Lost my HTC HD2---what phone should I get? - General Questions and Answers

I recently lost my HD2. I love this phone to death, I was among the 1st one tried out hyperdroib-v12, it was the best rom so far....Wondering what phone should I get this time. Here are some candidates:
Tmobile-G2x
HTC-HD7
Mytouch4G slide
or another HD2 ?
hoping for honest opinions here, pro and con? ...future stable tweak. I personally enjoy fast response, longer battery life, GPS, and user friendly..not so much of a theme, UI guys.
Thanks

i noticed you are a big HTC fan
so i'll suggest HTC Amaze, also called HTC Ruby
it's basically the old HTC Sensation upgraded

nice..thanks, looked it up ...HTC amaze is not being offered from Tmobile at the moment.

Based on what you're looking for, stability, fast response, battery life, GPS, and user experience it'd be wrong to suggest anything but WP7. You can't tweak it much but that's because it doesn't need to be tweaked to exceed android and even iOS in those categories.

wait for the nexus prime ;-)

Hi, I was in a similar situation to you a few weeks back...I replaced a broken HD2 with a new HD7 through Asurion (they were no longer offering the HD2 as a replacement :-( ), and after a few weeks of missing running Android, I bought another HD2 off of ebay for about $170. Now I have the HD2 as my primary phone running WP7 off NAND and Android off SD, and I have the HD7 to play with on the side while we wait for DFT to create an Android hack for that phone as well. The HD7 development is getting close, but it's not quite as far along as I'd like before I'll make the HD7 my primary phone--for me, the HD2 is still the king. I'd get another one of those, if I were you...

Id get the g2x

I have been using WP7 for a few months now and is one of the best phones i've ever had, i recommend you the HD7 you're not going to regret it!!

If you like installing Custom Roms ,Kernels etc. Than get the Nexus S
Or really wait for the Nexus Prime!
The Nexus S is a TOP Smartphone which is also very cheap!

I would wait for Nexus Prime.

HD2 or Nexus One

I have a choice between an HD2 or a Nexus one by trading someone for it. Which one should I get and why?
I'm gonna say nexus one even though the hd2 has android now by way of unnoficial means. I don't know if everything is fully working and will continue to work but windows mobile is pretty meh. Its always flustered t6he crap out of me albeit the hardware wasn't HD2 levels. But if you like windows or your one of those serious business types then HD2 for you.
I would really like the hd2 since Android is now possible on it. I just don't know how stable it is at the moment. Can anyone tell me what works on hd2 and what doesn't?
It's still a bit far from being fully compatible. Pretty much everything works but with certain conditions. For example, the Desire ROM IMO runs everything (even the camera), but it's not compatible with certain Windows Mobile Roms and even the factory ROM isn't fully compatible. The battery isn't lasting as long when running Android either. You're probably going to want to get a Class 6 Micro SD for it if you want some speed added to it too. IMO it's pretty damn close to being fully compatible and I feel glad I got the HD2 over the Nexus one after seeing how close it is to having Android ported to it. Still, don't go for it if THAT is the only reason you want it. Android will not be 100% done it. It'll still have moments where it could freeze and you have to manually reset it. For all we know, the developers could just get pissed and quit developing for it tomorrow so I suggest not depending on it being fully done.
I picked up Nexus three months ago...since I'm not that patient regarding firmware updating...Nexus being a real google phone relaly got me then, so after painfully deciding for something like, two weeks, i bought nexus...
if flashing newly cooked ROMS on a regular basis and feeling excited but whatever new things come out and eager to try them first, go nexus.
Leo all the way!
You have all the benefits of a mature stable business OS: WM, plus the chance to test young funny Android
I Agree with orb... I thought about selling my leo and getting nexus, but the leo seems to like me more. ;D
Leo!!
And I forgot to mention it´s great super screen!!
Nexus one ftw!!!
I'd get an HD2 since they don't make the Nexus anymore.
I am a HD2 owner, but if I had the chance to go back in the past, I would probably choose the Nexus One. However, I like both very much, but the "Google Experience" is much more attractive than win mobile 6.5.

I'm trading someone for a Nexus One if I choose to do so. I primarily want Android on my phone btw.
Bump, I'm leaning towards the hd2 at the moment
Keep leaning cause its the most bad ass phone I've ever used or seen. Its guarantee'd to be a show stopper at work and make all your iphoney coworkers slink off into a corner with their iapps to make themselves feel better.

Keep on Leo´s line!!
Now you can have Android on it
If you want to use Android, go for nexus. Yes you can have Android on HD2. I tried it on my TD2 also, but the battery life was horrible, and the phone gets really really hot, when used, and no call sounds at all.
Hopefully this will get better, but nobody can be sure if the port to android for WM devices will be fully functional in the future at all.
You will have a better android 2.2 FroYo experience on the Nexus.
They both have problems, nexus one is cursed with touch button problem (not sure in the new ones) anyway, the one I had was cursed with the problem. Hd2 i can not say, but will be receiving one soon. only problem is with the hd2 that People can't use windows Mobile and cry about " I want android" other than that its a good phone.
I have both.
Touchscreen on HD2 is kinda flaky at best even after hacking, but the HUGE screen is a big plus for reading e-books.
Nexus one has Trad Chinese interface out of the box, no custom ROM required. All you have to do is to get IME.
It's all about mobile OS preference. If you prefer Android 2.2, go for nexus one, but if you're T-Mobile US customer, wait for HTC Vanguard.
I bought an HD2 through upgrading my mobile contract last week and I returned it in six days for a Nexus one (bought from a private seller). Windows Mobile home screen looks nice but that's about it. The layout of OS is extremely confusing and takes a long while to get use to. The screen is very nice but wasnt enough to keep me from returning the phone. I also installed Android on the phone but it will still be a while to fix all the bugs and there are plenty and it just never feels right in terms of stability. Go with the nexus one. It is awesome. If the HD2 initially came with official android, HD2 all they way.

[Q] HTC Desire or HD2 -- Urgent :((

Hi guys,
I need to buy a PDA. I have 3 devices in my budget:
X10
HD2
Desire
Which one to go for? I am more leaned towards HD2 with a hope that it runs Android with all functions (including Camera / Good battery life + no issues with Mic for Incoming / Outgoing Calls) & it will also support WinMo7.
Please share your opinions esp. for HD2 vs Desire
sounds to me like you have already made up your mind
hTC Leo: You can have both Android and WM, and perhaps WP7
hm..
But how is your experience with LEO running Android? battery will survive for one day? or less?
Any problems with Calls?
My experience is great
all works almost same as in Android native devices , battery lasts less than in WM but can make it a day.
Not any prob with calls really.
@orb:
Are you using any WinMo ROM on your HD2 or is the default one?
i was going through a Thread where almost majority of the people were not happy with HD2.. may be because of the Stock ROM?
Of course I´m not using stock!
I flashed to a cooked ROM since day 1, have a read on Leo section so you´ll find out what members think of this super device!
Desire, i think thats why better than HD-2, unless your the guy who wants to switch to OS's everyday

I use the latest stock ROM for my HD2 on O2, never had a problem with it.
Also install SPB Mobile Shell 3.5 as I find it a better interface.
What do you actually want to use your phone to do though?
Most people from what I've read run android on their HD2 because it's cheaper than getting a desire HD, they don't really flip between the two.
What sort of user will you be?
Yup want to use it for Android with a hope that WinMo7 will run on it one day

Ok in that case there's no hope for you
Your option is the HD2 as I doubt WP7 will be ported to an android phone.
Have you played with WP7 yet?
I seriously recommend trying it out in a shop if your choice is android and WP7, because if you discover WP7 is not for you, it's better to find out sooner and then just buy an android phone.

[Q] Best Smartphone

I am trying to decide on a new phone. The carrier is not an issue, I've had a rooted mytouch, a rooted nexus one, stock evo4g, and currently now have an epic 4g. Multimedia and apps are very important to me, the iphone4 looks good, but my current phone my be better. Am thinking about a windows phone but don't know anything about them. Any suggestions?
If you are looking to mod/play with your phone do not choose a winmo7 phone.. Not quite yet. It simply is what it is and they are so new the apps are not there yet. As far as apps the iPhone in sheer quantity has the most but Android is where the devs are turning to more and more. There are also a lot of apps on android that are not on an iPhone. The new Nexus S is an amazing fast device as I have been playing around with mine and the SAMOLED with its curves and anti smear screen IMO out plays the iPhone4s smaller not quite as bright seeming screen. I work at att and see the thing every day and still feel Samsung has really got the best screen (apps). Windows has done well with this new operating system but is still very new, Apple will be Apple, blackberry is great for non-Gmail email and Android will let people play with what they wanna play with. Depends totally what you plan on doing beyond media and apps
I say go for the HTC Leo. Great perfomance, great screen, and it runs WM 6.5, WM 6.5.x, Android, and soon hopefully WP7

The branded galaxy S phones have the best multimedia support but you already got one so...
Best apps however, go for an iPhone 4. Unfortunately, you can't have the best of both worlds.
samsung galaxy S
Blackberry 9700
Blackberry 9700 Bold.
If you like to experiment with different OS buy Leo and if you don't like it, soon you'll like
HTC of Iphone, anything else is a dissapointment
Well if you don't mind waiting this summer there are going to be a ton of dual core phones our for us to choose from.
Right now I'm rocking a Nexus 1 with 233; I'm going to wait a bit and see what comes out later and see what comes.

How is the HTC HD2 "not as good" lol... Have you seen the dev community on it? I'd wager it's one of the most supported phones here on XDA. Certainly a hell of a beast too even if it does come with winmo. They've fixed that slight oversight on htc's part by replacing it with android

I had my sony ericsson x1 replaced with an x2. It has 6.5 and I still love the OS. It's truly a powerful platform if you have the need for it.
Meanwhile, I have an android device as my daily phone. The hardware that came out last year blows much of the 528MHz processor based winmo devices, like the x2 and the touch pro 2, out of the water. Advanced hardware coupled with an OS that was optimized for mobile chipsets, I find android fairly customizable and strikes a nice balance of a serious business tool and a digital media consumption device. Amazingly, it can do this while still performing its duties as a phone about 90% of the time.
Long story short: I like winmo 6.1-6.5.3 just as much as I like android 1.6-2.2.1. (I also like Symbian.)

I would suggest purchasing an HD2 if you want the best of both world. If you want to show off to your buddies with the big screen and dual booting capabilities then go for it.
People would always ask what phone I was using because it was so big and sexy looking. It made all the guys feel insecure and girls say, "wow, that's big!" And I would tell them, "I'm used to carrying around big things in my pants."
Funny thing is nobody says much about my myTouch now. I lost my mojo...

Should I get the Sensaition XE (Stock with no plans of using custom roms) or iphone4s

I know that the Iphone 4S isn't out yet.
And I know this is a developer's forum.
But I was hoping to get some insights with my problem.
I plan on getting either of this phone as a gift for my father.
He won't be installing any custom roms and will probably stick with the stock UI (sense).
He isn't that old, late 40's so he will still be able to use stock android OS no problem such as Touchwiz and Sense.
So...that's my situation.
Should I get the Sensation XE (Stock with no plans of using custom roms) or iphone 4s?
A thing that has me concerned right off the bat is the 1GB internal storage of the Sensation XE compared to the iphone 4s.
Has this been a major problem for you guys with installing apps and games?
Thanks.

Def get the iPhone 4s. You wouldn't want a crippled locked up device that has a super boring interface that's looked the same since its original launch just a different case rehash. Def get the 4s...
this has to be the weirdest place to ask if you should buy an iphone. this is an android forum. what do think, we all want iphones but settle for android? The 1gig of internal storage you will NEVER fill. And android has apps2sd, meaning you can install apps on the sd card, so... infinite storage for apps.

Tough question.
iPhones are known for their ease of use,but when they screw up .... lookout.
TBH,the Android platform is nice, once you get used to it.
The removable SD card is a nice feature.
I also like that the OS isn't kept under strict control like the Apple OS.
The removable battery is great too.
BTW: my phone isn't rooted and I'm 53 years old.
I still haven't found anything I'd take over my Sensation and I have looked at all the "superphones" out there.
There are really only three good reasons to choose a Sensation over an iPhone (4s or otherwise):
1) Cost This is really the biggie for me: because I'm on T-Mo/Sensation, instead of ATT/iPhone, I'm saving over $100 a month on our family plan. That's over $2500 over the next two years, which is unbelievably important for me at this juncture in my life.
2) Hackability Now, I know you can hack your iPhone, but really if you're interested in getting into the nitty-gritty of seeing how a smartphone runs "under the hood" then you want an Android phone. This probably won't matter much to your dad.
3) Screen Size A 4.3-inch screen gives you 50% more screen area than a 3.5-inch screen. In my case, this is important because I have low vision, so the extra pixel density of the iPhone is a complete waste on me; far more important is having everything be as large as possible, so I don't need to break out a magnifying glass as often to read stuff on my phone. This might matter to your dad, especially if his eyes are starting to go (I know it was a consideration for my mom when we were looking for a new phone for her).
If none of those are a concern... then it probably doesn't matter either way which one you choose. If your dad really wants that Retina display, or to brag to everyone that he has an iPhone, then get him an iPhone. If he's addicted to iTunes, or is already very familiar/in love with the Apple ecosystem, get him an iPhone. If you guys want to stick with Verizon or AT&T over T-mo, get an iPhone. Otherwise... get whatever's on sale.
Comparing the 100% stock Sensation XE to the iPhone 4S - go for the 4S
Whereas I LOVE my Sensation, and I'd never get an iPhone as I don't use any Apple products, my GF has an iPhone 4 and it does exactly what she wants it to do. Battery life is awesome compared to the stock Sensation, but with my personal ROM it's comparable
Ha..went through this my self and had exactly the same considerations.
I know its not exactly the answer to your question...but I actually decided WP7 was the way to go for my father. Its also super easy to ease and he totally loves it + you can get some really good value handsets (HTC7 Pro about GBP220 simfree).
I know we all love knocking it - but MS stuff does have some merrit. Lots of us loved good ole WinMo for a long time. But now I think they're designing more for the market you describe you know? Give it some consideration maybe?

Completely agree - the 4S would be easier to use, and faster than a stock Sensation. Rooted, the Sensation is as fast, fluid and nice to use as an iPhone. Unrooted, the iPhone wins hands down, and I imagine the 4S would be even better (although Apple's had the fluidity thing down since the 3GS).
I probably wouldn't buy an iPhone, but they're great for mums and dads and they work really well outta the box.
EDIT: didn't see DJ's post but WP7 is also great for the parents, we got one for my girlfriend's dad who's a complete technophobe and he manages it no problem
I think apples integration with itunes and all that would be confusing. Id go android or wp7, which btw is ridiculously easy to navigate.
If I were to get a smart phone for one of my parents I would get them an iPhone, even though I would get Android for myself.
Just because he's older dosent mean he can't use an android phone. I personally prefer screen space so automatically the I-phone loses in that dept. I've really tried to use iPhones before and they just leave me wanting more. If he's gonna leave both phones stock then I would go with the Amaze. The 1 gb of ram on phone makes it really snappy and the Camera is awesome.I personally have a sensation and since all the best features of these other high end phones are showing up here I see no reason to switch phones now. Good luck with whatever you choose
If he is tuff on phones go with the Sensation. If he isn't iphone 4s. Also what cell provider does he plan on using? Sprint and ATT would be good but Verizon would suck. Also if he uses the internet alot I would say Sensation do to the faster speed of the t-mobile network and better data plans.

Cool. My mom is in her 60s and doesn't know how to check voicemail on her cell. My parents got their first computer about 7 years ago and a month later asked me why it was running really slow; I took a look and found that about 30 instances of internet explorer were minimized. They would minimize IE when they were done and then open another instance later.
They were paying a local IPS for internet access and also paying AOL to view the content they had access to... need I go on?

Yes you are correct it is getting off topic however that said the versions of IOS I have seen and used for a while I've found it a horrible operating system to work around the android OS is far more user friendly and 1 gig of internal memory is more than enough space for your average person add in the fact the android market has more free apps than apple
My personal choice android by far
