Hello,
I'm having a crazy issue right now, I have flashed insertcoin 3.2.7. and everything was working fine for about a day, and now i'm can't load webpages or any other thing that requires data. Not sure if this is a radio/ril issue, but if so can someone point me in the right direction as to that radio stuff is waaay more advanced then what i know.
Here is a list of the software info if that can help anyone to answer my question. TMOUS
HTC Sense version 3.5 Android version 2.3.5
kernel 2.6.35.13-gc35910f (believe stock???)
Baseband: 10.56.9035.00P_10.14.9035.01_M
Have tried to reflash, and also tried to factory reset in CWM and go back to previous backup and it says "check MD5 fail" or "no match" or something like that.
This really sucks, I would ask in the Insert Coin Thread but am a uber noob so can't post in dev forums. I have searched for hours and hours and can't find any posts like this. Please Help!

If trying to revert to an older nandroid, try the wipe script to reformat the ext4. Then try to restore again.
As for the radio and ril, you need to have those correspond. If the radio(baseband) is 10.14.9035.01_m you need the ril of HTC-RIL 2.2.0169HMQ.
To flash a ril remember to mount/system in recovery before flashing

Jimmy,
Thanks for the response,
I tried the older nandroid restore after i used superwipe(mike1986) and worked this time. Thanks for the tip.
I actually do have that RIL flashed right now I did mount/system first too!! Thats why this is so confusing to me. I don't know is it something to do with wrong RUU? Ugh! FML ha ha.

It could be the rom trying to use an older radio/ril combo. I had the same radio and ril when I flashed the recent MIUI rom but I had to revert the radio back a few pegs to match the ril of the ROM.
Next time when flashing whichever rom you want, get the current ril of what the rom is. To check to see what RIL you have run getprop "gsm.version.ril-impl" in Terminal Emulator or adb shell and it will print out the RIL version!
Then you will need to pair the ril to the correct radio from there. In my case, I had the updated OTA Radio with the older ril and when I flashed the correct pairing ril, I couldn't get any data as well. I had to revert to an older radio/ril combo to get it to work. Kind of working backwards, but it worked in my case lol.

I believe the ROM is using EUROPE ril/radio combo, the dev is in bucarest. what I dont understand is, if I manually changed the radio/ril to a supposedly verified and working TMOUS combo, what would it have to do with the ROM's ril? As far as the ADB thing or Terminal Emulator idk what the eff happened to it (had adb shell, from "noob guide thread") its no longer on my comp and trying to re-install it is not working! Im sorry I feel like an idiot with all these issues i'm having. ha ha, but hey at least i can laugh about it!!!

Not 100% but the build.prop could be the issue. That's why I reverted to the oldest TMOUS radio and ril.
Use terminal emulator on your phone to get the ril and report back.

Sorry... terminal emulator???
Ok man, after lots of tinkering on windows i managed to get adb shell working again, some how my ril is HTC-RIL 2.2.0190HMQ
???? so am i understanding now, that i am not installing the 169 ril correctly then??? thats what it appears to be to me
Also not aware if this matters or not buuut i'm on Android 2.3.5... so i dont know if 169 will work maybe?
***EDIT***
Ok so i added the 169 Ril and checked it in adb sure enough its there. so now i have matching ril/radio... super, got my H and 5 bars!!! but... my speeds are absolutely garbage! like 30 seconds to find closest server...
Ping is 653
DL is .11 Mbps
UL is .69 Mbps
why so sloooow?
Sorry man, I am not too familiar with Insert Coin. But whenever you flash a new rom or upgrade from an older version, the rils will always be overwritten from whatever the rom has.
Thanks anyways man, I appreciate the help/tips you shot my way, hopefully someone out there has seen this or has come across garbage ass speeds like this pathetic excuse for 4g! Lol, i'm just gonna cancel my data plan all together if i can't figure this out!!!

Make sure your on wcdma preferred under the phone settings when you go *#*#4636#*#*-phone information-towards the bottom a pull down menu should have wcdma preferred chosen. If that looks good go to your apn settings under mobile network and see if your APN Protocol is set to IPv6. Reboot and test.
---------- Post added at 12:57 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:35 AM ----------
Insertcoin now has an update to 3.3.0 from your version. I think he recommends a full wipe as well. And I noticed in the changelog that he matched the ril to the 10.58 radio.
So if you do go ahead with the update, first check the ril to see what the rom gives you. Try the update without changing anything. If you still read slow speeds, go and change the radio to match the ril, but PLEASE BE CAREFUL in flashing radios. It gets sticky if one doesn't know what they are doing.
And FYI, the MIUI rom I am using is also 2.3.5 base android. Also my avg speeds are about 3-4.5 mbps up and about 1.5 mbps down using a stock kernel.

WCDMA preferred check, no problems there but now I am in the APN menu and i'm not seeing where it says APN Protocol i see MMS protocol but that is either WAP2.0 or WAP1.2
And I am familiar with the MIUI rom, it looks really cool i flashed it at one point actually but it was complicated for a noob and not to my tasting.
under my APN settings these are my options... Please Tell me where to change IpV4 to IpV6... I cannot see anything that says "apn protocol" I have filled in the values that my phone reads under these options as well.

No man, I have not flashed that rom yet, I am actually trying out ARHD right now, its super smooth and fluid, but still same issues as far as the speeds are concerned. I dont believe it is an area specific thing because before I rooted my phone originally I had 4g everywhere, full bars, and decent speed (i think tmobile might be crooks. the speeds they claim... baahh ha!) but now my buddies phone, an older HTC non 4g model has around the same speeds i do, sometimes slower sometimes faster, and he's in 3g! its incredible!
I dont know, i'm about to give up hope and just live with these garbage speeds that i seem to be stuck with. I will probably do a complete superwipe and re-flash the most recent InsertCoin, it had so many perks that I really got used to and enjoyed. But I appreciate all the help you've been giving me man.

No problems. But if you are getting such craptastic speeds, can you go to a tmo store and speed test the other "fast" phones? I mean if they can't get at least 2mbps up, that's crazy and I would demand my money back from tmo because they aren't getting me the speed I am paying phone with the phone and plan combined.
Good luck!

Yes I have called them, at first I thought it was me going over my data plan limit and they were just throttling my speeds. but thats not the case. the rep reffered me to this website "www.dslreports.com/mspeed" and you chose the 5k one (it says you need to chose a bigger file) then select the 1MB one. She had told me that my speeds should report back at around 4,000+. Anything below 1,000 is not normal... My speeds were at 400! yes that was no typo... four hundred! lol. so she said she will put in a "service request" for this area i'm in. which pretty much means "f*ck off i dont know whats wrong, and i'm too busy to help you" but i digress. I will be traveling to my local store this weekend and raise hell until something gets fixed, either refund or new phone. Maybe i'll get the new Galaxy or HTC Amaze! Who knows! I dont know if it will be an issue tho with my phone being rooted and all. I will probably just flash one of those 4g icon add-ons and try and pull one over on them! But you are right, it is bull that i'm paying 79.99 per month for this b/s! I'm not looking forward to when the merger with AT&T official happens because as retarded as the TMo reps are, at least they are nice as hell, unlike the mostly all automated system AT&T has in place!

After browsing the Threads for a bit (and I use the word 'a bit' lightly since I'm limited on time at work) I've not really found an answer for the problem I'm having.
Over the weekend I took the plunge and entered into the world of Rooting and custom ROM's on my HTC Inspire 4G. The ROM of choice?
Android Revolution 4G 5.1.7
The results? Well, overall the phone feels nice and smooth. I've noticed that it lags pretty decently if I'm running certain internet radio apps and sometimes that my screen will go black, my home row (four buttons at the bottom of the screen) buttons will stay lit, and I can't make my phone DO anything. I guess this is a lock up? Anyways, these are all minor tweaks for me, and not a big big deal.
The big issue? My H+ is gone, and I don't mean the fact it just shows an H now instead. I mean the fact in areas where I use to get enough signal to stream music all night, I barely get signal, it drops randomly, or it'll play one song, and disconnect. I have to unlock the screen and restart the app altogether to get it playing again. Rinse, repeat. The speed has been a huge drop too. Standing outside my room where I was getting 1.5Mbps-2Mbps download speeds and about the same for upload, I'm now getting 512kbps download and maybe 80kbps upload...A HUGE difference.
I'm using the radio suggested in the thread for the ROM (Radio_12.54.60.25_26.09.04.11_M2) and I've tried a few others as well, and still see horrible results. Is there any suggestions about this, or is it time to find a new ROM/way back to the stock ROM and Radio?
Thanks.
I just flashed the same ROM coming from Android Revolution HD 4.0 β 4. Since I'm at work I haven't had a chance to flash the suggested radio yet for Revolution 5.1.7, still using the radio from the 4.0 β 4. I would try 12.41.60.19_26.06.04.14_M, I'm still getting the same signal strength that I was with the old ROM with the new.
Link Its in the middle of the first post.
How's the speed with the suggested Radio? Personally I'm a little disappointed with getting far slower speeds after the ROM swap and rooting the phone.
I'm in the middle of Dallas right now, but I'm getting 76ms ping, 5088kbps down and 1283kbps up. Thats about usual for where I'm at.
And on this ROM I don't know if it will even show an H+, mine just says H. Network says I'm on HSDPA...
Nice. I'll have to change the Radio when I get home and hope its the problem. Downloading at less than 1mbps with four bars and uploading at less than 100kbps kinda caps the phone to the point that my (censored) 4 actually looks less than unappealing lol. Did you do anything else that may be different? I haven't gotten the OTA update since the ROM change (from what I've read, that's not something we get anyways?) and I'm assuming that with this ROM we'll only ever see the H and not H+ like the stock ROM has?
Haven't done anything that I think would affect the signal/speed/data/whatever. This was a fresh download and install from about 3hours ago. If flashing that other radio fails, I would try a clean install, redownload rom, wipe everything that needs wiping and make sure to follow the directions exactly. If all that fails search that thread, FAQ's, I'm almost certain you're not the only one that has had this problem.
Its the second time I've wiped clean (even using the suggested download file he has on the thread for the wiping) with the same results, but I'll give it another whirl. Third time's the charm right? I'm just hoping the radio is the problem so that I can move on to figuring out why running Slacker and Meebo at the same time causes my phone to lag like a SOB now. D:
I had signal problem with the coredroid Rom. I am using stock radio. Make sure u flash RIL with the radio u are using. That will improve signal.

This link explains what RIL is and It also has links to RIL with What ever radio you are running. Just match the radio numbers and flash the Correct RIL

I'll give all the advice above a try and see what works out. Either way, if I can get it working, I'll be sure to mash a few Thank buttons. Lets hope this works, 'cause I'm digging this ROM (minus the uber slow down with Slacker Radio) a whole lot.

Well, I'm finally able to work on my phone, and get ready to download the suggested Radio when...File removed?! Hm, guess I'll have to look around and try to find where to download it from.
Okay, I've tried all the above methods, and even standing in an area with full signal (H, though dialing info with all the stars and such tells me I'm in HSDPA) and I'm still getting a download of about 625kbps and an upload of about...Well, 10kbps when it actually works. Any umm, suggestions or is my phone just SOL? I'd really hate to have to go back to the iDevice due to having a hot fast phone that has the connection speed to rival dialup. x.x'
@ Kuronen
I can help you out here, I had the same problem as you. It is because of the build.prop settings in the Android Revolution 4 roms.
If you need to know specifically how to do edit the file I would be happy to explain.
Here are my setting in the build.prop file that gave me 3mb/1.2mb up/down.
ro.ril.enable.a52.HTC-ITA=1 (probably a standards enforcement flag)
ro.ril.enable.a53.HTC-ITA=1 (...)
ro.ril.enable.a52=0 (this disables older type of encryption)
ro.ril.enable.a53=1 (enables encrption gsm?)
ro.ril.hsdpa.category=13 (this is a little higher than the chipset supports)
ro.ril.hsupa.category=7 (supposed to be the highest cat)
ro.ril.hsxpa=2 (this turns on both hsupa/hspa+?)
ro.ril.avoid.pdp.overlap=1 (this stabilized the connection)
ro.ril.enable.3g.prefix=1 (oddly enough, this doubled my speed!)
ro.ril.enable.hep=1 (I don't know what this does, it doesn't seem to make a diff)
ro.ril.enable.sdr=0 (this is to turn on software data radio, should not be needed)
ro.ril.enable.ucsq=2 (unkown)
ro.ril.enable.gea3=1 (this enables GSM encryption)
ro.ril.enable.prl.recognition=0 (if you are in china leave this as 1)
These settings give me good speeds. In other forums the 3G prefix command is supposed to only "label" the connection as 3G, but I have confirmed that in my area enabling the prefix actually doubles my downlink speed. So it must be flagging something elsewhere.
To edit the build.prop file after you have flashed to your phone you will need the android SDK kit. In general you have to log into the shell of the phone and remount the system partition as RW (read-write) then you can push the build.prop you edited and reboot. Just remember to edit the text file with an editor and uses unix style line feeds (like notepad2 ).

I'll have to give this a try when I get home. I've tried like 3 roms now all with decreasing luck, as well as a handful (including stock) of radios. Though, unless I can figure out why using Slacker Radio causes my phone to respond so slow that it takes a few minutes to move swipe screens, I may end up going back to stock anyways. As much as I don't want to.
Though, I'll give this a whirl first, and hopefully it'll fix my speed issue. I can give up Slacker if everything else works amazing, more so the batter life lol.
Edit: A walk through, or a link to one, would be utterly amazing. After looking at my SDK folder I realized I have no earthly clue how the heck to use it. All I can really do is find virtual devices. D=
On 5.1.6 and 5.1.7. All is fine here, including signal.
I get ~5mbps down and ~1.2 mbps up.
I see your on the Same rom as I am. I haven't fully read through this thread but I'm sure something in the mix u did might have made it to act funny. I have the same rom flash the recommended radio and flash The ril aswell and there seems to be no problem on my end. I'm around 2.5 megs down and 1.3 megs up. Also your phone SHOULD be much smoother and I don't seem to have any glitches on my phone. Also if u can setcpu off the android market that would help the smoothness of your phone with that rom. And if possible what's your build prop? Messing with that could improve signal but I wouldn't reccomend it. Let that be the last thing you mess with.
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA Premium App
I've tried re hack-kitting it, different roms, radios, stock radio with different roms, etc, etc. Kernels updated, RIL and all that, and still get
150kbps download and 70kbps upload.
Massive huge drop from stock pre-root and all that where I was getting closer to 2mbps download and 1.5mbps upload. Which I can't seem to get anymore even with the stock ROM/Radio. Guess its a sign that I should've left things as they were.
I'll try to figure out how to edit build.prop but several hours of googling have given me plenty of 'oh just edit this!' threads, but nothing on detailed instructions on how to get to build.prop to edit.
Since I can't go without a phone for long (on call 24/7) I don't have the ability to sit down and spend a few days making it into a project while I go without a phone...So I guess until I can find a good tutorial on how to edit the build.prop and see if that's it, its time to go back stock.
No point in having a bad-a custom rom that makes it fast, sleek, and uses less battery if using the phone itself isn't enjoyable. No good net, means no good phone in my opinion.

I'm using the radio suggested in the thread for the ROM (Radio_12.54.60.25_26.09.04.11_M2) and I've tried a few others as well, and still see horrible results. Is there any suggestions about this, or is it time to find a new ROM/way back to the stock ROM and Radio?
Thanks.

I had the exact same problem. To be honest, I liked android revolution, but the speeds and signal were a BIG issue for me. I ended up going to a stock ROM that was rooted. I'm back to H+ and decent speeds. I was using CM7 before I loaded up android revolution and it was great. I only switched to revolution because I missed Sense.
I wish I could get my original speed back. D: Honestly it seems like I've lost out since I rooted my phone. I can barely push 1mbps download and 200kbps uploads now. And thats after completely unrooting and restoring my phone to stock. And I still can't play any Pandora/Slacker without opening my phone up over and over and fighting with it to connect. In a place where I use to stream for 8+ hours no problem.
I read about all you guys downloading 2, 3, 4, and 5mbps. I average 1.5mbps
downloads (lets not even talk about upload speeds). The only way I see yall numbers if I am on wifi. I am in south La below New Orleans near the Gulf. I know I am not in the 4G area (yes we have 3G) but seems I should be getting better. Things I have tried and done. With all this changes and with stock phone/ROM my speeds have not changed. I am using the speedtest app for testing. I have tried different times and places etc...
Check with ATT and I am on the 4G plan
On the Gingerbeast ROM (have not tried any others)
Tried the Gingerbeast radio and ril
Tried the recommended ATT radio .06.06.30_M with recommended ril 2.2.0079HM
Tried the recommended ril for the ROSP ROM HTC-RIL 2.2.0018G with the ATT .06.06.30_M (currently running)
Also configure the APN for the recommended ATT phones (tweak the APN and added MediaNet
Well my speeds have not changes (if they did it is very minimal)
Just looking for any wisdom or suggestions as to what to try next. Maybe this is the best we can get down here also.....I dont know anyone that owns a Inspire to compare it to down here.
thanks
Call ATT and see if they're having tower issues in your area. They may be severely degraded.

If you can flash a ROM, radio and edit APN setting you can edit your build.prop. It's really easy to do with RootExplorer

Don't be intimidated because it looks all codey. Just make a backup and go for it, it's the best/fastest/easiest way to learn.
I'm so overwhelmed by the amount of radios I can flash and does anyone with T-Mobile in California have a suggestion for what they use? Right now my data speeds are pretty bad
Also, what is the difference between an RIL and a radio? I'm so confused!

My understading of the RIL is pretty much telling the OS how to use the radio that is installed. Hence the reason that they need to match. I was using radio 9007.19 with the .162 ril and had great speeds here in Utah(sorry i know your looking for someone in cali). But I have just last week modded the three sensations that I work on all to the stock 1.45.405 ruu so that I got all the extras that came with that firmware and I'm not running the newest radio of 9035 with its matching ril and have much better speeds and great battery life. Before I did this ruu installed about a month ago I tried this newer radio and had horrible results, slow speeds and wow talked about a battery sucker. But what every all came in that ruu(rpm.img maybe) really helped that radio in my eyes. Hope this helped a bit.
Are you on the stock rom? I've been using custom roms and my data has been much slower. I was thinking about going to the stock rom but I'm not sure if it's the custom roms that are slowing down my speeds or just the T-Mobile service in my area. I'm using the 173 RIL with the matching latest radio. I get under 1 mbps a lot of the time using the speedtest.net app.

Hence why what works for you, might not work for others and vice versa. So just download a couple of radio's and their RIL, and try each one (using the RIL that is compatible with the radio of course) and try out a few and see which one nets you better results.

Yeah, I've tried several RIL/Radio combinations with no luck. Once in a while, they will go to like 2Mbps, but standing in the same spot, I may get like 500kbps right after.

There got to be a latest radio for T-Mobile USA!
I will watch this thread closely because I am too looking to update the radio on my phone the difference is that I live on Florida.
I remember on my Nexus One updating the Radio was easier just flashing the Corean radio and Voila! Speeds close to 4G always.
While I was out, I did several speed test in the Orange County area. I got 7.272Mbps download and 1.919Mbps upload, and for the second run, I got 5.983Mbps download and 2.321Mbps upload. When I was indoors, I got 1.201Mbps download and 1.268kbps upload. I'm currently using Android Revolution HD 3.6.0 with RIL 173 and Radio 10.15.9305.02.2. My CID is T-MOB010. Hope that helps someone.

Yeah, I'm in So-Cal around the Huntington Beach/Fountain Valley/Garden Grove area. I haven't done any more speed tests since though. I'm on the 200mb data plan and the cycle just started like two days ago so I gotta ration.
thank you WTFD4V1D. im very close to garden groove so ill give this radio a try.

I also tried going back to the 169 RIL and the corresponding radio along with adjusting to these values in my build.prop file:
ro.ril.hsdpa.category=10
ro.ril.hsupa.category=6
ro.ril.hsxpa=3
There are two of these in the build.prop file and I changed both. Still using Android Revolution HD 3.6.0. I'm not sure if those speeds were because I was near a cell tower or something though since I did both of these in the same spot.
Been lurking here for a few weeks, reading, studying, learning, and my eyes are still red...
I just wanted to share my experience so far and get some feedback.
Rooting
I followed the 1 click Ace Hack Kit to the letter, still had an issue where my phone wouldn't boot, screen was on but black, and had to re-install stock from the Ace Kit to correct it. Phone Rooted
Custom Rom
Reviewed all the Inspire Roms and decided on the Revolution HD 6.1.3
Again following everything to the letter, I couldn't get SuperWipe to run, it would abort, but did the full manual wipe (wipe data/factory reset - dalvik cache) in the the boot loader as in the sticky guide for flashing roms, radio's, etc. Was able to install 6.1.3
Q: Is there really any difference between doing it manually and running the SuperWipe Script?
Radio's - Read the Radio Sticky numerous times. Shoot, so far the recommended radio for HD is kicking but however, still have a fundemental question.
Q. I get that it's a gamble, but what sets these radio's apart from what AT&T gives on their stock phone?
I read in the radio sticky they are sort of area specific or vary by location. May or may not be good, try it... I don't get that because I could buy a Inspire in CA, use it in FL, and the stock radio doesn't change. I get that these coders and developers are freaking awesome and above my head, but intrigued none the less.
Doesn't it really come down to tower coverage? Still putting the radio puzzle together after much reading.
Anyway, I wanted to post a BIG THANKS in the Revolution HD Thread but can't as of yet.
I really like the 6.1.3 ROM so far. Some here may hate Sense, but I like the eye candy.
XDA is cool site and still have a lot to learn.
Hey, at least my first post wasn't "How do I boot loop my new phone?"
I'll see you around
Some will say the radio is region specific. I and others find no evidence of that. The Dev will recommend the radio for the matched ROM you choose. That should be your best bet.
Welcome!
I actually don't know if superwipe does anything special or just takes the hassle out of wiping partitions and FDR and cache. in my experience it doesn't make a difference which I do as long as I do one or the other, or both.
As for radios, there are different settings in the build.prop I believe (correct me if i'm wrong) that's set by each version of each radio (and other settings in more places?) but basically it boils down to different settings causing the phone to interact with the network differently. I never had luck with any of the recommended revolution radios so I would always stick to an inspire OTA or update radio and flash the corresponding RIL (radio interface layer, must match the radio you install).
come to think of it now, it might be the RIL that sets the build prop and other settings. now i'm just confused...
The build prop will remain the same regardless of what RIL or radio you use. The devs tweak settings in the build prop to try and squeeze a little more bandwidth but honestly I have never seen a definite increase in speeds by changing these settings. When the inspire was released it did not have the necassary settings to run 4g. They released a radio and new build prop with an update that enabled 4g. People on 3g would not have seen a difference even to this day. This all took place in the froyo days. The build prop has several settings for many aspects of the phone. The build prop only changes when edited by you or the dev.
It's always good to use recommended radios as that will match the RIL in your phone. I have read that new RIL's are backwards compatible as long as you are using a froyo radio on froyo and a gingerbread radio on gingerbread. The only official gingerbread radio released for the inspire is 26.10.04.03 which goes with RIL 2.2.0160. So in my exeperience as long as the RIL is this or higher you might as well just use the official radio. The one recommended for arhd is 26.13.04.19 which is what matches 2.2.0179 but 26.10.04.03 will also work since the RIL is newer than the radio. But if you used 26.13.04.19 on an older RIL like 2.2.0160 you may encounter problems.
As always though, do not report bugs or make any judgements on performance, unless you are using the recommended radio and have not changed the RIL.

I travel alot and can tell you that it really can depend on where you are. One radio and ril works great in alaska but if I go to the lower 48 I normally have to swap them for a different set to get better signal.

Technically as there is only 1 official radio/ril for ATT gingerbread I would be curious to what you use and where. I know you have mentioned radios being location dependant but I can't recall you ever saying what you use.

Please help if I am missing something. I am s-off wire trick. I believe I have the most recent radio. 11.59.3504.00P_11.16.3504.20_2.
I can flash the 3.0.53v8 or v9 kernels over this rom and most everything works but wifi so I am sticking with the 3.0.16virt kernel that is available with this rom. But I cannot flash any other of the CM9 or CM10 roms and get data. I have flashed them multiple times, tooled around with the vpn's got a new sim card, got a new phone (warranty), spent too much time with customer service at TMobile. Still, no dice. I am pretty happy with this ROM aside from not having DSP Manager or the ability to add it. Is it because there are still some elements of sense there like the camera? I thought it was a APN input issue but I have dialed in the same APN's as Inquisition for any other CM9 or 10 roms and nothing. Any help would be appreciated.

I know this is no help to your situation, but I've run all the available ICS and JB roms that are for the MT4GS and I have mobile data and wifi on all of them. There have been some issues where data drops occasionally, but it will reconnect in a matter of seconds. With the later kernels like r8 and r9 I had no dropouts.
I believe that Sense-based ROMS require a kernel that is built for Sense, so using a CM-based kernel (like r8 or r9) would definitely cause problems. Likewise, using a Sense-based kernel on a CM ROM would be unwise.
If you like Sense based ROMs, have you tried either the Bliss ROM from sun_dream (the XE 3.32 version, not the 3.33) or the MikXE ROM? Of the ICS Sense ROMs, I found them to be the most stable and battery-friendly right out of the box. For a CM/AOKP, the AOKP JB Milestone 1 is very stable and functional, and gets you Jelly Bean... even Google Now works well on it. CM9.1r9 is a great, very stable release, as well.
Just make sure you're doing a very thorough wipe before flashing any new ROM. Even go to Mounts and format the /system, /data, and /cache manually wouldn't hurt.
Thanks

So, I did the full wipe and flashed the newest cm nightly on my phone. No data. Did it again, full reformat et all. No data.Flashed the v9 kernel on top with no wipe. DATA! Thanks. I must have to flash things a few times for them to take. This wasn't a problem with the roms that had some "sense" to them. Weird. I've done the reformating before when I was s-on and never noticed any effect. Now I'm gonna try the CM10 you recommended. I like this phone a lot. The market is based around people buying new phones once a year at least. It's crazy. It's not fair that you can purchase a phone that 6 months latter has a totally obsolete Rom. I am so glad you responded. This makes my life a lot easier. Thanks!

It almost sounds like you're S-ON or still locked. Could you be S-OFF but Locked? You could always fastboot flash the kernel after you flash the ROM just to be sure, but if doing what you just did got the data working for you, then I wouldn't mess with it. If you do want the Jelly Bean without too many issues, I would go with the AOKP JB Milestone 1. The Paranoid Android JB ROM is also very nice, but it does require a little bit more tinkering.

When you say cm10 rom, do you mean the AOKP JB Milestone 1? When I was running it I didn't have any issues with MMS, but I use Handcent SMS as my messaging client, not the built-in client. I also use T-Mobile and the standard T-Mobile APNs worked fine. I do see that some people are having issues with the r9 kernel, maybe if you flash the r7b kernel (standard, not experimental) it will be more stable. That seems to be the kernel some people find is the best combo of performance and stability.
Yes

Sorry I should have specified. I am in the middle of My CCNA2 and Comptia+ hardware exams this week and I was writing from my phone. AOKP Milestone 1, yes. I think it is the best CM10 I have flashed for MT4gs yet. Just a bit of a battery drainer and I've got an Anker. I tried hand scent this morning. Tweeked the APN's and now know way too much about the ins and outs of this phone not to just learn to become a developer
I got the rom to send MMS but not receive without it being marked as a download. So, coupled with that and the battery drain, I decided to go straight for the r9 kernel and it's rom. Supercharged and ultimate jar patched it. Pimp my rom'd it. And it runs very well, sends and receives mms fine. My issues seem to stem from a combination of problems. Yes doing a complete wipe and manual formats and flashing the specific rom and kernel helped ingrain the rom I believe. But the main culprit is those darn APN's. I finally found alternate APN's and after going through them all in every combination, turning on and off my wifi to check the mobile data latency in terms of how long it took to come on, I have discovered that a T-Mobile Data APN named wap.voicestream.com with the mmsc set to the /mms/wapenc, the MCC:310, MNC:260, and APN protocol of IPv4, with everything else not set of unspecified, allows my phone to come and go between wifi and mobile data with no latency, just like the sense based roms did. So far no drops, but have been bunkered down studying and doing last minute work. When I leave the house in a minute I am gonna be driving around for about an hour to and from where I am going playing spotify, so that should be some kind of test. I also tried internet2.voicestream.com but it was not as consistent of a mobile data signal. They are trying their best to control all bandwidth and software so we can spend a fortune upgrading our services and buying 3 phones a year just to have a proper interface. Most phones are going to only one LTE radio soon as opposed to one that will do data and one that will do voice, effectively making the devices less expensive for them to manufacture, but not for us to buy! Hopefully there will be enough of a niche market to have qwerty hard keyboard devices that are decent released periodically.
Has gone from a well intentioned but flawed technology to a stable streaming around this corner of my city. No drops. And spotify kind of sucks in comparison to other streaming services in terms of quality and performance. I don't wanna get too excited though, ill have to wait a month until I begin to have confidence again that ill have consistent data.

What city? Are you on a T-Mobile account? I'm in Atlanta and T-Mobile data is pretty good here, and I use the standard APNs (epc.tmobile.com). I also used my phone while in China, bought a China Unicom SIM and had excellent data using their system as they use the 2100MHz frequency for HSPA+.
Dallas, TX. Its solid around here but streaming high quality in a 40 mile radius could still be spoty with the meh quality of spotify, probably a load on their servers at rush hour, coupled with the fact that I've been so use to data drops. I'm telling you, the apn fixed my problem. It seems to be a known issue on these threads. Massive data drops. There needs to be a thread compiling alternate apns for people that have that issue with cm 9 and up. Double flash, full wipes, apn config. I'm on the cm 10 unofficial now with its standard kernel. Seems solid. Better battery life for my phone. Every time I flash a kernel I get intermittent data until I change to that apn above. Like zero to occasional. But now my data is tough as nails.

no wifi!
hey guys im s-on unlocked n currently running [ROM] [01-DEC-2012][r9] CM 9.1 + bat drain fix + usb trans speed fix + other tweaks right now and not getting any wifi. i am coming from the only rom that would give me wifi (virtuous inquisition) but that rom got too heavy too fast n was done on my phone. so i switched between a few other ics roms and none of them r giving me wifi.
i dont want to go back to virtuous inquisition but i need wifi. my setting just wont slide over. any help would be appreciated. THANKS!
Have you tried "fastboot flash boot boot.img" ? Using one of the boot.img files from the CM9.1 ROM you're running? It's a necessity when changing ROMs with S-On.
The big issue with no wifi as I've experienced s-on or s-off is that the rom is not sticking. If you are s-on do not try to switch out different kernels, just flash the whole rom. Also, id try the v8 version of that rom because it seems more stable. Go into your recovery, wipe cache, wipe data, wipe delvic cache, go into mount/format and format cache, data, and system, flash rom zip, flash gapps, fastboot boot.img, then let the phone reboot and don't touch it for at least ten minutes, reboot into recovery, wipe cache, data, and delvik cache again, flash rom, fastboot boot.img, and wait again another ten minutes or so while itg reboots. Don't touch it even if the droid comes up and asks you for what language. It is still loading. This is the usual issue regarding roms not sticking. Multiple flash of the same rom over itself and not touching for ten minutes or so after flashing. If you don't know how to fastboot boot.img get hasoon 2000's mt4g all in one program. It'll instruct you to remove the boot.img from the rom and place it into one of the folders in the program and will fastboot the boot.img for you. And btw, the wire trick is real easy. I didn't do it for a year but when I did I was suprised at how easy it was. Makes flashing roms less of a headache.

When flashing a ROM with S-On it isn't actually the ROM not sticking (although that may happen in certain circumstances) but it is that With S-On (security on) the kernel doesn't get installed at all thru CWM. You HAVE to flash that independantly & seperately & LAST And ALWAYS this way thru ADB with S-On. There IS no other way. (Save perhaps pushing that to the right partition thru terminal but that is another discussion altogether).
Yeah, what he said. And if your not savy with adb get hasoon 2000s all in one and it'll do it for you.
