I'm just starting to learn how to do all this...
I have CWM 5.8.4.0 installed, UCLD2 and Superuser 3.0.7
I've lost root access and can't figure out how to get it back. I've been searching the forum but can't quite seem to find what I need. I went through the process for rooting and no good result. I thought maybe I should just do a recovery back to 2.3.6 in CWM and it says the MD5 mismatch. I thought I had a solid backup for my original phone all this time. I restored it once through ROM manager and it worked great. I did a factory reset and went through the rooting process again and still nothing.
What my goal is, is to flash to a ROM that people are liking and that performs well. Was going to try SKYICS 4.2E, but I don't think I should attempt anything until I figure out how to go to a backup consistently. I could back up what I have now, which gives me a working phone, but I don't really like it. Most of my apps don't work correctly on it. What I really don't want to do is go forward again and really have it jacked up and not be able to go to a previous backup.
Where should I start? I'm guessing getting root access again. I'm assuming I won't be able to flash another ROM until I get this.
Thanks for the help!
I was having that problem too, I used this script "su_ics_v3.1_updated_wraithdu_installer" also install and run busybox if you haven't already or just flash an insecure kernel (make sure its right for your rom)

Okay funny guy... What was my first line again??? lol
I don't even know how to get back to stock. I can do that even if I don't have root access? I'm just trying to learn the mechanics of all this. Learn what does what... CWM is a means to write to the phone from boot. Can install different ROMs and parts of ROMS, ie. lock screens... Then there's kernels that operate the hardware that have to be compatible with the ROM. People talk about way more than I can comprehend at this point; it's one step at a time for learning.
So---first step is what? Read for hours? I don't understand what I'm reading. haha

What was the very first line in my post? lol
I'm not a programmer, but have taken some Java classes.
I don't know how to use scripts at all. In my mind, I can't do anything until I get root access. I'm not sure what the MD5 mismatch means either. I'm definitely reading things, but it seems that either I'm not understanding or that it's a tangent and not really related to what I'm trying to do...
You don't need root access. All you need is cwm to flash roms, kernels and radios

I'm starting to figure that out. This stuff isn't very simple. It seems like it is, but for some reason it's just not. It's like a tractor pull. The more I learn the harder it gets to learn more because the crap gets too deep!

read the n00b posts and stickies, its really not that hard, all roms r rooted..meaning u dont have to root, u can do root ur self for stock firmware, the hard part(not really hard) is flashing cwm(clockworkmod recovery) via odin, once u do that flash a rom according to the rom u want to use, read this on howto root and flash cwm using odin http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1340526
to go back to stock is very easy also via odin, read this link on howto http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1652398
once u find a rom read all about that rom on how to flash it and any trouble shooting
clockworkmod recovery replaces the stock recovery so u can do wonderful things to our phones, it's this application that installs(flashes) the roms
Thanks for the info... I installed another ROM that I liked better, SKYICS without the root. I wanted to tweek something else and I cannot do it unless I get root access. Using Odin is pretty easy like you said and CW recovery. The first link you posted is the one I originally followed and it was rooted. I went through the process again and no root. Titanium just says sorry I don't have permission. I did a factory reset and tried to root again and nothing. I'm not sure where to go from here to get the root back....
If you flash a custom ROM they are already rooted

I don't have root access. I did have it, but lost it when I installed ICS 4.0.4.
Titanium is saying it can't do anything... I just checked and now it's working. I didn't change anything. That's weird. It asked me for permission and is now in the superuser list. I couldn't get anything to do that for a few days. I'll just have to say Okay and move on. lol

thats why i said when u use a rom "once u find a rom read all about that rom on how to flash it and any trouble shooting", its usually a bad flash, if reflashing doesnt work then redownload the rom and again and flash
u could of flashed superuser, but the problem was the rom didnt install properly......good u got it solved

Can you be more specific on rooting 4.0.4? I didn't like SKY ICS and installed Embryo. It's much faster than the other, but now I don't have root again. I don't know how I got root access to SKY ICS, because when I asked I didn't have root, but 2 days later I suddenly had the access and did nothing.
I'm browsing around trying to find how people root 4.0.4...

That's exactly what I did and it's not working. I'm using CWM touch and tried 2 different superuser files I've found and nothing. BusyBox won't install because it says it doesn't have permission and I can't mount the drive in the phone with a file explorer because it's not rooted.
I read somewhere that I may need to install an "insecure kernel", or maybe a ROM that is already rooted? I can't figure those things out....
I've even started all over and flashed the UCLE2 again, cleared all data. then installed Embryo, CWM then superuser. No luck. I'm at a loss here.
Update: I have tried these superuser files.
Superuser, Superuser-3.0.7-d-signed and Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed. The last one gave me root access for 4.0.4. I'll attach the file for others.

...which is why we're focused on the one method with its 3 or 4 steps we linked. [Confession] My bad, I forgot to mention as is often covered in the threads - CWM flashing the zip took me a few (4) retries. I only backed up as far as 'select update from sdcard' for each retry, all within the same recovery session. Maybe this will help?

It wasn't the steps ther were wrong. It was superuser that was wrong. I tried and tried with 2 different ones and nothing. Then I found another version that worked on the first attempt. The versions I tried first worked on 2.3.5, but not on 4.0.4.
I'm attaching the one I found that worked the first time. I tried the others about 20 times each and nothing, but they worked before. I haven't read anywhere that there are different versions of superuser that only root certain builds. I found it out the hard way.
If i can remember "SOME" superuser zips need to be flashed a few times before they flash successfully.

Thanks. I have read that, and that it works sometimes when it says it fails. The problem was that there are a few versions of superuser. I had two that worked on previous versions of android, like 2.3.6, but they won't work on 4.0.4. I found a different one named. "Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed" that worked first time. I tried the others more than enough. They don't work on 4.0.4. It's funny no one has mentioned this before.
Let's be clear.
I am glad you reached this goal CodeRed. Enjoy!

I had the older zip too, but it was all properly instructed in our [Dev] thread. Copperhed posted 'This will root 2.3.5 or 2.3.6' for an earlier Superuser.zip last November, linked in InSaiyanone's excellent all-in-one guide.
Needing to root 4.0.4 would lead us to the next stickie, where projeqht linked
Starskyrob's 'Step 2: Flash Attached zip from recovery.' in his [GUIDE]{ROOT}How To Root The ICS Leak, posted March 28th, referring to the zip you and I succeeded with. I think anyone reading the stickies should find the same guidance.

just to give you guys some more confidence i ran trusselo's super easy batch scritp on my dad's windows 7 box to hack 3e recovery.
you can look at my 3e thread in captivate general but do not attempt the kernel swap methods!
use trusselo's script on windows
if it fails or you are on a mac/linux machine then use the manual 3e fix after you root the device.
after i got 3e modded for self signed update.zip zip flashing like the old 2e recovery on 2.1 sgs phones i installed rom manager and chose the captivate cwm recovery. rebooted into recovery, reinstaled packages. phone rebooted, reistaled packages again and i was sucessfully in cwm. from there i was able to backup the stock rom and installed a .zip file that just changed my build.prop (taking baby steps) i could have spoofed the build.prop in many ways but it was for the sake of testing. the flash was successful. i booted up checked for the change and confirmed it was written to /system properly.
then i rebooted and restored the backup. there were some graphical errors including a broken progress bar and a splash screen that covers the menu when the restore is done so it is difficult to navigate, but it is something. success! the restored rom booted and the old build.prop was in place proving it was a successful restore.
tomorrow i will try a replaced vending.apk (market) and the build.prop as a market fix and post it in a thread if it works. if gtg465x doesnt mind i will try to build a rom off his deodexed rom if someone doesnt beat me to it.
i think we need a bounty to buy a dev phone for someone more knowledgable than me. i dont want to go all cowboy and brick this thing, the captivate had much more as far as backup plans so im being more cautious with this one. and even if i had a dev phone i wouldnt be of as much help as others around xda.

Hey anyone find a way to install cwm install packages using this update.zip?
It says it can't mount the sdcard when I try to install the .zip.
Anyone?
Dani897 has already made a discussion of this, but I'm moving this information over as an official post in the Infuse 4G section as well.
This is from existz/untermensch's thread. I take no credit. See here for more info http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=909213
Making this modification will allow you to flash un-signed .zip files due to signature verification being turned off. (3e requires root)
* Download and extract the .zip
* Use a terminal emulator or ADB Shell and mount system as read/write.
* For backup purposes, use adb or root explorer to rename the current recovery file in /system/bin to recovery.orig
* Use a file manager (Root Explorer) and copy the new recovery file to /system/bin
* Reboot and your 3e (Froyo stock) recovery will no longer require signature checking.
You can now use this recovery or use the CWM from Captivate (posted in another thread here).
I am not responsible if this bricks your phone. This is easy cheese...just follow these steps.

Dani, i completely agree. If you notice, I made mention of your testing at the top of the article.
Now that there is a dedicated thread, its much more likely to be realized that this works FINE. I think once I get a tester for the Odin package I slapped together to get us back to stock in case we brick, and get it successfully setup, i'll put a thread out and we can REALLY get to work on some ROMs.
So far, this phone's software is nearly identical to the Captivate, meaning we will just need to port from the Captivate and we will have a mass of ROMs in no time!

as soon as we get some kernel dev on this thing i agree. porting will be easy. thanks for the write ups too. are you planning to get a second phone? i would test if i had two of them. my captivate will go to my brother, if it weren't for that id have probably bricked it and begged some people to try making new odin packages for me to fix it.
i understand that after a brick the user hates not having the phone and may be very tempted to return it but it is helpful to everyone to try all you can to recover it. if mine bricks im using the insureance plan and saying it was stolen, then i will have a dedicated test phone.
I have an Atrix as well, but would prefer someone who may have already bricked to try this package that i wrote up this morning.
I dont mind someone wanting to swap.their phone...but i literally need about an hour or two of time with the brick's user and its very likely that we will have working Odin....and then you and i...as well as others... can do kernel and rom deving nearly immediately. We have source already, so we only need to test this safety net . PM me if you find someone who is bricked or is willing to test!!

I have a bricked Infuse im not sure what caused the crash. I was running stock rooted by the super one click method and was uninstalling an app when it went all black except the bottom keys. Doesnt do much of anything else now. I attempted an odin fix someone suggested to no avail. I can get into download mode still but nothing else. Id be willing to try anything to unbrick it .
it's working for me, I unzipped, put the file in my dropbox, downloaded the file on phone from dropbox, used root explorer to mount, (I'm already rooted) copied the file, went to system/bin, renamed the original, then pasted the new file, rebooted, flashed CWM to captivate, and rebooted into recovery, and it works. I still have my HTC Inspire, i'm on a 30 day run here to see if i like the infuse. So far it's the best GPS i've had, and i've had a lot of phones. I hate to think I spent 600 bucks on a another captivate. I had that phone as well, but so far i really like it.

dont do that. you dont want the captivate param.ifs on here. you may loose download mode if the boot parameters get messed up. especially dont flash anything with bootloaders, that means no one click nad no 3-button fix roms. this may be similar to the galaxy s but there are atleast a few differences in hardware layout that would make that a bad idea. for instance this can run gps and camera during phone calls. the sgs cant so the way things comunicate on the board may be differet, it may also just be differences in the kernel or framework but we cant be sure.

Woops! AND DEODEXED!!?!?
I'm pretty new to all of this, but here is how I did it. Make sure you have busybox installed!
Extract the "recovery" file to your phone's internal SD card.
On your phone, go into your terminal emulator.
Type in "su" and press enter.
Type in "cd /sdcard" and press enter.
Type in "mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/stl9 /system"
Type in "cp -f recovery /system/bin" and press enter.
Reboot your phone.
Maybe this will help someone. Maybe it's not even the right way to do this, and my phone will soon explode. I'm a pretty big noob with this, so someone let me know.
PS: If you brick your phone, it isn't my fault.
Hi I came from iPhone 4 and like 2days owning this infuse, I am trying to follow gtg465x to install his ROM, I am done with the rooting and his next step is to "install 3e recovery" now that I am here I am totally lost, I downloaded the file here my Questions are:
1.where do I extract the zip I donwloaded from here? From the SD card root?
2. What thing will I use Terminal emulator or ADB SHELL to make it read/write is that 2 an Android apps I'm lost here. I am trying to be careful, I searched and found too much post and way different doing this. So now I am confuse.
Can anybody tell me how it install 3e recovery the easy and idiot proof way, like I said I am new to android I really have no idea about everything, and most of them too are initial I don't even know what the initials means. Anyone? Thanks

I came from an iphone as well, about 2 weeks ago. I used the method posted in my previous reply. It worked for me, and has been doing fine so far. One thing you must do is make sure busybox is installed before you try it though. If you dont have busybox installed, none of the commands will work. Then just download "Terminal Emulator" from the market, and use that to give commands.

Does this work? Anyone try?
works, nice write up too

awesome thanx for figuring it before i had to try a thousand combonations...
This is awesome!
How long should it stay at Samsung after doing all of the steps? I did all of the steps. Samsung flashed several times. Now its just staying at Samsung. Been this way for a couple of minutes.
sdcard issues
ok, first of all I did this and everything worked fine.
Upon first reboot, I think it went 4 or 5 times through the samsung bootloop and then loaded the rom (i wasn't watching it fastidiously).
Upon loading the rom and loading my apps from titanium backup, I finally hit the issue of not being able to move apps to the sd card; it just comes up with "failed to move application". I've rebooted just to make sure things weren't off from first boot. It's still not letting me move any apps to sd (even if allowed in the os).
Any ideas on what to try next?
I'm still at Samsung logo. Don't think its going to load the Rom. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. Following the steps. This is the second time I've tried this.
NM, figured it all out.
Going to give it a shot shortly.
This failed to work 3 times. Going back to RFS Gummy.
did anyone else lose ROOT access after booting up?
I used Imnuts' EP1Q hacked kernel flashable via CWM.
I went to TB and it said I didn't have root access. Flashed superuser.zip and still no go.

From what I have read over at Rootzwiki, that seems to be a problem exclusive to Imnuts' hacked kernel (possibly, he posted that he is looking into it as some users used his kernel and didn't have this problem). This process uses another kernel.
I was waiting for more users to give reports back, but I might just give this one a go.

I tested his hacked kernel and yes we ran into this issue, however flashing superuser in CWM fixed it for me... doesn't seem to work for other people so idk

Hrmm. Well for the people it isn't working for, try following the guide here to at least get a good copy of EP1Q on there and working first. Then follow my process.
Sucks that the imnuts kernel isn't working right yet. I would love to have the EP1Q kernel working on this, would be much more ideal.
It breaks root for me too. Come one imnuts, i know you know what is causing it, you are a smart cookie. Put out an updated zip already lol...

I've downloaded the file twice, but I keep getting MD5 hash value invalid on the Odin step for the Nameless recovery. That's as far as I could get in the steps. I tried downloading it from multiple places but no dice.

I executed this method using Imnuts kernel and kept root (Thankfully). However I looked at the post to confirm EXT4, and my Terminal Emulator doesn't match the one posted at all. Right now, it's just showing data and dbdata on EXT4, the rest is still on RFS. Is this normal for GB? I can post the exact coding if needed.

OK before anyone blasts me yes I have researched for two days now and feel like I have been run in circles. I have searched XDA and Google to no avail and no I'm not a noob. I myself have a galaxy s2 skyrocket but recently got my wife the infuse and I'm starting to think that was a mistake. OK this is what I've found...
I type in Google how to install CWM recovery on the infuse and every thing I find says it must be rooted first.
Running Android 2.3.6 update thru Samsung kies....
So I type in how to root the infuse and what I find is if you want to root without flashing a new kernal you must have CWM to install a zip file from the SD.
Seems like one big circle. To root my skyrocket was easy as flashing a recovery image in Odin of CWM recovery and opening a super user zip file to root. 5 minutes easy as 1.2.3.
So my questions are..
1. Can I flash a recovery image tar of CWM to the infuse using Odin?
2. If so where can I download the tar file. I already have Odin 1.85 installed on my PC so I don't need that unless the tar comes in a one click.
3. If I can't how can I root and install CWM without flashing a custom kernel?
Please don't give links to nothing heimdel. The last time I used heimdel was with my captivate and I spent 3 days unbricking it.
4. Will the Motorola exploit added in super one click work with Samsung or harm the phone in anyway?
Thanks ahead of time for the help...

But is flashing a new kernel the only option for rooting? If it were my phone I would flash away cause I'm a flashaholic but she don't want to lose all her info and have to restore it all. The only reason she wants root is to freeze those very annoying att bloatware apps that aggravate everyone by running all the time and slowing everything down...

Check with jscott. He may know for certain.
Flashing kernel does not alter data.
I made several root via heimdall versions.
Instead of heimdall, basically, if you can Odin an insecure kernel, boot into cwm recovery, you can flash my cwm root package.
It also remove all bloats. Check my uclb3 root thread especially post #2
And as far as I know, on the infuse uclb3, you can't root without an insecure kernel flash in download mode.
Well it may cost a phone of I may soft brick it a few times but I'm gonna put my programming skills to the test and see if I cant come up with a one click root to 1. Make life easier for everyone and 2. To make it simple for the noobs to figure out. I'll let you know if my java VB and other languages I know can come up with something. It may take me a while and a lot of lost sleep hair pulling cursing and crying but I'm gonna give it my best effort.. wish me luck cause I'm gonna need it...

For now, the normal exploits used for a one click root option don't work on the stock UCLB3 Gingerbread kernel. As qkster has mentioned, you need an insecure kernel to root UCLB3. Also, there isn't an easy way yet to change the stock recovery to CWM without using a custom kernel zImage that includes it. Check out this HOW-TO that I wrote up for an explanation of what it takes to root UCLB3 Gingerbread. This explains how to temporarily use a custom kernel to achieve root, and also explains how to go back to the stock kernel. None of this removes existing data on the phone.:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1603220
If you don't want to do all of the work required to root UCLB3 on your phone, then you can use qkster's Heimdall one-click packages or my Odin packages that he showed you earlier.
you can root the infuse with super one click... easiest way to just root it, and also might i add, the infuse is very difficult to hard brick, soft bricks are easy to fix, with odin or hiemdall but i haven't yet heard or seen a case where the infuse is actually hard bricked, now installing cwm is easy as well, just youtube it, very simple and that there should get you on your way to flashing

Assuming that you are talking about going back to stock Froyo to root with SuperOneClick? As of yet, you can't reliably use SuperOneClick on the latest Gingerbread release. Sounds like the OP wants to directly root UCLB3 Gingerbread.

Now, you're talking.
Good luck.
You will need to look at some kernel work.
You may also need to look at the pit files in the unbrick package.
If you can, also look at boot sequences of the galaxy device. Adam Outler did some neat stuff with the galaxy devices.
This is a method to root Atrix 2 running on Android GB(2.3.6) / ICS(4.0.4).

I had the issue the other day, on stock 2.3.6, I also saw that alterdlikeness had a similar issue as well. It was updating past the 3.03 on both su and Superuser.
I had issues on my A2 with 3.1 only, and it would just FC and not work. I had to remove and basically re-root, and leave it at 3.0.1.

You missed the point I was trying to make to those wanting to update thier binaries for su and superuser.... not new root exploits.
I just want everyone to know there are issues with 3.1... however today an update to 3.1.2 today has been proven to work for those having the issues that both alteredlikness and I have seen with FCs.

On Stock 2.3.6 rooted. The new updates to the Superuser app allow you to update the binary and use the settings now.
Updating thread for superuser 3.1.2 now..
This method works as stated today I was trying to update my su binary but update was not getting successful so I unrooted and rooted back using this method now everything is updated and running smoothly.

After that what steps do I need to take to get CWM installed so I can backup and install a new ROM?

I think they are the same, except this one has a more updated version of superuser - I think (someone correct me if I'm wrong).
I personally have always used the one in Jimmy's thread and just update the superuser app and binary (and, thanks for reminding me about that post - I never thanked him until today - and due credit to p3droid & JRW 28 of course).
As for CWM recovery, just install the A2 Bootstrap app after being rooted. Use the bootstrap app - top button, OK, bottom button to boot into recovery.
Good luck to you and your girl!

Boom, was one setup ahead of you and just finished all that. Currently backing up in CWM and waiting for a painfully slow download of Lithium and we should be jammin. Can't believe how easy it all was actually.
So I assume since this CWM is loaded from an app there's no way to boot into recovery should a bootloop or rom failure happen? Is that something people worry about?
Thanks for your response bud.

The cwm on boot feature may already be included in Lithium (edit: yes, it it included - just checked)... if not, you can set that up rather painlessly. And, yes, some of us do worry about that very much so..

Are you on the ICS leak already? Are you on AT&T? If you are on the ICS leak and on AT&T there is a way to root it in the leak thread in the General section. I put the files back up today.
If not, I really am not sure, one of the guys on the other leaks might be able to help there.
