REALLY poor wifi signal... - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey guys, i'm not sure if this is my router's issue or an issue with the nexus s.
when im in the same room as my computer, i get full wifi signal, but when im maybe 15meters away, i get 1 or 2 bars MAX.. i'm constantly losing signal watching youtube, or just browsing the web.
btw i live in an apartment. any ideas if this is a problem with the router or with my phone?
CORRECTION:
actually about 10m

I saw another thread saying use channel 6 on router. Can't personally confirm. I have differing Wi-Fi strengths depending on the ROM I'm on.

trouble shoot with another android phone. the nexus s has the worst wifi reception out of the 3 phones in my house. (ns4g, htc evo, droid x)

unfortunately this is the only smartphone in the house...
i'm also completely stock, never rooted
my wifi channel is set to 6 and automatic :/

Wifi analyzer from the market will tell you which channels are best to use for your router

I had set my channel to 14 to get better range

Unfortunately, Nexus S wi fi just sucks

Weak wifi performance

I don't understand why the wifi reading on my ns4g is coming up significantly shorter than my wife's iPhone 4. Both phones on the same network but my ns4g is pulling 5mbs down and the iPhone is getting 10mbs down while side by side. Uploads are pretty comparable.
Granted 5mbs down is more than I really need, I was just curious as to why I would only get half the wifi download speeds.

Sigh the wifi just sucks on our phone
Yep, really poor wifi signal. Low power chip, saves battery blah blah blah...
Just can't find if this can be fixed or we should live with it
How are you testing the speeds? Apparently a lot of the tests are not accurate.
It's something I'm suffering from too I've sat next to my router and still not had full signal
Sent from my Nexus S 4G
i used speedtest.net app and linpack. consistent speed readings. the ns4g is the strangest phone i've had when it comes to data speeds. i guess the 3g/4g speeds are issues with sprint, but even wifi is kinda funny.
I get 5679/730kbps 54ms 2m from router, 3289/376kbps 12m from router in the next room. The problem is that that is as far as I can get without loosing wifi signal. I get 2 out of 3 bars 2m away from the router, 0 bars 12m away, while with my old ****ty HTC Tattoo (Click) i had 2 out of 3 bars in my backyard.

[Q] Wifi Question

Hello XDA,
Right now I have an Atrix 4G, and while I know I should be happy with it, I truly am not. The battery life is horrendous, the GPS always puts me in a city I'm not in, and many other things (and this is my 4th unit).
But...the one thing that really has me ready to jump ship is that my wifi almost NEVER works. It connects, then disconnects, then connects, and back and fourth, it is very annoying. Is this a problem with the Infuse 4G?
Nope. At least in my case I have perfect wifi signal most of the time.

Yup, once in a while it has flaked out, but all I have to do when that happens is turn wifi off then on again.
Wifi in infuse has pretty poor range but still i get around 2 bars 40ft away though 3 walls and never seen the connection drop. I even sit in my car 50ft away from the modem and get 1 bar.
I have to agree on the poor WiFi quality on the Atrix. Another big issue for me was heat. The Atrix gets extremely hot.
I ended up taking the Atrix back and getting the Infuse. I'm pretty happy with the Infuse, it's a great phone!

I have had both atrix and infuse. The wifi range is exactly the same. No connection issues however on the infuse.

I actually did have wifi issues on my infuse. Id be sitting at my pc desk with full wifi bars and it would not connect, either I had to reboot or id have to wait it out before it would connect. Also, id be at my friends house using is wifi without any issues, than when id come home id still be connected to his nexwork, id select my network but the phon would tell me its out of range, reboot. I called att and the rep dug thru notes and call logs and apparently others were having the same issue. Before he connected me to a samsung rep the att guy recommended me going into my routers settings and adding my phones mac id to my router. Once I finally spoke to the samsung guy he told me I need a new router, even tho all other wireless devices work fine in the house. So I did the Mac id bit and the phone was fine. The next day my phone received an update, not sure what it was (wifi fix perhaps) I updated but once I got home non of my other devices would connect. I went backs into router settings and changed it back to how it was and I haven't had an issue since.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA Premium App
Same problem here too!
I have had the same issues as nash2000. I can sit right next to my router, seems to have a full connection, yet not be in range. Any MMS's coming in would get stuck and stay in that "stuck" mode for days. I have replaced SIMM cards and called AT&T continually. They replaced my phone and nothing has changed.
I notice that no matter where I am - home, another state, etc - that when I with someone who also has AT&&T with an iphone that they always have more bars than I go and better wifi strength - even when we're both sitting next to my router. AT&T claims that my complaint of this is the very first they have heard - HA!
I think a lot of the wifi issues got cleared up with the update ATT pushed. @lasmonster do you have a mirocell?
What update did AT&T push for the Infuse? The Wi-Fi is horrible. Once it's connected it works fine but it usually doesn't scan well. I have to turn off Wi-Fi and turn it back on. Adding about 20 seconds to the time it takes to connect and sometimes it will say Not In Range when I'm obviously in range.

Not sure how to trick your phone into downloading it, mine just got it. I believe all the ROMs available also are built off the update (infused at least for sure)

[Q] Wi-Fi and career signal are weak!

Hi guys,
I'm a new Android user, and I got Nexus S 2 weeks ago.
It's such a great device but I found that its career and Wi-Fi signals are weak!
Although I use it as well as the iPhone, iPad, and MacBook Pro at same place، its signal is very weak comparing with them, and occasionally, it doesn't receive any signal!
what's up with it?
My room is Cyanogen 7.0.3
thanks,
What carrier are you on?
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using Tapatalk
I definitely agree with this. Having used an Epic 4G in the past, the wifi performance of the NS4G is much weaker than the Epic 4G or other wifi devices. I also have a Galaxy Tab 7 and having both in the same spot, the NS4G loses wifi signal while the Tab is still connected. When i had the Epic, i would be outside at the gate/fence and it would pick up my wifi and connect automatically, the NS4G won't pickup/connect until i'm actually in my room.
Like the phone a ton, but wifi is weak on it.

STC (Saudi Arabia). My father uses Nokia and my brother uses BlackBerry, and they don't face any problems with their phones. In addition, Wireless signal is too weak also comparing with any other phone or computer!

Also having the same problem. I'm hoping that there is a software or radio fix for this but so far I haven't seen anything.

I agree I used to have the iphone 4 and am as well new t Android. The nexus s has poor WiFi and cell signals compared as well as HORRIBLE GPS. Takes forever for it to locate me.
Both instances I used AT&T, same wifi hotspot as well as same geographical location.
I noticed connectors on the battery cover. Anntena or thermometer??

NO wifi problem here NS4G, just got 17.22Mbps down with 4.83mbps up. the signal may look weak but it still strong.
Here is a bit more info, missing from my previous post. I'm using the D720SPRKE1 baseband with stock Androis 2.3.7 on a (rooted) SPH-D720. Wifi is fine for me.

Agreed. Compared to my Epic 4G (running a Froyo ROM), the range of the WiFi and Bluetooth radios are shortened. What's interesting to me is now that my Epic 4G is running a GB ROM, the range of the WiFi and BT radios have been reduced there as well.
I'm wondering if this might be a Samsung GB driver issue?

those are megabits per second, not megabyte, right?
8 bit are 1 byte, so for wifi your numbers are not really good per se. i'd rather say kudos to down-speed of your internet-connection, up is okay-ish...
wifi g has a theoretical max of 54 mbit, n-standard up to 150 mbit. I'm sure the limiting factor in your case is your internet connection though, not the wifi.
that said, the nexus s has a weak wifi-reception (as in how good the reception has to be until a network is found), but once you're connected it's somewhat stable.

It very well could be. I just think it's interesting that my Epic 4G now has the same range as my Nexus S 4G. When my Epic was running any Froyo ROM I could easily get a decent WiFi signal 50 feet from my house outside. Now that it's running a Gingerbread ROM (like my Nexus is), I have to almost be inside to connect to my router.
this is what i think if you say they have same range...
more power = more range = more speed
lower power --> same range as more power --> lower speed
I'm also having problems with this... very low wifi signal on the nexus inside my house, but 100% strength on my (old) nokia 5800 and on the macbook :/
I think this was a power saving decision, since the wifi radio is a battery drainer and this way we have better battery duration while on wifi, but i'm not sure..
(using the latest franco.kernel, but had the same issue with the stock kernel)

[Tip] Improve WiFi performance

Hey guys, just wanted to let you know about something I discovered today.
If you're like me and have had considerably worse WiFi performance since switching to this phone, you've probably already flashed new radios and configured your routers channel to 11. These do seem to improve it a bit, but not nearly as good as this next trick.
Go into settings, then Wi-Fi, and hit the menu button and choose advanced. Select Wi-Fi frequency band and change it to 2.4 GHz only. Though I personally have a 5.0 GHz router this has improved my connection to be better than any phone I had previously. I have also selected Best Wi-Fi performance, but that was before I found this. Even without the best performance option this is considerably better.
I hope this helps!

Interesting. I never had any WiFi problems with my HOX. Also I didn't know the phone even had a 5.8Ghz radio. I guess it does. But then I don't see how setting 2.4Ghz manually (as opposed to it automatically choosing which radio to use) is going to help. So I find it weird that its helping you...
It might be because I have both a 5.0 GHz and a 2.4 GHz broadcast from the same router. Honestly I have been seeing a horrible connection from both until I made this switch.
As to why it works? It's like why switching the LTE off saves your battery. Your phone is no longer looking for a connection on a new frequency and focuses more intently on the preferred band. Just my theory. Could be wrong.

5ghz connections suck anyway (as far as distance goes)...always go with 2.4ghz if you can or you are always within close range to your router, then 5ghz works rather well.

Channel 11 is a static channel and will often have the least interference. On some routers there is a power amplifier that only works up to channel 10 so better results may occur on channel 10 for some.

Its not nonsense! Its wireless. People really need to understand wireless before trying to fix wireless issues.
You see, WiFi (Wireless Fidelity) transmits data through Radio Frequency (RF) waves. WiFi is most commonly used on unlicensed bands, because it would be a pain for every user to have to license their device before using it on a network. The most common frequency for WiFi is 2.4Ghz, and for a number of reasons. It is a fairly good frequency that offers a decent amount of spectrum. However the problem is that it is the most common. As such, everyone uses it. Cell phones, laptops, wireless APs on roofs used for businesses and WISPs, even some handheld phones, WiFi routers, etc. etc.
The more nodes that use a particular frequency, the more clouded it gets. And this holds true even if you are not connected to that particular network. You could think of it as a large backyard. You want to get from point A to point B. Under normal circumstances, its easy. But throw in a ton of crap and you'll be tripping over balls and who knows what else. In wireless terminology, the amount of junk clogging up the spectrum is called noise floor, measured in -dB. The lower the number, the higher the noise floor. This is opposite of measuring rf signal strength, where the higher the number, the weaker the signal. Still measured in -dB though.
Within a given wireless frequency band, there is a certain width to it. And this is best googled. But for 2.4Ghz, it goes from 2.400Ghz to 2.495. Inside of that band, we have channels. Which can be set at different widths (irrelevant info, as laptops/cell phones only handle 20Mhz wide channels). A spectrum analyzer (I have one) will tell you which channels are most used. My bet would be that the lower channels, like especially channel 6 would see the most use. And then other channels, not so much. So, the idea is to find a channel with minimal usage and use that.
Now, as for WiFi problems with the HTC one X, troubleshoot troubleshoot troubleshoot. Be aware it may not be a problem with the HOX. Wireless has limitations because its wireless. Things block the signal. A lot of people post about amazing speed gains from changing this or that, when truth be told, your speed is no faster than the speed behind your gateway. Most my connections, I have no problem. If I was connected to a 50Mbps fiber line, I might complain about WiFi speed. Maybe.
Those still having problems, if they cannot pin point the problem, you can try using the "best WiFi" setting. That increases WiFi performance, but at the cost of higher battery usage. Still worth a try. Also be aware that people have been complaining about hardware issues on the HOX. If I recall correctly, WiFi antenna not connected properly. Hardware issues cannot be fixed through software.
Lastly if your router can do 5.8Ghz and the HOX can also do 5.8Ghz, set it to lock on 5.8Ghz and give it a try. 5.8Ghz is a great band for fast, reliable data connections. However it does not handle interference as well. On longer distances, anything even approaching the fresnel zone and you're going to have problems.
I can confirm that when using wifi analyzer, my router's 5ghz band has lower signal strength compared to the 2.4 ghz band and the 5 ghz band gets considerably worse if I go to the next room and the wifi signal fluctuates. I did not see any improvement with the new radio also. But when I am using the 2.4 ghz band I get full bars in places where my 5ghz band would fluctuate from 0 to full bars and cut my Internet connection intermittently.
Thanks OP for the suggestions.

Yes, and this is simply due to the nature of 5.8Ghz, and how higher frequencies have less penetration power, whilst having a smaller fresnel zone. 2.4Ghz will do a lot better job burning through walls than 5.8Ghz. Because remember, technically speaking, all WiFi is Line Of Site.
I jsut got a One X+ and discovered the poor WiFi coverage. (Already posted about it in ONe X+ forum). And I used an analyzer to see that as expected 2.4 ghz is much stronger. But don't you lose bandwidth capability when you aren't using "dual band" with wireless-N dual band routers. Even so, I wouldn't care. It seems I lose connectivity briefly in areas of my house I don't with any other device. We have a 5.6Ghz wireless phone system (wasn't in use though when I have problems). But maybe the issue is as the 5.6 falls out of range, the phone is having to reconnect to the 2.4. When use SpeedTest and running it 10 times in a row walking around in a small area and even standing still, but in an area that is on the 'fringe' of 5.6 range, the phone is erratic. Drops connection, regains it with 100% strength. I think it is the switching back and forth?
Yet when I go into settings and select 2.4 only, or even 5.6 only, I can't authenticate to my router anymore!
