Girlfriend's ChaCha Issues - Help - HTC ChaCha

Hi Guys,
My Girlfriends ChaCha is getting progressively worse. She is getting some odd issues:
Blue Icon staying on screen after keyboard select is up
Screen not registering touchers
Losing spaces rather quickly (even though I make sure all apps are to SD when possible)
General Slowness.
Question is, what is the best way of sorting this out? Is a factory reset a good way to go? Is there any new firmware for it (bought in June this year). I will checking whether it's S-OFF tomorrow etc.
Thanks for any input.
Jake

try hardreset =) (factory) best to be done using bootloader (disable fastboot then boot with vol. down presed while pressing powerbutton)
what apps were installed?
just get the ones you really need!
maybe a virus? (yes there are ones for android!)
report if issue is solved when no additional apps are installed (directly after hardreset)

Thanks a bunch! Will help a lot.
She will be installing mainly Handcent SMS and 1 or 2 games (which will go straight to SD Card).
Does anyone know if it's possible to remove stock apps without rooting? Some of the apps on the phone are useless to her, like stocks etc etc.
Thanks .

These are called "bloatware" mainly because no one actually needs them. Unfortunately you need to be rooted to remove them, via Titanium Backup. To be rooted you need to have CWM installed. To install CWM you need to have S-OFF which is only possible via XTC Clip (currently).
What I suggest is find a local gsm service that has an XTC clip (most of them have it, since it's compatible with all HTC devices) and pay 9-10 euros for a S-OFF and a superCID; they know what to do.
After the S-OFF you can update the OS to the latest 1.52 version which has Android 2.3.5. The roms are in the dev section. You can find more info in the guide in my signature.

Thanks for your detailed information!

Maybe your gf's chacha needs some Vagisil or some Summer's Eve, or maybe you just need to give it a rest for a few days. I'm lmao, man. That sentence, hell, the thread name, makes me giggle like a 12 year old boy.

I think you need to grow up.

And I think you need to read up on the Urban Dictionary before talking about about your girlfriend's Chacha issues right after you pull that stick out of your humourless arse.

[Q] post root questions

I'm looking to root my inspire for 2 simple reasons. To be able to uninstall the bloatware and have access to the amazon app store. As far as I can tell bubby's 1 click root seems to be the easiest method so far.
I just have a few questions on what to do after or if I'm successful in gaining root.
I'm planning on sticking with the stock rom and not doing anything extra then what bubby's instructions say. (using his rc2)
The gold card....Can I still use it as a SD card in my phone? Do I have to format the card again to restore my backed up files on it or can I just simply add them to the card? Or do I have to get a new SD card?
I've already gotten the OTA update that was released a couple days ago...will the stock rom have HSUPA enabled? Can I still use the OTA update to install updates as they come out or will I have search online for custom updates and install them manually?
Lastly...will I run in to any other problems or glitches? Sound working? Increase/decrease in battery life? Increase/decrease in speed? Baseically will all the apps and functions of my phone still work as well as they did before root?
I feel like I have searched everywhere for answers to these questions but no luck....So any help would be greatly appreciated.
I am new to this too, but I did run across the answer to your SD Card question. Yes, you can use it again as normal without formatting it. At least that is SOME answer to get you started...lol :0)

I had the same question after I first rooted using a gold card as I haven't used one before...best I can tell, it still functions as an sdcard with no differences.

It should but AT&T's definition of HSUPA varies from device to device and region to region. You may get OTA updates, but keep in mind the update may clear your ability to sideload apps and may clear the root access once applied. So yes it might be better to search for custom updates

In regards to the goldcard...
You may want to consider holding on to it for future possible use (in case you somehow need to root another inspire, you won't have to make another one).
Either buy a 4gb for the goldcard if you want to use the 8gb that came with the phone, or take the opportunity to get a bigger one for daily use in your phone, and use that 8gb for the goldcard.
In regards to OTA updates...
The one on your phone will be lost in the rooting process. After its done, though, you can reflash the same thing back onto your phone... The same Rom is available over in the dev section. Future OTA updates will have to be manually updated by way of this forum. Fear not, they'll be here.
In regards to glitches...
You'll only be left with no sound if you don't finish the process fully. In order to gain root, a temporary downgraded Rom (that has no sound) has to be flashed first. Then, the functioning stock Rom is flashed back on.
People complain they "lost sound after rooting" because they don't follow the process through to completion... Putting a working Rom back on.

I have made myself an expert with this stuff LOL...rooted my HTC last week with the simple one click one.......Number 1 is don't change your ROM at all...at least don't go to CM7....you will have major problems with it...........GPS will not work, trust me.
Also, if you change your radio, your also screwed because your UP and DOWNLOAD will be messed up and your GPS won't work as well...i myself am tyring to find a root solution that won't touch my radio.....only push an exploit that will give me unknown sources to be installed and for WIFI tether...that's it for me.
Now I'm curious.
Now that this is out: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1058042
Couldn't someone download this and rename it PD98IMG.zip, boot into hboot and bypass the whole OneClick/Hack kit?
Or does that only work after you're rooted?

Are you seriously advising others to not change their Rom or radio because YOU had a bad experience?
Or suggesting that because something didn't work right for you that it will not work for someone else?

The problem is to get s-off you have to downgrade the Rom/radio . I am still not rooted I have made my gold card just not sure what Rom/ radio to use . I got the inspire on Monday and am still trying it out not liking the battery life at all or the hissing in the call audio .

Your waiting to root so you can try out the phone first is a good idea, however, those things you aren't liking so far are actually improved with many custom roms.

Anyway to gain temproot for now?

Hey,
I was wondering, is there anyway to gain temproot until we have full root? Am I right in thinking that temproot allows programs requiring root access to work e.g. AdFree?

1. First download the Gingerbreak.apk file.
2. Save on your computers desktop.
3. Connect the phone to your computer. (do not connect using htc sync)
4. Mount SD card as flash drive as you generally do for USB cable file transfers.
5. Copy the downloaded Gingerbread apk file to SD card root.
6. You should have any File Manager (e.g., Astro File Manager) on your phone. If not, download from Market. These are generally free apps.
7. Disconnect your phone from computer and launch File Manager. You will find in the menu of the phone.
8. Follow the onscreen instructions on File Manager to install APK to your phone from SD card root. You may also use the default application installer software to do this.
9. After installation completes, open the APK.
10. Press ‘root’ button. Simple, isn’t it?
11. The APK exploit will run for some time. Usually it runs for around 10 minutes. Your phone will be rebooted. In case it takes more than ten minutes for auto reboot, please reboot it yourself. Not to panic, this happens a lot of times.
12. Your device is now rooted. Congrats!
13. Make sure that SuperUser app is installed and is running. This is very important for you to enjoy the benefits of rooting.
In order to test if your phone has been successfully rooted, just click a screenshot of your phone. That should show that your phone has been rooted.
Yeah, but does it REALLY work?

Gingerbreak exploit is patched on the SGS II so doubt that will work. Also if phone needs to reboot, no way will root persist due to signed locked bootloader. Go ahead and try but we will need some L33t devs to break this phone.

It would be great if we could get this partial root. I personally don't mind not being able to flash custom ROM, but it is very important to me to be able to use some apps that require root permissions like adfree or titanium backup. From what I understand, this 'half-root' should not be very difficult to achieve cause it is not needed to mess with the bootloader for this purpose. The only requirement is to be able to uninstall htc sync for some time.
Here also a link detailing the differences between root levels and clarifying vocabulary. I am posting this cause it has been very useful for me to help understand, so it might also serves others..

[Q] First time rooter, have a few questions!

Hello community - I've just become a member with my shiny new Nexus S from WIND Mobile here in Canada.
I've been bugged by my friend with an Experia Arc to start rooting and I'm going to take his advice. I just have some question since I'm new to this and the various tutorials don't seem to answer them...
Firstly: My phone is a Nexus S (dur) running 2.3.4. It's the GT-I9020T model (the aws version which in the States is under T Mobile).
Now on to the questions:
I was going to follow this guide in order to gain root access to my phone, then put on clockwork recovery, back it up and flash myself Cyanogen Mod
addictivetips.com/mobile/how-to-root-nexus-s-with-a-single-click-using-superboot
Thing is, there's a disclaimer on the page saying that if I'm using a retail version the phone, I need to unlock the bootloader... but it doesn't tell me how to tell if I AM using a retail version, or what a retail version of the phone is.
I know, probably a stupid question, but I don't want to risk a bricked phone!
Also, if I need to unlock the bootloader - and subsequently erase all data in the process - is there any way I can back up what I already have on the phone?
Second:
When I'm done with the rooting, putting Clockwork recovery will allow me to make a NANDROID backup - does this include absolutely EVERYTHING on the phone? Apps, contacts, etc.
Third:
Once I've flashed Cyanogen Mod, will I lose all my contacts, or will they still be sync'd to my google account? Also, will I need to manually reinstall all apps from the market.
Finally:
Lets say something goes wrong with my phone inside my year warranty, is it possible to restore the phone completely to manufacturer settings so I can still get warranty service if need be? (I doubt it, just would like clarification).
Thanks for any help you guys give me! And if I've been an idiot and asked repetitive things, just point to the thread that answers them. I'm new to all of this.
Regards,
Tal.
Retail version means you bought the phone through your carrier vs buying an unbranded/named version from a third party source such as ebay or what have you, clockwork recovery does NOT back everything up, get titanium back up, its free in the market and back your contacts up which ever way is convienant..i.e I use tmobile contact back up on my vibrant. Titanium will back up your apps and data.
I'm fairly new to the root game, but ive learned alot, ive been able, with the help of some amazing developers and their ROMs, to get my battery life from a gandful of hours to 24 hours plus....
Happy rooting buddy, and good luck!
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Actually, clockworkmod (nandroid) does back up absolutely eveything. You backup your stock ROM, flash 20, flash your backup, and your back exactly where you started on your stock rom. Titanium backup only backups your apps& system settings, nandroid backups your whole phone OS.
Alright, wicked - clockwork will get it all. that's great.
Now, to unlock the bootloader (which I need to do apparently to install clockwork) will erase everything - is there a way around that? Are my contacts synced with google's services? I don't care about apps - I can get those back but I DO care about my close to 130 numbers >_<

Your contacts SHOULD be saved on googles server after you sync. As a precaution what I always do before a wipe is go to contacts, click menu, import/export, export to usb storage. This way if for whatever reason when you resync your phone and your contacts are missing, you can use this as a backup essentially

everything that is synced come back after a flash, gmal, calendar, task, contacts, picasa albums, etc, etc...
just make sure sync is marked in settings>account & sync>your account
even the apps, wifi and bookmarks come back if you chose to backup it in google account!!
You can always check on your Gmail -> Contacts if it has the list of all your contacts. If yes, that means it'll auto-sync the next time you boot your new ROM and put in your settings.

BLN. There's a free version in the Market but it's so good you might want to consider buying the Pro
Just make sure you use a Kernel that supports BLN, it will be mentioned in the Kernel's feature list.
I don't know about the superboot, it appears that it should work, but I'd prefer the normal, somewhat longer way of doing it. The one you can find in the sticky here
Greetz
Hmm I figured I'd just grab a stock kernel that supports BLN now I figure since I'm here I'll ask: what does a non-stock kernel do for me? and what would the "best" one be for a nexus s?
Sorry for all the questions I'm hungry for knowledge!
there is no "best" kernel... it's just like rom, you need to test and make your own choice.
you know, you can change the kernel "on the fly", you flash one and if you don't like, just flash another one and you don't lose anything.
the most popular kernel is netarchy one, but in my daily use, it seems a little laggy, so i'm using morfic uv11... but it's really your choice!

From the FAQ, all credit goes to the original poster(s):
In the event you want to return to stock, simply flash the NAND backup found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884093 . This will restore everything, including the stock recovery image. Then as mentioned above go into the bootloader/fastboot mode and enter "fastboot oem lock" in ADB.

Okay....having some issues here :S
I'm following the guide on this forum for the 9020T TO THE LETTER.
These steps are confusing me:
Select Browse my computer for driver software - Okay, no problem.
"point it to where you downloaded the Android SDK 2.3 (..\android-sdk-windows\google-usb_driver)"
Make sure to CLICK "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"
Then from the list 3 choices select Android Bootloader Interface
Click to collapse
I found out that I had to download the drivers from the SDK first after some searching...ugh. Anyhoo, once I got them and throw my phone into fastboot, I don't see any "Android Bootloader interface" driver, only two choices: Android ADB Composite Device" or "Android ADB Device"
Halp?

[Q] HTC Inspire "AS-IS" phone image backup

Hi
I just bought a new HTC. Do u know if there is a pc / laptop application from which i can take a complete "As-is" image of the phone?
I want this just in case if i mess up playing with the mobile, i can use the PC application and restore the complete image as i bought using USB connecting to
phone.
Thanks
If you mean after you've set it up(apps and personal config) on the stock rom, no there isn't a way.
Thanks
Is there way to get the original ROM / Image? let us i do not want the apps and personal config thru PC application connecting thru USB?

If you look in bubbys simple one click thread or the hack kit thread, there are links to the stock RUU. You can run the RUU from your PC through USB to phone or through hboot.

I'll add to the above by saying, once you're rooted, it's a different story.
At that point you can flash clockwork recovery, which will allow you to back-up your phones state at that time, which is what you're asking to do now.
The difference is there's no way of doing it to the phone out of the box... As at the point it's not rooted, and the mechanism of backing up in the manner to which you refer is only available with a custom recovery, which is only available on rooted phones with s-Off.
It's a shame, as I wouldn't have minded doing the same thing back before I rooted, but... No go.
A hard reset will restore your phone as you bought it. If you want to save apps and data, there are apps for backing up. You would just do restores after the hard reset.

No. The response was to a user with a stock phone already (non-rooted). If you're running a different ROM, then you're necessarily rooted and will have a tough time getting back to out-of-box condition.

You did not state in your original post that you are planning to root. Obviously, your concern is returning the phone for warranty purposes. I have read many post where users flashed a stock rom and used the s-on tool. It may not return you to exactly like out of the box, but it would be close enough to get you thru warranty. The stock rooted rom I am using now is exactly like stock before I rooted. If it weren't for the fact that someone tinkered with the kernel name, there would be know way to tell the difference.

Thanks for the reply.
I do not want root or do anything with the phone now. I just want to take a AS-IS out of box image of the phone using a PC application and store it. And then play with all phone.
Looks like from the mail threads, it is not possible. AM i correct?
I am waiting to see a response or a way and then even configure or play with my HTC inspire.

It's a 3-way chicken/egg thing. You can't do what you want without unfettered access to the main partitions on the phone. You can't get unfettered access without rooting. You can't root without installing a downgraded ROM and losing the current ROM.

If you're not going to root there is no need to "store" the factory image as it is part of your rom. When you want to reset it just do a factory data reset and it will be just like it was when it came out of the box.

You seem a bit confused. If you are not going to root, then my original reply would apply, a hard reset will get you back to out of the box. However, if you do not root, you will not be able to flash a custom rom.

[Q] Root for apps, not new ROM

Hi folks,
I have read a number of guides and threads on the forum but I can't work out if any apply to what I want to do. I'm sure the info may be there but its not clear to me.
Basically I want root on my Desire S so that I can use aps like LUKS Manager, Orbot and so on. I don't want to install a new ROM as I'm happy with my what I have at the moment.
My hboot is 2.00.0002 and my Radio is 3822.10.08.04_M
Is what I want to do possible? If not and I have to install a new ROM is it possible to find one that matches what I have at the moment? How do I identitfy what that is?
Thanks in advance for all the help!

everything is possible. Just follow the guides in this forum how to root your device (I recommend not to use htcdev). You don't have to install a new ROM.
But my personal opinion is to use a custom ROM, since they often have much more possibilities for customizing and a lot modifications for speed and performance. Are you still using stock ROM with sense 3.0 ?

Hi, thanks for the reply. I've only accepted the updates provded by my network so I guess thats the stock ROM?
Yep, its HTC Sense 3
I must be missing something basic because from all the guides i've read you have to install a new ROm to keep root?

Yes, it's stock right now.
At first you need to s-off your device (caution, you are about to void your warranty). You can do that using the revolutionary tool. Then you have to root, which can be done with superoneclick.
(edit: at this point you need to install a recovery like 4ext or cwm)
Root will not be undone when installing a
New ROM, neither do you need to install a new ROM. But I recommend to use a ROM with sense 3.5, it's much better.
You can find tutorials for everything I'm talking about right here in the forums.
Sent from my Desire S using XDA App
Ah, thats great, thanks. I didn't get that superoneclick could allow you to keep root.
Much appreciated.
I'll also look into the Sense 3.5. thanks again!
I forgot to mention: after rooting,
You need to install a custom recovery like 4ext or cwm. It's for backing up your system and flashing roms and updates and anything else you need
Sent from my Desire S using XDA App
Ok, so if I get s-off and then keep root by using superoneclick does that mean that I won't be able to receive updates through my network?

If your s-off and rooted the installer will not install the update (never tried cause I dont use stock rom) - but there are alway newest rooted stock roms here on xda and you can update your system manually. Most of the time before your carrier sends you the "official" update.
But yes, you have to do it by yourself.

But I think if you s-off and root and DO NOT install any other ROM you might still be able to download official updates for your stock ROM over the air
Sent from my Desire S using XDA App
Yes, you can use OTA (Over The Air update) ... but I think after that, you will loose your root
look at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1186401 FAQ's No. 5
ok, went to have a go at this but it looks like getting S-Off is quite complicated as well. I'm on HBOOT 2.00.0002.
Is there a shorter route to achieving root than:
downgrade
s-off
superoneclick (for root)
install custom recovery
If there isn't now is it likely to become available in the future or is the Desire S just difficult to do this with?
If You don't want to change rom, then stay s-on, unlock bootloader with htcdev and use superoneclick.

this will give you exaclty what you require
AND if you have S-OFF and apply an OTA you will stuck in a bootloop (white HTC splash screen)

I get that the steps might be easy enough, but there are quite a lot of them and instructions can contain loops when put together (I.e. downgrading to get root may require root in some instructionals). I do appreciate your help and advice though. I may well switch ROMs, especially in the future (I can't see myself affording a new phone any time soon!)

ok i am late but i think i can help.
first of all stop confusing the damn guy with different kinds of stuff. even i was like him before rooting my precious desire s. he will learn the advantages and disadvantages of revolutionary s-off as time passes by.
for now follow this guide as i did this (and trust me i had the same intentions as you do)
first get your adb and fastboot setup, this is the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1272595
then go to htcdev and unlock your phone. follow the process, its easier than you think.
after your done, download superoneclick and root your phone. if you dont know much about superoneclick then search around or google it and you will find your anwsers. one more thing, htcdev will reset your phone.
sorry if i am late if you have already rooteed your phone.
@up wth are U talkin' bout dude?
Case was closed two days ago, op was informed, understood, even thanked everyone. What are You trying to show in here?
