what would be your suggested next move for better download speeds? - HTC Inspire 4G

I read about all you guys downloading 2, 3, 4, and 5mbps. I average 1.5mbps
downloads (lets not even talk about upload speeds). The only way I see yall numbers if I am on wifi. I am in south La below New Orleans near the Gulf. I know I am not in the 4G area (yes we have 3G) but seems I should be getting better. Things I have tried and done. With all this changes and with stock phone/ROM my speeds have not changed. I am using the speedtest app for testing. I have tried different times and places etc...
Check with ATT and I am on the 4G plan
On the Gingerbeast ROM (have not tried any others)
Tried the Gingerbeast radio and ril
Tried the recommended ATT radio .06.06.30_M with recommended ril 2.2.0079HM
Tried the recommended ril for the ROSP ROM HTC-RIL 2.2.0018G with the ATT .06.06.30_M (currently running)
Also configure the APN for the recommended ATT phones (tweak the APN and added MediaNet
Well my speeds have not changes (if they did it is very minimal)
Just looking for any wisdom or suggestions as to what to try next. Maybe this is the best we can get down here also.....I dont know anyone that owns a Inspire to compare it to down here.
thanks

Call ATT and see if they're having tower issues in your area. They may be severely degraded.

If you can flash a ROM, radio and edit APN setting you can edit your build.prop. It's really easy to do with RootExplorer

Don't be intimidated because it looks all codey. Just make a backup and go for it, it's the best/fastest/easiest way to learn.

Is there an HSPUA enabler?

I heard AT&T locked the hspua feature on the inspire and will enable it in the summer or so..., i rooted/s-off mine and installed CM7 rom, does it enable the hspua too? Thanks for any help!
Some roms do and some not, i'm not familiar with cm7 but here's a link to manually editing the build prop so you can enable it manually if cm7 does not. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=982082
It's already enabled on CM7. If your upload speed is faster than 200kbps you're set

I might be wrong, but I don't believe cm7 supports 4G yet (remember it being an issue with the evo).

I had an issue where I lost hspua after messing around with some different radio flashes. Regardless of what I wiped, flashed or whatever I couldn't get it back.
As a last ditch fix I restored to stock and rooted again. This fixed the issue.

You should be able to flash basically any radio besides stock and have hsupa on any rom. I am on cm7 w/ the radio in my sig and get anywhere from 1.5- 3 Mb up constantly. And yes CM7 supports "4g" the reason it did not work on the evo is because that is real type of 4g, as to where att's 4g is merely upgraded backhaul to enhance speeds. Has something to do with the RSA keys that the evo uses to enable 4g if I'm remembering correcly. If you need any help pm me, and i could probably walk you through.
I have it back now. I think I screwed things up by flashing too many radios. All is well now

Good deal, glad to hear it.

Radio refusing to flash.

I have the right RIL and the latest version of my rom, the only thing im missing is the proper radio. Every time I try to flash this radio it says installation aborted. I have checked the md5 and redownloaded the file twice. This is very frustrating and the I only thing stopping me from accessing hspa+
Im selecting the zip from the recovery menu and it starts and then just says installation aborted. Please help.
You don't flash radio in recovery. File needs too be named exactly PD98IMG.zip, placed on the root of your sd card and flashed from hboot.
you sure you have one that is flashable? Where did you get it?

Yup. Either that or pop for XDA premium. If you spend a lot of time on XDA, quite worth it.
Nothing beats the full browser-based site in terms of functionality, but XDA app is considerably faster, obviously, for the basics, and links work in the premium version.
First of all I would like to thank each and every one of you for helping me with this, I was really starting to stress about it. I finally got the right radio flashed through hboot and then verified it in the settings. Finally! I'm so relieved.
It's too bad this killed my connection speeds.
I have the reccomended radio and matching RIL for my rom now, whereas before I didn't, and now my speeds are down to .13 download and 1.5 up. An hour ago when I had the old radio I was getting 3.5 down 2.5 up. The radio that was on my phone a bit ago was the very first radio released with the inspire. It was the radio that couldn't access HSPA+. The radio I just put on is the latest realeased radio for gingerbread. I rebooted 3 times and have the same results with each speed test. Also, when I check in about phone for network it still says HSPDA. I was under the impression that it should say HSPA when it is working properly and accessing full HSPA+.

I don't think you can make an accurate judgment based on half-an-hour's use. Give it a few days of random tests to get an overall picture of how its doing.
Personally, based on what I know about: radio in general(1); radio firmware on embedded devices(2); and personal experience, I think the radio firmware has almost no bearing on the sort of things an android user would notice. Without sophisticated equipment like spectrum analyzers, signal generators, oscilloscopes, etc. to determine the exact environment (i.e noise floor, electrostatic disturbances, etc) and a truly scientific approach to recording the results, there's no way to be certain that one anecdote is any more meaningful than another.
1. I'm a licensed Extra class radio amateur.
2. I've worked with proprietary radio firmware before and it mainly does things like calculating the spreading algorithms and handling authorization handshakes, etc. and nothing to do with increasing signal strength or quality.

I thought it was common knowledge that the Inspire was released without the ability to access hspa+ speeds. Then a few months later there was an OTA that enabled it. I thought this was the radio I just flashed.

Enabling maximum speeds / HSPA+ on the Inspire is accomplished via several things that must work together. Some people in some markets don't need every one of these things, but here is the list:
1. Radio version. I don't think you necessarily need one version of radio over another to enable HSPA+, but it doesn't hurt to have the latest stock radio 26.06.06.30. This radio should be your starting point regardless of what your ROM's recommended version is. If you want to flash to a new radio later that is perfectly fine, but you should start with 26.06.06.30 because it's known to work well on almost everything, and is the official radio that rolled out with the AT&T/HTC HSUPA update at the end of April.
2. APN config. Most ROMs do not contain the proper stock Inspire APN config and thus only have 1 APN when there should be 2. In many markets it is impossible to obtain HSPA+ speeds with this improper APN config. Check this thread for the APN speed fix.
3. Build.prop settings. Most custom ROMs already have sufficient build.prop settings to achieve fast speeds, but sometimes you can tweak out a little more speed by altering them. Check this thread for build.prop settings.
As mentioned previously, network variance can be huge. You have to test your network speed over a period of several days, at different times of the day to different locations. I cannot stress this enough. Don't just run a few tests, get an average 1.5 MB/s download speed and think to yourself, "Damn, my phone still isn't configured for HSPA+". It's quite possible that the exact same config that got you 1.5MB/s on one day will get you 7 MB/s the next day or the next week. You have to test over a sufficient period of time.
One last thing: the phone is theoretically capable of 14.4 MB/s but the AT&T network does not support anywhere near this speed yet in most locations. Fastest I've read on this forum is 7-8 down, 1.3 up.

I just finished flashing the stock at&t rom you just recommended as well as reading both of those speed posts over the past few hours. I can say that my speeds are back to where they were before flashing the radio that was reccomended for my rom.
Im very grateful that you mentioned I should continue to test over the next few days because I was about to start flashing and changing stuff until it was right. I have implemented everything I read from those 2 speed tweak threads and I will do some more testing over the next couple of days and go from there. You have been more informative than I could ask for, thank you.
Still though, in a perfect world all of these settings should be bundled in the custom rom. This is very tedious.

CM Q&A

As some of you have come from the captivate know what I did there with Rom Q&A threads. I am doing the same here. In an effort to clean up the site. All Rom related question shall from now on be posted in the proper Q&A or will be deleted on sight.
I feel like I'm posting incorrectly here but this thread says CM Q&A so if i am I sincerely apologize but here goes nothing...
I'm running Cyanogenmod 7 RC1. Before i installed CM7 i did a wipe of data and cache.
The google navigation app works for about 2 or 3 minutes then loses gps signal. I have to exit navigation then bring it up again and it will immediately get a gps fix then disconnect after another 2-3 minutes. I have really searched around for a fix and i'm not even sure which one to try.
Below are the threads that i have found that may fix the issue. I don't believe they will since the problem isn't getting a fix which it does. It it just losing the fix after a brief period of time.
If i use MapQuest it works flawlessly. It just really bothers me that i can't get a stock app to work...
Which one is the most viable? If non of the threads below will help can you politely point me in the right direction?

This is how it works for me as well. Just toggle GPS off and back on while still in the navigation app. Should come back up and stay on from that point on.
Thanks for your responses guys...I wish there was another way rather than that. I guess it's a small inconvenience for what is my favorite rom.

There is a way to quick search the phonebook with the stock CM7 dialer, but there's an extra keystroke involved. While the dialer is up on the screen, just press the search button on the bottom right of your phone. Then you can quick search through your contacts.

Very low data speeds in CM7, what gives?
I'm new to android and to rooting. I understand that CM7 does not support 4G, but I'm not even seeing 3G speeds when I have it installed. My speed test results are averaging in the 0.4 - 0.5 mbps range down, and similar or some times better up.
On ANY other rom I see better speeds. I'd be ok with similar speeds to what I saw on my Iphone 3g, but when I tether right now on CM7 it makes me long for the good ole days of dial up. Seriously, I frequently see sub 56kbps speeds.
I WANT to use CM7. I love all the tweaks and features, but the data is so slow! Any suggestions to how I could fix this and get back to my 1.5 mbps 3G speeds?
Radio: 26.06.06.30
RIL: HTC-RIL 2.2.0018G
Kernel (What ever came with the phone? Ive not changed kernels that I'm aware of)
Thanks,

Did you make sure the APN's are correct? There is a APN thread in the dev forum.. If you are in 4g area you should see faster speeds than 1.5Mb.. Iam in dallas and see 3.5Mb down 1.1Mb up.. Either way, make sure the APN settings are correct.
By chance has anyone's phone gotten laggy at random or where it'll temporarily hang/freeze in the later builds?

Something this severe hasn't happened to me yet. I might see a little sluggishness from time to time, but it doesn't cause the phone to hang or freeze.

+1 on one7dchevy's suggestion. CM7 works with HSPA+ / 4G just as well as any other ROM (I've seen speeds up to 6-7Mb/s), as long as you've got the right APN config. Link to the APN thread is in my sig - be careful though, the OP of that thread is a real jerk.
BTW the radio version you're using is just fine - and the RIL that comes with CM7 works fine with that radio.
Posted this question over in the CM forums but they seem to get alot less traffic than here. Figured I'd give it a shot.
Flashed this device a while back. Now it's randomly losing GSM signal, wifi is fine. When I attempt to scan for a network provider it just errors out.
It's a AT&T device, Inspire 4g
It's running: 7.0.3-DesireHD
baseband: 12.39.60.19P_26.06.04.06_M
RIL: HTC-RIL 2.2.0099HM (Jan 27 2011, 16:12:49)
Having to swap to and from airplane mode every few hours to maintain signal is getting old. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated as this is my daily handset and I'm missing way to many calls. I've confirmed with my gf's captivate that it's not random network outages.
I even rolled back to an old nandroid backup where this didn't happen and it continues to happen.

[Q] Best Radio for T-Mobile in California?

I'm so overwhelmed by the amount of radios I can flash and does anyone with T-Mobile in California have a suggestion for what they use? Right now my data speeds are pretty bad
Also, what is the difference between an RIL and a radio? I'm so confused!

My understading of the RIL is pretty much telling the OS how to use the radio that is installed. Hence the reason that they need to match. I was using radio 9007.19 with the .162 ril and had great speeds here in Utah(sorry i know your looking for someone in cali). But I have just last week modded the three sensations that I work on all to the stock 1.45.405 ruu so that I got all the extras that came with that firmware and I'm not running the newest radio of 9035 with its matching ril and have much better speeds and great battery life. Before I did this ruu installed about a month ago I tried this newer radio and had horrible results, slow speeds and wow talked about a battery sucker. But what every all came in that ruu(rpm.img maybe) really helped that radio in my eyes. Hope this helped a bit.
Are you on the stock rom? I've been using custom roms and my data has been much slower. I was thinking about going to the stock rom but I'm not sure if it's the custom roms that are slowing down my speeds or just the T-Mobile service in my area. I'm using the 173 RIL with the matching latest radio. I get under 1 mbps a lot of the time using the speedtest.net app.

Hence why what works for you, might not work for others and vice versa. So just download a couple of radio's and their RIL, and try each one (using the RIL that is compatible with the radio of course) and try out a few and see which one nets you better results.

Yeah, I've tried several RIL/Radio combinations with no luck. Once in a while, they will go to like 2Mbps, but standing in the same spot, I may get like 500kbps right after.

There got to be a latest radio for T-Mobile USA!
I will watch this thread closely because I am too looking to update the radio on my phone the difference is that I live on Florida.
I remember on my Nexus One updating the Radio was easier just flashing the Corean radio and Voila! Speeds close to 4G always.
While I was out, I did several speed test in the Orange County area. I got 7.272Mbps download and 1.919Mbps upload, and for the second run, I got 5.983Mbps download and 2.321Mbps upload. When I was indoors, I got 1.201Mbps download and 1.268kbps upload. I'm currently using Android Revolution HD 3.6.0 with RIL 173 and Radio 10.15.9305.02.2. My CID is T-MOB010. Hope that helps someone.

Yeah, I'm in So-Cal around the Huntington Beach/Fountain Valley/Garden Grove area. I haven't done any more speed tests since though. I'm on the 200mb data plan and the cycle just started like two days ago so I gotta ration.
thank you WTFD4V1D. im very close to garden groove so ill give this radio a try.

I also tried going back to the 169 RIL and the corresponding radio along with adjusting to these values in my build.prop file:
ro.ril.hsdpa.category=10
ro.ril.hsupa.category=6
ro.ril.hsxpa=3
There are two of these in the build.prop file and I changed both. Still using Android Revolution HD 3.6.0. I'm not sure if those speeds were because I was near a cell tower or something though since I did both of these in the same spot.

Confused about leaked GB on Infuse

From what I've seen with various ROM's -- it seems that the leaked GB on the infuse is garbage with data speeds; you need to pick a compromise between no MMS, lossy data or crappy speeds.
I'm not sure if I understand this right, with the whole APN settings, but I find this incredibly debilitating; I can't really use CM7 or Dlev if I have to give up a vital data feature!
Please clarify this, sorry I'm new from the Inspire
no the Rogers rom has crappy data on att but most att customers wont get very good data anyway. the leaks have about the same data as froyo. and miui and cm7 and the more recent custom kernels get decent speed by using initramfs mods that copy some of what is in the initramfs in the leaks.
in fact the fastest data I have recorded was 10.35mbps or so (close to my cable ISP and faster upload btw) and that was with one of the leaked Roms. the gb=slow data is not really true anymore.
Real odd, I just flashed CM7 and got really lossy data, at times it would just crap out and disappear, yet with stock I get data connection and it sticks. Any reason/fix? I really want to use CM7.

yeah data can be weird. try alternate modem.bin files. there have been new modems with each leak and one may work better than another for your area. but it is possible that for some strange reason your phone and area might just agree with the froyo kernel better. also its possible that miui doesn't have the kernel update that helps data since the thread was closed but if I remember right the changes were there before then. you might want to try flashing the kernel from cm7 just to test things.
there are 2 threads with a collection of modem files in the dev section I hope you find a combo that works for you.
So you suggest I just try different modems until I find one that works? Fun fun!
If you go into the market in CM7 you will lose the data but toggling airplane mode will bring it back.
if you use the one apn trick you should be good. i have no data issues with CM7
Im currently on a call and i took a speed test and im getting .83 down and .43 up. thats on a call.

Don't ***** if your not willing to do stasts on your own!!!!
Big dog Infuse I997 GB KJ4
its like... they want **** to work magically but don't want to work for that **** to work magically...
i for one found every modem i flashed works fine for me.
Jeez guys calm down, it was a simple question.
Doesn't the one APN trick throttle data speed?
I haven't seen my data go down in speed.

Awesome, so with CM7 the only data problem you've found was it dropping at times with the market, but that can be solved by toggling airplane and then turning it off?
works great!! Thanks

Usually that's the fix. But to avoid it. Change the one apn trick
