Trading off Inspire 4G for Infuse - Questions - Samsung Infuse 4G

snip, thread moved to general.

I think the dev community will pick up some with the impending GB release, but I don't know if it will ever match that of the Inspire's. My girl has that phone, it is a great device. Huge fan of Virtuous Unity. But the Infuse is lighter and sleeker and the display is brilliant.
I have had no issues with GPS on my phone with certain roms, not always perfect though. Some roms are better than others when it comes to the GPS.
The filesystem that Samsung uses is RFS, don't know much about it but most custom kernels convert it to ext4 (voodoo lagfix)
We have less devs, but we are lucky in the fact that the few we have are quite good.
There are some BT issues because we use a not very well known chip I believe? But I am currently running CM7 and after being properly tweaked it runs very well.
Very happy with the Infuse and will have it for quite a while!

I dont see any question...

[Q] Nexus S upgrade over Vibrant? Advice

I am relatively new to the whole android thing but after having acquired my Vibrant, when it first came out, i have grown tired of how slow it is due to samsungs cancerous coding. This makes me even more displeased when i see how fast my brothers Nexus One is compared to my phone. So i am wondering if the Nexus S would be an upgrade to my vibrant or if it still suffers from samsungs cancer.
Thanks in advance
I went from a vibrant to a sns and its somewhat of a lateral move. Yeah sns is pure google, has ffc, flash etc....but I did like my vibrant, gf just wanted it more than me.
Sent from my Nexus S
Having owned both the nexus one and now the nexus s, the nexus s is just as quick. I believe Samsung's main issue is the filesystem (rfs if I recall correctly) they chose to use. This is not an issue with the nexus s as it uses ext4, an improvement over even the nexus one which was still using yaffs.

I went from a Vibrant to a Nexus S.
Nexus S pros: Gingerbread. Front camera. Near field thing. LED flash.
Vibrant pros: HD video recording. Expandable SD.
Things I have discovered I never use: front camera, near field thing, LED flash.
Things I do use and wish I had: HD video recording, expandable SD.
Is Nexus S worth it just to have Gingerbread? I don't know. Gingerbread's awesome, but if you have an Android phone, you're just going to root it and hack it and apply a new launcher, anyway, so does it really matter what it ships with? Thanks to amazing devs, it seems like it's pretty much all hackable.
If the Galaxy S 4G ran stock gingerbread, it would be a perfect phone.
Don't get me wrong. The Nexus S is nice. I'll keep using it for a while. But I already have my sights on the Incredible S.

Thanks!
I must admit that besides using the Flash as a flashlight and its "cool factor" i really dont care about it nor would i use it.
And then the front camera i have considered just modding onto my existing vibrant.
The near field thing i will never use and with our amazing devs the Vibrant is bound to get Gingerbread sooner rather then latter.
BUT the thing i really care about is its system speed and if it has, as our devs put it, "samsungs cancer code" in it, because after all the shiny new addons the OS speed is really my determining factor.
Who know, maybe just switching off Launcher pro will alleviate my lag.

it does.. the kernels have to be open-sourced to expand development
kernels most likely get open-sourced after the OTA has been released.
and we all know how OTAs go for manufacturers

Hadn't known that. I'm new to Mods and such.
I will note, I rooted my Vibrant and applied the lagfix and etc., and then it was fine. Before that, it sucked.
And I admit, I honestly don't even know what a kernel is. I just put cyanogen mod on my Nexus, and I don't see much difference between it and stock. All of which I mention for perspective on my comments.
The Galaxy S4G might be more worthwhile than the Vibrant. At least the GS4G runs froyo, right?

CyanogenMod is using the stock kernel.. lol, if you want to see the differences of kernels. Try out Netarchy's 1.2.4 or Trinity, I personally use Netarchy. I dislike morfic's boot screens added ontop.
Voodoo sound and Voodoo color are amazing (they're features in kernels) you need the app to control them as well.
Vibrant & Galaxy 4G both run Froyo. Vibrant has official 4G + source released for it now, but it took way too long imo.
If ur gonna try netarchy, make sure its CM7 compatiable (it says it on download link). CFS or BFS, either shouldn't disappoint.

x2. the only thing i truly miss from the vibrant was the extra storage space. i had 14gigs of internal space and i also added another class 4 32 gb external sd card. i know some people don't use a lot of space but i do (movies and music and a ton of nandroid backups).
I just switched 2 days ago and so far I'm really happy. I sold my Vibrant to a friend and was able to get a Nexus for a price that didn't hurt too bad.
I have to admit that I was hesitant at first. I dislike how Samsung has handled the SGS line and was loathe to reward them by purchasing another one of their products. But after playing with the Nexus for a while I caved. Its the phone I wish the Vibrant had been on the first place. No RFS, no TouchWiz......Never going back to a non-stock Android phone again.
Performance wise it feels noticeably faster than the Vibrant. The build quality is better too. My Vibrant used to creak a little, but not this. I have made a few video calls and though I probably wont use it often it is nice to have the option. I love having a camera flash; I'm often out with friends at night. NFC should take off this year but right now I can't really say anything about it.
Mostly I bought it because the other phones ive seen coming out this year don't impress me too much. Dual core is awesome but until the software support is there it isn't going to do much. Guaranteed updates and CM support are great also. The 4 inch SAMOLED screen hits the sweet spot in my book as well.
Just remember, either way you'll have a nice phone. I enjoyed my Vibrant but at the end it just wasn't what I had hoped for. Good luck.

Only thing I miss is video codecs. 720p playback lags on RockPlayer
RockPlayer handles everything else pretty well.
Overall, my opinion is that Nexus S > Vibrant. Wish it had SD though, not a deal breaker for me though.
Was just sick of the lack of CM7 support for SGS and constantly using lagfixes and unapplying them to flahs a new ROM.

P.S. don't call the Nexus S a SNS. Its NS. They didnt call the 'Nexus One' HN1/HNO (HTC Nexus One).
You should wait for the HTC Pyramid. It will be out in first half this year and it is going blow both away.

Pyramid doesn't features Tegra 2. With a phone using tetra 2, you'll have access go tegra 2 zone.
Plus, its rumored that quad core phones will come out at the end of this year or early next.

I agree with the lateral move. I like the hardware on the NS better than the Vibrant as I'm not into hardware modifications. I do prefer touchwiz apps to stock Google apps. I also prefer video codecs and 720p video recording over not having them either.
What I can tell you is that in terms of speed there are only a few things where I've noticed the Nexus is actually faster at, a quadrant benchmark because of jit, and usb connection speed. Side by side the tasks are almost identical, so much so that I can't tell the difference. My Nexus is running CM7 RC build #2 overclocked to 1.2Ghz and my Vibrant is running Bionix-V 1.2.1 with no overclock.
I have the luxury of being able to use either one whenever I want, so if I know I'm going to take a video I'm taking the Vibrant, and if I'm going on a trip and want to watch some movies on a plane ride I'm taking the Vibrant...every day use the Nexus is fine but it isn't an upgrade by any means.
In the end it's your choice so make sure if you do make the choice to change phones that you can live with it at least until someone makes some nice software modifications.

If leaked specs are correct, this phone should be a killer......
ps. as i said this many times before....Team Wiskey Vibrant > SNS > stock Vibrant
Vibrant has much more then just HD playback and HD recording.....3.0 Bluetooth, TV-out, Gorilla Glass, SD-slot, many extra/cool features of Touchwiz (music player, all-share, camera, better sms and email clients), support for car and home docks, etc....i am probably missing something. And with TW ROM you cant even tell it apart from SNS running Gingerbread...

Lots of biased statements there. Coming from a Guy who is from team whiskey.
You can paint something to look like something else but it's still Froyo. Not to mention the vibrant is using RFS filesystem that requires lagfixes.
With the Nexus S, Google releases source for kernels almost immediately which is a huge plus for Nexus S development. Whereas the vibrant kernels are based off I9000 kernels which result in poor battery life.
Waiting for Samsung to release source is mindblogging and I'm sure a lot of people who went from a vibrant to a nexus s would agree with me.
Basing roms off otas < basing roms off AOSP source.

If video playback of anything you can throw at it is important, or large amounts of removable sdcard storage, or even 720p recording, then the Vibrant is the clear choice. There are a significant number of media-related activities the Nexus S can't do, that the Vibrant can.
If a more solid build, with a sexier to look at and easier to hold in the hand shape, with the alleged promise of getting newer versions of Android first are important, then the Nexus S is the choice.
OP - you can easily vastly improve the Vibrant's performance with any of the custom ROMs are kernels that implement the voodoo hacks.
I've called the move from any of the existing Galaxy S variants to the Nexus S a "side-grade", it's definitely not a major "upgrade" unless you'll never run root or custom kernels (to fix the infamous "lag" of Samsung's RFS filesystem).

I am not a dev, but i am pretty positive that Vibrant with TW uses VIBRANT kernel, not i9000.....shouldn't you know this being from Team Wiskey ?
dont have poor battery life......after several cycles with new ROM, I am back to my usual which is 12-14 hours of use. RFS doesn't bother me anymore thanks to Voodoo. And as far as 2.3 vs 2.2 goes......its just a minor upgrade, not as big as 2.1 to 2.2.
at this point SNS is history already......its very clear that the phone was released to make quick cash....not much longer wait for S-II, LG 2X, and Pyramid....
development-wise points go to SNS......

Vibrant source was released days ago and there are already three OC kernels out built from source.
I would say if you want to break it down, the NS is better as a pure phone/smartphone, whereas the SGS is a better media device. I would not sell my Vibrant because it's like an Android-based iPod Touch (but better).

[Q] Most recommended phone in terms of ROM support?

I'm currently on a N1 and previously had a Hero (GSM) and I love the love that these two phones have gotten from the devs
Just quite curious with regards to the current phones though, which are the ones that are just as similarly loved by the developers in terms of a wide range of 3rd party roms?
I'm incredibly happy with my vibrant. I had the g1 for like 2 years, and the development was awesome. Then I went to the Mytouch slide and the devving on that sucked ass. That was pretty much a year of cyanogenmod. Now I'm on the Vibrant and this phone is a beast. I don't see the hummingbird chirp getting outdated anytime soon. The only complains I have about the Development is that the roms are very similar, but they're awesome. I used to be a daily flasher coming from the g1, and I was at first with the vibrant, but after flashing Bi-winning V3.0 I have no desire to flash something else. I get approx 2100's Oc'ed to 1.2 ghz, and my battery lasts easily 15 hrs with use
I actually think the desire and desire HD. In the future i guess that will be de sensation

Disgruntled Sensation owner

I have an htc sensation and am extremely unhappy with the software support it has gotten. Not putting any blame on the devs, they have been great to us but the fact of the matter is that we are still on cm7 alphas, not even nightlies, and ics support is looking pretty bad. Kmobs has made some progress, so I'm going to wait a while to see what he has to offer along with whatever else the cm team gives us. And that's ignoring the hardware issues like poor reception and a shoddy screen (Ghosting and scan lines on an lcd made in 2011? seriously? That's ignoring the fact that my a** produces deeper blacks than this thing. I know it's an lcd, but come on! I swear to god I'm never buying an htc phone ever again).
Assuming that doesn't end well, would you guys recommend I "downgrade" to a nexus s? I wouldn't be able to afford a galaxy nexus (whenever the hell that launches on t-mobile, no way I import one) I could sell my sensation and get a used one for a pretty good price. Or should I just tough it out with my sensation and get a galaxy nexus when its second hand price drops?
Basically, what I'm asking is do you gs owners feel compelled to upgrade to the galaxy nexus or are you still content with your devices?
I'm happy with my phone as it is. Yeah, I could get a Galaxy Nexus if I wanted to pay for it outright, but there'll be another one next year, and there's nothing wrong with my NS. I wouldn't mind a Galaxy Nexus, but for me, my phone's doing what I need it to

That's what really bothers me about the sensation, it doesn't do what I need it to do. HTC Sense is a complete mess imo, and cm7 (which is what I'm currently running) is incredibly buggy due to it still being an alpha. (the browser will crash about every tenth page you load) Thanks for the input.

your first mistake.. the nexus s is not a downgrade. not even close. just because it doesnt have a dual core cpu, doesnt mean anything. as a matter of fact, my nexus s doesnt know that it doesnt have a dual core, and im not telling it
i have a friend thats very disgruntled with his sensation also. and for pretty much the same reasons that you gave. the only thing that i can say to ease your pain is that morfic, the creator of the Trinity line of kernels(for the ns/ns4g), has just received a sensation to develop on. im hopeful that the sensation will be seeing some great kernels in not to long of a time span. so, heads up

It is a slippery slope.
the 1.35x higher resolution skews 2D and 3D benchmarks.
benchmarking sense roms with the unoptimized libsqlite implementation drops IO scores
so it stacks up quite nicely now where i can actually benchmark a sensation hands on
flashing cm7 alpha10 on sensation right now to do some further test on a more familiar platform.
user experience is great on sensation so far btw
I'd wait till the ics OTA drops for the nexus s. Right now ics roms are pretty stable but they are no where near as smooth as gingerbread roms. No one knows how well ics will transfer to single cores, so your sensation may be better for the long run because of the duel core.

For sure. It's a gorgeous phone, and I've always liked the Sense UI. I think it's the best OEM UI out there. I think once the phone gets some more attention it'll definitely be a nice piece of hardware. Honestly, if I were in the OP's position, I would probably hang on to the phone if I could... but it seems it doesn't meet his needs.

I actually disagree about the ux on sense. There are a lot of little things that really bother me. The way that the notification drawers sometimes takes a second to slide down for no apparent reason, the unlock animation, the lack of a bookmarks button in the browser (you have to hit menu), and the choppiness of the app drawer to name a few. imo, cm7 is a much more pleasant to use os, but that has been really buggy for me on my sensation. Sense is definitely a love/hate affair, and I really hate it lol. (Which is strange because I actually liked sense 2.x quite a bit, 3.0 was a step backwards imo.)

Just curious, which ROM are you running? Not sure if you're on stock or a customer Rom, but when I had my Inspire I ran Android Revolution most of the time (when I wasn't on CM) and the performance improvement over the stock ROM was amazing. I talked my friend into throwing Android Revolution HD (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1098849) on his Sensation 4G and he keeps mentioning how much faster it is now.

I'm on cm7 right now. I have tried arhd, but that gave me really bad battery life, no matter which kernel I used. I tried a few others, I think insert coin was one of them, but none really felt as snappy as cm7. Some were smoother, but multitasking and opening apps is much quicker in cm7. I'll take the buggyness of cm's current state on the sensation over sense any day.
My ns4g with aosp's ics ROM is incredible. Probably going to take a break from my EVO 3d and use it as my daily driver for a while once the OTA drops

I think you're asking a bit much there. CM for Sensation is being done by one guy. One guy with a real life and a real job and real commitments that don't involve coding an OS for a bunch of - quite frankly - ungrateful users. KMobs is an utter perfectionist, but he has good reasons as to why we don't have nightly releases for the Sensation yet (a9 is just about perfect but a10 introduced a bunch of bugs... and to be honest, I'd prefer he focused on getting CM9 alphas out the door).
The real fact of the matter is that the Android market is much broader than it has ever been. Two years ago, we were looking forward to the Droid and Nexus One as our saviours from the 528MHz MSM720x-infected designs that were around. All we really had to choose from was the HTC Dream/G1, Magic/MT3G and Hero, which all shared basically identical internal designs. Nowadays you can point at just about any brand of phones and they'll have a truly lustworthy Android handset competing for your dollars and marketshare, so therefore the developer base has splintered accordingly. It's therefore only natural that handsets will have less 3rd-party developer support as time goes on.

OK, this interests me. I haven't had these issues. In fact, my Sensation has far better reception than my two previous phones (LG Opitmus 2X and Samsung Galaxy S). I've definitely not noticed any ghosting or scanlines on my screen. Dust under the screen, yes. Power button funkiness, yes. At the risk of sounding like a Sensation/HTC apologist, I'd suggest that your phone has some kind of fault and you should get it looked at.
Basically, what I'm asking is do you gs owners feel compelled to upgrade to the galaxy nexus or are you still content with your devices?

GS Owners? Well, I assume you're addressing Sensation owners here
I'm very tempted to upgrade to a GN. I won't though, mostly for the following reasons;
Removable SD Card - GN only has internal memory, muddied by...
USB Mass Storage - GN uses MTD which is a suboptimal ux, IMO. In a nutshell it means that all the writeable media on the phone presents as a single unified area with the user accessible /sdcard/ just being a directory rather than a separate partition & device as it is otherwise. It's probably The Future, but right now I hate it.
Offscreen buttons - I hate capacitive buttons as they are, but at least they're not taking up screen real estate
Build quality - The Sensation feels glorious. Samsung devices tend to feel cheap.

Just FYI, there are 2 other guys that are working on Sensation from the CM team. Not gonna post links since I don't care if you believe me or not, but you can find them on kmobs g+ feed. They just don't post on XDA, and don't release things until the next build has enough to warrant a release. They've been saying we'd go into nightly status soon, but either there are a couple of problems that they haven't found solutions to, someone is busy with their lives, or someone got pregnant (joke).

I wouldn't mind knowing who those guys are actually; so I can follow them myself on G+.

It looks like some dumba** mod didn't read my post and moved it from the nexus s forums to the sensation forums. The point of the thread was not to complain about cm development on the sensation, I realize that it's a labor of love and that the team working on it is small, the point of the thread was to ask galaxy s owners whether they feel proper CM support and stock OTA updates are worth the downgrade in hardware.
And no, my phone is not defective, it has one of the auo screens which have been confirmed to have scanlines and poor pixel response times.
@the guy asking me why I bought an htc phone: htc phones have always been famous for having great cm support and their hardware is really nice.
I feel that my Sensation is a bit slow sometimes, but I'm trying to tell myself that it'll all be great when ICS comes out (either via HTC or CM9).

[Q] New Phone advice

so I am getting a new phone, i have en evo 4g that i love but am thinking it is time to upgrade. my choices are moto. photon 4g, galaxy sii 4g, nexus s 4g, or another evo 4g. i do not want the evo 3d or design (dont like em). i am concerned about dev support, for rooting, & custom rom's. I like the hdmi port on my evo, but it's not a deal breaker.
i'd like some thoughts from the community on their experience with these phones and why they chose it over the others.
mods sorry if this is the wrong section, this is my first post.
thanks,
Jack
Out of all of them the GS II would be the best choice. Nexus S has more development because it's a Nexus, but its behind now in it's specs. I'm sure of how popular the GS line, it should have good development and its current in it's specs.
best chooise is sgs 2
GS2
please hit the thank you button
Most definitely the SGS2... both for the average user and the avid ROM flasher.
It is the best phone I have ever gotten right out of the box. I'm just stubborn lol
Nexus. Cause tw really isn't my thing.
-My life is a shooting range, people never change-
I bought the SGS II (Epic Touch) on release day and I've had a blast with this thing. the specs are top notch and we're getting more developers by the day. Got the CM team working on a port (or so I've heard) and people working on ICS and MIUI (if that's your thing).
Got no-touchwiz roms too for those who don't like it.
And since the EL12 update got leaked, no more Loss of Signal bug and no more Game Crash bug either.
I was considering switching from it to the Evo 3D or Photon for awhile, but now that the problems are fixed (much faster than we all expected over there), I've got no reason to.
SGS II FTW
Well I went with the SGSII: E4GT (that is one long #@$&'ing name). I am loving it. Got it rooted, first went with tnz Blend ROM, very nice smooth ROM. I didnt think it could get better, then I found Phantom Hacker's Blazer ROM. I'm on v4.0, odexed, with the stock EL29 kennel, running the FB15 modem and its great so smooth and fast. Going to flash the Gunslinger v1.4.1 kennel next.
Being new to this phone and flashing, I learned something that someone may find helpful as its not always talked about. I don't know if it is ROM specific, but when you do a full wipe, an easier way to restore your data is to go into CWM recovery, restore, advanced options, and restore your data from your nandroid back up. It works allot better for me than TB, at least with Blazer v4..0.
A always do your research before doing anything. This XDA community has been great!

Would you guys recommend the G2X now? (Vibrant Owner)

I'm currently on the ICS AOKP ROM for my Vibrant and I love mostly everything on it. Voodoo really makes it my go-to device for music because it sounds good and it sounds loud because of Wolfson DACs (one main reason why I'm considering the G2X: either that or the Galaxy S3, but I'm not sure the US is even going to get the Wolfson DAC). However, I've read issues with forced reboots and still hammering out the ICS stuff. I'm mainly interested in the G2X because I've read that the GPS works as great as Motorola's and HTC's. Basically: I want a phone that's as good as my Vibrant, but also has working GPS, as well as LED flash. Things like screen-type and weight isn't an issue.
To have good GPS you need to be on the latest baseband. There are only two custom roms that support it and they're both practically identical (one is based off the other, and the other is just a slightly modified version of stock).
That said I would choose my g2x over a vibrant any day. And if my ebaying is correct, the vibrant actually sells for more than the g2x, so you could possibly upgrade and make some money off of it.
Vibrant has official CM9 builds, G2x doesn't Stay with Vibrant or go for a SGS2.
being as i have owned the vibrant and now own a G2x, id say its a pretty safe jump. the internal storage is about half of the size of the vibrant but the dual core processor in the g2x rocks. I live in a pretty sprawling urban area and i need my GPS, so i stick with the latest baseband and GPS (and everything else for that matter) works perfectly. plus you get an 8mp camera over the 5mp cam on the vibrant and the front facing camera is always fun too =]
hope my 2 cents helped!

Exactly what I was going to write (mius the GPS stuff, mine still takes a bit to lock, but thats due to the rom I use) I just came from the Vibrant to this and couldn't be happier.
I wouldn't consider a switch to a G2X to be a worthwhile upgrade from most phones. I don't know the vibrant, but I have to think that you can do better than a G2X. There's little hope now of an official ICS ROM, unless T-Mobile announced something recently and I missed it. It's also taken a year for them to get their act together and provide a ROM with working GPS.
It's a dead-end phone, with other phones out there now that have ICS support, and newer phones coming all the time, why move to this POS? I own one, and I regret it. When the SGIII is available on T-Mobile if they won't work me a deal on an upgrade to that, I'll pay whatever I have to to terminate my contract and move to another provider. I feel really burned by the G2X and am very disappointed with the way LG and T-Mobile haven't supported it.

I don't think people here understand that this phone has some amazing development. Sure, some of HTC's phones and the nexus phones all have better support, but have you seen the development for the rest of android phones? Most phones you're lucky to have a couple ROMs to try out (and a lot of times they're just debloated or reskinned).
But for what it is, this phone isn't bad and the development isn't bad. And we'll get ICS working once the P990 gets the drivers.
Thanks guys. It looks like I'm going to be in the market for a G2X in the near-future then. From what I gathered: the main problem of the G2X is the lack of software support from Nvidia and LG themselves because they have closed-source drivers that forces devs to do workarounds which can lead to inconsistencies. However, if you can hammer it all out, it should be a good daily driver that works.
Everyone gets a "thanks".
I'll eventually get a SGS3 if it can be confirmed that it'll get Voodoo Control support on the stateside. It was a huge blow to me that the SGS2 didn't have the Yamaha chip and therefore: no Voodoo LOUDER support.

Not to hate on either device, I would like to stay as unbiased as I possible could.
Development goes to vibrant, although no one should complain about the g2x's dev. As someone said earlier, at least we have different roms, some don't have any.
GPS definately goes to g2x, never got a vibrant lock to work. I found GPS lock working better on certain roms and that is all different with every g2x so u are going to have to expirement
Gaming: I don't game on my phone a lot but when I do sometimes to test, it never lagged, accept on some ics roms and its not the devs faults. Vibrant gaming is close, just takes longer to open up apps and lags a little. That is only after I used g2x then switched to a vibrant. As for you, you would have never have knew the difference until u try both so it doesn't matter. Also g2x can play Tegra games, dunno any use if that
Camera : I never use
Screen: I know almost everyone out here likes amoled screens and I'm the only one that hates it. Personal preference basically.
Music: get an Ios device! Haha jk, I am not a heavy listener but it works for runs so that's all that matters to me. Voodoo is awesome on vibrant, never messed with it on g2x.
Battery, I have only played with bionix on vibrant so I am comparing that with bionix on g2x. I seem to have better battery life on g2x but that's because I was experimenting with kernels so Idk, what is ur best battery life and ill compare it with mine.
Drotest? Goes to vibrant the "said" to be *ahem* fake aluminium on g2x is horrible, it can't scratch from ur fingernail or even cases. Aren't cases supposed to be protecting the phone? :banghead: as for glass cracking, Idk g2x will probably crack first because it is heavier, who knows?
Now if you read my whole post, u must be desparate to find out what phone to get Also remember don't care about what other people think, its ur phone and it's up to you in the end. Leta see how many typos u get because I am in mobile

Vibrant still has intermittent 911 dialing issues on CM 9 builds. Until FaultException changes his threads to indicate otherwise or you test it, you have to assume you can't call emergency numbers. I went exactly that route - Vibrant to G2x.
Now, I'm only on the stock G2x ROM. But I'm on the audio-fixed 2.3.4 ROM (as I just got the phone yesterday, only paid $160 on eBay and it is in totally great shape). Solid as a rock and what appears to be good battery life. I used the GPS for around a 90 minutes of turn-by-turn directions and it never gave out on me.
The Vibrant was my first high-end smart phone. The G2x is my second, and it's pretty great. So it's not getting CM9 or any other ICS? Not a big deal to me; the Vibrant effectively didn't run ICS well enough for me, at least not yet. The battery life is awful on any Cyanogenmod (compared to stock) and GIngerbread on the G2x is nice nice nice. And fast.
That said, if you can swing the cash for a nicer phone, or if you have an upgrade credit coming, look at the HTC One S. If I was on post-paid and had an upgrade credit, that's where I'd be looking. I don't have $500 to blow on a phone, though, so I went a cheaper route and got a phone with great performance and a screen that won't burn in.
It's unfortunate that, due to the recent V21Y and audio updates, the G2X just became what it should have been when it was first marketed. At least it wasn't totally abandoned by LG and T-Mobile although it is now deactivated as a phone sold by T-Moble. Don't expect ICS until/if LG makes it available for the P990/O2X(non WIND model). Even then, it will take a few iterations of development to get it working well which, hopefully, will be able to happen if there are still developers working on the G2X.
Although I am extremely angry with prejudice with LG and NVIDIA, I like the G2X and I sticking with it because it now works well and I have to keep it until my 3 year non-contract-contract WINDTab+ with WIND Mobile pays for the phone which cost $500 when I got it.
Most of the newer generation of phones are not substantial or insignificant improvements, technologically, over the G2X. If you can get decent $ for your Vibrant and pay less than the $ you got for the Vibrant for a G2X, that would be a win-win for you. Even if you wind up selling the G2X later, you won't lose much if any $ as it is probably at its lowest value until LG stops selling the Optimus 2X which has updates that can be made compatible (except for the baseband) with the G2X.
