[Q] No audio from video recordings...maybe ROM related? [SOLVED] - Samsung Mesmerize

Update-Solutions added
This thread kinda rambles, and covers a couple different issues.
I'll try to summarize the solutions to each to time and eliminate extra reading for those who might end up here later.
Issue #1: My Mesmerize was not recording sound with videos
Solution: Go into Voodoo Sound Control app (download from market if you don't have it) and under [recording profile], select "Original". Solved!
Issue #2: I was having various minor issues that sounded as thought they might be fixed by flashing a new kernel.
scarmon25 suggested that I try out OTB-Reloaded. He was right, this is a great kernel! It allows overclocking and undervolting at the same time. I'm hoping this will give me both better performance and greater battery life.
Solution: Backup everything (Nandroid and TiBackup suggested), Flash the new kernel from recovery (you can use ROM manager to boot into Clockwork Mod Recovery) and reboot.
I'm not about to get into a discussion of backups, recovery, flashing, which kernel you need, etc... This is just a plug/endorsement for the OTB-reloaded kernel, period.
Issue #3: At some point while updating to 2.2 Froyo and flashing new kernels, ROMs, etc... my home screen started rotating along with my apps. I could turn rotation on/off from the notification tray, but that disabled it for apps also.
Solution: It was pointed out by add144 that it's the home screen launcher that controls home screen rotation.
I'm running LauncherPro, be he mentioned that most other launchers (ADW, GO Launcher, etc...) also have the ability to allow or lock home screen rotation.
In my case (LauncherPro), here's the process for locking your homescreen rotation while still allowing auto-rotation in other apps:
1) From home screen, go to Menu (button) -> Preferences
2) Select Behavior Settings
3) Uncheck "Enable Auto-rotation"
4) Done!
I hope this summary saves someone some time and fruitless searching.
Cheers!

----Original message follows---
Hi all,
I apologize for this question being a bit light on useful details, but my memory isn't so great.
I have a Mez, running 2.2 Froyo (updated from USCC), a custom ROM (I think), and a custom kernel (not sure which one).
I know that sounds insane, but there was a time a while back when I was flashing different things trying to find something that worked to my liking, and honestly just can't remember what combination I settled on.
It doesn't help that I'm still fuzzy on the whole ROM vs Kernel thing.
Anyway, here's the issue...
The videos I record on the phone have no sound.
You can hear a little background hiss, but no actual sound from the mic.
I can't remember if it worked before I updated to 2.2, but I suspect it did or I think I'd have noticed it before.
I guess I could flash everything back to stock and see if that fixes it, but I'd REALLY rather not do that, since it would take me so long to get it back sorted.
Is there a way to figure out exactly what I currently have installed on the phone?
Also, can anyone think of things I can do to troubleshoot the no audio issue?
Thanks in advance,
-Mike

This sounds like a issue I had on one of the earlier voodoo kernels. The fix was to download the voodoo control appear from the market and set recording preset to normal. This was fixed in the later releases of voodoo. Do you know which kernel your are on. That would help us narrow it down for you.
Edit. If you download the cpu spy app from the market you can pull your info up and see which kernel your on. It won't say exactly which one but should have the authors name in it so we can know which one your on to an extent.

Thanks for the quick reply scarmon.
I checked my voodoo sound options (already had the app) and I don't have a 'normal' recording preset.
My choices are:
Original
Balanced (new default) - with DRC
High Sensitivity - with DRC
Loud Environment - with DRC
I assume this means I have one of the newer versions of voodoo sound?
I'll get that cpu spy app and see what it says about my kernel.
Thanks!

Use original

Switched to Original, audio works now, thanks!
I wonder why the "new" profiles don't work?
Is it a limitation of this phone or a problem with voodoo?

The newer voodoo kernels have that issue fixed. I believe it was just a issue with the first few ec10 voodoo kernels. May wanna try one of the new OTB or imnuts kernels. The recording works on those as I have tried both.

Good to know, thanks.
Is updating to one of those kernels you mentioned a simple 'boot to recovery and flash zip from SD card' or something more?
Here's a screenshot of my current kernel info from cpu spy...
Does that help any? I don't recognize that author.
EDIT: That OTB kernel sounds really interesting.
Please refer to my above question about the simplicity or complexity of flashing that kernel over the one I have now.

Yeah u flash in CWM. If your on voodoo and 2.2 then you shouldn't have any issues. If u go with OTB make sure to get the voltage control app. So u can adjust it. Just go easy on the over clock and undervolting till u see how your phone reacts. If u go with OTB let me know and I will post my settings. Been running them for a while and they seem pretty stable.
Edit. Switched to PC to correct my spelling.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA Premium App

The above is what I'd try first. If you still find that you're having issues even with a new kernel, I'd consider flashing a new ROM as well.

K, This is what I have been running and it seems pretty stable for me. Keep in mind each phone is different and yours may not respond as well, or it may do even better then mine. I would suggest using the apply for now option in voltage control for a few days and once you know there good, you can apply at boot. Also nemisses included and great feature in CWM that allows you to remove boot settings in the event that you set something at boot and it doesn't work. You will get this once you flash the OTB v1.3 kernel. This will update CWM and the feature is under the advanced section of CWM if you need it. Here's the settings I have been using.
For the Scheduler I use BFQ
I set the Max Clock to 1200mhz
I have the following step and voltage drops enabled
200 mhz -100
400 mhz -100
600 mhz -75
800 mhz -75
1000 mhz -75
1200 mhz -50
With theses settings I am getting about a day of moderate use from my battery and great performance. You may play around with it and may get better results. Hope this helps.

OTB 1.3?
The thread I was watching only goes to v1.2 for OTB-reloaded.
What am I missing?
I also noticed that is was technically a Fascinate kernel, is that a problem?

It works on the mesmerize too. That's what I'm on. There should be a link in the OP that's has v 1.3. Its he second link at the bottom of the OP

Okay, I think I see the issue.
I was looking at this thread, whereas I think you're referring to this thread, right?
What's the difference between those 2 kernels, other than the OTB version?

one is Touch wiz and one is AOSP. If you are on stock Froyo you need touchwiz. AOSP will not work on stock ROM. You posted in the right one for OTB. This is the one you need for Stock Froyo

The 1.3 link is towards the bottom of the first post.

I don't think I'm on stock froyo, though.
As far as I can tell, I'm running SuperFrankenClean 0.292.
I base this on the files I found on my SD card while I was moving some stuff around just now.
In any case, it sounds like the touchwiz kernel is the one I need.
I'm downloading it now and will flash in a few.
Let me know if it looks like I'm about to frag something and I'll wait.
-Mike
OOPS! That should be SuperFrankenClean 2.9.2 ROM and EC10_ulv_voodoo kernel....I think.
Does that change anything?

Wait. Let me pull that ROM and I can tell you.
K this is showing to be used with touchwiz based kernels so u should be good to go.

[Q] Request: EC05 Kernel with keyboard fix and no other tweaks

I have tried the other Kernels available , Genocide, Twilight etc. The performance gains are real and it is amazing what the developers are doing.
However I have significant instability with these Kernels compared to Stock. I use my phone for business and stability is #1 priority for me. The only fix I really need is the skipped key press bug. I am running stock now but the keyboard is unusable without the fix.
Would one of the developers that knows what they are doing have time to compile a stock kernel with only the skipped keyboard fix implemented?
Thanks!

I'm like you, I want stability above all else and I only wanted the skipped keyboard fix. I don't care about overclock/undervolting and what not. Just want something stable. Although this kernel has some other minor changes, it's pretty much stock.
I just flashed this kernel this morning and haven't had any issues thus far but it's only been a few hours.
I'll report back tomorrow and let you know if I run into any issues.

Just wanted to say thanks again for compiling that kernel. Downloaded voodoo controller from the market as well. Didn't realize what I was missing as far as sound quality!
Not to rudely question your decision, but have you tried any customs that support voltage control? (Currently only genocide, but twilight is promising it soon). I used to have terrible instability, but it was because my phone couldn't handle undervolting... genocide + voltage control removing undervolt fixed that.
On a side note, if you decide to try genocide make sure you go to the end and look for the 1.0.1 test build, it fixed the kswapd0 high cpu usage bug (rare, but definitely made the phone less stable). I've had 18 hours of perfect uptime (not battery of course) since installing the update, and I have large tendancy to max out my phone.

AntonX kernel

I was this kernel for a couple days and it was almost perfect. However after a couple hours voodoo sound app would tell me the rom author broke the app and the kernel didnt support voodoo sound. I tried googling but no real answer as to how to fix it.
I downloaded the voodoo app from the devs site and uninstalled the one I had installed from play store. After I installed the app everything worked for a couple hours then the popup message about it being broke. A reboot would solve it but shortly after it would break.
This only happened on the versions with oc/uv natively activated. Finally used gremlin remover and started over. Only I flashed v1 and the voodoo app from the dev site. So far everything seems good.
Has anybody else noticed this? I like the voodoo sound processor better than dsp or the beats audio ports.
yes, also when there was no voodoo sound, just voodoo lagfix. Sometimes reinstalling the Voodoo app from market fixes this, sometimes you have to reinstall the rom. I think files get corrupted.
I seems that Supercurio (author of Voodoo Sound app) checks if his app was installed from market, even if it's free. This means that this app cannot be pre-installed with a ROM, it has to be downloaded by the user. Nothing really bad about it, just uninstall with Titanium and reinstall from market.
I think I figured it out. I could reproduce the results by using tegrak on the oc/uv native kernel like you would on the non-native oc/uv kernel.
@AntonX yes it is to avoid the cracked apps from being used. However he also has the app listed on his own site.
Hey, I have a question: Why don't we use NoLED instead of BNL as NoLED is free, too and it doesn't drain battery so much (I'm using it and still get 15+ hours w heavy use - always OC to 1.4)...so, What is the advantages of BNL over NoLED? (Have everyone ever tried NoLED?)...

NoLED has never really required kernel support. I've tried it and didn't like it. Your screen stays on, it drains you battery. I've also tried BLN (BackLightNotifications), my screen stays off and my battery drains less than with NoLED. Now users have a choice, they can use whichever one they wish. User demand for BLN is higher because it's better.
Ya, I see, at first I also had the sreen always on but seem like it had option to turn of the screen use the sensor so when in pocket or be up side down, it not drain much, anw just bcause of your post, I will go and test BLN now and will mark on battery drainage btween BLN and NL w srnsor option thanx u

I prefer NoLED too. In my experience the difference in battery drain is negligible. I just got used to the customized notifications that NoLED provides. Being able to tell what type of notification I'm getting without having to unlock the phone is very useful.

Hi guys
I have found that all AntonX's kernels after ver. 1b3 are having trouble to have more than 65MB RAM free working with Adrenaline Shot 14.1.
On ver. 1b3 I have 118MB RAM free without a problem.
For me it is fine, since I couldn't care less about UV/OC. Phone is already fast & battery drained as it as.

If i'm using VB final, what's the ideal kernel for me to use, to OC my phone?
So I just installed re installed tegrak today to boost up to a 1.2 (that's what I've always run). When I opened it I found it was already clocked at 1.4? I thought you had to enable the OC before it took effect?

I'm pretty sure that tegrak will see those higher frequencies regardless if you've set them... It should limit itself to whatever you set under governor scaling

[Q] Need root/rom/etc recommendations for an odd Captivate setup.

I just picked up this OEM-condition ATT Captivate today and after playing around with it, installing apps on it, fixing the rear speaker, etc...I decided I want to root it and try out a good/reputable/reliable ROM.
Here's the tricky part...this phone doesn't have service, nor will it ever. That's right. Absolutely no cellular service for this device. I'm using it strictly as a home phone for incoming/outgoing calls on my WiFi using GrooveIP + my google voice number(and maybe some games/radio/etc) and as an emergency phone when I'm away from home and in other WiFi hotspots. Otherwise I've got this crappy little tracfone that I use almost exlusively for texting and the rare phone calls I need to make. Just can't justify wasting money on a contract or any other setup with the way I use phones anymore.
So considering how I use this phone is it worth rooting? If so, what ROM could I go with that will be significantly better than the OEM setup but not require j33t hax to mess around with? If this were my main cell I wouldn't mind going all out on it like I've done with every other phone I've owned, but since I use it this way I can't really justify dumping a ton of time and effort in to it. I just want something clean, cool, and reliable.
If it helps any here's the apps I have/use currently...

Thanks, checking that out now.
The ROM mentioned by a poster above doesn't look to be supported anymore and I don't think it's compatible with my KK4 GB.
Could someone explain to me real quick how this ROM stuff works? To my knowledge this phone has a Firmware and an OS, and if that's the case, does the ROM replace the OS and/or the Firmware? Or is it installed and ran separate from my Firmware and OS? If there's a thread that explains this, a link would be much appreciated.
Answered my own question. I'm going with the Legend 5 ROM + CORN kernel 7.06 using the Odin method. Installed the kernel first, now trying to figure out how to get the pop-up menu when I plug the USB cable in so I can go to mass storage mode in order to put that ROM.zip file on there. I guess it doesn't do that anymore with the new kernel?
Install went without a hitch. Noticing a lot of visual differences, but not much in the way of performance differences.
Does this CORN kernel lock my phone in at 1.60GHz or did I misread something?
Does having this kernel mean my phone is now "rooted?"

Corn kernel gives you a ROOTED status, and enables you to use "schedulers and governors" and a 1.2Ghz CPU speed which is confirmed safe. Download CPU Spy and Voltage Control in play store so you can monitor your CPU usage and can adjust between schedulers and governors. I use Legend 5 ICS.
Not sure if I want to go as far as OCing anything. Just looking for a nice ROM that fits my needs.
Legend5 seems nice but it has some issues here and there and the way I use the phone doesn't really benefit from a majority of the changes it offers. I'll keep messing with it and see if I can like it a bit more.
takeoutttt, I got CPU Spy and Voltage control but what I'm seeing on my screen doesn't match any of the walkthroughs I found for VC.
On the main screen I have the Scheduler dropdown, Governor dropdown, and two slider bars...one for minimum speed and one for maximum speed. I see no other dropdowns, no other sliders, no advanced screen, no voltage controls, etc.
Options in scheduler dropdown; noop, deadline, cfq(default).
Options in governor dropdown; conservative, userspace, powersave, ondemand, performance.
Settings are default for now until I can figure this out.

battery gets SUPER HOT!
had to do a batt pull, boot into recovery, and go from there.
Ran fine when it first booted...benmark scores were very high...running very smooth...
Then after a reboot things got kinda wonky...
Seemed to be running rather hot...and I seemed to lose the ability to control clock speeds with system tuner...
I could sit in the app and watch the max/min speed change without any input from me...and setting it to 1512/384 manually would only last a matter of seconds...
...after the first reboot...i would set clock speeds...do something like run a quadrant test...go look at clock speeds and max would be at 1900 even though i set it at 1512...if i ran antutu at the end of the test it would come back as 1134mhz inn the system info even though I set it to 1512...
Based on my observations...it seems like the moment you put the CPU under any sort of stress...the clock speeds wig out and you lose the ability to control them...
Edit: I can repeat it every time I run a benchmark...quadrant, antutu, smart bench, whatever...the kernel completely loses the ability to control clock speeds..I noticed a similar problem with the Ziggy kernel that synergy uses...
The only non stock kernel that has worked right is 747...and in its ktweaker app there is a setting to "lock" clock speeds so that other apps can't change them...it specifically says "like benchmark apps." It may be something to look into...
Its a shame because on the initial boot up of this kernel my phone had never felt as smooth or performed as well...

This is due to thermald and is normal behavior. I include a tweaked thermald in my ICS kernel but I don't really like the way i implemented it. I'm going to think of a different way to handle this for my JB kernel.

So it would be "stress" related sorta...but more heat related specifically?...its a bummer because my phone does not like 1900mhz at all...and really starts to heat up/lag at that clock speed...
So if the kernel is going to "reset" all the time I'm gonna have to stick with 747 because its the only one (except stock vzw jb) that sticks no matter what I throw at it
Edit: I will however say...the kernel is completely compatible with Synergy 118...and like I said before...when it initially booted the phone was screaming...and performing better than ever...
So keep up the good work and I'll keep my eye on things...
I didn't run your kernel on ICS...wishing I had tried it out now lol

When I I run Vellamo it lists the kernel max at 1900mhz but when I check setCPU its locked at 1700mzh. I ran LK on ICS and it was simply amazing. It was the only thing I missed moving to JB. Plz remember that this kernel is just days old and it will continue to get better with updates from Imo. Keep the reports coming guys, it's the best thing to do to help.
What I've noticed is that neither this kernel or ktoonsez like Android tuner or system tuner. They make the kernel go haywire if using either one. I don't know why. That will b why ur min max doesn't match in k tweaker when u open after reboot. I use set CPU for imoseyons kernel and it works great on EVERY tw new base rom and so far has been the best I've tried and i test extensively. Lol.

Any chance of Call Recorder kernel support Imo? I only ask becaues several of your kernels for other phones I have owned did support it.

I would not use KTweaker with this kernel. I remember reading some where its specific for KT kernel. I have had issues using Android Tuner and system tuner on previoulsy used Rom/Kernels as well. I use SetCPU and it works great, I know its a paid app but its so worth it especially if you plan on using custom kernels. Theres a free setCPU version floating around but that app isnt supported anymore.
V.3 locks my cpu to 1900mhz...so i reverted back to v.2 and all is well. 11180 antutu bench mark @ 1520mhz, 10080 @1900mhz
For the ppl not needing to OC try v.2, u might have better results.

LG g2x eagles blood ICS

Hello
I have installed Eagles blood ICS 4.0.4 but after that I feel performance is very slow and battery discharges fast.
pls can anybody help me to improve performance.?
What was your flashing procedures? Did you do a FULL wipe to include format/system under mounts and storage? Did you flash a kernel with it? Gapps? I use the same ROM and its one of the fastest roms I've used and by far the fastest and smoothest ics for this device

I've actually found that out of all the ICS roms, this discharged battery the least.* Lag does happen, but it comes and goes (welcome to G2X hackfested ICS+ roms)
*Pain-N-Panic, does this rom ever go into an extreme deep sleep for you if left unattended? My main problem was that my alarms wouldn't go off at the right time, they'd only activate after pressing the power button to wake the device up.

Woah, no sir, not at all. That's a serious problem lol. However, I do not use my phone as an alarm so I can't honestly say so. One of the best things about this ICS ROM compared to some of the others is that it comes with a great kernel that can be overclocked and undervolted. I run mine at 1000 max and 216 min and undervolt everything at -50 with SetCPU. With this setting my battery life is on par with stock CM7, which in my opinion has the best battery life of any ROM for this phone. Another little goodie to add to this rom is the Lag free/dalvick fix. It's a build.prop mod that can be executed with script manager. You can find it in the g2x android development forum. However, if you decide to use this mod i recommend adding the scripts to your build.prop manually on your pc or text editor on your phone. I used the build.prop file that came with the mods pre-loaded and it actually slowed down the device a little. When I added them manually, eaglesblood has never ran smoother or been more snappier.
Haha, I wisened up and went back to CM7 and got an alarm clock.
I've seen the build.prop mod, but with CM7, it's not needed
If I do ever need my ICS fix, this would still be my go-to ROM.
Yup, I switch back and forth from cm7 and eagles blood as well. Whenever I need a working video camera is when I flash back to cm7. Wish they could get working video on ics.....damn drivers! Although the lag free fix isn't needed on cm7 it can be used if you wanna try it out. I myself have never tried but plan on doing so whenever I go back to it

I just followed procedure mentioned in the eaglesblood thread for this ROM.I did wipe/format and installation through CWM(but dont know is that a full wipe or have to do something more?) .I guess i flashed kernel as it is different from my previous GB.Also I did flash Gapps mentioned in the forum.
then I run script tune.sh mentioned in the thread for lag free runing using sm manager and keeping 'Run in root' option but no luck it's having lag.battery discharges within 8-10hr.How much your battery last for if you keep wifi, bluetooth options on?

Can you tell me how to and what to put in build.prop manually?
If you're keeping wi-fi AND bluetooth on, continuously, then 8-10 hours of battery life is to be expected. I never use blue tooth and I keep data and/or wifi OFF unless I am using it at the time. Once I finish using the internet for whatever it is that I am doing I shut it off. Instead of giving you a tutorial, I can just post a copy of my build.prop and you can use that instead.

I'm also agree to a--c and have observed same deep sleep issue don't know because of what but sometimes if we keep it unattended it goes on deep sleep. And in that case I have to remove battery, replace and restart.

Are you running stock or custom kernel? Do you have a CPU app? If so, what is your cpu clocked at (both min at max)?
Here's my build.prop file:

Thank you pain-n-panic.I just have to copy this build prop file and paste it in the folder where the previous build prop is,right? or their is another technique for that to do?
and about cpu it's clocked at 216Mhz-1.41 Ghz..kernel is 3.034-egb_p999-5 so my guess is it's came with EGB rom.
Call Audio
Does the call audio work in this ROM?

Yes, I like to use Root Explorer to navigate around my system files and folders. All you have to do is drop the build.prop into your system folder and hit yes when it asks you to replace the existing build.prop file. MAKE SURE that you read the directions in the thread and that you set the permissions correctly on the modded build.prop file. I do not recall what they had me set the permissions to but that is very important for you to set the permissions correctly on the modded build.prop before dropping into your system folder.
I figured that was the case....your CPU is maxed out at 1408. This is why your battery life is weak. Drop is down! 1015 mhz max WITH undervolting I still get smooth performance and great battery life. There is an awesome tutorial I read posted somewhere in the g2x forum about how to properly undervolt your device. Its a pain in the butt when you're in the process but so worth it in the end. Try searching it and giving it a try if battery life is a main concern for you.
YES call audio works on this ROM!

In both 4.0.3 and 4.0.4? Because I need a daily ICS ROM where I can use calls with audio.

Yup. I like 4.0.4 much better than 4.0.3. I used 4.0.3 for about 20 minutes and flashed back to 4.0.4, never even made a phone call so I can't honestly say how calling works on that ROM. I use 4.0.4 as my daily driver and calling works just fine.

Hmmm, is there any chance that the video recording can be fixed?
Nope. Video recording/playback is broken on every ics/hackfest for our device. We don't have the proper drivers
