone and select mount sd card, copy apk to sdcard. Unmount sdcard from laptop/pc on phone. Using ES file explorer browse to apk and select it, it will give you option to install. Install it. Done.
4. Open the APK, press the root button i.e Go into app drawer and select gingerbreak, choose root. It will say after its done something like "not sure whats happened reboot to see if you have superuser..."
Reboot and your rooted.
5. Within your rooted ROM go to market and download ROM Manager, Install and Run. Answer yes to the Superuser prompt. Choose option to install recovery.
6. Then, download any custom rom of your choice from here (XDA) and copy to your SD Card (using above method).
7. Reboot into recovery either by using the "Reboot into Recovery" option in ROM Manager or by shutting down your phone and whilst holding vol down press the power button and then select recovery within bootloader.
8. Finally navigate to your custom rom in recovery by selecting the "Install Zip from SDCard" Option, once installed, reboot.
You could also download the latest recovery from here, id recommend the EXT4 recovery which you can install by using the above method, i.e download and copy to sdcard, reboot to recovery and install zip.

Just want to clarify, after iv s-off'd, even though the phone will be factory reset, I should still be able to use the phone (in other words the stock ROM will still be on the phone and not erased, or do I have to install the stock ROM again.). Also, which APK do you refer to?
Last question, when I do get into installing custom ROMs after iv s-off'd and rooted, if I need to install a recommended radio for the ROM, is it best to flash the ROM first and then the radio, or the radio first and then the ROM.
I also noticed in the development section that there's a new HBOOT version. Is it essential I install this?

Hi nbhadusia, yes you will still be able you phone with out doing anything more.
and the apk i question is this attached below,as for the recomend radio i tend to look in the devs sig to see which one they are using,and i have found flashing the radio after flashing the rom is fine, but i think it do'snt really matter. hope this helps

I'm about to get a g2x very soon, and i heard that the stock rom sucks and that Hellfire Pheonix's is best. The instructions given on the op was not very beginner friendly, so i'm a bit confuse. This is going to be my first android and i would appreciate it if someone could link me to some sort of reference and tutorial for the installation of Hellfire Phoenix.
I've searched and google, but i had no luck. If you guys know if a detailed tutorial is out there, then just tell me and i'll put more effort into finding my answer. Thank you very much.
EDIT: To be more specific, what threw me off was "DO NOT use CWM to load the rom to your SD card. CWM has been known to cause file corruption when using it to transfer the zip file.". From all the tutorials that i've read and seen, they all use cwm. what are the alternatives?

What it means is don't boot into CWM and mount usb storage and copy files to sd card from there because it is known to corrupt the file and then could end up in a bad flash and it could harm ur phone.
When ur gonna copy the rom ur gonna flash to ur sd card, make sure ur booted into android first and mount usb storage from there.

Now, to fully answer your question:
Ok, adding this in after I wrote this to make things clearer: before starting make sure you:
1. Have G2x scrubber in the root of your SD card
2. Have the zip for your ROM (HFP in this case) in the root of your SD card
3. Have a copy of gapps (Google Apps) in the root of your sd card, get it here
4. After flashing CWM make a back-up (nandroid) of your stock ROM via CWM
First you need to flash Clockwork Mod (CWM) on your phone go here for that:

Second grab G2x scrubber from the HFP thread.
Next boot into CWM by holding volume down and power at the same time as the phone starts up. I find it helpful to count to three (eg, one one thousand, two one thousand, etc) after the blue and white (as opposed to plain white) LG logo first appears, that way you will have your finger off the power button when CWM starts. And in case it needs to be explained: you navigate CWM via the volume keys and make selections with the power button.
So, having downloaded G2x scrubber to your phone, go to "install zip from SD card" then "choose zip from SDcard" and navigate to G2x scrubber, run it twice.
Once that is done, use the same install zip option and this time choose the HFP zip.
Next select the gapps zip and flash it.
You're all done. Reboot and enjoy.

No, just use NVFlasher to flash ClockWorkMod Recovery, then flash your rom. You'll be rooted when you finish.

I found good guides on TheUnlockr. There are links in the thread discussing Hellfire Sandwich (HFS). If you don't need wifi calling or the ability to take video I would recommend using HFS v1.2. It is an update to ICS (Android 4.0.x) but it is not completely stable yet.

Not new to this, but a little confused....

Hey guys, so I've been messing around with android products for a few years now, and within the last year and a half I've been getting into rooting and flashing new ROM's. And even though I know how to flash new ROM's, I'm still not understanding a few things, and what exactly they are, or what they mean.
I know that they are key components in flashing/modding.
Before I go any further, I know you're already thinking, "why doesn't this guy use the glossary?" Well, I have, and I couldn't get a firm understanding of what I was reading. I'm a pretty tech savvy guy, but mostly with computers. Phones and tablets are a little different to me.
Ok so here's a few of the questions I have, hopefully someone can put the answers into layman terms for me.
When I see the term update.zip, what exactly is this? I ask that because I see it in ROM Manager, ClockWork Mod, and also when I am reading things about ROM Development in the forums. So I guess my question is, what is it? And what happens if I flash/install an update.zip file from one ROM, and install it on a different ROM. Or what if I don't install an update.zip file altogether? Is it even needed?
Or when I am in Recovery, and I choose install zip from SD Card, one of the options I get is apply /sdcard/update.zip
I also find a file labeled "image.zip" in my ClockWork Mod folder on my SD Card, what would this be an image of exactly? I don't want to install it and end up doing something wrong to my phone.

You can divide Phone softwares in 3 broad parts.
1] Recovery Software
2] The OS
3] Games and apps which you install.
Zip files are used by recovery software to install OS, or installing a rooting software to root your phone or many more things which i don't know.
I have installed "Team Win Recovery" which came as a zip file.
I installed it through default recovery software in galaxy (Volume UP + Power in my phone).
Now when i press Volume UP + Power, i go into "Team Win Recovery" instead of Default recovery, which is now over written by the Zip file of "Team Win Recovery".
I did a full Backup of my current OS.
I then downloaded ROMs from this site, they were also in Zip format.
For flashing new ROM, i go into "Team Win Recovery" (Volume UP + Power). then i Wipe Cache, Dalvik Cache and also do a factory reset.
Then i go to "Install" and browse to Zip file of ROM and install it.
I have mad backups of many different ROMs on my phone, i can switch to any in 10 mins, by Wiping and flashing from backups.

[GUIDE] From stock GB to Custom JB (Noob-friendly)

STOCK GB ALL THE WAY TO JB CUSTOM ROM
If you run Gingerbread, start from A directly
If you run un-rooted Jellybean, start from B
If you run rooted Jellybean with a custom kernel, start from C.
If you run rooted Jelly Bean without a custom kernel, start from B, but skip number 1 and 6.
You might want to read this before starting, it is optional though, but will give you a better idea of what you're doing.
GUIDE
This guide shall guide you through turning your suckish GB i9070 (not i9070p) to Custom ROM JB Awesomeness.
Unless your phone shipped from Russia, it probably has Gingerbread preinstalled... so, let's first Jellybeanize it.
A) JELLYBEANIZATION:
Download Odin3 from here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/atta...1&d=1341114315. Extract it into a folder.
Download Stock JB firmware from here. http://hotfile.com/dl/222710569/1f2...m-GT-I9070-TSR-I9070XXLQE-1365486223.zip.html . Extract it into a separate folder, you will get a .tar.md5 file.
Make sure you have Kies installed, but not running.
Turn your phone off, and boot into Download mode, this can be done by holding the Vol.Down+Home+Power buttons together at the same time, till it boots.
Press Volume up to continue. Plug in your phone (make sure it's at least 60% charged) . Wait till Odin recognizes (It should say something like COMORT... to the left).
Click on PDA and choose the firmware (.tar.md5) that you extracted in step 2. Click start.
Right now, a virus which will fry your phone's internals is being installed... Calm down, joke.
When your phone boots into JB, and Odin says "PASS". Unplug.
NOTE: There is a chance that you will get a bootloop ( i.e. Android won't boot ). No, no, no... your phone isn't broken! Simply reboot to stock recovery by powering off, then pressing Vol.Up+Home+Power buttons together and wipe data/factory reset. It'll boot nicely
Now, you are currently on a stock Samsung Jellybean firmware, which is not rooted. This basically means that you do not have access to modifying the system files in your ROM, which means that you cannot install any custom kernel, custom recovery or a custom ROM... In section B, you will learn how to gain root access, install a custom kernel with a custom recovery.
B) ROOTING, KERNEL & TWRP/CWM:
Download Shaan's root from here http://d-h.st/ook
Download Temporary cwm from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1987313
Download CoCore + TWRP (TWRP is one of the two recoveries available, we will use it in this guide because it looks less intimidating, and it's touch-enabled ) from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/atta...8&d=1363518705
Place all 3(or 2 if you're rooted) zip files in your external SD card
Power off. Boot into recovery by holding Vol.Up+Home+Power.
By navigating via volume buttons, choose install zip from external sd card, and install root.zip... shouldn't take long.
In the same way install update.zip. Now in a few seconds, you will get a different screen, this is Clockworkmod recovery, albeit a temporary one..
In this recovery, go to install zip, then install zip from external sd, and choose CoCore+TWRP. After installation, keep going back until the main cwm screen, and hit reboot.
NOW, Everytime you boot into recovery (which is the way to backing up and installing custom ROMs) you will get TWRP.
Now, you are rooted, with a custom kernel, and TWRP ( a custom recovery). You can either stay on stock Samsung firmware, or continue through section C, and get yourself a custom ROM.
C) INSTALLING A CUSTOM ROM:
Download any custom ROM (Recommendations at the end of the thread) zip and place it in the root of your external (or internal, but i prefer ext.) sd.
Boot into recovery.
Navigate by touch, press backup, and slide as instructed to make a backup.
Go back to the main screen and choose install. If the zip has been placed in ext. sd. then press on external sd and choose the appropriate zip and slide to install. If placed in internal sd, then choose internal sd from the top and go to /emmc folder, and choose zip and install.
When finished, navigate to the recovery home, and press reboot sytem.

Q- Which of the above will increase my binary counter?
A- None! Let me clarify how the binary counter is tipped. The only way the binary counter can be increased is if you flash anything that is non-official Samsung signed, via Odin.
Q- How do I unroot?
A- You can unroot simply by following the steps in section A and not continuing with the rest of the guide.

ROM Recommendations
If you want a fully stable ROM, with everything working, Cyanogenmod or Cyanogenmod based ROMs currently do not fit the cirteria, as they some bugs still remain in these. So, you may try one of the stock based ROMs.

A million thanks for the guide .. I've installed Jetmod 4.0 and it's running fine. My only concern is that I created a backup of my previous ROM in the internal storage and now just 33MB space is available for installation of apps. Can you please tell me how to 1. Remove the backup, or 2. Move it to the external storage ?

Go to "my files" - internal (sdcard0 I suppose) select what file u want to move an move to external memory (sdcardExt).

I have already tried that, but I am not able to identify the backup. I had used to TWRP to backup and then flash JellyMod. I had looked up on some threads that the backup will be in SD -> TWRP -> Backups (or something similar to this), but there is no such folder in my phone.

Look for it using Root Explorer (download the app from the play store).

in your file manager browse to ext_sd. from within ext_sd you should have a folder labeled nandroid..
also, by default, the backups should be labeled/dated accordingly..
you could also get details on each file from within file manager that will give you more specific info. date created, etc..

in the "My Files" folder on your phone..
you will see All Files.. select it and youll see extSdCard and sdcard..
go to sdcard to navigate to your back up files after that move them to your memory card extsdcard..
voila.. free space..
