[Q] post root questions - HTC Inspire 4G

I'm looking to root my inspire for 2 simple reasons. To be able to uninstall the bloatware and have access to the amazon app store. As far as I can tell bubby's 1 click root seems to be the easiest method so far.
I just have a few questions on what to do after or if I'm successful in gaining root.
I'm planning on sticking with the stock rom and not doing anything extra then what bubby's instructions say. (using his rc2)
The gold card....Can I still use it as a SD card in my phone? Do I have to format the card again to restore my backed up files on it or can I just simply add them to the card? Or do I have to get a new SD card?
I've already gotten the OTA update that was released a couple days ago...will the stock rom have HSUPA enabled? Can I still use the OTA update to install updates as they come out or will I have search online for custom updates and install them manually?
Lastly...will I run in to any other problems or glitches? Sound working? Increase/decrease in battery life? Increase/decrease in speed? Baseically will all the apps and functions of my phone still work as well as they did before root?
I feel like I have searched everywhere for answers to these questions but no luck....So any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am new to this too, but I did run across the answer to your SD Card question. Yes, you can use it again as normal without formatting it. At least that is SOME answer to get you started...lol :0)

I had the same question after I first rooted using a gold card as I haven't used one before...best I can tell, it still functions as an sdcard with no differences.

It should but AT&T's definition of HSUPA varies from device to device and region to region. You may get OTA updates, but keep in mind the update may clear your ability to sideload apps and may clear the root access once applied. So yes it might be better to search for custom updates

Even with stock rom, you're gonna have hiccups now and then, but for the most part, it should be no different.

In regards to the goldcard...
You may want to consider holding on to it for future possible use (in case you somehow need to root another inspire, you won't have to make another one).
Either buy a 4gb for the goldcard if you want to use the 8gb that came with the phone, or take the opportunity to get a bigger one for daily use in your phone, and use that 8gb for the goldcard.
In regards to OTA updates...
The one on your phone will be lost in the rooting process. After its done, though, you can reflash the same thing back onto your phone... The same Rom is available over in the dev section. Future OTA updates will have to be manually updated by way of this forum. Fear not, they'll be here.
In regards to glitches...
You'll only be left with no sound if you don't finish the process fully. In order to gain root, a temporary downgraded Rom (that has no sound) has to be flashed first. Then, the functioning stock Rom is flashed back on.
People complain they "lost sound after rooting" because they don't follow the process through to completion... Putting a working Rom back on.

I have made myself an expert with this stuff LOL...rooted my HTC last week with the simple one click one.......Number 1 is don't change your ROM at all...at least don't go to CM7....you will have major problems with it...........GPS will not work, trust me.
Also, if you change your radio, your also screwed because your UP and DOWNLOAD will be messed up and your GPS won't work as well...i myself am tyring to find a root solution that won't touch my radio.....only push an exploit that will give me unknown sources to be installed and for WIFI tether...that's it for me.

Now I'm curious.
Now that this is out: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1058042
Couldn't someone download this and rename it PD98IMG.zip, boot into hboot and bypass the whole OneClick/Hack kit?
Or does that only work after you're rooted?

Yeah, unless the PD98IMG is signed by HTC, only a S-OFF hboot will load it.

Are you seriously advising others to not change their Rom or radio because YOU had a bad experience?
Or suggesting that because something didn't work right for you that it will not work for someone else?

The problem is to get s-off you have to downgrade the Rom/radio . I am still not rooted I have made my gold card just not sure what Rom/ radio to use . I got the inspire on Monday and am still trying it out not liking the battery life at all or the hissing in the call audio .

Your waiting to root so you can try out the phone first is a good idea, however, those things you aren't liking so far are actually improved with many custom roms.

Forgive my newbie question. Since this is just root.. Do we still have to use the side load wonder machine to get the app on in the first place? Rooting just allows us to do all the good stuff but att restrictions are still in place with out a custom rom?

First of all many thanks for the hack kit, I knew it was possible and you made it happen.
Hoping you can also post directions on how to put the Inspire 4G back to stock in case we return our unit for whatever reason, mine would only be for a hardware defect.

This is probably a stupid question (but I'm new to rooting and such), but can you still use an sd card for data storage after utilizing it as a gold card?

I read in some gold card guide that while you could do that, it's better if you don't. I don't remember the reasoning though.

I am confused right now, what is the gold card way everyone is talking about? When I rooted my Captivate(my first Android phone). I just used the odin3 one click root. Will this phone have that?

I dont want to install a rom, i just want

I just want to root and enable non market apps. That would be fine with me. Id also like the speeds to be fixed, but thats ok if they are not.
I tried this gold card tool, but it doesnt work. And im not going with the crazy version in the video. I dont care for all that stuff. Just want to root and install non market apps without having to need a pc to sideload. If i download an apk on the phone, i want to install it like a human
As far as i can tell, gold cards are for sim unlocking .... i dont need all that extra stuff
frustrated with this phone, but im still going to buy another one to replace the one i just got and gave to the wife.
I'm in the same boat. Just want to root and be able to install non market apps. I wish we don't had to downgrade. I heard people having issues with sound and WiFi. I already exchanged one inspire and would hate to have to exchange another one.

I know it doesn't sound pretty in the beginning but now that the HTC Inspire 4G Simple One Click tool is out you can get sideloading, remove the bloatware, and fix your UDPA in one fell swoop. (2 swoops really but it works and doesn't take all day to figure it out
You will need to make a gold card. It's all part of the same hack. I used the ace hack kit after i was rooted I just flashed the att1 stock rooted rom. It has everything you want on a stock rom.
I believe the one click method has a easy gold card maker.
Q: Do I need a goldcard for this?
A: Yes. This still downgrades your rom to achieve S-OFF.
Put the gold card in before starting the one click.
There lies part of the problem.

go to the unlockr.com and search make gold card. There video makes it really easy to follow. This method works. I used it for two inspires.
Don't be afraid and take a shot at it. If you follow the direction carefully, it's very easy. There is also a video tutorial (there may be some very slight differences, but it is still helpful when you have trouble with text directions. If you can see it done on video, you'll understand the next step better).

1. Create gold card using a utlility posted here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970157
2. Use bubby's tool to root your phone http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=961406
You should be done in less then an hour
I actually think the hack kit is easier. Plus you don't have to worry about cwm messing up.
I don't see how cwm is messing up? Just try to reflash it until it works. Or use the fix. Do you think rooting the phone with the desire hd method works? The easy one click tool? It includes visionary. Its the same phone, idk why it wouldn't.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Nope the inspire software closes the bug that allowed visionary to work. That's why the goldcard is needed so you can downgrade.
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk
That seems exsessive. Why reflash until it works when you can just do it once and have it work. Not to mention some people have had to get engineering hboot just to get it to work.

I just wanted to add something about bubby's tool. I used that process to root my phone. Afterward, I could not get the GPS to work at all. So, I reflashed the stock ROM (via SD method) and used SuperOneClickv1.7-ShortFuse to root the device. I have since loaded a Gingerbread ROM, but reloading stock (without losing S-off) fixed the GPS issue for me.
I guess the bigger news, and the point, is that the psneuter rooting process works on this device. I also used SuperOneClickv1.7-ShortFuse to enable non-market apps on the stock ROM.
psneuter works because when you went back to stock you were still S-off.

That is what I was trying to convey in my post. The point really, is that you can skip the manual rooting and just reload the stock rom after the s-off steps. It may be beneficial for some people to know that.
Sometimes I just like to do things from scratch myself. If there was a simple s-off process that reloaded a stock rom, I would think some people would be interested in it. Of course, I realize there is a stock rom with simply root and s-off. In my situation, that rom did not have a working GPS for some reason.
I am sure there will be a point where the whole process gets easier anyway. I believe, at some point, somebody will find a way to get s-off without downgrading first.
I was trying to create my gold card tonight but kept getting card is already being used error after formatting and placing the SD card in my phone. That's what happens when I try to get the CID for the card that is. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

HI, guys you've really helped me with all my previous phones. I currently have an Att inspire, it's not rooted but I want to have access to install apk's on my phone everything else is okay. I know about sideloadwonder but, direct downloads and installs on the phone are even better. Does SuperOneClickv1.7-ShortFuse enable non-market apps. thanks.

[Q] question about bubby's guide

Is the second post that has the download for bubby's program the one i need to get if i am trying to root? I do have the new gingerbread official leak installed, but i decided it wasnt fast enough so decided to root.

If not, do i need to use another tool, and where can i find it?
Please and thanks! (i would've posted this in the above thread, but im still under 10 posts so cant post in the development forum)
I used it to root. His program runs you through everything, including the gold card stuff. Once you're finished, just flash whatever you want.
kk, well i just downloaded it just to see if my antivirus would quarantine rage like people said it would (i use avast internet security), but i checked the virus chest and all it has in it is some stuff from awhile back. Does this mean rage didnt get quarantined, or did avast just not even let me see the rage quarantine?

Wait, you have the AT&T (Cingular 2.47.502.7) GB ROM Installed as-is stock on a non-rooted Inspire? If so, then currently no rooting methods will work for you. You'll need to do it by hand with fre3vo instead of rage or psneuter.
ah kk, thank you. From what i have read Fr3vo is only a temp root, is that true? cause im going for full root so i can get a kingdom rom (it seems the fastest from what ive seen, and it has sense 3.0, which is a + for me)

[Q] Root for apps, not new ROM

Hi folks,
I have read a number of guides and threads on the forum but I can't work out if any apply to what I want to do. I'm sure the info may be there but its not clear to me.
Basically I want root on my Desire S so that I can use aps like LUKS Manager, Orbot and so on. I don't want to install a new ROM as I'm happy with my what I have at the moment.
My hboot is 2.00.0002 and my Radio is 3822.10.08.04_M
Is what I want to do possible? If not and I have to install a new ROM is it possible to find one that matches what I have at the moment? How do I identitfy what that is?
Thanks in advance for all the help!

everything is possible. Just follow the guides in this forum how to root your device (I recommend not to use htcdev). You don't have to install a new ROM.
But my personal opinion is to use a custom ROM, since they often have much more possibilities for customizing and a lot modifications for speed and performance. Are you still using stock ROM with sense 3.0 ?

Yes, it's stock right now.
At first you need to s-off your device (caution, you are about to void your warranty). You can do that using the revolutionary tool. Then you have to root, which can be done with superoneclick.
(edit: at this point you need to install a recovery like 4ext or cwm)
Root will not be undone when installing a
New ROM, neither do you need to install a new ROM. But I recommend to use a ROM with sense 3.5, it's much better.
You can find tutorials for everything I'm talking about right here in the forums.

You need to install a custom recovery like 4ext or cwm. It's for backing up your system and flashing roms and updates and anything else you need

Ok, so if I get s-off and then keep root by using superoneclick does that mean that I won't be able to receive updates through my network?

If your s-off and rooted the installer will not install the update (never tried cause I dont use stock rom) - but there are alway newest rooted stock roms here on xda and you can update your system manually. Most of the time before your carrier sends you the "official" update.
But yes, you have to do it by yourself.

But I think if you s-off and root and DO NOT install any other ROM you might still be able to download official updates for your stock ROM over the air

Yes, you can use OTA (Over The Air update) ... but I think after that, you will loose your root
look at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1186401 FAQ's No. 5
ok, went to have a go at this but it looks like getting S-Off is quite complicated as well. I'm on HBOOT 2.00.0002.
Is there a shorter route to achieving root than:
downgrade
s-off
superoneclick (for root)
install custom recovery
If there isn't now is it likely to become available in the future or is the Desire S just difficult to do this with?
If You don't want to change rom, then stay s-on, unlock bootloader with htcdev and use superoneclick.

this will give you exaclty what you require
AND if you have S-OFF and apply an OTA you will stuck in a bootloop (white HTC splash screen)

I get that the steps might be easy enough, but there are quite a lot of them and instructions can contain loops when put together (I.e. downgrading to get root may require root in some instructionals). I do appreciate your help and advice though. I may well switch ROMs, especially in the future (I can't see myself affording a new phone any time soon!)

Thanks for the tip!
ok i am late but i think i can help.
first of all stop confusing the damn guy with different kinds of stuff. even i was like him before rooting my precious desire s. he will learn the advantages and disadvantages of revolutionary s-off as time passes by.
for now follow this guide as i did this (and trust me i had the same intentions as you do)
first get your adb and fastboot setup, this is the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1272595
then go to htcdev and unlock your phone. follow the process, its easier than you think.
after your done, download superoneclick and root your phone. if you dont know much about superoneclick then search around or google it and you will find your anwsers. one more thing, htcdev will reset your phone.
sorry if i am late if you have already rooteed your phone.
@up wth are U talkin' bout dude?
Case was closed two days ago, op was informed, understood, even thanked everyone. What are You trying to show in here?

Who do you think you are? Batman?
You've basically danced around the same bush that bronx, eyahl and amidabuddha planted already and announced salvation to the world!
Ohhh.... am I too late to save the day?...is it too late for the poor non-rooted buggers?!! What'll the world do without me? The ship you're trying to board sailed away two days ago... party's over man... but it's fascinating to see the way you look at yourself! Knight in shining armor indeed!!
This is your first post on the forum, and this is how you behave, and talk to other members...? You reap what you sow man...
P.S. : Even the OP has more posts than you!!
Lmao
I guess I'm not the only one who is killing time watching these boards 50 times a day.
