Volume too low - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was wondering if there was a way to make the Transformer louder without rooting.
I have Volume + installed but that doesn't do anything.
I have a few films that I would like to watch but the tube is too noisy for me to hear them

The Voodoo control helps a bit (increases the max volume) - You need the clemsyn kernel (and root) before it works though. As I said - it helps a bit - but you will never run a disco off the TF101 output.

Will rooting help?

Or you could actually support the dev and use the paid version which works with stock kernels

Just FYI.
Volume+
This Application is ONLY for phones running Gingerbread.
It will NOT work on any other version of Android but should work on ANY phone running Gingerbread (2.3).
I have the free version of Voodoo control but I only have options for earbud/line-out boosting. I'm running ARHD which is supposed to have the most up to date Clemsyn kernel.
I'd purchase the paid version if I had confirmation that I would have boost options for the standard side speakers, since I use my pad at work and it can get noisy when I'm trying to hear something.

Do you have it rooted?

Anyone else have some suggestions?

I use equalizer in the app store, put all the controls to max and the volume is a bit better. Nothing gets the volume up too much but if you root your device you can then change the cfg file to increase the volume a little more and balance the speakers if that is a problem for you also.
I have my tf rooted just for this reason, everything else is stock. Hope that gets you better volume

Can you give more details about editing the cfg file, location, line etc? TIA

MX Player has option to increase volume to 200% if you set HW+ renderer, maybe that'll help?

[Q] No audio from video recordings...maybe ROM related? [SOLVED]

Update-Solutions added
This thread kinda rambles, and covers a couple different issues.
I'll try to summarize the solutions to each to time and eliminate extra reading for those who might end up here later.
Issue #1: My Mesmerize was not recording sound with videos
Solution: Go into Voodoo Sound Control app (download from market if you don't have it) and under [recording profile], select "Original". Solved!
Issue #2: I was having various minor issues that sounded as thought they might be fixed by flashing a new kernel.
scarmon25 suggested that I try out OTB-Reloaded. He was right, this is a great kernel! It allows overclocking and undervolting at the same time. I'm hoping this will give me both better performance and greater battery life.
Solution: Backup everything (Nandroid and TiBackup suggested), Flash the new kernel from recovery (you can use ROM manager to boot into Clockwork Mod Recovery) and reboot.
I'm not about to get into a discussion of backups, recovery, flashing, which kernel you need, etc... This is just a plug/endorsement for the OTB-reloaded kernel, period.
Issue #3: At some point while updating to 2.2 Froyo and flashing new kernels, ROMs, etc... my home screen started rotating along with my apps. I could turn rotation on/off from the notification tray, but that disabled it for apps also.
Solution: It was pointed out by add144 that it's the home screen launcher that controls home screen rotation.
I'm running LauncherPro, be he mentioned that most other launchers (ADW, GO Launcher, etc...) also have the ability to allow or lock home screen rotation.
In my case (LauncherPro), here's the process for locking your homescreen rotation while still allowing auto-rotation in other apps:
1) From home screen, go to Menu (button) -> Preferences
2) Select Behavior Settings
3) Uncheck "Enable Auto-rotation"
4) Done!
I hope this summary saves someone some time and fruitless searching.
Cheers!

----Original message follows---
Hi all,
I apologize for this question being a bit light on useful details, but my memory isn't so great.
I have a Mez, running 2.2 Froyo (updated from USCC), a custom ROM (I think), and a custom kernel (not sure which one).
I know that sounds insane, but there was a time a while back when I was flashing different things trying to find something that worked to my liking, and honestly just can't remember what combination I settled on.
It doesn't help that I'm still fuzzy on the whole ROM vs Kernel thing.
Anyway, here's the issue...
The videos I record on the phone have no sound.
You can hear a little background hiss, but no actual sound from the mic.
I can't remember if it worked before I updated to 2.2, but I suspect it did or I think I'd have noticed it before.
I guess I could flash everything back to stock and see if that fixes it, but I'd REALLY rather not do that, since it would take me so long to get it back sorted.
Is there a way to figure out exactly what I currently have installed on the phone?
Also, can anyone think of things I can do to troubleshoot the no audio issue?
Thanks in advance,
-Mike
This sounds like a issue I had on one of the earlier voodoo kernels. The fix was to download the voodoo control appear from the market and set recording preset to normal. This was fixed in the later releases of voodoo. Do you know which kernel your are on. That would help us narrow it down for you.
Edit. If you download the cpu spy app from the market you can pull your info up and see which kernel your on. It won't say exactly which one but should have the authors name in it so we can know which one your on to an extent.

Thanks for the quick reply scarmon.
I checked my voodoo sound options (already had the app) and I don't have a 'normal' recording preset.
My choices are:
Original
Balanced (new default) - with DRC
High Sensitivity - with DRC
Loud Environment - with DRC
I assume this means I have one of the newer versions of voodoo sound?
I'll get that cpu spy app and see what it says about my kernel.
Thanks!

I wonder why the "new" profiles don't work?
Is it a limitation of this phone or a problem with voodoo?
The newer voodoo kernels have that issue fixed. I believe it was just a issue with the first few ec10 voodoo kernels. May wanna try one of the new OTB or imnuts kernels. The recording works on those as I have tried both.

Good to know, thanks.
Is updating to one of those kernels you mentioned a simple 'boot to recovery and flash zip from SD card' or something more?
Here's a screenshot of my current kernel info from cpu spy...
Does that help any? I don't recognize that author.
EDIT: That OTB kernel sounds really interesting.
Please refer to my above question about the simplicity or complexity of flashing that kernel over the one I have now.
Yeah u flash in CWM. If your on voodoo and 2.2 then you shouldn't have any issues. If u go with OTB make sure to get the voltage control app. So u can adjust it. Just go easy on the over clock and undervolting till u see how your phone reacts. If u go with OTB let me know and I will post my settings. Been running them for a while and they seem pretty stable.
Edit. Switched to PC to correct my spelling.

The above is what I'd try first. If you still find that you're having issues even with a new kernel, I'd consider flashing a new ROM as well.

K, This is what I have been running and it seems pretty stable for me. Keep in mind each phone is different and yours may not respond as well, or it may do even better then mine. I would suggest using the apply for now option in voltage control for a few days and once you know there good, you can apply at boot. Also nemisses included and great feature in CWM that allows you to remove boot settings in the event that you set something at boot and it doesn't work. You will get this once you flash the OTB v1.3 kernel. This will update CWM and the feature is under the advanced section of CWM if you need it. Here's the settings I have been using.
For the Scheduler I use BFQ
I set the Max Clock to 1200mhz
I have the following step and voltage drops enabled
200 mhz -100
400 mhz -100
600 mhz -75
800 mhz -75
1000 mhz -75
1200 mhz -50
With theses settings I am getting about a day of moderate use from my battery and great performance. You may play around with it and may get better results. Hope this helps.
OTB 1.3?
The thread I was watching only goes to v1.2 for OTB-reloaded.
What am I missing?
I also noticed that is was technically a Fascinate kernel, is that a problem?
It works on the mesmerize too. That's what I'm on. There should be a link in the OP that's has v 1.3. Its he second link at the bottom of the OP

Okay, I think I see the issue.
I was looking at this thread, whereas I think you're referring to this thread, right?
What's the difference between those 2 kernels, other than the OTB version?
one is Touch wiz and one is AOSP. If you are on stock Froyo you need touchwiz. AOSP will not work on stock ROM. You posted in the right one for OTB. This is the one you need for Stock Froyo

I don't think I'm on stock froyo, though.
As far as I can tell, I'm running SuperFrankenClean 0.292.
I base this on the files I found on my SD card while I was moving some stuff around just now.
In any case, it sounds like the touchwiz kernel is the one I need.
I'm downloading it now and will flash in a few.
Let me know if it looks like I'm about to frag something and I'll wait.

AntonX kernel

I was this kernel for a couple days and it was almost perfect. However after a couple hours voodoo sound app would tell me the rom author broke the app and the kernel didnt support voodoo sound. I tried googling but no real answer as to how to fix it.
I downloaded the voodoo app from the devs site and uninstalled the one I had installed from play store. After I installed the app everything worked for a couple hours then the popup message about it being broke. A reboot would solve it but shortly after it would break.
This only happened on the versions with oc/uv natively activated. Finally used gremlin remover and started over. Only I flashed v1 and the voodoo app from the dev site. So far everything seems good.
Has anybody else noticed this? I like the voodoo sound processor better than dsp or the beats audio ports.
yes, also when there was no voodoo sound, just voodoo lagfix. Sometimes reinstalling the Voodoo app from market fixes this, sometimes you have to reinstall the rom. I think files get corrupted.
I seems that Supercurio (author of Voodoo Sound app) checks if his app was installed from market, even if it's free. This means that this app cannot be pre-installed with a ROM, it has to be downloaded by the user. Nothing really bad about it, just uninstall with Titanium and reinstall from market.
I think I figured it out. I could reproduce the results by using tegrak on the oc/uv native kernel like you would on the non-native oc/uv kernel.
@AntonX yes it is to avoid the cracked apps from being used. However he also has the app listed on his own site.

NoLED has never really required kernel support. I've tried it and didn't like it. Your screen stays on, it drains you battery. I've also tried BLN (BackLightNotifications), my screen stays off and my battery drains less than with NoLED. Now users have a choice, they can use whichever one they wish. User demand for BLN is higher because it's better.
Ya, I see, at first I also had the sreen always on but seem like it had option to turn of the screen use the sensor so when in pocket or be up side down, it not drain much, anw just bcause of your post, I will go and test BLN now and will mark on battery drainage btween BLN and NL w srnsor option thanx u

I prefer NoLED too. In my experience the difference in battery drain is negligible. I just got used to the customized notifications that NoLED provides. Being able to tell what type of notification I'm getting without having to unlock the phone is very useful.

So I just installed re installed tegrak today to boost up to a 1.2 (that's what I've always run). When I opened it I found it was already clocked at 1.4? I thought you had to enable the OC before it took effect?

I'm pretty sure that tegrak will see those higher frequencies regardless if you've set them... It should limit itself to whatever you set under governor scaling

[Q] Suggest ICS or JB Rom

Hi!
Now i`m using Galaxy S 4G Beam. It is really good and fast, i can play new 3d games easy, GPS is much better than on stock 2.3.6, but there are some problems...
First of all Media server uses about 20-25% of battery and i have to charge my SGS every day even if i dont use it hard (only 10 mins of calls and a bit of web serfing and music).
The other problem is that the camera is really bad compared with stock GB 2.3.6.
So can you recommend me ICS or JB Rom for daily use without bugs, with good camera, GPS and battery life?
Thank You!
P. S. Sorry for my bad English. It`s not my native language but i`m learning it.

Without bugs? No. With minimal bugs that may not affect major usage? Possibly, but that depends entirely on what your requirements are.
We have users for whom the lack of wifi-calling is a dealbreaker. We have users for whom lack of wifi at all is not an issue.
We have users for whom lack of 4G display (rather than H) is a dealbreaker. We have users for whom lack of phone/data connectivity is irrelevant due to no longer having a contract.
If you want to make these nebulous requests, expect an answer that directs you back to where bugs are highly reduced and a maximum of features work, especially when your only specific requirements are that things work like GB. If you want to give specific requests as to what you want... besides the GB camera, GB GPS, and GB battery life without actually using GB... we might be able to help you. Otherwise, no. You're not getting GB features without GB.

Thank you for great answer. I really appreciate it. I understand that i can`t get all features working with unofficial Rom. I have found a lot of custom ICS/JB roms on this forum. As i wrote above now i`m using Galaxy S 4G Beam, before it i was on stock GB. I just wonder if there are better roms for my needs. So here is a list of things i need to be working in a rom (the order means priority):
-Calls/SMS
-Wi-fi
-Good battery life
-Good camera/Camcorder
-Good GPS
-Good audio with earphones(i was using Voodoo Sound on GB and sound was great and on my current rom it has some annoying bugs)
-Smooth games
-Bluetooth
Things i dont need:
-Wi-fi calling
-Tethering
-Auto Brightness control
-mkv hardware decoding
Thanks in advance
I'd probably suggest checking out Ultragen then, and flashing the Proton ICS kernel onto it after. From most accounts, it's the ICS with the most combined fixes built into it, and while I don't think it has the auto-brightness, everything else should be there including the DSP manager with Voodoo Sound built in so it doesn't have the "my volume is screwed up after answering a phone call" bug. Also, it already has the AGPS fix baked in, so you won't have to edit your build.prop manually after.
Regarding the rest of it... if you don't like ICS/JB camera, use an app. If you don't think your games are smooth enough, change your governor and scheduler.

Testing GPS rigth now with cold start near window. 1 sat in view by now (2 mins).
P. S. Can someone recommend any good camera app for ICS?
P.S.S. Is there a big difference between Galaxy S 4G Beam and Ultragen?
First GPS link takes ~10-15 minutes as it gets all its initial assist data sorted. Getting the free (or at least, guilt-ware) GPS Status app should take care of keeping your AGPS up to date and GPS linking faster. Also, should make GPS not lose its connection when switching apps... at least, not quite as fast.
I personally use Camera ZOOM FX, but I picked it up for 10 cents during one of the market sales. Was SO worth that. Probably worth its regular price too, but... eh, there are free options too. That's what I use though.
You're looking at an August 10th ROM (Galaxy S Beam TUK1) and a December 24th ROM (Ultragen 1.0.1) so... yes, there will be differences in those months. Whether they're ones you notice or care about? Maybe. Also, they each have their own optimizations...
Please try to make sure you're on the getochkn 1.0.1 Ultragen (post 4) though, not the original 1.0 from daothanhduy1996 which needed the hotfix. The original had various GPS and other little issues... the 1.0.1 edition fixed, well:
Fixes include
-working and update-able Youtube
-GPS with fast lock fixes from HERE
-Camera records video in 720p
-DSP Manager added from Audiophile ROM with voodoo sound that doesn't seem to screw up headphone playback after phone calls with PooP kernel, Thanks RaverX and let me know if I shouldn't have taken your DSP manager and used it in this ROM. (scroll to the right in the DSP manager to get the analog boost and other voodoo controls).
-Integrated Hotfix, no longer needed to flash afterwards

GPS works fine (locked in like 15 mins indoor near window). And yes, im on 1.0.1 Ultragen. Speaking about camera i should say that i have tried a few of camera app (including Camera ZOOM FX) and i must say that the quality of pictures is poor... So i can make a conclusion that on official roms sumsung uses some camera driver or something like that to make photos look really good and sharp.
But i got another problem. Voodoo sound still got call bug. In the Ultraget thread is said "DSP Manager added from Audiophile ROM with voodoo sound that doesn't seem to screw up headphone playback after phone calls with PooP kernel". But i flashed Proton ICS kernel, so voodoo didnt work properly. So i reflashed Ultragen to have Poop kernel but voodoo sound doesnt work anyway... I didnt find anything helpful in the Ultragen Q&A thread. Thanks.
Did you install the Voodoo Sound app? If so, remove it again. The Ultragen DSP Manager has Voodoo Sound built in.

Yes, i had Voodoo Sound app instaled, but then i removed it. But DSP manager voodoo sound works only until first call (same as Voodoo Sound app does). By the way, Voodoo Sound app is much better for me as it can automatically control the amplifier level. Is it ok that i can change CPU governor on the PooP kernel?
Well, with the Voodoo Sound app, your volume is always +15 (max) and the amplifier goes from -65 to +2 (or +5, if you want potential distortion). With DSP Manager, you set the amplifier level on the WM8994 page (I like +2 when I'm planning on needing volume) and then the normal volume sets the actual volume level. Half of one, six dozen of the other. In both cases, you're dealing with some volume change being set... you just have ~35 steps (it moves in steps of 2db) through the Voodoo Sound app and ~15 through the stock volume control. But if you see the Voodoo Sound volume pop-up instead of the stock, ever, you're still stuck in current buggy Voodoo Sound-ness.
And yes, you can change governors and schedulers. Just make sure if you change them and switch up kernels that you either don't have it set to go on boot or you make sure you use something that will be available on the new one. That's one of the best ways to lock up a phone I've found... set a nifty option in SetCPU, switch kernels, and every time SetCPU tries to set it after boot, the phone locks up because it can't control its clock anymore. On a positive note, popping the SD card and rebooting appears to confuse SetCPU enough to break the auto-config.

Increase volume in 4.2.1

Ever since I ugraded to 4.2.1, the volume+ app has had no effect on the frustratingly low volume of the tablet (music effects is set to volume+ in settings). I've been using earphones mostly as I can never make out anything coming out of the speakers when there is minimal noise around. I have a rooted tablet with stock firmware. Is there anything that can be done to significantly increase the volume?
Thanks.

Have you looked into installing Sony xLoud & ClearAudio+ using PimpMyRom? (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1908269)
I'm running 4.1.1 and this mod made my tablet much louder. I believe this mod also works for 4.2.1.

Did you try enabling the root features in volume+?

Yeah, I tried "Patch audio_effects" and it's still the same.

Also it seems that I need to be unlocked to run Sony xLoud & ClearAudio+ on PimpMyRom.

That's too bad. The first post in PimpMyRom thread stated that all you needed was a rooted device so I thought it might work for you. Are you open to unlocking the device? In my experience, the benefits of unlocking and installing custom ROM/mods (including increased volume) have been totally worth the loss of warranty.

Almost everyone says that - except those whose tablets broke.

Very true!
But I think my tablet would have been left unused for most parts if not for the increased performance gained from unlocking it. Wonder what the failure rate has been so far.

I'm just sticking with 4.1 locked for now, under warranty, and Volume+ even works without root enhancement just great. I've got to turn it down so I don't blow out the speakers! I'm not seeing any reason to "upgrade" personally and I predict I will use my warranty before the year is over. CROMIX can wait. I've got this thing pretty dialed in and I'm satisfied with its performance and reliability rooted and locked on stock ROM. Can't wait to see what it really can do thought on custom ROM but not so bad that I want to pay Asus for repairs in exchange. To each their own.

Hey, in case you're still looking for a way to increase volume, I just found a fantastic app that can drastically increase volume on 4.2.1. It's called Music Volume EQ. I set the volume on it to 6/15 and the tablet sounds really loud. When I was playing with it the volume got so loud I was afraid of blowing the speakers. The equalizer on it works quite well, too.
You can autostart the app on boot and it'll remember your settings so once it's configured to your liking, you can just forget about it and enjoy the loud volume.

[Q] Low Volume on TF101 with custom ROMs

Hi,
I rooted my Asus Transformer TF101 since the stock android was slow in it.
I tried several roms and I found EOS 4 provides good performance and then I found a version from Timduru which is based on EOS 4 and it gave the best performance I have seen in TF101 so far. However, the volume became very low once I installed this ROM. I tried KAT Tool, volume +, speaker boost, but still the volume level is unacceptably low.
Now I switched back to Android Revolution HD and the volume is much better (same as stock). However, the performance of the ROM is definitely not better than the previous ROM.
Is there a way to amplify the volume with EOS 4 based ROMS? I have searched the forums and I could see that most threads are referring volume + and one thread was mentioning changing a config file to boost the volume. Is this an option?
Please help.
Thanks,
Balaji.
Best method is the K.A.T Tool, choose the KAT Audio Max profile.
I find it to be louder than stock on EOS and KatKiss ROMs (as well as others).
Hi,
I reinstalled EOS4, installed K.A.T tool and selected Audio Max profile. It is better now, but I still feel it is not as loud as stock.
Can I install katkernel over Android Revolution HD to get better performance? I guess ARHD has ICS on it.
Or, is there a list of TF101 ROMS which doesn't have low volume issue? I can probably install one of them and see if I can install katkernel to improve the performance.
Katkernel is really boosting the performance of the tablet to a noticeable level.
Thanks,
Balaji.
Any updates?
Thanks,
Balaji.
