I'm going to give CM7 a whirl...
1. it says to start from a red CWM, mine is green (stock froyo with modded 3e recovery). Is that a problem?
2. Does the rom contain a compatible kernel and modem?
Thanks in advance.
Alright so it sounds like you've already installed the modified recovery? Did you use a file manager to delete the original and add the modified one?
If so, I think your next step would be to flash the community kernel v8, it can be found in the infuse development section, or just go to the stickied superthread and find it there.
You need to flash that kernel with sgs kernel flasher found in the market. (free)
That will give you red recovery.
As for if you need red cwm to flash, I do not know, I have only used red recovery to flash roms and I've never had a problem.
yes, I used root exlorer. sounds like I'm on the right track then, thanks!
Hi all, hope you can help. I installed clockworkmod recovery onto my wife's captivate, and now it won't boot - it's stuck at the "galaxy-S" screen.....I can get it into the YELLOW TRIANGLE screen and once managed to get it into the clockworkmod menu screen.
I believe the phone has android 2.3, not 2.2 on it and this might have been my mistake. The entry point into the kernel is likely different...
how can i fix this? do i need to remove clockworkmod and go back to the stock bootloader? The phone is not rooted, yet (that was the next step).
I haven't been able to find anything in the forums about people that have done (the stupid thing that I did) and installed clockworkmod on a 2.3 phone.
Thanks.
How exactly did you flash cwm? You shouldn't even be able to cause if 3e recovery signature verification?
If you can get to the yellow android screen, that's download mode. You're actually in a good place right now.
To fix where you are, take a look at the development section - there's a post about One-click stock packages. If you're sure she was on Gingerbread, grab one of the non-bootloader Gingerbread stock packages and flash that from download mode.
If you're not sure, I would suggest grabbing one of the Gingerbread stock packages with bootloaders (just to make sure).
In either case, see if you can find a one-click package with ClockworkMod Recovery baked into the kernel (it should say on the post which ones have it). That way you can flash what you want right out of the gate.
thanks. i am quite sure it has gingerbread. the person i bought it from said they did a kies update to 2.3.
i was following the instructions from the cyanogenmod wiki for the captivate: hxxp://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Captivate:_Full_Update_Guide
after it finished installing the "clockworkmod recovery" i got into this bind. are those instructions for froyo only?
If you followed the instructions about flashing the speedmod kernel, that's where it's hanging. You've got a froyo kernel with a GB rom. Not a big deal, but Android isn't happy about it. Flash a stock GB package, or find a GB kernel with CWM (like boog's) and flash that and you should be ok.
thanks. do i do this using ODIN or heimdall? I installed CWM using heimdall, and in my frantic reading i thought i saw something about installing stock bootloader/rom packages with ODIN after installing CWM could brick it? Or did I misread that?

Using heimdall is fine (it's also my personal preference between the two, but either will work).
With where you're at, you really shouldn't need to flash any bootloaders. That's pretty much the only area where there is a real risk of hard bricking the phone.
Since Heimdall worked for you once, I'd suggest grabbing the Heimdall one-click I made that's in my signature. You don't need to open it in Heimdall - just download, double-click it, and let it get ready to run. Then connect the phone in download mode and click "flash". You'll have the stock GB rom, with Boog's kernel and CWM all ready to go. You can then flash CM7 from recovery there (you'll probably have to flash it twice, though).
On a side note - flashing stock will wipe your apps. I'm assuming you backed everything up before this. If not, you might need to try and just flash a kernel first, do your backups, then go from there.
(Should you want to do that, go here, grab the one from the "Here is the odin flashable version flash it first if your on stock: Link Mirror" set of links, and then flash that in Heimdall.)
wow, thanks guys, i can breathe easier now. jmtheiss, i got it reflashed to UCKH3 using your one-click package (though now it is AT&T rather than rogers, but i really don't care as long as it works!).
does the one-click root application work with 2.3.4? or is there a more-preferred way to root it now?
Again, thanks so much for the assistance people!
In theory, you should already be rooted (I believe boog's kernel, which was in my one-click, is rooted). If not, go to the bottom of boog's 1st post, and grab the KH3 zip file. Flash that in CWM, and you'll have root permissions.
Or, if you're flashing to CM7, you can just do it from recovery as you are right now. I know from personal experience it works.
thanks everyone. it all worked, and all is good. wife is not an angrybird anymore

Glad to hear that she's not flying over your house shooting explosive eggs. Always a turn for the better.
Had the same problem once before, odin fixed it aswell
I managed to root my bosses GS4g rooted successful with one click which was easy but no matter how much I read up on things I came up to a dead end with getting recovery. Right now if I hold volume up and down and power I get the basic factory reset or reboot options with blue text. Any suggestions? When I try to get a custom recovery going so I can flash roms it says it cant mount the sdcard? Even thought the device reads it fine when booted normally. Any suggestions?
Well if you're already rooted you can use:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_4G#Using_SGS_Kernel_Flasher
You'll need to find the froyo voodoo kernel (should be for KD1) if you're on Froyo (version 2.2.x) or you can use the bhundven's kernel for GB (version 2.3.x).
Both kernels will give you root.
Maybe I just dont get it...I rooted a G2 and Sensation no problem and flash roms like they are going out of style but the GS4g really has me stumped...Problem is I can't flash anything because there is no option to choose zip file....is it that different from an htc phone?
Once you have CWM you should be able to flash roms using the zip files just like normal. When you hold both volume buttons and power until splash screen... release power... and continue holding volume up and down it should take you to CWM. It is built directly into the kernels so if you followes all the steps correctly it will work.

What you need is to get info Recovery mode. The three button combo works on my Fascinate, but rarely on my wifes, GS4G, so I used ADB. New to the forum so I can't post links, but ADB is straight forward. and once installed you go to a bommand prompt and type:
"adb reboot becovery"
Once there you can load any Zip , I loaded and love the Valhalla ROM.

FBis251 told you to flash a kernel. jigglynuts told you that you can flash anything once you have CWM. kpedrick told you how to get into recovery.
The rest of the story is that the kernel FBis251 is telling you to flash is the custom kernel that will give you CWM (which is red) that will give you the option to install the zip. Right now you have standard recovery (which is blue) and there is no option to install from zip.
Flash the kernel.

The link above is for FROYO. NOT GB.
Reread FBis251 post as he knows what he is talking about.
I have a slight issue with my Inspire.
I flashed the asopX ROM and I didn't like it.
I followed the steps to wipe the phone and attempted to install another ROM.
I didn't know that asopX installed TWRP as the recovery.
I have tried to install a few ROMs and each one has failed almost immediately.
Have I bricked my phone? Is there anything I can do to get it back up and running.
I am panicked here and really could use the help.
Thanks!
I have no idea what twrp is... but no, doubtfully it's bricked. See if you can find 4ext recovery and flash that to install roms. If you are unsure how to flash having a romless phone, the install the last rom thay worked, flash 4ext then you should be good to go.
Sent from a dream.
Team Win Recovery Project.
It won't let me flash the last ROM that worked.

That, what Teichopsia told you is right. You didn't brick your phone. But you will have to flash a new recovery if you want to restore a backup or install a different rom that is not fully compatible with the one you have.
Just get the CWM and flash it through fastboot. If you have issues to do it, just let me know.
I don't know what I did, but everything is working now. I installed the last working ROM and I can get into the phone, so, I will work on getting a different recovery onto the phone.
This has been a rough few hours. Thanks for the quick responses, and if I discover what caused it, or what I did to fix it, I will be sure to let you know.
Thanks again!
For one aospx DOES NOT install team win recovery. I've been using aospx since ar15 off and on now its my daily driver. I always full wipe and my 4ext recovery has stayed in place. If it did install it it would have been mentioned in his op or been discussed in the thread

Use 4EXT recovery, do a full wipe in recovery and flash a new rom.
Also, a Question thread does not belong into the General board but into the...?
Come on, who knows the answer...?
Right, Q&A board!

I got the phone off craigslist yesterday and it has the rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1733097 and now i have to flash back to stock but i like the rom. How do i flash back using without using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21953878&postcount=2 Can i use odin still? Can someone tell me a easy way to flash back to stock please.
Look for Gremlin Remover in dev section.

Which ROM are you talking about? I'm sure if you read the OP of the one you want, it will have clear directions you can follow. If you don't understand something in the directions, however, please come back and ask!
This Rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1733097 & now im on 2.3.4 Gingerbread when i used Gremlin Remover. Im not sure how to get to the rom now
Ah, Ok. If you're rooted, get SGS Kernel Flasher from the play store, it's free. Then, use it to flash AntonX's 1.1.3 kernel, from the dev section. After you do that, flash to CM7, THEN flash AOKP.
Or, you can wait till FB releases the next update, which is supposed to fix the BML>MTD conversion. But, I don't know when that will be.
Edit: Make sure you read the instructions for both the ROMs carefully, before you flash them! It can save your device a lot of trouble!

I did the kernel after i went to recovery and tried to install AOKP and it said installation aborted..
Make sure you follow the directions to flash in the AOKP thread. I read flashing from BML works. Try again follow the directions in the thread.

What's BML? Link Please ? The tread says flash using CMW but it didn't work..
Does it have to do with it being on 2.3.4 & build number says GINGERBREAD.VUVKG4?
Make sure your recovery says CMW 5.xx.xx (x's being numbers) I think the recovery in gremlin remover is the old CWM 3.xx.xx.
Also If you installed antonx's kernel reboot the phone and try again. I have flashed from stock with root to aokp several times the past few days.

My CMW is Blue if that matters and it says CWM-based Recovery v5.0.2.8 . If its not the updated CWM how do i update it?
Make sure you have the most recent version of aokp I believe it is .v3 now. That is the only version that can be flashed straight from stock based roms.
