I can only assume. One thing i will point out is the GPS is horrible. Phone will freeze and reboot when using GPS unless WiFi is on. Also the GPS lock takes longer than it should and it fails to track you. But i rarely use GPS so its a fair trade off for me.
The GPS thing was a short lived bug that has since been fixed again.

Yup. Repo sync and rebuild should fix what ails ya as far as GPS.

Tsk, tsk, tsk. Here I thought better of you, but obviously, like is so prevalent around here, you clearly didn't read the OP (or more clearly, didn't bother to look at the screenshot).
It is VERY clear in his original screenshot that it states HSDPA as the network type. So no, he's not on wifi. Again, since you want to repeat it, no, he's not on a wifi network.

He attached a thumbnail to the post showing his high speeds connected to Wifi according to the logo.
Which actually means that the only thing that was true was that he was on Wifi when he took the screenshot, not when the results were ran.
Besides the telltale HSDPA as the network type, further details reveal his external IP of 166.205.x.x is owned by WDSPC (http://www.wdspc.org), or Wireless Data Service Provider Corporation, which leases their IP space to ATT, Verizon, US Cellular and other cell network providers. I think we can now agree he was on a cellular network at the time of the test, yes?
look at the times. the screenshot was taken atleast 9 and a half hours after the test. im sure he had plenty of time to turn on wifi since then before the screenshot. the results say hspa and thats convincing enough for me.
Sorry I use wifi at home. But if I was only getting 11 mbits down and one up I would have a big problem.

On-topic: do you think UCKJ2 will improve this?
I'm currently using MIUI 1.10.14. Ran infused v2 before, but like all the customization available on MIUI, and it seems faster. But I had been using the UCKJ1 modem and the speeds were alright.
I updated to UCKJ2 today, and the speeds were noticeably faster, but when I sent a text message more than 150 characters, I believe, it would say "failure" and not send. So I flashed back since I tend to send long text messages...
But the speeds definitely increased with the UCKJ2 modem

Please stop calling this UMA. It's not the same thing at all.
Wi-fi calling is a clever way to push people on to their own wifi infrastructure. Rather than continue to use cell tower bandwidth, you use your own broadband connection for both data and voice traffic. The best part (for them) is you still use your minutes.
Most people never bother setting up wifi on their phone, because they simply don't have to. The mobile network is available 24x7, and wifi eats battery life. Now, get to charge you *and* get you off their network at the same time.
Brilliant strategy, but I'll pass - I'm not paying T-Mobile to use my own bandwidth.
You would if you were somewhere you didn't have coverage. Or even better if you were out of the country and wanted to call back to a US number and only use your normal minutes and not pay for international roaming.

This is a great feature, i'm just confused why they wouldn't build it to allow it to seamlessly handoff to cell towers.
That would b a hardware requirement and raise the cost.

I used my BB overseas this summer, mobile network off, wifi on. No extra charges.
So I been having problems with my data speeds since my bill cycle started over. I can't get speeds over .04-.05mbps anywhere! when I know I get 3.5-5.5 on a good day and area. I was throttled last bill cycle but now on this bill cycle I'm still at throttled speeds. I've called tmo already 3 nights in a row to see if they still had me throttled. They say I'm not throttled, they troubleshooted so I have a trouble ticket out right now. I'm just trying to see if I can get this fix myself. Tmo is lagging on calling me back. I need my 4g speeds back.the phone is horrible withou it and its killing me.
I just want if anyone with the factory unmodified apn settings can do me the favor of posting it up so I can match it with mine. I would really appreciate it.

well changing the APn's will not adjust anything as far as speeds go. it's a connection problem between your phone and T-Mobile's servers. If you are that low and showing "h" on the not. bar then they still have you programmed as being throttled.

are you still at the same area where you used to get the much faster speeds? I've had the mt4g since January and even though I have the "H" and full bars in my city the speeds are always between .15 to .6Mbps down, while the upload is usually around 700Kbps. Got trouble tickets going and service calls until a network engineer showed up at my location to do some testing. Turns out I'm sitting about 40 feet away from the t-mo tower, but given their current configuration, those speeds are all I'm going to get until there's further tower upgrades! I can hop on the freeway and drive south for 20 minutes and find a signal that gives me speeds of 2 to 4Mbps, but too bad I don't live or work there. I was put through the tedious troubleshooting "steps" too, even went as far as visiting a t-mo store and doing side-by-side testing with my phone and two of their phones, switched sim cards twice too. All that drama just to be told that the tower is operating "normally" in its current configuration and that's all the speed I'm going to get for a long time.

Yea I'm still in the same area where I used to get great 4g speeds. Basically most of los angeles has 4g so every where I went I had great speeds. Now every where i go is crappy. The thing is my girl and I are on the same contract and have the exact same plan. Her mt4g is lighting fast as it should be where mine is super slow in the same areas as her and we live together. At first I thought it was the sim card. I did a test where I put my sim in her phone and mine on hers then hers was getting crappy speed and I was getting great speeds. So I thought it was the sim issue every one was talking bout. So I went to a tmo store and they gave me a new sim. But still that didn't fix the problem. So now I knew that it wasn't a problem with the sim nor the device. That's when I really knew the problem was at their end.

Where do you live? That obviously matters, 4g coverage keeps expanding in Chicagoland area, I get 4g almost everywhere I go.
I live in Akron, I get full 4g bars then it drops to nothing, then 1x, then 3G. its unreal
Did you enter your address in the coverage map? Don't know how big Akron 4g coverage is, but again, I rarely ever lose 4g around Chicago and the burbs.

Pretty much from Mid-County to the Lehigh Valley exit is still 3G in most areas but south towards the city and in the Lehigh Valley itself is all LTE. I travel down from Allentown to Philly regularly and I can tell you this from personal experience.
FYI Lehigh Valley LTE is down right now but I just got out of a meeting with Verizon (less than an hour ago) and they supposedly knew there was some maintenance being done in our area (so that may be the reason for the current outage.) If you switch out of LTE Mode to CDMA LTE auto you should pick up 3G (I'd also enable airplane mode and then disable it to pick up a strong 3G for right now.)
Oh and +1 on the rooted/non-rooted thing. You can flash back to non-rooted stock from a rooted state to send it back. Instructions are in the development forum.

Hi there, thanks for that info i appreciate it. I seem to be missing where htc allows us to switch btwn the 4g and 3g, i searched for the question but didn't get much results. So i'll my noob question right here. Where is that done?
I see under Settings > Wire & networks > Mobile network settings there is a System select option, for "Change the cdma roaming mode", is this where i'm supposed to be? Roaming doesn't seem to be the area i'd think to have to change this particular thing, but i don't see much else in these menus. Please advise or link a thread that i didn't see in my results.
Verizon has a problem with their new eHRPD network.. which is what the Thunderbolt is on by default.. (this allows for 4G + simultaneous talk and browse on 3G).. However, though 4G works OK, 3G doesn't seem to.
In order to tap into Verizon's original 3G network.. dial ##778# on your phone.. go to edit mode (you'll see pop up after you dial that number)..password is 000000 (6 zeros).. go to modem settings.. Rev.A and eHRPD is probably selected there by default.. choose "Enable" option... which will kick it out of eHRPD and then hit menu.. commit changes.. and the phone will reboot. You'll be on Verizon's original 3G network which will work fine.. but you won't have 4G.

A data plan is of course, always going to be a data plan. There is no difference from one plan to another AFAIK besides 2GB and 4GB or if you're grandfathered for unlimited.
Just obviously with software updates etc. to enable "4G".
I'm up here in MT and I barely touch 1.5Mbps if I'm lucky. My friend has the same issue, and AT&T keeps telling me it's because MT is a "new acquisition". BS I've had the service for almost 3 months now. Learn to put up more towers!

I saw the the thread about editing the build prop yes. I just checked att coverage maps for 4g and Sacramento is now in the coverage zone. Should now be seeing hspa+ speeds here. I'll do a test when I get home but I'm willing bet my roommates iPhone will still pull faster speeds than me. I will also get on the phone with att and find out if i need a different plan. Will report back.

Comparing the iphone to the inspire is not really fair as the iphone doesnt use the same apn settings, and they also have a reserved amount of bandwith set aside for iphones only. Not to mention they seem to go faster due to alot of things being cached on Apples servers which the iphone connects to first so it seems like they can pull data faster but it is not what it seems.
Ah, I'm not the only one pulling down slower speeds than other devices. My GF's Infuse consistently pulls down 6-7 mbps while my Inspire, at the same time and location, will pull down 3-4. My build prop is edited, and I've tried other radios (and rils) with not much luck. Is this a device capability issue?
The only thing I haven't done is mess with APNs much. I feel as though it won't change anything, but eventually I'll try that as well.

I would try that, As it can have a great impact on your connection. I could set you up with the old apn settings and you would pull edge speeds. So it only goes to reason that the APN settings might have a large thing to do with it.

I'm going to look around at the speeds others are getting. I just can't seem to get more than 3-5 mbps. I know my area is capable of it because my GF's Infuse gets 5-8 mbps consistently, and at the same time I test mine. Weird.
I'll wait for compelling results before I change mine, because I've been modding heavily the last few days and I'm exactly not in the testing mood.

I really wish this hadn't been moved to QA because no one looks in here. I am really trying to find a solution to this issue. I have been searching and can't come up with a definite answer. I need people who live in the bay to post what speeds they have been getting. I think I may need to call att.

The day after I got my Inspire, I went to an A's game. The best I got on that trip was 1.5/0.35. A week later in Sac, in the parking lot of the Kaiser on Morse Avenue, I was able to pull 5.0/0.35. The best I got at home in Woodland was 3.0/0.35. I am now rooted, running ClearDroid, and get 4-5 down with upload better than 1. I'm still on my unlimited plan.

Wait till the start of the next billing cycle and see if you get good speeds. If so, then you have your answer.

It's not likely the throttling is done at the phone, so it would make no difference if you're 100% stock or running a rooted, 3rd party ROM. They'll throttle you on the network side.

So when the Verizon rep told me they do not throttle 4G devices he was lying?
Not trying to start anything. I just want to find out if what he told me was true or not.

Umm, average Verizon Rep=not well informed. Also, salesman.....
Not to insult a store Guy but, my instore experience so far is not great at all. They may be better elsewhere but, I'm disappointed so far and they are like a brick wall.

I didn't say they do or do not throttle anything. I said if they do, they're not going to do it at the phone.

I suspect he said they don't throttle 4G connections. They may throttle a 4G device, when it's using the 3G network. You didn't give any details on when you think you were being throttled.
VZW should not be throttling any 4G connections, on bandwidth usage alone, per 47cfr27.16(c)(1):
The potential for excessive bandwidth demand alone shall not constitute grounds for denying, limiting or restricting access to the network.

But, if you've been tethering, or using bandwidth to the detriment of other users, they can.

VZW has already disputed the validity or applicability of that. No need to bring it up here if VZW doesn't care about it....

What I was told by a Verizon rep was 4G phones were exempt from throttle or network enhancements as they call it even if the 4G phone is using 3G service.
I do tether on occasion but most of my data usage is from downloading roms on my phone and watching netflix again on the phone.
I do like the thunderbolt a lot but it was the exemption that made me upgrade. My data speeds were horrible on the incredible. YouTube and netflix would buffer and sometimes not even load because of the slow speeds. HBOgo would not even work because of that.

Gotcha. As I explained in my last post I was told by the Verizon rep I would not have a problem if I upgraded to a 4G phone.
I just wanted to find out if the rep knew what he was talking about or if it was a lie to sell me a new phone and sign another 2 year contract.

Yes they can throttle.
No you can't do anything about it.

Have you checked with Verizon to see if there is network issues?
Check another phone if you can... Maybe sim or phone is bad.... Just some suggestions
In my experience, the commonly used Speedtest app reports poor speeds. It also defaults to the closest test site which isn't always the best. I'm in SW Ohio and used a site in California and gotten 25+ Mb/s. TRY OTHER SITES, especially in larger cities.
Also, try http://speakeasy.net/speedtest using same rationale as above.
Remember, if you get 30Mb/s on one test and sub-10Mb/s on all others, you're *not* throttled.

I thought I was getting throttled, but it was just my bad connection. I get 25 down and 4 up through speakeasy.net

Do you have files in a folder named 'throttle' at the following: data/system/throttle
If so, try deleting the files and remove the 'write' permission from the throttle folder. Reboot your phone, wait a few minutes and then make sure that no files were recreated in the 'throttle' folder. This helped me, but the results seem to vary from phone to phone.
You may want to try disabling Smithmicro and Verizon Backup, as there should be no need for either on a custom rom in my opinion.
I use the Liquid Nonsense rom, did a lot of research and tweaked my 'build.prop' file. While doing so, I found that the buffer sizes for LTE, Wifi, etc. are also listed in a file named 'init.rc' as well. By making sure that the buffer sizes listed in 'build.prop' matched the ones listed in 'init.rc' I have almost doubled my download and upload speeds.
I am not going to debate the pros/cons of these changes with folks, but for those willing to take the risk you may boost your connection speeds as well.
