Hi,
I'm new to HTC, and windows mobile. I'm having great difficulty in finding apps that I want, how do I go about finding them until the XDA marketplace is up and running?
I'm currently after an ebay app if there is one, and also a converter app. Also I've read somewhere that there's an app/cab file that allows any program to be in landscape or portrait, but I can't remember the name. Think it was gyrator or something but I can't find it, any idea?

I can't help you with the ebay app, but you want BsB Tweaks to allow rotation in applications, or try PLToggle (in my sig below).
For the ebay app, I'd recommend searching in the windows apps forum (in general), rather than a phone specific forum.
Hope this helps

Mate, before you do buy things .. search .. search .. search! this community has a lot to offer and there is bound to be a freeware that can do what you are looking for.
Of course when all fails default to buying the app. If you find what you are looking for consider donating to the hardworking developers here.

Hi Snerkler,
Searchng on XDA is not easy (I should know). Use this tool, which should give you a fighting chance...http://www.google.com/advanced_search?q=+site:http://forum.xda-developers.com&hl=en&lr=&as_qdr=all.
Also look here ..http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/
And if you google "windows mobile apps" or "free windows mobile apps" you will be surprised what you can find!
Unfortunately we don't have an app store like that other device; however there are thousands of apps out there.
Just thought of another 2 sites:
Clove....http://www.clove.co.uk/
Handango....http://www.handango.com/homepage/Homepage.jsp?storeId=2218
If you are stuck after all this then do one thing.......send me your phone and pack it all in.
Good luck chap
WB
PS PM me if you need more info but don't want to look stupid on here. However you have been getting loads of help off people here which is good; no one's told you to get lost yet or to RTFW (read the wiki (lol)).
Must be your excellent Karma. Do enjoy exploring the world of Windows Mobile.

There's a nice app store app you can get from http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-opnmarket.html that contains some of the xda initiatives (along with other developers creations). Otherwise just look through the forums for your device.
And of course there's Microsoft's own 'marketplace' app store for which there should be a 'Marketplace' app already installed on your phone (or you can go to
https://marketplace.windowsphone.com/default.aspx if you want to view it in a web browser (note that it doesn't work well if you're using Opera (despite that being on many flagship windows mobile handsets) - nice one Microsoft ).

Thanks Ian,

I've been playing around with the Android OS for some time now and have managed to accumulate a huge collection of Applications.
I decided to list the lot (750+ apps) on a site for you to view and download for free.
Get them here:
Replace the "z" with a "p" lol.
If you have a desire & want to try these apps out then please comment on what works for the HTC Desire and what doesn't (eg. Certain versions of Swype don't work at all and to fix this i have created another folder called 'Desire' where only proven working apps for the desire will be listed.
Enjoy.

Weak.
Simple, even for you.
Can't you comprehend that these aren't here for warez purposes? I simply want to see which ones are suitable for the desire but as there are so many i decided to let other people access my apps and test them out on their phones to sort of speed up the process.
Heres some other examples:
DxTop (any version) simply does not work for the desire. It keeps force closing.
CoPilot (any version) again does not work on desire. Says cannot run code (or something similar)
G1 camera flow works perfectly on the Desire.
See what i'm doing now?
There are people out there who are much more qualified to test these apps on the android platform and i'm just giving them the chance to while seeing what works.
Its Simple. If you dont want the paid apps to test then just don't download them. Have the free ones instead.

Whatever your stated intentions (which I understood perfectly the first time, thanks.. I just don't believe you), the fact is you've posted a large collection of paid apps on a publicly accessible site. Anyone can come here and steal those apps now. Not only is this against the market terms of service and the developer's wishes, it's against the forum rules.
Amended main post
There hows that?
Now the actual link is not posted on this site. Its now posted on my site (forum)

Doesn't matter if you hide it behind a link, you're still posting pirate software which is in breach of the forum rules.
Quite apart from that, you're hosting pirate software and distributing the links on a forum where some of the developers of said software are likely to be active members. I wouldn't be surprised if you receive some threats of legal action.

Posting warez or linking to sites containing warez is against forum rules. Please refrain from doing that in the future. Thanks.
Hi,
I decided to write a guide how to get rid of ads in Angry Birds Rio since I didnt found any solution in the web.
So... First download and install Ad free app from the market (root needed).
After that use your favorite file manager (ES explorer) and go to /system/etc/ and open hosts file.
Go to the end of it and add:
Code:
127.0.0.1 neptune.appads.com
127.0.0.1 neptune1.appads.com
127.0.0.1 neptune2.appads.com
127.0.0.1 neptune3.appads.com
127.0.0.1 galatea.appads.com
127.0.0.1 galatea1.appads.com
127.0.0.1 galatea2.appads.com
127.0.0.1 galatea3.appads.com
Save the file. Reboot maybe is need.
Enjoy your Angry Birds ad free version.
How I found the hosts?
Easy. Just extract the angry birds apk go to assets and open file project.properties.
Regards,
Ross

I dont want to argue with some guys which in our country call "wooded philosopher".
Means someone who dont have experience but argue with others cause he read something about somewhere

It works on Angry Birds and loads of others.
I was about to say something else.
These ads are there for a reason, and it's also the reason why you don't pay for the game.
Getting rid of ads, which bring profit to the game developers, equals stealing from them in the same way as pirating an app. You don't want ads? Buy a paid version. That would be fair.
I saw the feedback and understand they've put some nasty adds there in the last update (never downloaded, so I don't know first hand). Still, even downrating them would be a better idea IMO.
This is why more and more of developers will be switching to some type of ad-blocking detection, refusing to run an ad-supported app if ad-blocker is found.
Absolutely agree with you Jack_R1!
Android games are cheep so everyone can buy full version of them.
Unfortunately this version of AB is free but full of nasty animated huge ADs.
So I was forced to use my brain to remove them.
I wanted to share my opinion with other members which are pissed off there ads but I see some "wooden philosophers" spreading "brain" around
Regards!
P.S.
Btw you can stop ADs just by switching off your internet (wi-fi and mobile)

While I appreciate the fact that you're trying to help, it doesn't give you the right to be rude... especially when other users are trying to be helpful. By your definition of wooden philosophers, they are people closed to ideas other than what they think is right... and you're demonstrating that first hand by turning down posts from other users.
You have offered a tutorial for ad blocking, for that I am grateful... but that doesn't mean nobody else is allowed to suggest a different approach...
And please understand that despite what you may think, this is not YOUR thread... you don't own this, or any other part of xda, just because you started a thread. Its a community and we're all here to share and learn. So learn to be a little more tolerant about other members' opinion. Everybody can be wrong at times... it's not a sin, it's being human.
Peace.

If I switch off "mobile network" in quick settings, then the adverts never appear, probably no surprise really.
Am I missing something, or is there some fatal flaw in this simple solution?

Nope - ads have to be downloaded when you play - apps apparently can't cache them (thank god) - so if you have no internet, you have no ads.
Ad free, ad away, pdroid and droidwall. that's my recipe.

Agree, at most cases droidwall should be all what's needed to stop adds (especially at ab).
I would recommend to the op to try other solutions (and also search for them) and be open for different ways, before starting to flame others (or much better never flame others), even if the attempt to help is appreciated.
I use adblock on my desktop browser, but i find getting rid of ads in mobile applications kind of questionable practice.
Thank you for sharing this

I guess he said what he said cause ad free doesn't get rid of angry birds rio ad's, and so you would know just reading his first post, where the first step is to download ad free to edit the host file that is created.
As both Jack_R1 and artemy_m have pointed out, in different ways, there is a reason for these adverts being in there - they help to generate money for the developers. Without these we will end up going down the Apple route whereby you have to pay for most things and it will all be locked down much more.
I use ad-block software with my PC web-browser, in order to get rid of all the really annoying audio/video ads which take up stupid amounts of bandwidth and actually interfere with day-to-day working (have you ever tried showing a customer where to look for certain things only to suddenly get an audio jingle for women's sanitary products coming from your speakers?) On my PC, however, I have the ability to NOT block ads on those sites I choose to support - Linux sites, Slashdot and the like. That is my choice - and if it were simpler on Android then I might do the same thing. However, I can't do that easily - and the way I see it, if an app is useful to me then I either purchase the pro version to get rid of the ads, or I support the developer by leaving the adverts on.
Has anyone here heard of this new "feminist programming language?" And is it for real? At first i thought it was a joke, but a quick google search shows MANY pages that are discussing it. Ill post a link to one of those pages. I especially like how they are "getting rid of violent programming terminology" (i.e. execute, boot, kill). Lol somebody please tell me this is a joke.

It doesn't work at all. Search "everywhere" or "threads" "forum and devices" all yield identical result. And you'd know that if you actually use the function yourself.
There is another button says "search forums" and all it does is search globally.
I think XDA-Developer's new website is trying to boost the site's activities by deliberately crippling the search function and encourage people to ask the same question again and again.
A prime example of "if it is not broken, let's break it for kicks"
Someone is having some sort of weird satisfaction by watching their users hopelessly trying to find their answer and couldn't find any. It's like watching his pet mouse couldn't get out of a maze.
The previous search was intuitive. It used to produce results sorted to newest first. Please tell me how to get results sorted to descending order of date now.

This message was from quite long ago, some things may have changed. When I wrote this message I used the function, and it worked just fine.
I know, the search function isn't working flawlessly rn, but things keeps moving, so be patient.
And do you seriously think xda is deliberately breaking the search function to make users mad ?? Do you really think that xda would deliberately force its users to clog the already full Q'n'A forum with useless repeated questions ? You're saying "boost the activity" when it's literally spamming the forum with old questions that contributors will just answer by ("see here: link)" anyway. XDA isn't payed for how much post/thread is created, in fact it's the opposite! You come with assumptions on how works the whole thing, those are assumptions, so you can complain about the search function no problem but keep those theories of yours for yourself.
And if you want you can just use google:
[your search] site:forum.xda-developers.com
I get it you're frustrated, but be nice when posting, I would've happily told you that trick if you did so. I still did, but it wasn't heartily...

I can't agree more with @kngharv : It's impossible that a website like xda-developers hasn't managed (unless intentionally) to fix this issue in months. I'm sure they could fix it in a couple of hourse if they wanted to.

In January at the time when the post was created that you quoted the search function was indeed broken. However, at least for me it seems to be completely fixed already for weeks or months. I've personally no issues at all, neither with a general search on XDA or e.g. a specific in-thread search. For me it's obvious that meanwhile the complete database has been transfered and indexed after the transition from vBulletin to Xenforo and the new servers.
If you still have problems please provide some more information, examples or screenshots to allow us to support and assist you in fixing your problem. Such a generic statement like yours isn't really helpful in trouble-shooting.
And I hope you don't mind that I don't respond to the unsubstantial assumptions and accusations in the post to that you completely agree. Even during the times of the broken search we enforced implementation of rule no. 5 of the XDA Forum Rules, and removed duplicated posts or questions or closed threads if a subject matter related one already existed.
