Hi guys,
I'm a new Android user, and I got Nexus S 2 weeks ago.
It's such a great device but I found that its career and Wi-Fi signals are weak!
Although I use it as well as the iPhone, iPad, and MacBook Pro at same placeŘ its signal is very weak comparing with them, and occasionally, it doesn't receive any signal!
what's up with it?
My room is Cyanogen 7.0.3
thanks,
What carrier are you on?

I definitely agree with this. Having used an Epic 4G in the past, the wifi performance of the NS4G is much weaker than the Epic 4G or other wifi devices. I also have a Galaxy Tab 7 and having both in the same spot, the NS4G loses wifi signal while the Tab is still connected. When i had the Epic, i would be outside at the gate/fence and it would pick up my wifi and connect automatically, the NS4G won't pickup/connect until i'm actually in my room.
Like the phone a ton, but wifi is weak on it.

STC (Saudi Arabia). My father uses Nokia and my brother uses BlackBerry, and they don't face any problems with their phones. In addition, Wireless signal is too weak also comparing with any other phone or computer!

so what can I do with it? is there any software solution that I can do?
I'm woudring whether it related to Cyanogen or not!
Also having the same problem. I'm hoping that there is a software or radio fix for this but so far I haven't seen anything.

I agree I used to have the iphone 4 and am as well new t Android. The nexus s has poor WiFi and cell signals compared as well as HORRIBLE GPS. Takes forever for it to locate me.
Both instances I used AT&T, same wifi hotspot as well as same geographical location.
I noticed connectors on the battery cover. Anntena or thermometer??

Just got the G2X today.
I'm having extremely poor to no reception at work.
All TMO phones I've used (G1, G2, N1, NS, Mytouch, Mytouch 4G, Galaxy S 4G)
in the past have random reception problems, mostly what I'd say is passable reception at work (in and out of steel buildings).
This G2X is the worst yet.
TMO service walked me thru putting a new sim in and and all.
But it didnt help.
It jumps back and forth from 2G with 2 bars to no service at all.
I didnt like the Galaxy S 4G but it got better reception.
I like this phone, vanilla and all.
Anyone else having this issue ?
If not its going back to TMO.
I got mine this morning at 10 and I have been having great reception! 4 bars with the 4G! And I came from the Samsung 4g also!

How do you know if you got 4G, I got the 4G symbol but network connection says utms and I mainly get around 3mb download on speedtest, but sometimes it goes to 7 or 8 mb down...but still says utms, I thought that was 3G. thanks!
reception
I have had great reception with the G2X. Better than both the G2 and MT4G.
fhaines
I love the phone, but the reception isn't very good in my house. The nexus s had better reception.

G2x's reception is on average about 5 to 10 dB weaker than the MT4G that its replacing but I have full coverage everywhere I go and at home I just use wifi calling so its a non-issue.
I live right by an air force base and I'm sure their signals interfere with cell reception. at&t has tons of towers out here and I had to switch because of the signal interference being so bad.

I still have the MyTouch 4G and Galaxy S 4G and they both have much better
reception than the G2X does.
I'm pretty disappointed.
I'll probably end up returning it and going back to the MyTouch 4G
(I didnt care for the Galaxy S 4G....200mb internal memory what ?).
Especially since its being reported the Sensation is hitting beginning of June.
There are like 6 or 7 "poor reception" threads in here.
Does that mean this is now definitely a known issue ?
All I got was them walking me thru putting in a new sim.
Nothing improved and the tech said oh well it must be just the area you are in.
And this was after me telling her the MyTouch 4G and the Galaxy S 4G didnt
behave in this manner !
I'm leaning towards returning the phone at this point, but I'm going to wait
a week or so and see if any software updates addressing this are forthcoming.
I had a great reception with my G2x. Had 4G throughout the day both at home and office. And on the way from between home and office too.
Unfortunately had to return it for reboot issues.
I am getting only umts. The device shows 4G but still only umts. I have installed new sim card and had it reset on the network and nothing changes. Even my Vibrant will show hspda when in 3g areas but not this phone so far. I have called CS 3 times and finally they have agreed to send out a replacement phone. I also have had random reboots ( it reboots but reboots right back up to the app you were running before the reboot.) and after speaking for only apporx. a minute the phone feels like it will burn your ear., I really want to keep this phone but if the replacement is the same than I will just send it back and wait for the SGS II or the Sensation. Really is a shame as there is so much I really like about it.
Got the phone, what gives. Connectivity sux, shows like 3 bars and 4g but the internet is slow and spotty. What gives? My HD2 runs just fine in the same spot.

I'm not getting any signal issues. My signal has been working great. I'd say return it man and get another one.
No 3G At All ! Whats Up With That ?
Definitely has an issue.
I've never seen it get 3G on this phone.
Only 2G or 4G.
I guess I will be returning the phone.
I really hate to, I like the phone.
But there is definitely something wrong with it.
My G2X has the best signal I have ever had with a T-Mobile phone. I keep a data signal in more places than I did with my Vibrant.

My signal is great, but I'm only seeing 2G or 4G. This does not surprise me, I'm in a HSPA+ area. Why would I ever see 3G?
I can't take the reception jumping from full 4G down to 2G constantly. I ordered the Nexus S and I'm not looking back. Even without support for 14.4, SAMOLED and better service will make up for it.

FWIW, I came from a Nexus S and think the reception is quite a bit better with the G2X.
If you have reception problems you can try 2 things:
1) Go into your mobile network settings and change your network mode to GSM/WCDMA if it isn't already selected. Then click on network operators and do a search. You should see T-Mobile UMTS, T-Mobile GSM and ATT GSM. Once you see the networks it finds, click on select automatically. Before leaving this menu, make sure you click on data roaming. Don't worry, you won't be charged unless your internationally roaming.
2) Swap out your SIM card.

Did all that the 1st day (4-20-11).
Finally returned the phone today after testing the data connectivity
at work today with the MyTouch 4G versus the G2X.
No problem with the MT4G but the G2X had horrible or zero internet.
I will post the results with a new phone tomorrow.
The rep said they just got in a new batch of phones.
I hope the exchange has fixed the issue.
Its mostly wifi hotspotting that its really evident.
I want the phone to work because its the snappiest phone I've ever used.
Maybe it could be the area you are in. Both of my G2x and G2 have solid 4g signal.
I don't understand why the wifi reading on my ns4g is coming up significantly shorter than my wife's iPhone 4. Both phones on the same network but my ns4g is pulling 5mbs down and the iPhone is getting 10mbs down while side by side. Uploads are pretty comparable.
Granted 5mbs down is more than I really need, I was just curious as to why I would only get half the wifi download speeds.

Sigh the wifi just sucks on our phone
Yep, really poor wifi signal. Low power chip, saves battery blah blah blah...
Just can't find if this can be fixed or we should live with it
How are you testing the speeds? Apparently a lot of the tests are not accurate.
It's something I'm suffering from too I've sat next to my router and still not had full signal
Sent from my Nexus S 4G
i used speedtest.net app and linpack. consistent speed readings. the ns4g is the strangest phone i've had when it comes to data speeds. i guess the 3g/4g speeds are issues with sprint, but even wifi is kinda funny.
I get 5679/730kbps 54ms 2m from router, 3289/376kbps 12m from router in the next room. The problem is that that is as far as I can get without loosing wifi signal. I get 2 out of 3 bars 2m away from the router, 0 bars 12m away, while with my old ****ty HTC Tattoo (Click) i had 2 out of 3 bars in my backyard.

hey guys, i'm not sure if this is my router's issue or an issue with the nexus s.
when im in the same room as my computer, i get full wifi signal, but when im maybe 15meters away, i get 1 or 2 bars MAX.. i'm constantly losing signal watching youtube, or just browsing the web.
btw i live in an apartment. any ideas if this is a problem with the router or with my phone?
CORRECTION:
actually about 10m
I saw another thread saying use channel 6 on router. Can't personally confirm. I have differing Wi-Fi strengths depending on the ROM I'm on.

trouble shoot with another android phone. the nexus s has the worst wifi reception out of the 3 phones in my house. (ns4g, htc evo, droid x)
unfortunately this is the only smartphone in the house...
i'm also completely stock, never rooted
my wifi channel is set to 6 and automatic :/
Wifi analyzer from the market will tell you which channels are best to use for your router

I had set my channel to 14 to get better range
Unfortunately, Nexus S wi fi just sucks
I have only had this phone a couple weeks, used to have an EVO, I am noticing that this phone seems like it can't pick up a strong WiFi signal.
It is pretty pathetic, honestly. Any suggestions?

NO wifi problem here NS4G, just got 17.22Mbps down with 4.83mbps up. the signal may look weak but it still strong.
Here is a bit more info, missing from my previous post. I'm using the D720SPRKE1 baseband with stock Androis 2.3.7 on a (rooted) SPH-D720. Wifi is fine for me.

basically same here
signal is weak , but speed is fast as i using it on computer with full signal
problem is , when it connects it fast , but easily lost connection and sometimes very hard to reconnect ...

Agreed. Compared to my Epic 4G (running a Froyo ROM), the range of the WiFi and Bluetooth radios are shortened. What's interesting to me is now that my Epic 4G is running a GB ROM, the range of the WiFi and BT radios have been reduced there as well.
I'm wondering if this might be a Samsung GB driver issue?

those are megabits per second, not megabyte, right?
8 bit are 1 byte, so for wifi your numbers are not really good per se. i'd rather say kudos to down-speed of your internet-connection, up is okay-ish...
wifi g has a theoretical max of 54 mbit, n-standard up to 150 mbit. I'm sure the limiting factor in your case is your internet connection though, not the wifi.
that said, the nexus s has a weak wifi-reception (as in how good the reception has to be until a network is found), but once you're connected it's somewhat stable.

It very well could be. I just think it's interesting that my Epic 4G now has the same range as my Nexus S 4G. When my Epic was running any Froyo ROM I could easily get a decent WiFi signal 50 feet from my house outside. Now that it's running a Gingerbread ROM (like my Nexus is), I have to almost be inside to connect to my router.
this is what i think if you say they have same range...
more power = more range = more speed
lower power --> same range as more power --> lower speed
I'm also having problems with this... very low wifi signal on the nexus inside my house, but 100% strength on my (old) nokia 5800 and on the macbook :/
I think this was a power saving decision, since the wifi radio is a battery drainer and this way we have better battery duration while on wifi, but i'm not sure..
(using the latest franco.kernel, but had the same issue with the stock kernel)
Ever since switched from my 4s to my skyrocket ive been having trouble recieving recption indoors and sometimes in my car with my skyrocket. In my friends house I cant even load up google. Is there anything i can do about this? or is just the phone? Im seriously thinking about switching back to the 4s becase of this problem.

Sounds like you possibly got a defective device. Have you tried to swap it out for another one at AT&T?
The only time I have seen a reception issue it has occurred on any device in the house

I when I have lte enabled on my device in my house it takes longer for calls to connect. With 4g calls connect instantaneously and data speeds are similar. Try changing your wireless network preference
