[q]one click 1/2 root - Samsung Infuse 4G

i just got my warranty refurb in the mail today.
I used the superoneclick method to root
It worked...almost.
Superuser installed, but nothing gets granted permission...
Am i stuck in 1/2 root limbo?

Go into download mode and odin community kernel v8 (assuming you're on froyo), it will root the rom.

Have you rebooted the phone since then? Thats usually all it takes for me whenever I flash back to stock and root..

yes i rebooted. I can browse the root directory, but cant change permissions, r/o or overwrite in the sytem/bin to get modded3e working.

did you reboot your phone after going through the oneclick process?

Just thought I'd try and point out the obvious first lol community kernel that sucker

Just ran it through odin...taking FOREVER to finish up, but I hear it working in that sexy metalic voice that i have grown to love over several devices.

community kernel didnt work.
I still cannot change r/o to r/w or rename in system/bin
edit; failed to mention there was a disclaimer before i was able to go into download mode...first time ive seen it.

Well she can be a cruel one at times I guess. The disclaimer was added a couple months or so ago, it's normal. I've never had this issue, but I'm no expert so the only thing I can think of is odin back to stock/root+3e instead of using superoneclick
edit: before that you could try "forgetting" root explorer in the superuser app then restart root explorer and let it request permissions again.

I just realized that community kernel flashes recovery, so i dont need a modded3e to flash CWM, its already in it....running S7, ill see if root explorer is workin'

forget/restart worked...***smacks self in forehead***

Very nice, its usually a facepalm type of fix lol and enjoy S7, I've been running it for a week or so with Infusion 1.1 kernel and absolutely love it.

The disclaimer you noticed in Download mode is because you have the updated bootloader (UCKH1), you'll keep seeing it everytime you go into download mode from now.

Evo Shift Root Exploit and Development Thread

Please place all of your discussions about obtaining root on the Evo Shift here.
Temp root:Temporary root can be acheived a number of ways on the shift the easiest being either z4root app or the visionary plus root app.
Z4root:
download here and install as you would any other apk
open the app and hit temporary root
let it run till you are notified of its success
you now have temporary root!!
*Note you have to reapply z4 each time you reboot your phone
Visionary:
full instructions and the link to visionary can be found here. http://android.modaco.com/content/h...m/320722/19-nov-r14-visionary-one-click-root/
IMPORTANT NOTE!
PLEASE DO NOT ACCEPT ANY OTA UPDATES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
they patched the root exploit on the desire z when they updated you can most definitely expect them to do the same for the shift so please for that sake of everybody being able to get proper root do not accept any updates unless further notified!!!
unless you just dont care about root that is.....
so far, we got a temporary root.
No point in trying unrevoked as it scans for the device name and shows
"sorry, the device 'speedy' is not suppored" (paraphrasing)
wish i knew alittle more about this.
You can get to hboot by Holding down the vol down while powering on
Also in a previous thread bubby323 requested a dump of /system and dnalevelc obliged:
* http://www.digglesworth.net/evoshift/system.7z
In another forum (androidcentral) someone noted that an app called VISIONary works to auto temp-root the Shift upon boot.
* http://android.modaco.com/content/h...m/320722/19-nov-r14-visionary-one-click-root/
Edit: Also there's code to temp root the G2 using a different exploit below. I haven't attempted to run it on my Shift. Possibly not relevant since it has a newer version but could be if an update is pushed to the Shift:
* https://github.com/tmzt/g2root-kmod/tree/scotty2/scotty2/psneuter
got the shift today. MAN this thing is fast! i'd love to see unrevoked release a small update that supports the shift. otherwise i can do it the long way but i can't wait to see the scores once i get a custom ROM on it.
Visonary does work, I turned on temproot on boot and then i pressed temproot now and it rebooted the phone. The phone was either taking its time or got stuck on the 4G for 2-3 mins so I pulled the battery and started the phone up again. I installed connectbot and typed su and got a #. Tried the reboot command and it wouldn't let me so I went into root explorer and it prompted the su app, gave it permission and started hacking away at bloatware..... no luck, it still came back from the grave :\
I successfully Temp rooted with z4root (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953) and I couldnt get the download off the market so I just went to 4shared.com and searched z4root and picked up 1.3.0 which is the latest version....
It worked great and I used Titanium back up and a screen shot app that both needed root.
does anyone think the rageagainstthecage exploit will work on this? i assume people are working on it? cause if it does, that means unrevoked3 could possibly release a new version with shift support, right? since unrevoked is just an automated rageagainstthecage, right?
edit: i mean, for permanent root, S-OFF.

yes, the rage exploit is what works and is what z4root uses. However I couldn't get the actual binary to work from the CLI using adb.
Just curious--with this temp root, will the wireless tether app work? At least until the phone is restarted. I use that app quite a bit with my Hero, to get on the sites blocked at work on my ipad

Yes we finally got a forum
But on to the good stuff and not so good stuff
Even though we only have temp root partitions on the shift can be flashed using dd I won't go into exactly how to do it till I get home because the commands have to be EXACT!!!! Or u risk bricking your phone... I've had to ruu a couple times now
O btw the ruu that was previously leaked appears to be exactly what was released on the shift.

[RECOVERY] Modified 3e Recovery

Dani897 has already made a discussion of this, but I'm moving this information over as an official post in the Infuse 4G section as well.
This is from existz/untermensch's thread. I take no credit. See here for more info http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=909213
Making this modification will allow you to flash un-signed .zip files due to signature verification being turned off. (3e requires root)
* Download and extract the .zip
* Use a terminal emulator or ADB Shell and mount system as read/write.
* For backup purposes, use adb or root explorer to rename the current recovery file in /system/bin to recovery.orig
* Use a file manager (Root Explorer) and copy the new recovery file to /system/bin
* Reboot and your 3e (Froyo stock) recovery will no longer require signature checking.
You can now use this recovery or use the CWM from Captivate (posted in another thread here).
I am not responsible if this bricks your phone. This is easy cheese...just follow these steps.

3e Recovery w/o signature verification

Yes. it is working on mine right now.
i already tested this days ago and cwm
except using truselos super easy batch script to make it even more easy for people to use.

still there is disbelief. yes people it works! im not sure what trouble people are having flahsing roms but cwm and 3e can flash .zip files just fine. i expected to see some flashable mods and themes by now. i have successfully flashed files for testing purposes and im not too advanced of a user. i planed to post some things like a market fix and such but i have been disrtacted.

Dani, i completely agree. If you notice, I made mention of your testing at the top of the article.
Now that there is a dedicated thread, its much more likely to be realized that this works FINE. I think once I get a tester for the Odin package I slapped together to get us back to stock in case we brick, and get it successfully setup, i'll put a thread out and we can REALLY get to work on some ROMs.
So far, this phone's software is nearly identical to the Captivate, meaning we will just need to port from the Captivate and we will have a mass of ROMs in no time!

as soon as we get some kernel dev on this thing i agree. porting will be easy. thanks for the write ups too. are you planning to get a second phone? i would test if i had two of them. my captivate will go to my brother, if it weren't for that id have probably bricked it and begged some people to try making new odin packages for me to fix it.
i understand that after a brick the user hates not having the phone and may be very tempted to return it but it is helpful to everyone to try all you can to recover it. if mine bricks im using the insureance plan and saying it was stolen, then i will have a dedicated test phone.
I have an Atrix as well, but would prefer someone who may have already bricked to try this package that i wrote up this morning.
I dont mind someone wanting to swap.their phone...but i literally need about an hour or two of time with the brick's user and its very likely that we will have working Odin....and then you and i...as well as others... can do kernel and rom deving nearly immediately. We have source already, so we only need to test this safety net . PM me if you find someone who is bricked or is willing to test!!

I have a bricked Infuse im not sure what caused the crash. I was running stock rooted by the super one click method and was uninstalling an app when it went all black except the bottom keys. Doesnt do much of anything else now. I attempted an odin fix someone suggested to no avail. I can get into download mode still but nothing else. Id be willing to try anything to unbrick it .
it's working for me, I unzipped, put the file in my dropbox, downloaded the file on phone from dropbox, used root explorer to mount, (I'm already rooted) copied the file, went to system/bin, renamed the original, then pasted the new file, rebooted, flashed CWM to captivate, and rebooted into recovery, and it works. I still have my HTC Inspire, i'm on a 30 day run here to see if i like the infuse. So far it's the best GPS i've had, and i've had a lot of phones. I hate to think I spent 600 bucks on a another captivate. I had that phone as well, but so far i really like it.

dont do that. you dont want the captivate param.ifs on here. you may loose download mode if the boot parameters get messed up. especially dont flash anything with bootloaders, that means no one click nad no 3-button fix roms. this may be similar to the galaxy s but there are atleast a few differences in hardware layout that would make that a bad idea. for instance this can run gps and camera during phone calls. the sgs cant so the way things comunicate on the board may be differet, it may also just be differences in the kernel or framework but we cant be sure.

Sweet! So the dump was good then it sounds like. So just to sum it all up, odin the pda tar and it restores and wipes EVERYTHING!
Woops! AND DEODEXED!!?!?
I'm pretty new to all of this, but here is how I did it. Make sure you have busybox installed!
Extract the "recovery" file to your phone's internal SD card.
On your phone, go into your terminal emulator.
Type in "su" and press enter.
Type in "cd /sdcard" and press enter.
Type in "mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/stl9 /system"
Type in "cp -f recovery /system/bin" and press enter.
Reboot your phone.
Maybe this will help someone. Maybe it's not even the right way to do this, and my phone will soon explode. I'm a pretty big noob with this, so someone let me know.
PS: If you brick your phone, it isn't my fault.

2. What thing will I use Terminal emulator or ADB SHELL to make it read/write is that 2 an Android apps I'm lost here. I am trying to be careful, I searched and found too much post and way different doing this. So now I am confuse.

I came from an iphone as well, about 2 weeks ago. I used the method posted in my previous reply. It worked for me, and has been doing fine so far. One thing you must do is make sure busybox is installed before you try it though. If you dont have busybox installed, none of the commands will work. Then just download "Terminal Emulator" from the market, and use that to give commands.

Sounds like a corrupt download. Redownload and make sure you push the recovery to the right place and the update.zip is at the root of your SDcard.
Also please keep all questions in the "general" section.

Yupper.....signature verification errors are always 1 of 2 things:
1) not properly signed
2) corrupt download
Just for future reference.

Thank for the fast reply! I downloaded the zip 3 times already lol, and i know i have root because i used rage to exploit and i've overwritten the recovery in /system/bin with superuser permission using root explorer as explained in the thread... would it make a difference if i pushed it via adb? i was unable to push due to adb recognizing as read only so i opted for the root explorer.
Push the recovery?
sent from the pits of hell (from an sgs4g)
"Recovery" as in the binary modification required for cwm is what I meant, not cwm itself
If you want to push it you need to be in root in adb. Should make a difference though. I did it with root explorer.
sent from the pits of hell (from an sgs4g)
That's what i thought.... hmmmm and i did have my shell root on but i was still unable to push files, but still it shouldnt have mattered what method i chose to overwrite the binary with, as long as it was successful (supposedly)

no. i'm talking about the 'Mount R/W' button on Root Explorer. That's what lets you replace the recovery that's already in your system/bin/ with the one that drhonk posted - or you get 'permisson denied' error.

I had CWM (Krylon’s Version) working in a previous install of KD1 from Kies upgrade. Then I hosed my upgrade to BFrost ROM. I have Odened back to Whawks KD1 this the second time just in case it did not take on the first try. Both times I cannot get CWM to go in recovery. I have replaced system/bin/ recovery from a fresh download and placed update.zip on the root of Ext SD. I know recovery was over written properly because the date changed and Root explorer did not error out. I even restarted the phone 3 times to make sure it set. When I go to recovery and select ‘Reinstall Packages” I’m getting :
E: Can’t Mount /Dev/Block/mmcblk0p1
E: Can’t Mount SDCARD:Update.zip
It makes it sound like Recovery file is not taking. I did not have this problem with my original KD1 install before I hosed the system. Any thoughts?? I’ve tried many times with same result.

I'm thinking it's a rights issue. This Rom has given me a couple FC's. One of them with SU so I may have a flaky SU. What's weard is that I know I changed the recovery file. That was the error I was getting when I frist tried installing it last month until I replaced the Recovery file.

I've lost root access and can't figure out how to get it back. I've been searching the forum but can't quite seem to find what I need. I went through the process for rooting and no good result. I thought maybe I should just do a recovery back to 2.3.6 in CWM and it says the MD5 mismatch. I thought I had a solid backup for my original phone all this time. I restored it once through ROM manager and it worked great. I did a factory reset and went through the rooting process again and still nothing.
What my goal is, is to flash to a ROM that people are liking and that performs well. Was going to try SKYICS 4.2E, but I don't think I should attempt anything until I figure out how to go to a backup consistently. I could back up what I have now, which gives me a working phone, but I don't really like it. Most of my apps don't work correctly on it. What I really don't want to do is go forward again and really have it jacked up and not be able to go to a previous backup.
Where should I start? I'm guessing getting root access again. I'm assuming I won't be able to flash another ROM until I get this.
Thanks for the help!
I was having that problem too, I used this script "su_ics_v3.1_updated_wraithdu_installer" also install and run busybox if you haven't already or just flash an insecure kernel (make sure its right for your rom)

Okay funny guy... What was my first line again??? lol
I don't even know how to get back to stock. I can do that even if I don't have root access? I'm just trying to learn the mechanics of all this. Learn what does what... CWM is a means to write to the phone from boot. Can install different ROMs and parts of ROMS, ie. lock screens... Then there's kernels that operate the hardware that have to be compatible with the ROM. People talk about way more than I can comprehend at this point; it's one step at a time for learning.
So---first step is what? Read for hours? I don't understand what I'm reading. haha

What was the very first line in my post? lol
I'm not a programmer, but have taken some Java classes.
I don't know how to use scripts at all. In my mind, I can't do anything until I get root access. I'm not sure what the MD5 mismatch means either. I'm definitely reading things, but it seems that either I'm not understanding or that it's a tangent and not really related to what I'm trying to do...
You don't need root access. All you need is cwm to flash roms, kernels and radios

I'm starting to figure that out. This stuff isn't very simple. It seems like it is, but for some reason it's just not. It's like a tractor pull. The more I learn the harder it gets to learn more because the crap gets too deep!

read the n00b posts and stickies, its really not that hard, all roms r rooted..meaning u dont have to root, u can do root ur self for stock firmware, the hard part(not really hard) is flashing cwm(clockworkmod recovery) via odin, once u do that flash a rom according to the rom u want to use, read this on howto root and flash cwm using odin http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1340526
to go back to stock is very easy also via odin, read this link on howto http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1652398
once u find a rom read all about that rom on how to flash it and any trouble shooting
clockworkmod recovery replaces the stock recovery so u can do wonderful things to our phones, it's this application that installs(flashes) the roms
Thanks for the info... I installed another ROM that I liked better, SKYICS without the root. I wanted to tweek something else and I cannot do it unless I get root access. Using Odin is pretty easy like you said and CW recovery. The first link you posted is the one I originally followed and it was rooted. I went through the process again and no root. Titanium just says sorry I don't have permission. I did a factory reset and tried to root again and nothing. I'm not sure where to go from here to get the root back....
If you flash a custom ROM they are already rooted

I don't have root access. I did have it, but lost it when I installed ICS 4.0.4.
Titanium is saying it can't do anything... I just checked and now it's working. I didn't change anything. That's weird. It asked me for permission and is now in the superuser list. I couldn't get anything to do that for a few days. I'll just have to say Okay and move on. lol

thats why i said when u use a rom "once u find a rom read all about that rom on how to flash it and any trouble shooting", its usually a bad flash, if reflashing doesnt work then redownload the rom and again and flash
u could of flashed superuser, but the problem was the rom didnt install properly......good u got it solved

Can you be more specific on rooting 4.0.4? I didn't like SKY ICS and installed Embryo. It's much faster than the other, but now I don't have root again. I don't know how I got root access to SKY ICS, because when I asked I didn't have root, but 2 days later I suddenly had the access and did nothing.
I'm browsing around trying to find how people root 4.0.4...

That's exactly what I did and it's not working. I'm using CWM touch and tried 2 different superuser files I've found and nothing. BusyBox won't install because it says it doesn't have permission and I can't mount the drive in the phone with a file explorer because it's not rooted.
I read somewhere that I may need to install an "insecure kernel", or maybe a ROM that is already rooted? I can't figure those things out....
I've even started all over and flashed the UCLE2 again, cleared all data. then installed Embryo, CWM then superuser. No luck. I'm at a loss here.
Update: I have tried these superuser files.
Superuser, Superuser-3.0.7-d-signed and Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed. The last one gave me root access for 4.0.4. I'll attach the file for others.

This superuser zip gave root access where other versions did not for 4.0.4.

...which is why we're focused on the one method with its 3 or 4 steps we linked. [Confession] My bad, I forgot to mention as is often covered in the threads - CWM flashing the zip took me a few (4) retries. I only backed up as far as 'select update from sdcard' for each retry, all within the same recovery session. Maybe this will help?

It wasn't the steps ther were wrong. It was superuser that was wrong. I tried and tried with 2 different ones and nothing. Then I found another version that worked on the first attempt. The versions I tried first worked on 2.3.5, but not on 4.0.4.
I'm attaching the one I found that worked the first time. I tried the others about 20 times each and nothing, but they worked before. I haven't read anywhere that there are different versions of superuser that only root certain builds. I found it out the hard way.
If i can remember "SOME" superuser zips need to be flashed a few times before they flash successfully.

Thanks. I have read that, and that it works sometimes when it says it fails. The problem was that there are a few versions of superuser. I had two that worked on previous versions of android, like 2.3.6, but they won't work on 4.0.4. I found a different one named. "Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed" that worked first time. I tried the others more than enough. They don't work on 4.0.4. It's funny no one has mentioned this before.
Let's be clear.
I am glad you reached this goal CodeRed. Enjoy!

Yes, but there was only one version in the [GUIDE]{ROOT}How To Root The ICS Leak.

I had the older zip too, but it was all properly instructed in our [Dev] thread. Copperhed posted 'This will root 2.3.5 or 2.3.6' for an earlier Superuser.zip last November, linked in InSaiyanone's excellent all-in-one guide.
Needing to root 4.0.4 would lead us to the next stickie, where projeqht linked
Starskyrob's 'Step 2: Flash Attached zip from recovery.' in his [GUIDE]{ROOT}How To Root The ICS Leak, posted March 28th, referring to the zip you and I succeeded with. I think anyone reading the stickies should find the same guidance.

Okay, So I just rooted and unlocked the bootloader on my Verizon Galaxy S III and tried to flash Cyanogenmod 10 (the latest on on rom manager) and its now stuck on the boot animation. I created a backup before I did this through rommanager but when I try to utilize it, it says the file is empty. HELP PLEASE!! :crying:
Rom Manager strikes again. lol Odin back to stock and start over.

You should always be sure to check the total size of the backup file before continuing with low level flashing. With the SGS III CWM has been notorious for not working properly with recovery processes. I switched over to TWRP after my dilemma with CWM.
So yeah, ODIN back to stock and start over.
Be thankful you only have a bootloop and not a total brick.

Well I ended up reflashing the stock rom last night then tried to unlock bootloader again and when I started the ez unlock app it said my phone didnt have root access. So I rooted again the same way I did the first time and now when I try to launch the app it just sits there with a white screen. So then I downloaded a rootchecker app from the market and it says I dont have root access which is probably why the EZ_Unlock app isnt working properly. Thoughts?

That worked! So now that I've pretty much back to step one, is there anything I should watch out for while trying to flash another ROM? Maybe any ROM suggestions? Thanks
Just flash the ROM yourself in recovery, don't count on RM.

Ill for sure keep that in mind.
Once you get on CM10 their built in updater works pretty well. I haven't heard anyone complain except for the fact it doesn't do an autobackup for you, it just dirty flashes it.
