New Programming language......???? - General Questions and Answers

Has anyone here heard of this new "feminist programming language?" And is it for real? At first i thought it was a joke, but a quick google search shows MANY pages that are discussing it. Ill post a link to one of those pages. I especially like how they are "getting rid of violent programming terminology" (i.e. execute, boot, kill). Lol somebody please tell me this is a joke.

New Place to Upload Your Files

Hey guys (and gals)
I made an Upload file manager for us here at XDA-Developers.
For those of you who hate rapidshare or megaupload like I do, I'm donating some of my 3terrabyte bandwidth to you all. No pop-ups or advertising either..
You are able to Upload almost anything that you would like. (Roms, images, cab files...ect)
Maximum of 100MB (if you need more, please send me an email or PM)
Very easy to use and navigate
I will support hot-linking (only from XDA-Developers)
All phones listed
Uploader does NOT have a progress bar during upload, just be patient.
To get started :
Follow this link
http://envmyz.com/xda
Read the rules and conditions
Click on Shares near the top.
Select your phone.
List will be displayed, from here you can upload, sort, view, and display file information.
Clicking on the file will display file infornation on the side bar, you can right click copy download link to paste it into your post if you would like.
I started some files in the Wizard section.
Hope this goes over well.
email is [email protected] if you have any questions. Enoy
*Moderators - If you want to make this a sticky, feel free too. Post it in other forums as well.
I just read your rules and it made me laugh.
Code:
No files with illegal content, for example pornography, child pornography, racist material and/or unauthorized copies of copyrighted material. This statement of categories is not the completed list.
All of the OS version violate this first rule. So, are you saying that you only want programs and such uploaded, no OS's. Thats the reason that XDA had to stop hosting these also.
They are there to cover my ass, feel free to upload anything you want

Maybe because of the unfreezing process you have no inner monologue
As many have learned, there are no CYA procedures that will get you away from M$ lawyers. You are taking on a big thing here. Good luck if you continue to allow this.
maybe you can create some folder for us
like
ROM, OEM PACK, Programs
btw! very cool site!!
indeed, it could prevent confusion - i uploaded small oempack with clear name , though... but it may be not rule for others...
thanks for that place.
---------
upd: erm.. file WF2.6 in wizard section may be ROM, that i made - Wayfarer 2.6 final...i don't know who uploaded it there, i did not...I will UL readme soon, if i may..
very nice interface.....
excellent!!!
thanks
For some reason, adding sub-directories cant be done, only new shares can be added. So untill I can figure out how to do sub-directories.. the folders are staying as they are.

Just called Ajax File Browser (AFB) - search for that in google.
Looked like my server was having some problems, but the techs worked it out. Site is running faster than ever.
*Any mods wanna sticky this?
Site went through a server move, XDA-uploads is back up.

[Q] anyone know what the process scribble is?

i have a process running that says its called scribble... com.htc.mysketcher... anyone know what this is?
Judging from the name, I'd say it is likely to be an application or widget where you can scribble. Seeing how it is an HTC software, I'd say it is their Notes widget.
thanks for the response, that sounds viable but i don't have the notes widget installed .....
maybe it's this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696193

Thanks for your delightful information . now let me tell you how retarded you are:
1. i do not have a custom boot animation running
2. Upon first viewing your link to "delightful information" did you stop to think that maybe I wouldn't install this boot animation because it might not be the proper size for our screens?
3. if I had in fact installed this, don't you think I would have enough common sense to know what the process might be considering this would be the name of something I MYSELF had installed?
4. Try posting a useful comment instead of a smart**s one
Scribble is an htc app used for two things. The first is its an app that works with htc's stylus enabled devices (e.g. The flyer and evo view) to draw or "sketch" directly onto the screen. The other thing, and why its on our phone, is it is the app that facilitates htc's built in screen capture feature.
i can confirm screen capture, i took scribble out and bye bye screen capture
awesome, good info, thanks alot to the both of you!

woah, calm down there. My post wasn't meant to sound like a "smart**s" one.
I just tried to help. Although, the lmgtfy might let you think that, i just added it for the giggles.
I truly apologize if my post offended you in any way.
I just wanted to show you, detailed as possible, how i got this (indeed delightful,
because information is always delightful ) information.
You were the one who opened a thread with "blabla scribble blabla"
without mentioning your ROM that you're using
the date you first stumbled over this process
what applications you have may installed or other modifications/configurations you made to your device
what research you've done to get additional information
and finally:
not sharing your research results in your post
You gave SOME information as an answer to my post, but not in your
original post. Why not?
Would you've shared more detailed information on your problem
in your original post, i might have not came up with such a "smart**s" reply.
And i am the one you call retarded. Nice move.
As i understood this forums, this place isn't meant for:
"I have a question xy, can someone give the answer?"
It's meant for:
"I have a question xy, i have done this and that to resolve it, but i still have some open points i want to clarify, can someone help?"
The difference is, that you SHARE the information you have, to PREVENT people come up with guesses (like i did).
Guesses will form up to rumors, rumors spread out, become an urban legend and
everyone will soon swear to god that he or she knows someone who had "xy" resolved by some urban legend... true story.
In addition, this place is not for:
"yo, the answer is bla"
it is for:
"yo, the answer is bla and i have this and that information to back up my claim, go and check up if this works for you too."
Instead of calling me "retarded" you could've simply stated in a proper manner,
that my given information is not useful at all, because of the resolution or something
else i could've easily checked myself but i did not, because i was in a hurry or whatever.
This would've improved my behaviour in this place, but now i am just frustrated
with some guy i don't even know just because i tried to contribute.
Sorry for using my crystal ball, it was foggy in there.
I guess i am back to reading this forums, instead of contributing to them.

I think you're really reaching here. In a prefect world that'd be great but this is the real world. There really was nothing wrong with the OP! I understood it just fine and was able to answer the question with no problem. I also think that anyone that took 2 seconds to read it should have understood as well. Also if there were a rule that you had to post links to back up every answer then I wouldn't have even posted the correct answer because I don't have time to track down links for simple questions that I know, I know the answer to.

[Q] Learning coding

I'm looking to learn how to code, mainly because its something that has always interested me but I have never done. I have no experience in it at all. I'm looking for a book that can set me up with the very basics in java (or is it better to start off with a different language?) and hopefully I can move on from there.
If anyone knows of any good books that could help me I would greatly appreciate a link to it.
Thankyou.

So even on sophisticated websites like this there are still childish idiots like yourself on them. Yes you're probably right in that I should have searched before creating a new thread, however obviously I didn't think of that.
Maybe next time you should try and show maybe at least an inch of maturity when posting. Oh and for someone who would like me to donate to them and buy/download their apps you're not going the right way about it.
I dont know if that because you joined before me or have more posts than I do, this makes you think you have some superiority over me or new members, but it doesn't and remember with every new member is potentially another donation to you for your work. So if you want to carry on alienating these member towards you then carry on but if you don't then you might want to re-think your mentality towards them, because personally I wont be donating or ever downloading any of you apps.
With that said, thankyou for the links.

I don't want anything from you.
You want something from this forum, more exactly from its members.
You want an answer.
You did not pay anything for the knowledge available for free here, neither the time a member puts up to help you out.
What you could do is show some courtesy by using the search function to not waste the time of people who are willing to help out.

Both my join date and post count are indirectly related to this.
It just means that i have seen too many threads like this, which could have been avoid by a few seconds of search.
What is more astonishing is that i still browse the question and answer forums to help people out.
Yeah maybe some people won't get the answer they wanted to hear, but hey you got your answer.
Im confused now, from looking around it looks like python is the most basic of languages but if i was to start with a dummy book for that, would it actually help me achieve learning java? I dont want to get the wrong book and be completely lost because I havent learnt the complete basics.
It seems like everyone says different things and I cant get a clear answer of where to start.
@Dark3n I'm not going to sit here and argue, you have your view I have mine let's leave it at that. If you would like to help me (which somehow i doubt) that would be great, thanks.

The most basic language would be machinecode (ASSEMBLER).
But beleive me that it is really painfull to write and learn.
Python is a nice language to write in, no doubt.
But you should think about what you want to do with your programming skills?
Something Android related?
Then you should look at C for linux kernels and the lower levels of android.
or
Java for Apps and the higher levels of the android os.
If you want to learn java there is no advantage in learning python first, besides that you can program in python and java.
I would like eventually to create an app for android, which is obviously done in java but if i got even the most basic of java books would i still be lost?
Edit: I just remembered there was a thread similar to this one where i already had a lengthy discussion about this topic.

Not totally lost, you will learn about variables, if statements, loops, classes etc. those things are all still valid when writing apps. Those somewhat remain valid through most of the programming languages.
But basic java does not cover connecting your java code with the android user interface or making use of any android feature (rotate display, sensors, telefon,gps,etc.).
But seriously you don't need a book. Of course you can get one if you really want to. I would probably search the amazon bestseller list for something on android programming (for dummies) which does not require previous programming knowledge.
You can also just jump into it, google for "android hello world tutorial" or something like that.
But the official hello world tutorial should do.
Should make you able to write your very first app pretty quick. It's only a "Hello World" app, but hey thats where everyone starts out.
Aside from the programming itself, knowledge of Linux and *nix orientated operating systems would be useful. Terminal commands and such will prove invaluable if you take application development to a professional level in the future.
C and Java are obviously what's mainly involved in Android. But if you want something simple to begin with look at HTML and CSS (which are basically just translation matrixs not languages).

HTML and CSS knowledge would help a bit with the android user interface, but not with the actual code of the apps/programs themself.
I would advise the OP not to start with HTML and CSS if he wants to get into the programming buissness.
Unless you are going to make webpages HTML and CSS takes you pretty far of the track.

HTML and CSS, are two useful skills to have regardless. As you mention for interfacing, and also for the ability to work with Web Apps in the future. For myself learning Javascript and PHP has certainly helped with getting into Java/C.
Certainly HTML/CSS aren't related to learning Java and C but it's a good entrance point to coding in general. Although you yourself may see it as sidetracking, it can help some not to jump in at the deep end.
I wish the OP the best of luck.
Hey dar3n, I had posted a similar thread as well, minus all the attitude, but I agree it does get posted alot, after talking to u and searching around a bit. CONGRATULATIONS! the page facebook dot com.prizes.etc. says: I won!!! PLEASE TTT

Ok xda. Its getting pretty tough to use your website. (without an adbocker that is).
I assume that most of your revenue comes from ads.
However the ad-videos on the desktop site just about slow my browser to a crawl for some reason. Never happens on any other sites.
And now whenever i try to browse xda on my phone's browser i get directed to a fake facebook page that tells me I won a "prize". Just sign your life here!!!
Once im on that page i have to close the window and start over. It has for the most part prevented me from using this site for the last few months.
I cant be the only one getting this.
I understand and am happy to see some adds around. Even if they're overwhelming. As long as they aren't hijacking my browser to the point where i cant use your site.
An adblocker helps (sometimes), but then i cant view the ads that give you your revenue.
It is very counterproductive. I love this site and would like to see it live on. But at this rate the doom is imminent.
If anybody has experienced this and similar please reply.
Thanks and sorry to B!tch...
Literally every other link i click on takes me to a fake prize.
2 words... C'MON!!!!
if you come across any more such ads, please post in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1696660
let us know which page and what ads you're seeing.
Thanks

It doesn't work at all. Search "everywhere" or "threads" "forum and devices" all yield identical result. And you'd know that if you actually use the function yourself.
There is another button says "search forums" and all it does is search globally.
I think XDA-Developer's new website is trying to boost the site's activities by deliberately crippling the search function and encourage people to ask the same question again and again.
A prime example of "if it is not broken, let's break it for kicks"
Someone is having some sort of weird satisfaction by watching their users hopelessly trying to find their answer and couldn't find any. It's like watching his pet mouse couldn't get out of a maze.
The previous search was intuitive. It used to produce results sorted to newest first. Please tell me how to get results sorted to descending order of date now.

This message was from quite long ago, some things may have changed. When I wrote this message I used the function, and it worked just fine.
I know, the search function isn't working flawlessly rn, but things keeps moving, so be patient.
And do you seriously think xda is deliberately breaking the search function to make users mad ?? Do you really think that xda would deliberately force its users to clog the already full Q'n'A forum with useless repeated questions ? You're saying "boost the activity" when it's literally spamming the forum with old questions that contributors will just answer by ("see here: link)" anyway. XDA isn't payed for how much post/thread is created, in fact it's the opposite! You come with assumptions on how works the whole thing, those are assumptions, so you can complain about the search function no problem but keep those theories of yours for yourself.
And if you want you can just use google:
[your search] site:forum.xda-developers.com
I get it you're frustrated, but be nice when posting, I would've happily told you that trick if you did so. I still did, but it wasn't heartily...

I can't agree more with @kngharv : It's impossible that a website like xda-developers hasn't managed (unless intentionally) to fix this issue in months. I'm sure they could fix it in a couple of hourse if they wanted to.

In January at the time when the post was created that you quoted the search function was indeed broken. However, at least for me it seems to be completely fixed already for weeks or months. I've personally no issues at all, neither with a general search on XDA or e.g. a specific in-thread search. For me it's obvious that meanwhile the complete database has been transfered and indexed after the transition from vBulletin to Xenforo and the new servers.
If you still have problems please provide some more information, examples or screenshots to allow us to support and assist you in fixing your problem. Such a generic statement like yours isn't really helpful in trouble-shooting.
And I hope you don't mind that I don't respond to the unsubstantial assumptions and accusations in the post to that you completely agree. Even during the times of the broken search we enforced implementation of rule no. 5 of the XDA Forum Rules, and removed duplicated posts or questions or closed threads if a subject matter related one already existed.
