Nah, the stock kernel has all kinds of bugs. Root + an efficient kernel is always better than stock battery life.

i just bought the nexus 4g...whats the best custom ROM?
It depends what you like.
If you want something fast and smooth, try the Oxygen Rom or Deck's Rom.
If you want a whole lot of features, try CyanogenMod7 or MIUI.
There are a lot of Rom threads in the development section.
Hope you find something you like

Peteralphonso ics nightlies run pretty damn great. Never had a problem. Its pretty much stock ics which I prefer, not much of a fan of modded stuff.

I think they're referring to Eugene's kernel found here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1420912
And I agree, Codename Android and Eugene's kernel have been the best combo for me

I've run several ICS ROMs since getting my NS and I would definately concur that Codename is fantastic. They're on 1.4 now I believe.
I would definitely try Air Kernel by r_data as well. Its so smooth. Best I've tried yet.

The link on the official website is broken so here is a drop box link. http://db.tt/fRdz4DSh
