[Q] Root for apps, not new ROM - HTC Desire S

Hi folks,
I have read a number of guides and threads on the forum but I can't work out if any apply to what I want to do. I'm sure the info may be there but its not clear to me.
Basically I want root on my Desire S so that I can use aps like LUKS Manager, Orbot and so on. I don't want to install a new ROM as I'm happy with my what I have at the moment.
My hboot is 2.00.0002 and my Radio is 3822.10.08.04_M
Is what I want to do possible? If not and I have to install a new ROM is it possible to find one that matches what I have at the moment? How do I identitfy what that is?
Thanks in advance for all the help!

everything is possible. Just follow the guides in this forum how to root your device (I recommend not to use htcdev). You don't have to install a new ROM.
But my personal opinion is to use a custom ROM, since they often have much more possibilities for customizing and a lot modifications for speed and performance. Are you still using stock ROM with sense 3.0 ?
Sent from my Desire S using XDA App

Hi, thanks for the reply. I've only accepted the updates provded by my network so I guess thats the stock ROM?
Yep, its HTC Sense 3
I must be missing something basic because from all the guides i've read you have to install a new ROm to keep root?

Yes, it's stock right now.
At first you need to s-off your device (caution, you are about to void your warranty). You can do that using the revolutionary tool. Then you have to root, which can be done with superoneclick.
(edit: at this point you need to install a recovery like 4ext or cwm)
Root will not be undone when installing a
New ROM, neither do you need to install a new ROM. But I recommend to use a ROM with sense 3.5, it's much better.
You can find tutorials for everything I'm talking about right here in the forums.
Sent from my Desire S using XDA App

Ah, thats great, thanks. I didn't get that superoneclick could allow you to keep root.
Much appreciated.
I'll also look into the Sense 3.5. thanks again!

I forgot to mention: after rooting,
You need to install a custom recovery like 4ext or cwm. It's for backing up your system and flashing roms and updates and anything else you need
Sent from my Desire S using XDA App

Ok, so if I get s-off and then keep root by using superoneclick does that mean that I won't be able to receive updates through my network?

If your s-off and rooted the installer will not install the update (never tried cause I dont use stock rom) - but there are alway newest rooted stock roms here on xda and you can update your system manually. Most of the time before your carrier sends you the "official" update.
But yes, you have to do it by yourself.

But I think if you s-off and root and DO NOT install any other ROM you might still be able to download official updates for your stock ROM over the air
Sent from my Desire S using XDA App

Yes, you can use OTA (Over The Air update) ... but I think after that, you will loose your root
look at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1186401 FAQ's No. 5

ok, went to have a go at this but it looks like getting S-Off is quite complicated as well. I'm on HBOOT 2.00.0002.
Is there a shorter route to achieving root than:
downgrade
s-off
superoneclick (for root)
install custom recovery
If there isn't now is it likely to become available in the future or is the Desire S just difficult to do this with?

If You don't want to change rom, then stay s-on, unlock bootloader with htcdev and use superoneclick.

this will give you exaclty what you require
AND if you have S-OFF and apply an OTA you will stuck in a bootloop (white HTC splash screen)

I get that the steps might be easy enough, but there are quite a lot of them and instructions can contain loops when put together (I.e. downgrading to get root may require root in some instructionals). I do appreciate your help and advice though. I may well switch ROMs, especially in the future (I can't see myself affording a new phone any time soon!)

ok i am late but i think i can help.
first of all stop confusing the damn guy with different kinds of stuff. even i was like him before rooting my precious desire s. he will learn the advantages and disadvantages of revolutionary s-off as time passes by.
for now follow this guide as i did this (and trust me i had the same intentions as you do)
first get your adb and fastboot setup, this is the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1272595
then go to htcdev and unlock your phone. follow the process, its easier than you think.
after your done, download superoneclick and root your phone. if you dont know much about superoneclick then search around or google it and you will find your anwsers. one more thing, htcdev will reset your phone.
sorry if i am late if you have already rooteed your phone.

[Q] I Unlocked Bootloader Using Official HTC Tool - Now What?

Ok so I unlocked with the Official HTC Bootloader unlock tool. I have been trying to find the answer to my question of what else needs to be done before I can Rom the thing. I have been reading and everyone just seems to be arguing whether or not you need S-OFF in order to put a rom on the phone.
So please... Someone give me a straight answer. What else Do i need to do before I can load a custom rom on the phone. I went through tall of the official unlock stuff and its unlocked. Now what?!?!
First you need CWM. Then just flash the zip of your ROM
Swyped from my HTC Sensation
Thanks man for the response. Thats what i thought needed to happen but wasnt sure. Off to rom I go!
Still having trouble
Well i went to the dev section and tried to follow the steps to installing CWM and I'm getting an error. Im thinking I might need to do the HBOOT steps too. Im going to try that next. I just dont want to break my 3 day old phone.... ya know.
You can't install CWM or any other ROM if you enabled s-off with the HTC dev tool. You can only do it if you use revolutionary.

With the Sensation this is no reason not to use revolutionary and get true S-OFF.
But if you want to continue down the HTC Unlocked path, you may want to visit the Evo 3G forum. There are some excellent threads and discussion on how to get into ClockworkMod using the HBOOT method. For some of the folks over in Evo 3G land, the latest HBOOT that was released for their HTC Unlock OTA has rendered Revolutionary useless because it disabled the root exploit, so they have no choice.
But if I were you, go with Revolutionary for permanent S-OFF/Nand unlock.

Anyway to s off apart from xtc clip

My gf has this pile of junk and i wanna root it but can't find anything apart from get an xtc clip. Is there another way to do it yet . I see alpharev also has nothing also

No, there's no way to get S-OFF apart from using a XTC Clip.
What you can get is a temp root while S-ON, but without write permission in system directories.
I'm not sure about this (someone can correct me if I'm wrong), but I believe you can't even flash OTA Factory ROMs without S-OFFing this phone.
It is what it is, if you want a high end android look elsewhere- if you want a keyboard there ain't many options.
It could be better I agree- but junk?

curious. i'll try this when I go home tonight.
since I'm in Brazil, I had to unlock my phone... paid 10 USD for it. it's just a code, there are a lot of websites which generate them automagically if you send your ChaCha's IMEI and 10 bucks.

actually, I'm trying to understand what S-ON users can do... I already know that it's impossible to install OTA ROMs, but it's possible to temproot if you have a specific ROM version.
well, I think I've read so many posts and threads that I'm already confusing the information on my head.

Truly, you are confused
S-ON users have little power of their mobile device.. They cannot install a custom recovery, a custom rom, a different area/language rom (for example, I cannot install Asia rom on my Europe ChaCha since the CIDs are different) and so on. Yet I find it hard to believe that flashing CWM over the S-ON HBOOT will give you S-OFF. The engineering S-ON is a security flag set for bootloader protection.
If anyone wants to try this, feel free to do it but don't get your hopes up and don't be mad if it won't work. As you can see in the link, on the last page, they have a screenshot with a so called S-OFF'ed device, yet HBOOT is still S-ON. So there is no proof of it.

Removing stock apps

Hi,
I was wondering how to remove the apps that come with the phone on vodafone as i recently changed to 3 or can i flash the 3 ruu to my phone? Thanks
Sent from my HTC Desire S using XDA App
You could flash the Sense 3.0 ROM before the Vodafone upgrade
You may need to create a GoldCard to be able to flash it (if you have a different CID).
But in order to remove any stock apps, you have to be S-Off or HTCdev unlock your phone and either get root on your phone or install a custom pre-rooted ROM.
I want to get rid of the vodafone ones and install the 3 ones how do i do this?

You need to install another HTC RUU (e.g. the European) and you'll be fine.
Is your DS also SIM locked? If yes, you may need to unlock it afterwards.

So can i install the 3 ruu on my phone? If i download it and install it and what is a goldcard?
Sent from my HTC Desire S using XDA App
See this post here on how to create a goldcard. The goldgard is needed in order to bypass the CID check of the official RUU (or to "fool" the CID check). And then you'll be able to run the RUU you want

deadphone..... Really?
Do you know why nobody's answering your questions? Because they indicate that you haven't done any reading whatsoever, and you're too eager to jump into stuff you haven't the slightest clue about. I suggest you read up about android in general, how stuff works on this device in particular, read about bricks that have been made off perfectly good phones because of reckless flashing and following the advice of other novices, who have no idea what they're suggesting... And when you think you're done reading, and know everything there is to know,..... read some more!
I only say this because you and your very helpful "guide" friend here are dillydallying with things like RUU, goldcard, CID hacks, etc.... which is more advanced stuff than you're equipped to handle currently, and this thread looks like a disaster waiting to happen.
Do you know what trouble an incompatible RUU can get you into, if you don't use it correctly? Just S-off your phone and flash a custom ROM man... there are so many stock, pre-rooted ROMs available!
Wait. Patience. Read. Tutorials. Guides. Those are what you should be looking for...........not RUU, Goldcard, CID, Misc_version. You're not there yet.

If you haven't figured it out even now...go ahead, make a Goldcard, and flash a 3 RUU on a Vodafone branded phone. See where that gets you. Do you think CID is the only thing an RUU checks when upgrading a ROM?
I'm sorry if I offended you... maybe you could try out what you just suggested to that guy on your own phone and educate me... I seem to have gotten my concepts wrong.

Have to agree with you there, this RUU thing is very dangerous if not handled properly. I've already had an issue flashing the wron RUU, which resulted in my bootloader saying *****Security Warning***** and also i became S-off! Had to take it to HTC, but fortunately they didn't make an issue, and replaced my phone. Have stayed away from RUUs ever since. From what i have read, just making a goldcard is not enough... you need to change Misc_version too, or something like that.

You never provided any details about your phone... I didn't know you were still s-on!! Why didn't you mention that anywhere?
i didn't think it would be relevant at the time, now i know this next time i start a new topic i will include details about my phone. Anyway, the details for my phone are:
hboot 2.00.0002 s-off unlocked with htcdev so what can i do now?
I dont know anything about s-off because i dont have a htc but i do know when you are rooted you can use es file explorer or root explorer to delete apps.In es settings set system as read/write and then navigate to /system/app and delete any apk you want but dont get carried away because you can mess your phone up.Just delete the pre-installed apps you dont want.

First of all I thought that this is a community where everyone in here is supposed to help each other and not to start flaming or using irony to say to someone that he may be wrong.
We weren't all born to be experts or geniuses like you may be so you could be just a little bit polite when saying to someone that "hey you are wrong because from my experience you need to do this or that".
I'm new in the Android platform since I've been an android user for only 1,5 year but I believe I managed to play a bit with it, since for the last 7 months I'm constantly "messing" with my old devices.
And no I didn't get offended, I just don't like to see great communities, as XDA, lose their good name / status.
No hard feelings though.
The S-OFF or HTCdev unlock, flashing a custom recovery and installing a custom ROM may be the "easiest" way to do it, but what if the user didn't want to have a custom rom?
As for me trying the suggested method on my DS, well that's what I did in November to my DS, before I decided to go with a custom rom in January.
My DS, even though I got it from a Greek mobile operator (COTE), it was branded (with CID: T-MOBN14) but without any 3rd party apps. Other friends in Greece with DS have a CID: HTC__001 or another that I don't remember it atm but it stands for HTC_ELL (Greece).
After reading the 6th post of this thread, I simply did what you can see on the posts #286 & 288 in this thread.
I don't know if I got lucky or not but my DS worked flawlessly until the 1st week of January when I decided to unlock it using HTCdev, flash 4ext recovery and install CoreDroid.
Based on what I did, I suggested to deadphone99 to go with the Goldcard solution.
Anyway, I'm sorry if I just got lucky and my suggestion may caused deadphone99 to get a dead phone

They're the same phone. I recommend you read the guide. Root, S-Off and Unlock are all explained in great detail in the guide.
There have to be other small differences too, no? Screens or something, right?
First thing OP needs to do is check the build version. That will determine if you can run the aahk straight or if you need to unlock with htcdev first, flash insecure boot, downgrade, then root...

The Hack Kit can always be used, he has to find what kinda preparation needs to be done for it to work.
Desire HD and Inspire and similar, DHD is the European version, and therefore the different frequencies, the rest are just the same. Even radios can be shared.

Post 7 has a PDF guide. That includes any instructions you want. And no, you can't run AAHK on an unlocked bootloader.
how do i know if my device was shipped with gingerbread? i got this thing from my uncle and im sure he wouldnt know when he got it.

AAHK was retired a few days ago. The only option now is bootloader unlock, unless someone else comes up with a similar tool.
What do you mean AAHK is retired? is it not supported anymore? am i not able to root and flash a custom rom on my phone now?

It's neither available nor supported; the server hosting all the files it needs is no longer up. Like I said, the only option to root now is boot loader unlock.

Root and S-OFF are different things. Root means that you have administrator permissions at the rom level, so you can set different permissions in the rom. But, you can not flash all kinda stuff such as radios.
Unlocking the bootloader will allow you to flash CWM recovery and custom roms, but again not radios or boot images in recovery (you have to do it manually). As long as there is no other tool to gain S-OFF, unlocking the bootloader is the best choice.

I obtained AAHK literally the day before he retired it. I read everything thoroughly and it went off great with no problems. I think I might have been one of the last people to get S-OFF on this phone before he retired it. The only thing I can tell you is you might be able to google for ace advanced hack kit. I know you can find the blog this way, and you may be able to find the kit somewhere else to download. If you do happen to find the download somewhere, read EVERYTHING on the blog. If you read for comprehension and follow directions carefully, you can root and s-off without bricking. I did it first try no problems. Now I'm running Energy ROM for Sense 3.5 and love it.

I do not recommend trying to download AAHK and run it. You will probably get stuck in the middle. AAHK downloaded files from its servers during the process. That server is now down.

Now, you need to unlock the bootloader with HTCDEV, flash a recovery like CWM, and either: flash a rooted ROM, or a su binary and a superuser app.
In the past when AAHK was around it was a much better option (gave S-Off) than bootloader unlock, which is probably why you see people saying not to use bootloader unlock. Now that AAHK is gone, unless/until glevitan makes his S-Off tool, bootloader unlock is the only option.

In post #7 of the thread linked in my signature, glevitan has a beginner's guide that includes instructions on bootloader unlock and root. There are also many threads strewn around the HTC Desire HD forums detailing how to do it step by step. (Note: DHD is essentially the same phone as the Inspire 4G; you can use their ROMs and their instructions, though I would be careful about their radios.)

Glacier Troubles

Hello, I'm a bit new here so pardon me if this is in the wrong place.
About three weeks ago I've acquired a Glacier to replace an old Sidekick 4G. I've been trying to install custom ROMs for a while now, but they've all ended in failure. I've gone through several upon several post from various sites, most of them here in XDA. Ive done everything I've seen to get this phone a custom ROM. I've made a goldcard to downgrade which failed, I've installed CWM version 5.something, I've got permaroot on my device and I've unlocked the bootloader through HTCdevs' site. I cannot get a custom ROM to install without the package being signed, and even if I install a signed ROM, my device bricks and refuses to load past initial bootscreen. I've even left my device on entire night after flashing a signed ROM to see if it would load past the bootscreen, but it won't. I'm also still a bit new to the custom tom community as a whole, as the o ly device I've had experience customizing and flashing was the SK4G.
Can anyone here please help me? I've gone through almost every single thread on XDA regarding this phone and achieving S=Off, but nothing has worked. I honestly don't even know how I managed permaroot on here since it seems to.be difficult to do from what I've read.

I think if you unlocked your bootloader (s-off) with HTC dev you have to flash the boot.img separately. The boot.img
Is the kernel. Don't worry bro I'm a noob too can I still remember how frustrated I was while rooting. Expecially cause I have the bad emmc and I have the Canadian version of the mytouch which you have to root a different way
What rom do you want? If you open the open there will be the boot.img and extract it and flash it separately

HI There,
I too had a few hiccups when trying to load custom Roms. I also tried to use the Unlocker through HTC, and it didn't work. It says it unlocks the BOOTLOADER, but I still had S-ON. The only way I could permanently root the Glacier with S-OFF was to downgrade to 2.2 then root.
When you go into Bootloader, does it show you have S-OFF?

I was looking at this rom, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1383629 , it was the first I've tried. My bootloader is still S=On, but the bootloader itself is unlocked. I dunno if that makes any sense, I'm just reading what I see on my bootloader screen.
Anyway, after flashing the boot.img for the rom I wanted, my phone fully booted up and is now working. Thank you very much for you help.

No, and the threads I've read about downgrading to 2.2 through a goldcard hasn't worked. Would getting a stock 2.2 rom for it and flashing that work?

I don't believe so. You would still need S-OFF to flash that custom ROM anyhow.
This was the only video I found that was helpful. A lot of people complain about visionary bricking devices so I guess that's the inherent risk here, but I am still going strong. You must be on 2.2 to use the /gfree method as described in the video. Also, you will have to scour the web for the visionary APK and gfree files. I can't remember where I got them.
Downgrade using the first link, then root using the second. Do a factory reset and follow the steps to downgrade on unlockr EXACTLY and you will be fine. I know it's two different guides, but I had to piece these steps together pulling bits from each to get it to work. Be careful though, as always you take responsibility if you damage your phone using any method to root.
If you run into a misc_version permission denied error during this step, it's because you pushed the whole MISC folder and need to use:
/data/local/tmp/misc_version/misc_version -s 1.00.000.0
http://theunlockr.com/2011/10/25/ho...ire-z-desire-hd-and-mytouch-4g-back-to-froyo/
http://forum.cyanogenmod.org/topic/32293-mytouch-4g-rooting-234-ota-roam/
After that, read the GUIDE TO PERMANENT ROOT S-OFF here on XDA and piece together what you are missing.
That's the best I can do without being there with you. I am sorry.

My bootloader still says S=On, but I just got finished flashing CM7 onto my device. So I think I'm pretty much done with this thread. Thank you for all of your help.
My only other concern would be if it's possible for me to restore the /data portion of my stock rom NANDroid backup to get all of my app data back. Would that work, or would the device brick because they're two diffrent OS's?
Thats HTC Dev for you. You gotta flash the kernel after the ROM. If you have S-ON, but flashed a rom and got it to work, then you basically have S-Off, otherwise you couldn't have flashed a rom. Good luck in flashing other roms in the future bro.

Use titanium backup to extract the app data from the backup you made. Don't restore the data partition.
By the way, S-Off is far superior to HTC Dev unlock. You'll figure that out sooner or later.

Yeah, I realize know that S=off is better. Like I said, I'm new to the whole ROM community thing so I thought an HTCDev unlock WAS S=off.
Anyway, thank you all for your help. Much appreciated.
