Best Current Root'ing Tool - Thunderbolt General

I think I'm finally giving up on getting my thunderbolt running the way it should, what's the best way to root the thunderbolt at this time?
Software Version: 1.70.605.0

I just rooted my first Thunderbolt 2 days ago easily. Just google randomtek thunderbolt root.

Do yourself a favor and use the Revolutionary method. If not that, do the ADB method. If bricking your device and having no support for it interest you, find one of the one-click methods. Those do a very good job bricking devices or leaving the user totally screwed.

I like the old adb method because its easier to go back to stock for replacements, and revolutionary took almost as long because I had to keep entering my info to get a key that worked.

Revolutionary worked flawlessy for me (once I figured out what the hell I was doing)

Revolutionary is the easiest.

They do work for some people but they have a very high rate of failure compared to other methods. I would recommend the adb method or revolutionary, I personally like adb because I have to revert to stock on a weekly basis.

Agreed! Worked great!

Could someone please school me on this...but isn't the oneclick method pretty much the same as adb. only difference is that adb you have to manually type the commands and push the files to the phone. thanks.

The problem is without taking apart the script and finding out exactly what it's doing and what files it's supposed to be using, you can't tell if it works. Most of the one-click scripts came out before RUU 1.70. Forget it if you're devices is updated to RUU 2.11 GB. More of them will **** your device up than root it if you're on that update. We have a stickied thread on this subject in development by a guy who invented the ADB root method for the Tbolt. Every one-click script is based off of that, however his guide and files have changed over time to work with all the OTA's. The one-clicks don't keep up with it, and there's no way to know until you take the script apart. I've helped too many people try to recover from these stupid, lazy-ass one-click cop-outs on doing it right to help one more fool who's read what I've written and done the opposite.
So.... Basically, if you want a root method with support, you're going to use ADB or Revolutionary. Pretty simple.

Ahhhh, I see. the next one i root, i will definitely use adb then...thanks man.
I now feel like i've dodged a bootloop bullet.

It won't brick it later ! It's during the process that the risk of bricking it is higher. If it works, all is well.

I used revolution for the 1st time this week on a restored stock Tbolt. It worked great for me and was much faster than ADB.
The only thing I dont like is the new blue text on black screen that gets loaded for CWM. I find this hard to read compared to white text on a black screen.

You can replace the recovery console that they link to. I have to agree with you too, blue text on black background is not the easiest thing to read.

I did my first root a few days ago with revolutionary.io. I've been reading on rooting my bolt for quite awhile. I decided to wait until the GB OTA then work on the root process. I was one of the few who received the OTA and was extremely unimpressed!
I was amazed at how easy it was to gain s-off. I was nervous at first taking the plunge. Now that it's done I've flashed 2 different roms. Currently using synergy 262 and thoroughly enjoying it.
I have a biased opinion since I've never tried "one-click" or ADB. However, revolutionary works, easy to understand, and it's also easy to revert to stock it needed.

Went with synergy yesterday... love it so far

Thanks everyone I was able to get root with revolution, but then had to make the connection to download rom manager or how to load from the new bootloader.
Running BAMF right now, meh it's ok but was expecting more from what I felt people were so hyped up about.

i rooted my phone but now i can't install roms. and there's a verizon update that keeps auto-updating on my phone and that **** ****s it up

Will Revolutionary work with the new GB OTA installed? If not, what will? I am fed up with these uninstallable apps eating my battery.

Coming from Nexus One to MT4G

I love my N1 but battery life is an issue, and I have found little complaints about the battery life of the MT4G. So I figured I would give it a try.
I'm not a noob at Android or flashing... been doing it since my G1. That doesn't mean I want to dig into ADB overly much to root. Also I need to be able to unroot should the need arise.
So I have a few questions.
What root method is the most painless way, and still allows fairly easy unrooting?
Is there any practical advantage to the True S=off root?
I may use a mostly stock ROM with an OC kernel. Will most likely switch to CM7 when it hits RC status.
Is ClockworkMod the only recovery choice we have? I didn't find any others while looking through the threads.
Thanks in advance.

It is about as "one click" as you will get, and you can use it for only S-OFF and to allow you to flash eng hboot if you don't want sim/carrier unlock for some reason.

Yes. HTC is shipping newer devices already patched against older "rage" exploits. I'm of the mindset of root it while you can, if it's something that matters to you . It is also unlocking your phone at the lowest level possible via the radio, so you should be able to keep root even through forced OTAs, new ROMs, etc -- once it's done it's done!

Yes. I have seen a little chatter that Amon_RA is working on a version, but I have not seen one yet. CW is all we have, but it works well so no big complaints from me there.

I don't need sim or carrier unlock.
As long as I root it right away, and do not install any official updates, I should be fine right?
Amon_RA is my preferred recovery. Even though I use CyanogenMOD which uses Clockwork for official downloads and flashing.
Found the thread for unrooting gfree... thats good then
Make sure to install engineer hboot as well
I'm new to the MyTouch 4g as well so here's my advice.
1) do it the true way. I tried using the permanent way without gfree and I couldn't get root to stick on my one day old phone.
2) I've seen thee best battery life with evil Z rom.
3) make sure you have the good screen before you start this process in case you need to return it.
4) back up your stock recovery and rom! Just because they are online is no excuse!

came from a nexus one as well, but had a few phones in between.
The mytouch 4g is solid! Clockwork recovery isn't too bad, itll get the job done, simple rooting process and all. Its about the same as the nexus one I would say, simple and no problems. Roms are pretty solid here, cyanogen nightlies for gingerbread are good, battery life is around 2 days for me on average. The ice glacier is like stock and that is one of the better roms to play with as well. Enjoy the mytouch 4g till you find a new toy
Sounds good.

is it or is it not safe to root the TB?

i just for the TB today. i returned my X2 which was laggy and im happy with the TB. i see all kinds of posts bout how people are bricking there phones so i would like to ask all of you,
is it safe to root and install a custom rom? if so what is the safest way to do so?
Thanks so much...
Its all up to you if you feel comfortable rooting your phone or not, there will always be some inherent risk involved.
I have mine rooted and I have had no problems with it and thoroughly enjoy it.
Follow JCase's root method that's stickied in the development section if you choose to root.
A lot of the concern about bricking is from the leaked GB radio that some people are using so you could always stick with Froyo if you want to avoid that risk.
I rooted my Thunderbolt after I had it for a week. The first week being unrooted was terrible. The battery life was horrible, and I contemplated returning it for an iphone.
Then I rooted, which was easy as long as you follow the directions posted in the threads. Now I can easily get a full day of use with my stock battery... off the charger for 17+ hours with 4G, bluetooth and wifi always enabled, and GPS enabled sporadically.
I'd say read up on the root process. Then read up on different roms. I use Das BAMF 1.7, and Imoseyon's 2.6 lean kernel. If you determine that root isn't for you, there's easy ways to unroot.
It's not the rooting process that is bricking phones. Rooting is perfectly safe, as long as you follow the steps. The bricks have occurred after flashing the recent Gingerbread leak. If you stick with a Froyo-based rom, you will be fine.

That was also always my undertsanding, that all rooting does is give you permissions that would normally not be available. What you choose to do with those permissions once you have root is the risky part.

Mine was one of the few that did brick and I had to send it off for 2 weeks before it was replaced.
The first thing I did when I got home with my new Thunderbolt was root it and flash a Froyo ROM.

But you were running the leaked GB for a few days prior to bricking, right?

I was running the leaked GB when my Thunderbolt bricked.
I meant to quote the OP just to let him/her know it IS safe to root.
I just got my new Thunderbolt a few days ago and the first thing I did with it was root it, and this was after my first one bricked.
As someone who bought a TB a week after it came out, screwed up my first root attempt, got it the second time after "unrooting" and has since loaded a ton of different ROMs, radios, and kernels, I can safely say you have nothing to worry about.
As long as you're following the instructions, that is. Can't account for human error, after all
All these bricked phones are being bricked by people who flashed the newest leaked gingerbread (gb) radio onto their devices in order to run the leaked gb rom. Even flashing the newest gb rom+radio didn't mean your device was going to be bricked to sure, it was just a few whos were bricked. If perfectly safe to root as long as you follow instruction and I don't see anything risky about installing apps with any permissions as long as you get the app is from a creditable market place.
The long way of rooting seems easy for me all I did was get adb running and copy pasted the commands on the command prompt.
Yep. Definitely safe as long as you follow the directions and stay away from the Gingerbread radios.
I rooted mine two weeks after I got it. Hubby finally caved and let me root his after seeing the differences.
Grab you an md5 checker and give it a shot!
thanks everyone for your help...i appreicate it.
i am rooting it now!
what radio should i stay away from as far as causing the reboots?

What everyone else said there is some risk(minisule) if you stick with froyo you should be fine, if you end up with the reboot problem post rooting flash the radios to the old versions and your tb life will be much more sweet.

The gingerbread radio. Any froyo rom will be good to go.
rooted and flashed a new kernel with no issues thus far.yay.
Couple questions. First, which is the easiest and safest root method? Droid 2 rooting was a simple one-click affair. I see lots of methods around, including automated, one-click roots. Jcase's post ([ROOT] MR1/OTA PermRoot + Unlock Bootloader - Safer/Easier 5/12/2011) looks pretty complicated. Is this the one I should do?
Second, I am really tempted to flash a gingerbread rom (th3ory b1.7), and I've flashed several GB roms to my droid 2 before recently getting the TB. If I carefully follow the instructions in the threads, am I pretty safe, or is the GB radio thing still pretty risky?

1. The easiest is the one-click method. However, if you are not familiar with adb, I highly recommend doing it the way described in jcase's thread. That way you get experience with adb. Anyone even considering rooting needs to know basic adb commands.
2. To my knowledge, there have been no bricks with the GB radio posted here. But remember there are no 100% guarantees when rooting/flashing your phone. Good luck
wish people would stop blaming the radio,my first bolt bricket on stock froyo after the first ota update, never had gingerbread on it. as far as rooting goes if you eant the phone to work to itd potential you need to root it and flash a custom rom that or wait tol vzw and htc decide to update it to gingerbread or even icecream for that matter

[Q] Trojan in root file?

I found the sticky with instructions about how to root the Infuse but, when I downloaded it, Kaspersky blocked it stating it contained a Trojan. I know there are false alarms off and on, but it makes me nervous, nevertheless. Also, I can't tell if it will work with Froyo 2.2.
Can someone confirm that the file is okay? It comes across as http://.....rageagainstthecage I thought it was odd since that's not the file name. It also crashed Kaspersky, which really did make me nervous.
The sticky is at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1081072
and the file is....
File Type: zip InfuseRootUnlock_v4.zip - [Click for QR Code] (1.58 MB, 13676 views)
Thank you for your help.
To gain root access to android, you have to basicly find a weakness in the code and exploit it. Rage against the cage is such an exploit.
People have been using this method for some time. If I'm wrong someone please correct me,. So it will trigger a good antivirus.

Well, after reading your reply, I went through pages and pages of posts on this sticky. I found rageagainstthecage in a few posts, so decided the file is okay. Thank you so much. I had read a lot of posts, but I didn't see any with rageagainstthecage in them, but then I found a couple. Thank you again.
Now, if I can just figure out how to root this thing, I'll be thrilled! Off to the root forum
Thank you again.
RATC is fairly old - most people here use SuperOneClick.
Do note that due to its nature, I believe a lot of antivirus programs treat SOC as a trojan.
The problem is that the same paths we use to get root are the same paths malware uses to get root. That's why a lot of the methods for rooting were closed in Gingerbread.
For Gingerbread, the usual way to grab root on Samsung devices is to flash a kernel that roots your device using an initramfs script.
I'm glad to hear you say that! I decided I'd try Super One Click because the other one just isn't doing anything. I think I'm supposed to type in a command, but I have no idea what command to type in. I used a Blackberry for 7 years, so the Android OS is new for me, well one month old, anyway. I'm still getting used to it. So glad I left Blackberry behind...just wish I'd done it sooner. <edit> Where can I find information about which version to download? Good grief there's a lot of reading on that post

Thank you again. I'm heading there now, but I just read something that makes me nervous. I should probably stop reading. I guess I'm a little gun shy since I don't know the system yet. "It IS a dangerous tool in the wrong hands...Exercise common sense"? What does "common sense" mean? "Fork bomb"? I'll need to Google that one. I know root gives the owner admin rights, but how it does it, I haven't a clue. I guess I have to do more reading...good grief
"rageagainstthecage is a root exploit via a fork bomb.
It IS a potentially malicious payload, BUT it is being used with owner's consent to root the phone.
The DreamDroid malware use exactly same payload - they are trojans, but this is a helpful tool.
It IS a dangerous tool in the wrong hands, but this is a root exploit, so you should exercise common sense and a little understanding of what it does and how it works.
That's a wonderful video. Thank you very much. Now, I'm just going to read more about how dangerous this can be so I can understand what I'm doing when I root. I'd like to exercise common sense, but I don't have any yet. I'd love to donate. I guess I should get a paypal account
The easiest way that I have found to root is found in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116251
Just follow the instructions in the OP, and it's quick and easy. I trust it way more than super one click. Basically, the thread is about an odin package that takes you back to stock, and it just so happens to be pre rooted and has the modified recovery already installed. With super one click, you still have to install the modified recovery after rooting before flashing a rom, which I found to be cumbersome. If you use the ultimate unbrick, you get root and modified recovery in one easy package, and you can go right to flashing roms afterwards. Also, it's helpful to know how to use the ultimate unbrick just in case you end up bricking your device in the future.
Hope I helped. =]

The package referenced above returns you to "almost" stock - it's stock + root + recovery.
The other option is to use Odin or Heimdall to flash a custom kernel that injects root from the initramfs. For Froyo, I believe the Defuse kernels will do this.
For Gingerbread, any of the Gingerbread kernels will do this - but when you flash the kernel you'll also have to flash a Gingerbread ROM.

[Q] Any safe/easyish way to root my Samsung GS3?

I know you're going to say use search function, but everything I keep finding is very complex and difficult, or the downloads are no longer available. And sometimes there's a disclaimer saying that doing it that way could brick the phone. I wanted to try oneclickroot but it doesn't seem to be available at this time. So obviously the question is whether or not there's a (somewhat) simple way to root my GS3. I rooted my Droid Incredible twice and it didn't take more than 5 steps and 10 minutes each time, it appears to be A LOT harder for the GS3, and it's pretty much scaring me out of trying it, out of fear of bricking my phone. Thank you!

So I could brick my phone even if I follow the instructions perfectly? :\ That seems like a huge risk. Would that be covered under warranty lol?? I just got this phone a week ago.
And I have a few questions before I start. Where on my phone do I put the superuser and bootloader folders? The root of the phone? Or in a specific folder? And when I run the Samsung USB driver folder one of them keeps failing. It's called SAMSUNG_ANDROID_SCH-i535. Here's the error message. http://imgur.com/Z3RRp. My device isnt getting unplugged and it always fails. I tried 3 times.
I had issues installing the drivers too. I installed kies then connected my phone. After that all went smooth I re tried flashing via Odin and it worked perfectly. FYI I ran it on my wife's win vista 64bit system tho Odin runs fine on any current-ish windows.

I installed Kies and I'm still getting the device unplugged error. :\
And do you know where I would put the folder for the superuser and bootloader on my phone?
Edit: Nevermind I tried it again, but this time I waited 5 minutes after the error, not intentionally, I just never closed the box. And it starting downloading it again in another slot and then it worked...SCH-i535 Successfully Installed. Yay.
But I still need clarification on where to put the Bootloader and superuser files on my phone. Do I need to put them in downloads? Or in the root of my phone like on my old Droid Incredible. I don't wanna mess that part up.
I had them in my external card root directory. However it's doesn't really matter where you put the zip files as long as you know where you put them when you go to flash it. During the flashing process it installs them in the correct directory.
I'm new to the GS3 on Verizon, just got the phone Thursday, was rooted that night. Granted I'm coming from Sprint's GS2 so I'm familiar with Odin, however, just as pdykstra said, it's not as scary as it seems.

I would start with this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1801106
It will unlock your bootloader, add CWM, and root your (arriving) phone (in that order). If there are any dead links, I should be able to help out (except for the drivers - you can either try ADBSetup or use Linux to unlock the bootloader).
I would skip Juopunutbear unless you are planning to flash every other week . I did it, it's no big deal, but the best I got out of S-OFF was to change the start-up logo (before the bootanimation).
Hope this gives an idea.

So what if I don't have Admin privileges on a computer? Will Fastboot and ADB still work? I don't know about the drivers...
And I had the original myTouch 3G and I installed the Visionary (the one with the yellow triangle with the lightning bolt hitting a guy) APK file. I was able to flash CWM Recovery after Visionary rooted the device. Is it possible to flash ROMS using CWM instead of unlocking the bootloader?

Probably not. I haven't seen a situation where drivers can install without admin priv.

That would be gaining root through an exploit. If I recall correctly, all of those have been sealed in future OTA's. The only way that makes sense (that is, not trying every rooting package out there) is to unlock the bootloader first. It's really not that bad.

The MT4GS I'm getting is running Gingerbread. If I use GingerBreak APK to root the phone and install CWM, can I still back up the stock OS? And for future reference, how would I keep the baseband once I'm ready to flash ROMs? Like the IMEI and stuff like that?
And the guide that you directed me towards is slightly complicated.
Is there an APK that can turn S-Off? if so, how reliable is it?
And for future reference (I like saying that) the ETA for device delivery is Wednesday on the East Coast of the United States.

Getting out of my comfort zone here, but that should be possible. CWM will be able to back up system and boot, effectively the stock OS.
Haven't heard of people losing their IMEI's with this phone, nor of any backup to protect it, so that should be fine.
When I went through it, I found the guide a bit daunting as well, but you get used to it (alternatively there is below, which I never used).
There is no APK to S-Off (too complicated for a user app, and your phone would be upside down half the time thus making the screen unreadable), but there is this that can speed up the process:

This can root as well. It's no APK, but should get the job done.

*cringes* Windows admin priiivveellleges.....?
And can we just talk about this through PM? the XDA site is destroying my data. The app is better.
s-off has gotten easier. juopunutbear (or however you spell it) is no longer needed. rumrunner s-off is by far easier to use. this is what I used combined with the windroid program to root.
I bought one from a liquidator online. Brand new, out of the box, with the plastic still on the screen and stuff. Unmarked battery, though. Charges a bit too fast. Was labelled as "refurbished" but came in the original manufacturer box with original PC sync cable and chager. I found a way to root the stock ROM without S-OFF, just with CWM. All I had t do was flash a 2.3.6 ZIP that had the SU binary and the .apk file for the Samsung Galaxy Admire. It works on the really stupid Huawei model, too. Which, I installed the Raspberry Pi variation of SliTaz on it, and it works great! But as soon as I came back to my apartment from work I unlocked the bootloader(HTC model), installed CWM, flashed the ZIP fro 1.4 DS, and then did a backup of my old non-functional broken peice of shi...Yeah, and then then flashed the boot image through fastboot, and then restored my backup. My point is, though, my Minecraft PE and my Ravensword 2 installations diappeared after restoring the backup. Any ideas of why this happened?
