[TUT] Telus HTC Desire *UPDATED* - Windows Drivers, Root, Radio and ROM Instructions

Ok, so I just took the tutorial written by Slimdizzy and have modified it for Windows users, as he stated he was using a Mac, and a lot of people seem to be having issues getting this working. Go easy on me this is my first TUT write up, I hope it helps......If anyone has a correction or a suggestion please let me know.

When I rooted my Telus HTC Desire the first time it was hit and miss, if I remember correctly I did it 3 times until it worked 100%, by this I mean Unrevoked/Root ran without hitch, and after running Unrevoked I was able to reboot into Android, and then reboot back into recovery on my first try without any weirdness.....
The following steps are what I did to get my drivers installed and working the first time, rooting the phone, installing Radio 5.09.00.20, and getting a custom ROM installed (I used OpenDesire)
First things first you need the drivers, this is the most important part. Nothing will ever work for you if you don't have the right drivers installed.
Drivers:
1. Download the Android SDK here: http://dl.google.com/android/android-sdk_r06-windows.zip
2. Unzip and place the files in C:\Android. You can place the files wherever you want but my steps will use this location.
3. Run SDK Setup.exe , if you get the Failed to fetch URL error, hit close and then go to Settings and enable Force https://. Then click on Available Packages, near the bottom you will see USB Driver Package, place a check mark beside it and then click Install Selected.
Alternatively you can try using these drivers, they have worked for other users but I have not installed my drivers using this method so I can't say how well they will work.....

4. Android SDK will download your drivers and place them here C:\android\usb_driver.
Now plugin your Desire with USB Debugging enabled (Settings --> Applications --> Development). Windows will prompt you for the device drivers, point windows to the C:\android\usb_driver folder and it should do it's thing. YOU MUST BE SURE TO INSTALL THE ADB DRIVERS, without those Unrevoked will not run.
5. Once all your drivers are installed, you can verify them by checking with the Android SDK
Open a DOS prompt (CMD in the Run box) and navigate to C:\android\tools and then type "adb devices", it should return a funny device name/ID, if you see a device listed then you are good to go, if you don't then repeat these steps until you do, check your Device Manager for an uninstalled device/driver.

Steps for Rooting:
***Follow these steps after you are 100% sure you have the drivers right!***
***DO NOT plug you Desire into your computer yet***
1. Goto http://unrevoked.com and download the software
2. You now have a choice of recovery, Amon RA has released an SLCD version of his recovery, which in my opinion is much better, it has a few more features than Clockwork. I recommend Amon RA, but the choice is yours.

3. Go to HBOOT, this is done by shutting down your phone and powering on the device while holding the Power button down and pushing Volume down at the same time, once HBOOT is loaded do a wipe (Clear Storage). You can navigate the menus by using the volume rocker and the Power button to select your option.
4. Load Unrevoked and load the custom SLCD recovery file on your PC:
Goto File>Custom Recovery and point it to the recovery image that you downloaded in step 2.
5. Restart your phone, it will take a few minutes because you did a wipe, just wait it will load (up to 5 minutes). As soon as the welcome screen loads plug your phone in to the PC and Unrevoked should do it's thing. If Unrevoked doesn't start, then hit the Menu button go to Settings --> Applications --> Development and enable USB debugging.
6. The phone will restart a couple of times, and will look like it's hanging on the HTC screen but it's not! If the HTC screen is present for more than 5 minutes pull your battery and start again ( I had to do this a couple times myself). If Unrevoked pauses half way through its process, it could be because for some reason you don't have the proper drivers installed. You can load them as Unrevoked does the root process, while the phone is rebooting if Unrevoked pauses and Windows prompts you for a driver point it to the C:\android\tools directory and it will load the drivers and Unrevoked will continue its root process.
7. When Unrevoked is finished you will be left at the recovery screen,
8. *** VERY IMPORTANT*** Before restarting do a "wipe cache partition", "factory reset". And now would be a good time for a Nandroid Backup
9. Now reboot, and Android should load. Check for Superuser Permissions app, if you see it you're good if not restart from step 3.
10. Shutdown and load HBOOT, wait a few seconds for SD card (you'll see something try to load quickly), then load recovery again, it should load everytime without issue now.
It may take a few tries, but just follow these steps and it will work.
Steps for flashing radio, and custom ROM:
1. Grab a custom ROM from the forum, I used OpenDesire: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=712615
OpenDesire comes with a nice reboot to Recovery feature built in.
2. Once zip is download, copy it to your SD card
3. Get the updated radio needed from here: http://www.mightyrom.com/mrx/MRX/Bravo/Radio/Signed/32.44.00.32U_5.09.05.30_2.zip
4. Reboot into recovery by powering on the device while holding the Power button down and pushing Volume down at the same time. Select Recovery with the Volume rocker and then click the power button to launch it.
5. Select "install zip from SD card" using the trackpad and select the radio zip that you download in step 3.
6. Let it do its thing (could take up to 10 mins to finish), use the back button to get to main menu and select "reboot system now" with the trackpad. If your phone hangs after rebooting wait at least 10 minutes before pulling the battery, it could be finishing the radio update.
7. Once rebooted check that the new radio is good by loading HBOOT (you should know how to do this by now) and at the top it will show you're radio version.
8. Load recovery again and select "wipe cache partition", "factory reset" (for the 3rd and final time). Then select "install zip from SD card" using the trackpad and select the ROM zip that you download in step 1.
9. The new ROM is now installed, restart the phone and wait up to 20 minutes (it shouldn't take that long) for the new ROM to load, DO NOT PULL YOUR BATTERY UNTIL AT LEAST 20 MINUTES HAVE PASSED.
You should now have your phone rooted, new radio installed, and a new custom ROM loaded.
Sorry for such a long post, but I found all these steps necessary to get the end result.
If I have missed anything or if anyone has comments / corrections post them here and I will try to keep the tutorial updated and easy to use as possible.

Couple of things.
USB debugging is under development in Apps. (not a big deal)
Those unrevoked drivers worked great for me, I followed the instructions in the HTML doc that came with the zip. I have heard there are extra drivers needed for windows 7, and you have to be sure your running unrevoked as an admin.
Once I was rooted, I used RomManager to get the newest clockwork and flashed it. I used rom manager to flash the rom, HBoot to flash the radio, and did it backwards. Seems to not make a difference.

Can you elaborate on this? I'm assuming Clockwork recovery is stored on the SD card?

Below may be wrong info, but it is what happened to me.
//////////////Yes there is a folder called clockwork mod, in there were my nandroid backups. I copied everything on the SD back and Clockwork booted, so I can't say for sure, but I'd assume all you need is the clockwork folder. There are other folders that look like system folders that may also be important./////////////

I believe this is misinformation.. only reason because I was having that endless HTC frozen screen so I formated my SD card, the FAT32 partition and the EXT3 partition in windows using Paragon Partition Manager, finally got back into recovery, wiped everything from cache to davlik cache as well.. then installed my rom.
If Clockwork was stored on the SD card.. I believe it wouldn't have booted.. got a little confused there. However, the Nandroid backups are stored on the SD card.. that I know for sure!

These devices make no sense to me. Maybe I didn't help anything with the copy and just trying to boot a few times would work. I would expect things to work or not work, but they work intermittently some times. Certainly increases the confusion/frustration levels.

Wouldnt be using the latest radio and using "recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.7-bravo.img" instead of the old one be better?

What is EXT3 partition ?
I would like to get more details about the sdcard ? I make my backup with nandroid and after I format the sdcard....so if I want restore the back up from Nandroid, it will not be there....sorry for the noob questions

Ext3 partition is for A2SD, I never touched my SD Card until I was rooted, updated radio, and loaded a custom ROM. I can't say whether or not the SD card plays a role in freezing during boot to recovery or not? But like I said I never partitioned my SD until after everything was done.....

Rooting and Flashing a custom ROM

I flashed the leaked froyo firmware I897UCJI6 on my samsung captivate using odin 1-click method. I have a working 2.2 now. My phone is not rooted. I am planning to flash a custom ROM and try other custom ROMs out there in the market. I've gone through a three part video series by mobiletechvideos on how to root and flash a custom ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884364). But, i still have a few questions.
1. For rooting, do i need to flash the phone back to the stock JF6?
2. In the xda link given above, i am fine until step #4. Step #5 is a little bit confusing to me. After i copy the root file to the root directory in the internal sd card on my phone, i rename it to update.zip. Also, i copy the clockworkrecovery to the root directory in the internal sd card in the phone and rename it to update.zip. Now, after i am doing with rooting and clockworkrecovery, i have to proceed further to flash the custom ROM. Now, the steps mentioned in the xda forum does not say anything about moving the custom ROM file to the root directory in the internal sd card on the phone. My question is: Do i need to copy the custom ROM zip file into the root directory of the phone? Do i need to rename the custome ROM file to update.zip as well?
Someone please help.

If you are on ji6 you will not be able to install clockwork because of 3e recovery. Two option, flash back to stock using

Thanks for the reply. What is 3e recovery by the way? I am able to flash back to stock (jf6) using odin 1-click by following the volume up + down method to download. My build number is not in that 1000 series. Are you referring to s/n number found under the battery? In many threads I have seen ppl saying if u r under 1009 build # then you need to use 3 key combo method. You are saying the opposite. I am confused now. Sorry sir but I think I need.more explanation. I thank you for your time

If you can get into dl mode issuing volume and usb then you have three button combo. Later builds can not use jf6 stock 1010 and up. Your build had to be there, and I do not think it its possible it is not in the 1000s if you have a captivate

Pls clarify if s/n # found under battery is actually the build number. Also, according to many posts in this forum, three buttom combo is
1. Vol up
+
2. Vol down
+
3. Press Power button
Since when USB slot became a button? I am sorry but I dont understand.

Thank you. Mine is 1007. So, now back to the question. I need to flash back to stock JF6 using odin 1-click. Then,i need to root the phone and install.clockworkmod recovery using the info found in the 3 part video series by mobiletechvideos. And,proceed with the custom ROM flash. WOW! I clicked on the xda link from my phone and the update.zip got downloaded into the download folder in my internal sd (i deleted it). I see the point now. I need to root only to back up all apps and system data such as contacts, sms,media etc. Otherwise, no need to root. Please conform the steps one last time if you don't mind:
1. Copy the update.zip into the root directory of my phone (how to get to the root directory, by the way! Sorry it is a dumb question). Also, copy the custom ROM zip file to the same root directory.
2. Using 3 button combo, follow the remaining steps.
Now, after I successfully flash the custom ROM, can I use the android market and install all the apps I use.

When you open my files app you are looking at the root of your sd. You will see your download folder, go to it long press either file select move phone will direct you to root if sd, select paste.
You are correct you need root to run programs like titanium backup to backup your apps, but when you flash stock they will all be gone either way. So unless you are rooted now you can not back up your apps. You can dl them again do not restore any system data just user apps. Backup contacts by exporting to ext sd, or sim

The simplest way there is to root/ flash a rom is to use a one click root program.

If you use this, it roots your phone for you. After you root with the program in the link above( there are videos on how to use the program if you get confused ) Download Rom Manager from the market. open up rom manager and select flash clockwork mod recovery. After that in the program rom manager click reboot into recovery( easier than holding volume buttons) the stock recovery will pop up when the phone reboots. Click reinstall packages. It will bring you back to the stock recovery, click reinstall packages for a second time and you will have cwm (clock work mod ) recovery. In clockwork mod recovery there is an option to back up your phone. do this before you flash a rom. after you back up turn your phone on. Make sure it is in usb debugging. connect to your computer and on your phone select mount sd. drag the downloaded rom .zip file into the sd. the root of you phone is just what ever drive your phone shows up as. unplug your phone reboot into recovery and in cwm recovery there is an option to factory wipe, do this and after it is done, click the option install zip. then choose zip from sd. highlight the rom . zip file you are flashing and select it. it will take a minute or too and when it is done just reboot the phone. First boot will take a while but once it boots your all set. any questions you can pm me and good luck.

Thank you. I have your toolbox program installed in my computer running 64 bit windows 7 home.premium edition. I have a few questions. My phone is running the leaked JI6 2.2 rightnow. What should I choose first from the toolbox? If I choose, flash to stock then do I need to select thw JF6 firmware file from somewhere or the tool itself will do the job? Sameway, if I click root, then do I need to select a root / clockwork files to finish rooting or again the tool itself will do the job? I understand for flashing the custom ROM I need to choose the the ROM .zip file. I watched the video about your program on mobiletechvideos on youtube. I think I need to watch it again or if you don't mind then can you give me the steps to use your toolbox (given what firmware I have currently running). Thank you

My apologies if this post is a dup, but I'm havin a hell of a time trying to find the proper steps to root the WiFi only XOOM i have hangin out next to me.
I am seeing a ton of posts about rooting the XOOM, with a good bit of them telling me different informationDated 27 April 2011)

I'm sure I am just second guessing myself over nothing, but just to be sure...
Is there a GOLDEN set of steps (or sticky), as of 27 APRIL 2011, that can give us (concerned rooters) the proper steps for rooting the WiFi only XOOM such that we can follow without minimal concern for the well-being of our tabs?
(I'm an embedded SW engineer, so I understand the repercussions of what I'm doing, which is why I'm to double checking the procedures before I attempt something that may brick my hardware)

I still do it the old fashioned way. I'm already unlocked so I just flash the boot image. With a clean system partition, you need to push a few drivers (.ko files) on plus "su" and the Superuser.apk. Superuser and su work together. And finally you need to create a new folder so that your real sdcard can be mounted. I think they changed the name from "sdcard2" to something new in 1.4.0.
Not exactly step by step but you can see which instructions that mirrors most.
New instructions involve CWM which I have not installed yet. I like to know what's done step by step as I have a Canadian system.img. I don't want that flashed over.

you could use the "one click" method found in the dev section. its really like a one click at a time, but goes slow so you can read and see what's going on. if your not comfy with adb I would suggest this method. then update the kernel with the kernel manager app.

I don't trust the "one click" methods. Me, I need to know how every part works together and what every step does. I'm more comfortable with using adb and fastboot manually than I am with someone's idea of user friendly. I'm also the kind of guy that would fix his own car rather than have a mechanic fix it for free.
I should take a look at it. The way you describe it, it almost sounds like a batch file.
Also, when I understand what's going on, I can apply the steps in different situations. For example, most of the instructions here are for a PC but I can do exactly the same things with my Mac Mini when my PC isn't convenient.

OK, let me propose one of the root method which is not required to flash any boot image but is required to flash ClockworkMod Recovery and to use the recovery for rooting.
Such method (i.e. using custom recovery) may work not only on WiFi US model (which I have), but also on other models (Verizon, WiFi Europe etc). But I tested it on WiFi US.
So the step by step are:
1. Install ClockworkMod Recovery v3.0.2.5 as described here:

This actualy means that you need to unclock bootloader and flash ClockworkMod Recovery.
2. Download attached Root_Xoom.zip file and put it on SD card
3. Insert SD card into Xoom
4. Boot Xoom in the recovery mode
5. In ClockworkMod Recovery menu choose "install zip from sdcard" and "choose zip from sdcard" and install Root_Xoom.zip
6. Reboot Xoom
Hope you will have Root after that.

ok so since I'm not currently rooted it looks like this should work for me. Gonna give it a shot in a little white once I get me some courage juice...

This is for rooting only (as OP requested). It is just to push su binary and superuser.apk into system partition. Nothing else.

after that, get kernel manager and install 1.3.2 for oc, sdcard etc.... 1.4.0 isn't stable is it?

Yes, if you need oc, sdcard etc..., you can flash the kernel you like. It can be done after or before kernel flashing.

Do you have to have an SD card to CWM/root your Xoom?

Yes, you need SD card. CWM installs file from SD card to make root

Can't root my Sensation- Please Help!

I have an HTC sensation z7z10a. I purchased this phone to be able to get on AT&T's 3&4g frequencies without having to upgrade my unlimited data plan for non smart phones. So far so good, my phone gets 4g and AT$T is not aware that I have a smartphone.
Naturally after spending enough time in XDA and other phone forums to figure this out I became interested in flashing a custom ROM.
I used the revolutionary method to gain S-OFF, installed CWM, and used CWM to create a backup image. I've managed to fully wipe and then restore to my backup image, so CWM is working.
My problem is whenever I go to flash a custom rom I don't understand which file to select in recovery mode. Every zip I have downloaded, (including the one I need to finally get my phone rooted) opens up to a series of subfolders, none of which contain the files I need. The sub folders are typically : System, Data and META-INF. So I can't get rooted without being able to use the recovery mode to flash.
I used my friend's pc netbook in order to run Revolutionary and install CWM. Now I am using my Macbook Pro to download potential Roms zip files and move them onto my phones SD card. Could this be the problem?
I"ve searched and searched for and answer to this issue to no avail, please help me to figure this out. I'm stumped.

The zip you have to flash is the ROM you download...am I missing something?

You do not need to extract the zip file. Just put it on the SD card and then go to the recovery mode and select the option install zip from sd card and install it. I believe if you flash a custom rom, you would be automatically rooted, so no need to root it separately. Hope this helped

Thanks for this advice, this is my first time attempting this. I think you are right that most roms come with root access so I may be able to skip that step.
I know what you are saying, don't extract the file, just move the zip over as is. Only on my mac the files are arriving as a folder with subfolders, not a zip package. This HAS to be the problem! I will look harder for Mac info on downloaded zips to see if I can figure out why this is happening. Thanks again.

Update:
So I fixed the folder problem by going into safari settings and unchecking the open safe downloads box. No all the zip files I'm downloading are staying intact as zips.
However I just tried to flash revolution hd with no success. The full wipe zip for this rom was a failure as well. I will now try downloading the root zip again and see if rooting first helps at all.

So now I am rooted. Success!

Ah....Steve Jobs and his desire to prevent the user from doing anything useful strikes from beyond the grave.
This is why I won't touch a Mac. They want to do everything for you, even if it's not what you want or need to be done. On the plus side, at least you only have to push 1 button to get the Mac to do the wrong thing!
Glad you figured it out! Be careful with the ROM flashing though. It quickly becomes a life consuming obsession.

[Q] How do unlock APN settings?

I'm using a TMOUS One S S4 vers and I've rooted and flashed the TWRP recovery. I want to use my stock ROM or one as close as possible to stock and unlock the APN settings so I can get wifi tethering to work. I'm currently on the UnKnown ROM, as it is pretty much stock, but the APN's are still locked. I tried the following tool from this link:

But it still didn't work for me. Is there another way to get the apns unlocked besides a custom ROM?

If you are using the mod I made would have to use the manual method of installing it into system.
The flash didn't work I am having trouble getting a flashable zip of it.
But if you use TWRP recovery file manager to copy it over with the instructions and then factory data reset (thats important so the system reads the settings again) and then setup the phone it does work on the 2.35 tmous stock rom.

Thanx for the reply. So I'm assuming you're talking about method #2 in that link. It would be great to use with the stock TMOUS ROM, but I'm having some issues implementing it.
1) Is there a tutorial on how to do the manual method? When I go into TWRP file manager, I see the "system" folder, but there is no "framework" folder there. Also, I'm vaguely familiar with chmod commands. I get lost at "chmod to 644." I know a few fastboot commands to get a recovery flashed from a directory but that's about it.
2) I have issues getting into recovery consistently. This may be a completely different issue but, the instructions I saw said to flash the ROM and then reboot recovery. Then flash the mod to fix the wifi. When I try to reboot recovery, my phone usually starts booting the ROM for the first time. I have to hold down the power button for 14 sec to shut it down and try to get to recovery again. It takes a few times for me to get there. I don't know if this causes problems with the fix being able to work because the ROM is starting to read on 1st boot?

Nevermind. I figured it out once I played around with TWRP. Very nice recovery and great mod. Everything is working correctly now on the stock ROM. Thanx again
FYI for others: Once you copy the "framework-res.apk" file to your storage card,
1) You have to go into TWRP, mount,
2) Mount the SD card and system by putting checks next to them
3) Goto home screen in TWRP and goto advanced
4) Select file system and navigate to SD Card and find the "framework-res.apk" file where you saved it
5) Select the file and then select "move"
6) Now navigate back by pressing the "up one level" at the top of each list until you get to root.
7) Now find the "system" folder and then the "framework" folder.
8) Select....... can't remember, but there's and option to move it there. It will confirm.
9) Select the file "framework-res.apk" in the directory you just pasted it to and select chmod
10) Type in 644 and select done.
11) Go back to the home screen and select "wipe" and "factory reset"
12) Now reboot system. Done.
APN's are no longer locked.

can you post the link to the ROM you are using?
have you had any issues with 4g data or wifi connections?

I'm was using the UnKnown ROM bit I've switched back to my stock ROM so no issues with data. and signal. The mod worked with the stock ROM so I suck with that.You can find it in the link above.

Can you please tell me what framework I am on? Is that the same thing as hboot. I am currently on 1.06 and I see 3.16 under hardware information. Is that compatible with your mod?
