I recently got my charge. used jt's
[ROOT] [KERNEL] [RECOVERY] - Root / Voodoo Lagfix / CWM Recovery
and got root and voodoo going.
then I downloaded CWM from the market and tried to "backup current rom"
after I did this the phone rebooted and is now stuck on the "samsung" splash screen.
anyone know why this happened?
why did CWM do this when I tried to backup the rom? anyone know because I do not know.
i tried to odin jt's file again but its still stuck on the samsung screen.
I just odin'd [ODIN] Stock Rooted ED1 (downgrade from ED2) [2011.05.18]
and was able to get it past the samsung screen but now its stuck in a boot animation loop.
Just wondering if anyone can tell me what happened when i tried to create a back up in CWM. and any ideas on what to do next. thanks!
i am going to try to odin altered beast and see if this will get it past the boot animation. if not i am totally out of ideas and will take any.
thanks guys,

You can't dl cwm from the market. you have to install the version jt1134 posted in the first thread. your phone is bootlooping because you didn't disable lagfix b4 flashing ed1 package.
Flash the Alltered Beast Odin package and see if that doesn't get you unstuck.
Oh, and don't use cwm for backup/restore, it doesn't work yet.

thank you. i am flashing altered beast now.
and yes it got me past the boot animation and i am back into my phone.
thank you for the reply.
I must go to sleep now as i cannot think straight.
[Odin][Rom][5/29/11]AC's Altered Beast **Alpha** Voodoo & CWM, ED2 with roo
seems pretty cool so far.props there.
but can i flash Jt's back over this and go back to the more stock feel with root? or first disable lagfix then go to ed1 then to jt's?
I think i will try that tomorrow night.(unless i fall totally in love with alteredbeast)
thank you for the replies and i hope my mistake can help someone else from not doing the same.

Yes you can change roms now. If you flash a non-voodoo kernel you have to disable lagfix b4 flashing or you'll get stuck again
thanks for the replies guys.
im still running alteredbeast. Animations on it are nice.

Ok, so i have had a samsung captivate since last summer. I just did the official froyo update the other day and it was successful with kies mini. I then decided to root it using super1click which also worked successfully. I have superuser, titanium backup with busybox installed, and super manager and terminal emulator. I also successfully got clockworkmod flashed and working.
My problem is that ive got the new cognition rom on my internal sd card, but when i try to flash it with cwm, i get the 3e recovery failure message. Ive been reading various sites today on how to fix this problem, but every site seems to tell me something different. I ask this question here, because it seems to be the most knowledgeable site to go to.
How do i get my rooted captivate, with all the above installed and running, to allow me to flash a new rom and possible a new kernal down the road? Im about to go insane trying to decipher through all the info all the different sites have said. Sorry to write such a novel on a tired subject, but im going crazy. Any help will be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks.

If you would have done a search here then you would have found that you need to do one of 2 things.
1. Flash back to 2.1
2. Replace the 3e recovery with one that doesnt check for the sig.
I dont know how to replace the 3e recovery. I think ill go with flashing back to 2.1. Once i dl Odin and flash back to 2.1, then i can flash a new rom or a new kernel? Will it undo everything i've done so far? Thanks for the help.

Here is a link to the replacement recovery.
Make sure you have the right odin and that your 3 button works right.
Yesh doing this will wipe out everything. Make sure to back up. Do not back up system data at all as when you restore it, it can lead to major issues. Once done with a custom rom it will be wiped clean. You will have to redo contacts, email, and all other settings
Thanks. Would it be okay to just flash a new kernel like speedmod kernal and just use the stock rom? Is that possible to do while im on rooted 2.2? I like the rom just fine, i just want it faster mainly. Thanks again.

To be honest I am not sure. I only had the stock on for a few hours as it was just not that great compared to the 2.2.1 rom that I have been used to running. I need BT voice dial and the added exchange options so 2.2 was not really for me. If you want a stock feel but faster then I would go with COG or one of the other roms based on the kb1 rom.
So I've come to the conclusion that I should just flash back to 2.1 and go from there. I have odin downloaded, but I'm not certain how to use it. Do you guys think I should flash a custom rom from stock, or just flash a kernel with lag fix and delete the bloatware? Thanks.
first flash 2.1 stock to get rid of the damn 3e. custom roms dont replace that always. also most custom roms dont flash with odin.
get a stock rom. read the instructions, flash

If you are getting .zip signature errors when trying to flash a rom (because you are using 3e recovery) you will not be able to flash a kernel.
Supercurio did make a KB1 kernel that is installable via Odin. If you install that, you will also get CWM recovery. Then you can flash anything you want.
Either way you will need an Odin program. Either Odin One Click to flash back to stock 2.1 or Odin v1.7 to flash the Supercurio KB1 Kernel .tar file.

Correct me if i'm wrong but I think the speedmod kernal is i9000 based which would cause a major headache/bootloop on the stock rom.

The problem is, the OP has no idea what he's doing. It sounds like he's wanting to flash to 2.1, then add a I9000 kernel. Since he's all over the place, it's hard to decipher what he's thinking.
To the OP. I'd HIGHLY suggest you look for the stickied "how to" video's by Connexxion. They will tell you what you need to do and show you EXACTLY how to do it. Invaluable info for the noobs.
Here is the link your looking for, download the installer zip file at the bottom of the first post. Extract to your fancy, use the install.bat file once extracted. Be sure to have the phone connect to the pc (DO NOT MOUNT) and have USB Debugging on.

ok no need to flash 2.1
get neldars kernel flashing app from the market
get a kernel for froyo without 3e recovery in the dev section. this one is great
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=547852&d=1300708475
use neldars app (edit) "sgs kernel flasher" or something to that effect. to flash this kernel
then flash cognition
you can also use odin3 but not the oneclick downloader without the .pit file and flash the same kernel placed in the pda slot.
when you installed keis mini, it installed new WRONG drivers (for odin)
reinstall the original other drivers.
BUT. in your OP all you wanted was to be able to flash COG or something.
ALL you have to do is fix your 3e recovery, SEVERAL people including myself have told you how to fix it. then CWM will work! you dont need a computer to fix 3e if you have root explorer (google it $) .
if you are going to flash a custom rom anyway dont bother going back to 2.1.
if you are going to stay stock, 2.2 is better anyway. (aside from 3e but staying stock dont matter)
you can also use odin3 but not the oneclick downloader without the .pit file and the same kernel placed in the pda slot.

@ dani - dude read the thread. odin doesn't recognize his phone.!! try to catch up before butting in...
well that doesn't make my whole post irrelivent. if he is rooted and has busy box he can use neldars kernel flasher. sorry if i over looked something.
Ok, well i got the aio toolbox, and i flashed back to stock. Now im running 2.1-update1. How do i go about rooting now? I cant seem to find a root file. Thanks.
This problem has probably been addressed previously, but I really cannot find it after spending hours combing through all the previous threads so here we go:
I did an ED1 recovery and gained root access then I did a successful flash of the Charge Voodoo Lagfix Kernel. Then I attempted to flash a swype theme .zip using CWM. When I attempted to flash the .zip my phone got stuck in a bootloop and I had to re-flash the ED1 recovery to get out of the loop. Afterwards, I had to do a factory reset to get the phone out of softbrick. Two days later...and completely restoring my phone I was able to perform ED1 recovery and root access, but whenever I attempt to re-flash Voodoo Lagfix Kernel, my phone gets stuck. The screen displays an icon that looks like a phone logo linked to a PC with an ! mark. My quad scores were around 1400 after previous voodoo flash but now they are around 900. I feel pretty confidant that I have lost Voodoo flash and would really appreciate help in figuring out how to get this kernel re-flashed. Thanks from a noob!
After you flash ED1 it should come up to the stock bootloader. Format everything from there. I suggest download a new copy of the CWM and try again. Maybe a different USB port and perhaps a different copy of ODIN.

When I re-flashed ED1 I did go into stock bootloader to recover phone. I had to factory reset. I then blocked ED2 update. Any link to CWM and new ODIN would be appreciated.

I just finished putting on Clockwork recovery after the OTA and then flashed Imosyen's 4.0 kernel. During the process I heard the Voodoo stuff take place, but upong rebooting my phone I don't have root. I read in these boards on the EE4 OTA that this should have worked, any ideas and has anyone got thier phone rooted on the new OTA?
Thanks.

Try getting back into CW recovery and let me know how that goes. If so then just download superuser and you got it.
No root
I can boot into CWR after using ODIN to put it on once and under voodoo controls app it shows my phone as being voodoo on all partitions, just don't have root. I knew the OTA would kill root, was just hoping thier was a quick fix out there like just flashing a kernel. The phone is pretty snappy though with imoysens kernel running voodoo and using ADW as the launcher. Like what I see so far.

Someone didn't read the instructions for properly installing the leaked OTA?
BEFORE YOU ODIN BACK TO EE4, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE SU FLASHABLE ZIP, THE OTA UPDATE AND IMOSEYON'S KERNEL ON YOUR SDCARD!
Make sure the update file is renamed to "update" and that it's on the root of your sdcard. (not in any folders or anything)
Odin back to EE4. Reboot normally.
Turn the phone off, then reboot into Stock Recovery and run the update.
Once the update finishes and the phone boots regularly. Reboot into Download Mode and plug the phone into the computer.
Start Odin, Uncheck "Auto Reboot", select PDA, NOT PHONE!
Click on the PDA tab and find your recovery file then click "start."
Once it is done and you see the word "PASS" on Odin, unplug the usb cable and press down all three buttons to boot into recovery (volume up, home, power)
Once in recovery, wipe cache, wipe dalvik, mount /system and flash the SU flashable zip.
Go back and wipe cache and dalvik again, mount /system again and flash the kernel.
After that, your recovery will stick and you're good to go. You are now rooted and running on EP4D.
Here is the flashable Super User zip. http://www.multiupload.com/V6R1RZJPXV

most if not all root issues can be fixed by simply flashing superuser in CWM (you can get the latest .zip from the dev ChainsDD's superuser site), then downloading/updating it in the market if it doesn't show up
blazing through on my 4G Droid Charge
If interested, the CWM version found here is already rooted.
What I did:
Had octane 2.X running fine.
Octane 3.0 released, so I wanted to upgrade.
Downloaded to sd
installed from CWM, rebooted from CWM
Phone kept looping the SGS4G initial splash screen, and would not do anything else.
Had to pull battery.
Put into download mode, Odin flashed bootlooders that I got from here
then flashed Krylon360's stock ota noCIQ rom, and here we are.
I know the bootloop has something with ext4 being enabled. I would appreciate if someone could point me at a tut, or explain it to me as if I was 5 Would love to use Octane again. Man I miss that sound quality

At this point are you still boot looping or did flashing Krylon's stock noCIQ get you running again?
Ignore that, you must still be boot looping else you wouldn't have posted. LOL.
The boot loaders you loaded are for KC1 which is Froyo. You need to flash the GB boot loaders to get going again. I'd suggest using one of Bryan's ROMs from the The KJ6 Heimdall One-Click Collection. After flashing one of those, then you should be able to re-flash Octane.
That did the trick! Thank you!
you can try again, it helped me

What method are you using... and are you being impatient?
And what have you done so far... if you want help you need to provide details.
i am trying to reflash a rom or get into CWM. i press the up+down & power button and it just stays at the screen. but i can get into download mode though
i have flashed multiple roms already and my phone was already rooted before. i wanted to get back to stock and i restored from backup and thats when this happened. so im kinda of lost when u say "what method"...sorry!
You restored from back up... what ROM/Kernel were you on when you made the back up? And what ROM/Kernel were you on when you tried to restore?
Add: You were trying to root in your first post and now you are flashing... that is why I was asking what method. CWM/ODIN/Heimdall....
i was on the stock everything when i made the backup, that was before i flashed my first rom. and i was on the "{rom}Cwm-GB-2.3.6-Octane-V3.0 XPLOD NO CIQ EDITION 12-10-11 now with power menu mod" when i tired to restore. i use the CWM on my first flashed of rom.

Stock GB? Stock GB doesn't have CWM to make a nandroid back up. How did you make the back up?
If your phone will turn on, regardless on it's state, you can more than likely flash stock through ODIN or Heimdall. I read most people have problems restoring nandroid backups.
ROM-ODIN-2.3.6-Gingerbread Offical
The KJ6 Heimdall One-Click Collection
i was on stock "everything" when i did the backup and when i was on "{rom}Cwm-GB-2.3.6-Octane-V3.0 XPLOD NO CIQ EDITION 12-10-11 now with power menu mod" when i tried to restore. i flashed my first rom with CWM.
Ok... I guess. You were on Stock everything and had CWM?
Use ODIN or Heimdall and flash back to stock.
i did the backup from CWM. i was already rooted when i did the backup, i just didnt have a custom rom at the time. what is the best method? heimdall or odin?

I guess what I am trying to tell you is... if you had CWM you could not have been on stock everything. CWM comes with a custom kernel you flashed. That is the only way to have CWM. That is why I was trying to determine what CWM you were in. Because nandroid backups/restores are not compatible with in different versions of CWM.
You are in a bootloop.
I use ODIN. Others use Heimdall. I prefer ODIN. Others say Heimdall is easy. If you have used either before, use the one you already have on your machine. If you haven't used either before, read how to use both and pick the one you think you can do without messing up your phone.
Here is thread about kernels and CWM and the very last post says it all.
okay. thanks man. i appreciate it
