[Q] Is 2.3.7 Causing Problems for everyone? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I have a friend that has a nexus s and he's been having weird issues, he has had several replacements and done several hard resets none of which take care of the networking issue. We both work for sprint and have tried having a data refresh pulled. Esentially the phone is super sluggish and the data keeps dropping in and out. As a sprint service technician I did the usual and to me it seems that it's a 2.3.7 issue. Thoughts, opinions?

Running stock, non rooted. None of those issues are prevalent here.

only issue i noticed was gps always shows me at the same place for about a min. besides that stock has never been sluggish to me.

I feel that in my case the previous radio seem to work better. I had a few issues with network connectivity with the new radio. I'm Pete's GPA18 beta with the D720SPRKE5 Radio and that seems to work well for me.

Works fine here.

Random reboots?

First off I want to start by saying I have flashed my rom to Bamf 1.5 remix. I do not overclock my phone however I have tried limiting my clockspeed hoping to prevent a reboot. The phone did not start the random reboot until I flashed to said rom. I have tried reflashing but no improvements, any ideas?

It has happened to me but I believe it just me OCing, flashing back to the kernel that I was using before when my phone was stable and testing it out. If not, I will just go back to 1.5
Also, does anyone know how to edit the power control widgets in the pulldown? I can't find any options. Thanks.
Did you flash the new radio when you loaded up BAMF 1.5?
If so, there's your problem
Happened to me with BAMF 1.6 and leankernel 192X, but only when I set it to ondemandX thru SETCPU. Other than that I've had no reboots.

yeah its pretty common for people who flashed the new radio to have reboots. i have had some of those issues, i found that using different kernels at different clocking speeds made my phone more stable. NOTE: i am not a pro, just something i noticed.
What's really behind all the random reboots?
OK... So I've tried just about every rom on the dev thread, I purchased the TB on launch date and had it rooted as soon as Jcase posted S-off instructions... I am now on the new radio and until today, I haven't had a single random reboot. Then all of a sudden, just about an hour ago, as I'm backing out of Tapatalk, bam... Phone rebooted itself...
Now I've been reading on just about every rom thread where people have been experiencing random reboots. Some think the new radio is the cause, but some people are on the new radio and have not experienced this. Others on the old radio still get random reboots.
Others think its the rom but people have noted this issue on most If not all of the rom threads.
Others think its the kernel that's causing it, but again, there doesn't seem to be any pattern to nail it down to a single kernel. Furthermore, some of these people are not OCing, myself included.
Which leads me to the strangest part of all this. My wife also has the TB. Her phone is totally stock and is not rooted. I got it for her day after launch and for the last few weeks, her phone has also been randomly rebooting. Not constantly, mind you. Just enough to be a nuisance. She has still not updated to OTA... The only suspect to this is that this appears to have started after the 4G outage a few weeks ago... And we are in a 3G only area but there was a day or so we could only connect to 1x...
So what's really causing these random reboots? I'm no expert, never claimed to be one, but is it possible that something going on between our phones and the Verizon network is causing this?
Thoughts... Ideas...?

Great post. It's good to know even non rooted users are having reboots.
non-rooted.... Updated yesterday... and got a reboot today.

I have had a few reboots across a few different rom, radio, and kernal combos. The only thing that all my reboots have had in common was I had GPS enabled. Ive yet to see a reboot with it off. Could just be a coincidence.

stock rom, not rooted, has had multiple random reboots
I have had no random reboots, or none that I have personally experienced. I figured if my phone was randomly rebooting I would have noticed a considerable battery drain. I have not noticed that yet. I honestly think that this might be an issue for people with little to no 4g coverage. I am bothered that this has not been addressed yet by verizon as I have seen so many people complain about this.
Hopefully I dont get these either, who knows may it is just phones that are may be defective hardware wise.
Well i just wanted to drop my $.02
I am Rooted and have been just about the same time the OP has been rooted.
I USED to have reboots. I install the full RUU and had reboots i also installed just the RADIO file and had reboots. I also reverted back to stock by the RUU provided by JCase. I Then flashed 1.6 followed 1.6.3 and have not had any problems. I assume that those 2 already had the radio file in them and i didn't not have to flash anything additional. Since being on 1.6 then 1.6.3 i have experienced not 1 reboot. Unless i did it myself.
I did notice then before when i did have the reboots (when i manually flashed RUU or just the RADIO file). I had reboots 3 different ways. I would either get a reboot when my phone had been sitting next to me for a while i would notice the white screen and know it was a reboot. Also the 2 other times was backing out of TapaTalk or native browser/dolphin HD.
So i don't know if that is in a way related. I just don't have them anymore.
I noticed that whenever my phone would reboot (on the leaked radio only,) I had a weak 3g signal. I watched this happen several times. My guess would be the people who aren't having reboots are in an area where they constantly have a good signal. Can anyone else corroborate this?

This is a possibility... But if that's the case this will be the first Android device I've owned that has rebooted itself randomly due to GPS. Even the Samsung Vibrant, which had horrible GPS right out of the box, didn't reboot itself when it was turned on...
However, if this is the case, why has this only become a recent issue.. now my memory isn't so good... But I don't remember seeing much about this issue on rom threads until recently... I.e the past few weeks... Neither my wife's nor my phone randomly rebooted until just a few weeks ago, and we both have our GPS turned on everyday, all day...

I live in a strong 3G area and my phone has never re-booted itself as far as I know. I'm doing the update tomorrow and will be interested to see if the problem starts.....I hope not.

Unfortunately, I had a solid signal when my phone rebooted this afternoon. I was a stone's throw from Philadelphia on I-95. I've never had signal issues along I-95 between New York and Philadelphia. I'm running the released update.

This as well is a possibility... Although I am in an area where 3g is strong... I have seen on my and my wife's phone... Even when standing still... That the 3g icon will vanish and come back seconds later...I am in a decent sized college town, population of about 70000... I couldn't say how strong 3g actually is but its everywhere in the city limits... And most of the countryside...
I have traveled to cities with strong 4g but I didnt stand around long enough in a single place to really watch the phone to see if it was dropping data...
Thanks for the constructive input, everyone... Lets keep the corroboration going and see if we can find a pattern..

The only time I had reboot was on the leaked ruu which is now the OTA.
Once I went to BAMF 1.5 with new radio and new base no reboot. About a week ago I flashed back to stock radio just to compare after being on the new one for a while. I see nothing different between them really.

2.3.3 update buggy?!?!?

Guys,
is it just me or is the 2.3.3 update for our g2x glitchy as hell! My phone seems to be dropping more calls(never dropped calls on 2.2), restarting randomly (didn't used to do that on 2.2 either), freezing and GPS seems sketchy. I have had to pull my battery about 4x more on 2.3.3 than i ever did on 2.2. If you guys are experiencing the same type of issues please comment.
I did the update via lg update tool and NOT ota.
Thanks
Have you performed a Factory Reset? It's advisable to do that after an update.
I did. Was thinking about doing it again but I don't want to loose a bunch of my saved game data bc my sd cars is not being read on my phone.

Here. I'm a big supporter of the G2X, but now it's shutting off and requiring a battery pull to reboot. And it's happening a lot. The GPS was flaky in 2.2 and still is now.
It's really damn frustrating. Especially the shut downs since there's no way to really tell, it just stops working. Wonder if it has anything to do with the 4G issues Tmo has been having recently, seems doubtful though.

g2x problems

Everybody seems to have some problems with the phone. I was wondering what all the common problems with the phone are and also whether rooting fixes the problems or not.
Yes! And no!
Well, my first G2x had problems... It kept shutting off by itself, so I got it replaced. The past 2 replacements have been really good, no problems whatsoever. I shipped my 2nd one back because it came with part of the body scratched. The gingerbread update didn't really do anything for me, other then the updated baseband.
Reboots, shutdowns, over heating are all based on the device itself. Some have it, some don't.
Also, screen bleeding isn't THAT bad.
And CM7 is amazing, so why not root?
So far, the only problem I've had was that the LG updating tool soft bricked my phone. But, at least that updated the baseband. I've not seen any random reboots at all in the month that I've had the phone. Aside from the FFC camera issues that are hopefully still being worked on, this thing has been pretty good.
I bought a mint, second hand G2X and the only problem I had was with the flakey LG updater. Once I got it updated (within 48 hours of receiving it) it has been nothing but stellar. Maybe I am lucky but remember, happy people don't post much to forums such as this. But people with problems can be very vocal. That doesn't downplay the problems to those who experience them, and they have my sympathies, but I would say the majority of G2Xs out there are performing as they should. This is my fifth Android phone (last one a Nexus One which my wife now has). I am using it unlocked ($3.00 unlock code off eBay) in Thailand with 3G service on 2100 and and I couldn't be happier unless the phone had been free. By the way, I am using it stock GB 2.3.3. For now, I see no reason to root it until an exploit has been discovered so I can root it without flashing clockwork mod. The NVFlasher process kind of concerns me, and I am no noob when it comes to flashing devices.
I'm still getting reboots and freezes even after the update. I'm on my 3rd replacement. Also, still takes forever for the gps to lock. Love the phone... when it works.

Have you tried running the phone clean without apps? Then add apps back one at a time, run for a while, and then add another one? Lockups and freezes are usually errant apps, and not the hardware's fault. My GPS locked from a cold start in 5 seconds.

[Q] Connectivity problem, all roms?

Been using custom roms on my Inspire 4g since about March with no serious issues till this week. Sometime around wednesday, my connection to my google account, the connection to talk, market, gmail, etc. Seems to be dropping out and locking up my 4g connection for a minute or two. This is really annoying. I have tried numerous different radio and rom combinations as well as going to the store and getting a new phone. The only thing that keeps it up and running is if I roll back to stock. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Have recently tested Absolution, CM7, Android Revolution, and TalonRom with recommended radios per developer instruction to no avail. But am up and running fine with roll back to att gingerbread update via hack kit...
Any suggestions?
I was experiencing loss of background data on both my inspire and my atrix with stock gingerbread, until just recently. The only conclusion I came to was that ATT had a problem, at least in my area, with background data staying connected on 4G phones running gingerbread, except on wifi. About a week and a half ago, I noticed that the problem had mysteriously resolved itself, and I was having no more issues with push to email and other apps. I can only assume it was something they fixed with a network solution. Perhaps this fix has caused a problem with the roms you're using. I know that numerous calls to customer service failed to produce an answer for my issues, it seemed either no one could figure it out, or it was a known issue that they weren't acknowledging.

Yes, similar to me. Thanks for the reply. I'll give a Rom a try over the weekend and see if the problem has rectified itself.

Anybody still having data issues?

I've been using my Rogers HOX ever since it came out but always had random data drops. Tried all kinds of radios (with or without RIL) and all kinds of roms and the issue is still there. Losing data is not the biggest issue but it also drops the battery real quick because it keeps trying to connect.
Anybody ever find a solution to this?
I'm using the HOX on Straight Talk and lately I have noticed that when I have WiFi on for a while, assuming it stays connected, I lose mobile data. The only thing that bring it back is toggling airplane mode or rebooting the phone.
I am on Jellybean, and I am not sure if the issue was present in the stock ROM's.
Yep still having the same problem on AT&T with every combination of Kernel/ROM/Radio you can think of. I can also say that it isn't a "rooted only" problem because a coworker is having the same issues on 100% stock software. There's always that ONE THING that keeps my phone experiences from being perfect. Grrrrrrrr........

Stock 2.20 on Straight Talk. Have to toggle Airplane occasionally. Especially in North Little Rock. ::shrugs::
OP, have you restored your stock setup to see if the issue persists? Basic question, but for the sake of a starting point.
After so long, finaly found the problem. I don't know if it'll be the same for everyone but the problem was Swiftkey keyboard. The moment I uninstalled it, the problem did not reoccur.
I have the same problem and I can assure you its not the phone, I have used many android phones, iPhones, and regular phones on rogers 3G network and they all have the data drops in general like dropping to 1 bar and no service once and while.
You might want to switch your network to wcdma/gsm instead of wcdma/gsm/LTE. If you dont have the correct APN for the rogers lte network it will keep searching for the lte nrtwork causing the data drop. As soon as I turned my lte toggle off the network stopped dropping randomly though I still get those random data drops caused by the network

We had this issue with the rezound, it actually occurred because you flashed different radios.
You had to flash a ruu or a modified one without the system image. See my SIG
So try flashing a ruu, this doesn't explain someone with a stock phone having issues but I bet that's just tower issues
I don't have any of these issues

Tried all of the listed solutions and nothing worked. I know it's not the network because I don't have the problem with my Note II. Swiftkey was the issue for me, once removed, the issue never reoccurred.

Wow, you might be onto something here. I just installed SwiftKey last night and immediately started having issues. Data has been off-and-on with different versions of different ROMs, and never suspected that my issues may lie within an app that I was using. I was mucking about with radio ROMs and a million other settings, never realizing that SwiftKey was installed right around the time I started having issues on each ROM.
I'm going to jump back to CM10 this evening and see if this was my issue.
THANK YOU in advance! (Thanks button has been hit!) Nice work!
You gotta be sh***ing me! After all this time scouring xda and numerous other sites.starting my own tread it was SwiftKey all along? Wtf? I did a thousand different things. Nothing worked, took off Swiftkey, bam, flawless. I've got a T-mobile GS3 incase anyway was wondering, no, apparently it's not just with htc or AT&T/Rodgers. Weird though cuz my wife has a AT&T GS3 with Swiftkey and has no issues whatsoever... Did you dl your version from the playstore or from a 3rd party? Thanks a million for posting your solution. This was absolutely killing me. God do I hate this stock keyboard though...
