CWM 3.2 SGS4g - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

Okay, so i want to put CWM Final on my SGS4g... I tried the other night following the instructions. Then, when i booted into recovery i got the new yellow CWM but then after another reboot for an unrelated issue it reverted back to the voodoo red...do i have to remove the voodoo stuff before i update to CMW final? Little help here..
thanks!

Red CWM is what you want not yellow. Don't know what your doing but if you got red CWM you've got final.

what instructions are you following?
CWM final by krylon is orange. it was the recovery that started it all for this phone. it works well.
CWM voodoo, which is the one you want, is red. it is the updated one that we use to have voodoo sound and it skips the 3e recovery. i would recommend using this one for the current builds.

If you have the red CWM, I'm pretty sure that's one you want (someone please correct me if I'm wrong).

3.0.2.8x is what i have, so that's the final?

you have the red one. its the voodoo cwm
the woman is linda. she converts to and from ext4. let her convert and you should be good to go.

[Q] What's the deal with kernels?

Since I was an android virgin until just before Christmas, I'm still trying to get to grips with all the cool stuff that can be done.
I've rooted the phone and unlocked the bootloader. Everything else is currently stock.
I don't want to go to Clockwork recovery, or Cyanogen/MoDaCo ROMs. Not yet. I'm still savouring the "Google Experience".
However, I have three questions (which may turn into many more ) about flashing new kernels, and I don't want to clog up any specific kernal thread with noob questions.
1) Does flashing a kernel wipe the whole phone the way unlocking the bootloader did?
2) If you're running stock ROM with new kernel, will you still pick up OTA updates as before?
3) How do you get the original kernal back if you don't like the new one (or if it just goes totally tits up)?
Thanks guys
EDIT: Yes, I realise there is a search and this may well have been asked before. But before someone points this out, I'd like to mention that if you do a search for "android kernel", you get approximately 1 bajillion hits...

1) No, you should not wipe anything before flashing a kernel. You should however do a NANDroid backup.
2) You should be able to but it will wipe your kernel.
3) Restore your backup from #1

flashing a kernel doesnt wipe your phone, it simply replaces whatever kernel is in your phone at the moment.

2) Is fine, as once I've figured out how to NANDroid backup, re-flashing it should be easy enough. 3) Is fine, once I've taken the backup in the first place.

Excellent, thanks!
Ok. So all the NANDroid guides I've seen here start with ADB and Fastboot (which I remember doing when I rooted the phone), but then they say about flashing alternative recovery images... is that necessary? Or is that what the fastboot thing was?
I've just checked and ADB still works, so if fastboot is an alternative recovery image, am I good to take a NANDroid backup, and if so, how do I do that?
If Fastboot is not an appropriate recovery image, do I need Clockwork Recovery (is that different to the "CWM" I see mentioned around here?)?
The Nexus S guide I read said that there was a NANDroid option in the Clockwork Recovery. Now this isn't in my recovery options, obviously, but I assume with ADB, a command prompt and a few instructions, I can do it manually. Maybe.
Bear with me guys, I'll get there eventually...
Ok, scratch the NANDroid questions. NANDroid is a backup tool contained in the Clockwork Mod recovery image.
Using Fastboot, you can boot from the recovery image without flashing it (using this guide here), so I've still got whatever recovery image I got when I did Paul's rooting technique, but have booted into CWM once to do the NANDroid backup.
I may flash CWM later, that's a task for another day.
So. Now I've got the backup (and thus, booting from that image again later, the ability to restore from it), I can try flashing the kernel. Which I can do from the regular recovery image.

To flash from the stock recovery you must rename files update.zip just FYI. I've said it before and I'll say it again; there are no possible negative repercussions from flashing a non-stock recovery image.
Apparently it was unsigned, so the stock recovery wouldn't do anything with it.
Back in CWM and it worked fine. I may have to flash that, it's damned useful...
So now I have a new kernel!
Thanks for all your help

Ah, am I right in thinking that if I flash CWM, I can't revert back to stock if I want to?

Yes, you can flash back. Not only can you but depending on how you did flash the recovery the phone may revert it on your behalf. I know mine has several times, like any time I reboot. There's ways to stop it from doing that but I don't mind.
To get the stock recovery back if it isn't automatically restoring means flashing an NAND from the Dev section here.
I didn't want to open a new thread just to ask this so I hope it's OK to post it here.
I'm very interested in getting supercurio's voodoo sound and ext4 mod on my Nexus S but I don't need/want the overclocked frequencies and other stuff included on most of the kernels out there. You guys know any kernel that I could flash to get those and keep my stock fequencies?
Thanks

If you flash the Trinity max kernel and do not adjust the clock you will have everything your asking for. This kernel boots at stock and has Voodoo and ext4 built in.

question about clockworkdmod and charge

I recently got my charge. used jt's
[ROOT] [KERNEL] [RECOVERY] - Root / Voodoo Lagfix / CWM Recovery
and got root and voodoo going.
then I downloaded CWM from the market and tried to "backup current rom"
after I did this the phone rebooted and is now stuck on the "samsung" splash screen.
anyone know why this happened?
why did CWM do this when I tried to backup the rom? anyone know because I do not know.
i tried to odin jt's file again but its still stuck on the samsung screen.
I just odin'd [ODIN] Stock Rooted ED1 (downgrade from ED2) [2011.05.18]
and was able to get it past the samsung screen but now its stuck in a boot animation loop.
Just wondering if anyone can tell me what happened when i tried to create a back up in CWM. and any ideas on what to do next. thanks!
i am going to try to odin altered beast and see if this will get it past the boot animation. if not i am totally out of ideas and will take any.
thanks guys,
if you don't like this post feel free to ignore it.

You can't dl cwm from the market. you have to install the version jt1134 posted in the first thread. your phone is bootlooping because you didn't disable lagfix b4 flashing ed1 package.
Flash the Alltered Beast Odin package and see if that doesn't get you unstuck.
Oh, and don't use cwm for backup/restore, it doesn't work yet.

thank you. i am flashing altered beast now.
and yes it got me past the boot animation and i am back into my phone.
thank you for the reply.
I must go to sleep now as i cannot think straight.
[Odin][Rom][5/29/11]AC's Altered Beast **Alpha** Voodoo & CWM, ED2 with roo
seems pretty cool so far.props there.
but can i flash Jt's back over this and go back to the more stock feel with root? or first disable lagfix then go to ed1 then to jt's?
I think i will try that tomorrow night.(unless i fall totally in love with alteredbeast)
thank you for the replies and i hope my mistake can help someone else from not doing the same.

Yes you can change roms now. If you flash a non-voodoo kernel you have to disable lagfix b4 flashing or you'll get stuck again

What method are you using... and are you being impatient?
And what have you done so far... if you want help you need to provide details.
i am trying to reflash a rom or get into CWM. i press the up+down & power button and it just stays at the screen. but i can get into download mode though
i have flashed multiple roms already and my phone was already rooted before. i wanted to get back to stock and i restored from backup and thats when this happened. so im kinda of lost when u say "what method"...sorry!
You restored from back up... what ROM/Kernel were you on when you made the back up? And what ROM/Kernel were you on when you tried to restore?
Add: You were trying to root in your first post and now you are flashing... that is why I was asking what method. CWM/ODIN/Heimdall....
i was on the stock everything when i made the backup, that was before i flashed my first rom. and i was on the "{rom}Cwm-GB-2.3.6-Octane-V3.0 XPLOD NO CIQ EDITION 12-10-11 now with power menu mod" when i tired to restore. i use the CWM on my first flashed of rom.

Stock GB? Stock GB doesn't have CWM to make a nandroid back up. How did you make the back up?
If your phone will turn on, regardless on it's state, you can more than likely flash stock through ODIN or Heimdall. I read most people have problems restoring nandroid backups.
ROM-ODIN-2.3.6-Gingerbread Offical
The KJ6 Heimdall One-Click Collection
i was on stock "everything" when i did the backup and when i was on "{rom}Cwm-GB-2.3.6-Octane-V3.0 XPLOD NO CIQ EDITION 12-10-11 now with power menu mod" when i tried to restore. i flashed my first rom with CWM.
Ok... I guess. You were on Stock everything and had CWM?
Use ODIN or Heimdall and flash back to stock.
i did the backup from CWM. i was already rooted when i did the backup, i just didnt have a custom rom at the time. what is the best method? heimdall or odin?

I guess what I am trying to tell you is... if you had CWM you could not have been on stock everything. CWM comes with a custom kernel you flashed. That is the only way to have CWM. That is why I was trying to determine what CWM you were in. Because nandroid backups/restores are not compatible with in different versions of CWM.
You are in a bootloop.
I use ODIN. Others use Heimdall. I prefer ODIN. Others say Heimdall is easy. If you have used either before, use the one you already have on your machine. If you haven't used either before, read how to use both and pick the one you think you can do without messing up your phone.
Here is thread about kernels and CWM and the very last post says it all.
okay. thanks man. i appreciate it

CWM question

Hello I want to try cm9 to see what its about.I'm using this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/wik...anogenMod_9#Installing_from_a_stock.2FBML_rom. It asks to Reboot to RED CWM and I don't know how. Right now when I go to cwm its orange v5.0.2.7. Another thing is Installing from a stock/BML rom? does this mean I rest to factory in cmw I'm using Valahla black FB.It doesnt say anything about installing the 2.6.35.7-cyanogenmod-ICS kernel with Hefe Kernel do I need to flash that?. If I'm right I have to install cm7 first. I'm not looking for links I can hunt them all down, just some answers
Thanks!
Just install it from cwm. Those instructions need to be updated. The CWM color means nothing its the version you are on. As long as you are on 5.x.x.x its all good.
Follow the instructions in the cm9 thread in the development sections.
Good to know it looks like I was just over complicating things

How to Switch from TWRP to ClockWorkMod?

Hello, I'm needing a bit of advice on what to do when switching from my current recovry, TWRP, to ClockWorkMod. I do realize that some say it was never ported over right to the One X, but I'm needing to use it to test a theme for a dev that uses Universal Flasher. I'm pretty sure I can just go into the CWM app and click "Install CWM" but I'd like to make sure I don't corrupt my recovery If anyone could help me that'd be great!
*Edit* Whoops, I didn't realize that the One X was not officially supported. So seeing that, could I just flash the CWM recovery.zip in TWRP and then again once I'm in CWM to make sure it sticks?

Yes, but could you please elaborate on that? I understand people think it was never properly ported to our phone, but I'm needing to use it to test a theme for a dev. The only reason I'm wanting to use CWM is that his theme uses Universal Flasher, which isn't supported by TWRP.

sure you can overwrite twrp by flashing cwm, but why would that theme only be flashable through universal flasher ??
if you're gonna go to cwm better make a nand backup and a full backup of your sd and pull all of it onto your computer. CWM on hox has some unpredictable reactions.
Here's your answer : you don't want to ..If u want I will laugh when u accidently f up and sd card gets wiped and u can't mount and have to reflash twrp

I actually found in the CWM forum for the One X that one guy who has an AT&T version of the One X, like me, tried using CWM and erased EVERYTHING on the phone rendering it useless. I'm really hesitant with this now. I'll contact the dev and see if he can somehow make it work on TWRP (doubt it, but it's worth a shot)
And the international cwm is mot for us that's for endeavor you'd have to dig up a old thread somewhere in this forum ..but don't install the one from Rom manager

let me repeat what i said earlier: if you cannot be talked out of it. just make a nand backup and a full sd backup and pull it on your computer, that way if something happens you can just restore everything, just seems like a lot of work to test a theme, must be some THEME
I pm'd the dev of that theme he said flash cwm to flash theme then just flash back twrp. Im about to do it soon to flash the theme. Id backup sdcard first though.
