So this is a strange sort of behavior which isn't exactly crippling, but is rather annoying.
I'm using a deodexed, de-bloated version of EH09, although this happened on earlier ROMs I used so I wouldn't attribute it specifically to the ROM. To the best of my knowledge, I'm using the latest beta version of Swype.
Sometimes, after writing a text message or news post or something of the like, when I hit the power button afterwards to turn off the screen, it will instead trigger a screen capture and save it to the SD card. This behavior stops once I hit the back softkey a few times, but today (and for the first time so far) the softkeys were nonresponsive. Because it happens after writing something of reasonable length, I'm suspecting that some combination of keypresses are responsible for launching the screen capture service.
I don't have any screen capture apps installed, so it must be something integrated into the ROM. Anyone else experience similar behavior, or have any thoughts?
Known problem with our phones; the back and menu buttons sometimes press themselves in low signal areas or during data usage. Reason is not known.
Right, I've noticed that behavior as well. But what does that have to do with the screen capture service?

It's built into touchwiz that if you hold menu and hit the power button it takes a screenshot, if I recall correctly. So if the button glitch is happening and causing the menu button to be pressed, and you press the power button, it takes a screenshot.

Oh, I see. Well, I believe the ROM I'm using has Touchwiz stripped out, though I'll admit to being a bit unclear as to how much of the underpinnings consist of TW stuff. But I just tried the menu-long-press shortcut, and it didn't initiate the screen capture service.
Thanks, though.

Hello all:
I have been experiencing a particularly vexing problem with my captivate. At random intervals, the search interface displays on the screen without any of the buttons on the bottom of the phone being pressed. This seems to be particularly true when holding the phone in landscape (playing Angry Birds). My hand is nowhere near the end of the phone with the buttons, so I don't understand how this can be happening.
Any advice/help that can be offered will be appreciated.

Happens on mine every now and then too, usually when I'm driving and the officer is mounted on the windshield, so my hands are no where near it.
I've seen other posts about it. I don't think there's any fix except a replacement.

capacitive button problem. I have it too but on the menu key. Rare but very annoying. Perhaps its dust?
There are quite a few people complaining about it.
even my search key gives this issue.....isnt there a way to disable that key..??i rarely use it....
btw, wouldnt it be cool if the search key was changed to a camera key for takin pictures.....its way lot easier than focusing and clicking by tapping on the screen...

Hmm, if yours has the problem, it would be rather detrimental to performance if you were to map it to camera shutter, wouldnt it?
Thanks to all. I had searched but hadn't seen anyone that had the same problem (time to brush up on my search skills?). I will consider a replacement, because it really sucks when I have a perfect shot in Angry Birds and the search interface comes up.

My original Captivate had a problem where the Home button would get "stuck".
The phone would start buzzing and going to the Home screen violently and over and over again.
I got it exchanged.
Probably a similar issue.
Yep, same problem here. Although I haven't seen it happen since I went back to stock and did the OTA update through Kies.
Not sure if that actually is why it's not happening though.
you can edit the Melfas-touchkey.kl file and disable the search key
system/usr/keylayout/Melfas-touchkey.kl

You can do better than that; you can assign it to the CAMERA, just replace the text SEARCH with CAMERA in that file and reboot. I tried it, it works, and pressing the key while in camera mode takes the picture! It's quite nice actually. Long press for voice search no longer works, however.
Q: Why do I frequently end up going to a quick search when I hit the home or back keys?
I have a stock Capitvate running 2,1-update1 / i897UCJH7. FWIW, I'm using the Swype keyboard. I have a number of apps installed. This unit seems perfect in every way (GPS and everything else) except for the following:
Frequently, when I press either the "home" or "back" key, I end up looking at the keyboard and a "Quick Search Box" rather than the home screen or the previous screen. That's not right but even worse, it often appears I am in a loop; pressing either key again frequently does not take me back a screen or to the home screen.
This may be associated with Vlingo. If I force stop Vlingo, the problem is decidedly less frequent but it still occurs. Vlingo tech support will only say their program should run on any Eclair unit although they do not specifically support the Captivate.
I have disabled all of the search options on the phone thinking search is popping up by design. I suppose I could uninstall Vlingo for a final test but I thought if I stopped the program that would eliminate it from consideration.
Maybe I'm missing something somewhere and I'd appreciate your helping me figure out what it is. Thanks in advance.

If you do full reset and run the phone with no apps installed and it still occurs, it is the phone and you should exchange it for a new one. Others have experienced this, and many times the only recourse is replacing the phone.
restore it first
I had that happen on one that got lost. I thought it was from staying in my pocket and stuff pressing up against the buttons and wearing them out.

Hello!
I'm experiencing some problems with my o2 Touch Pro.
Hardware buttons on the bottom of the phone (d-pad, home, back, call, end call) are not working properly (they work fine only 20% of the time, it's random i guess).
When i press "call" button, device responds as if i pressed the "left" button. It's very annoying. The circle used to zoom in, and out around the "enter" button is problematic as well. It zooms - but but in a very chatoic way - a bit of of zoom in, then zoom out, another zoom in. Functions are just messed up.
Another time, it's all working...
How can i fix it? Is it a hardware problem?
I'm using the Energy Rom - titanium version.
Thanks for your help in advance...
Honestly, if you can't deal with it, get another device. Either that or stick with the stock ROM, less problematic (you can also keep the full function of the d-pad) but then again it may introduce other issues. Someone mentioned this being more a hardware than a software issue. Since I cannot reproduce this on my at&t Fuze, that is all I can suggest on my end.
I get some of that with my fuze; mostly, the d-pad doesn't read gestures properly. If I run compact heaps (from sk tools) periodically, it helps. Soft resetting obviously helps as well. I think it's more of a hardware issue. My problems have definitely gotten worse over time. You can also check out this tool (from an HTC test rom dump; can't remember where I got it). It's a debugger for the d-pad. At least you can see how accurately the button presses and gestures work.
Thanks.
I wanted to assign the camera shutter button to wake up the phone. I've used other lockscreen apps like Go Locker, Live Screen, and Magic Locker and they all allow the volume rocker to wake the screen, but not the camera button. I then tried the app "buttonremapper" or something like that that I found on xda. It didn't work.
I found this folder:
/system/usr/keylayout/
with the files:
AVRCP.kl
cpcap-key.kl
edison-keypad.kl
evfwd.kl
omap-keypad.kl
qwerty.kl
usb_keyboard_102_en_us.kl
Everywhere I saw:
212 Camera
(all but the first two files)
I changed it to:
212 Camera WAKE_DROPPED
(and added this to cpcap-key.kl)
It worked...but not always. Every now and then, it would not wake up with the camera button (especially if I hadn't had the screen on in a while). Any ideas? Is this a foolish endeavor?
Also, the Search button sometimes does not bring up the search function (long-pressing doesn't bring the voice search) right after unlocking the screen. The haptic still works, but the search doesn't pop up. The ability returns if I press the home button first. The same goes for the camera hardware button not opening the camera app but working after I press home first. This was happening even before my modifications and only intermittently.
My mod is not at all important, but I'm curious why it doesn't work all the time. I'm not sure if it's related to my buttons not working regularly, but I suspect it does.
I am using Go Launcher and tried a variety of lockscreen apps. I just did a factory reset last night to see if it fixed it, but it didn't. I reloaded a minimal amount of apps. I am using the stock camera at this point (I didn't reload camera zoom fx--but it had the same issue before the factory reset anyway). Could this be related to an app or is there something deeper at fault? I doubt it's a hardware defect since it is corrected by touching the home button.
If you think you have an idea but need more info, let me know. I appreciate any suggestions!
hey guys, i noticed today that sometimes when i press the home button to wake the phone it doesnt react...when i press it again it works normally....this happened to me two times....did anyone see this?
That sounds like a hardware issue. The home button synthesize sensor must not be recognizing the pressure you are applying to the button. Did this happen after a software update?
I'm having the same issue with the home button being super spotty and straight not registering when I push the home button. This is super irritating. I constantly have to press the button and sit like an idiot while it does nothing, then press again.

Hmm that could be a number of things. It could be the hardware. It could be the update that you've installed that is causing wake lock on the device. Since your phone is covered by the one year limited warranty, I think you should contact Samsung and request an exchange/replacement. You can, however, try a factory reset to see if the wake lock problem goes away.
Ok I've been able to replicate the problem 100% if I choose. It is most definitely a hardware problem. If the home button is pressed on the left corner of the button it fully depresses and even clicks. But it doesn't register as so.
Definitely a hardware issue.
My phone had this issue as well where it wouldnt register soft clicks or off center taps and I would regularly get missed presses when using the phone (unless I pressed the button hard). I had verizon send me a replacement. The new phone just showed up, and the home button works almost perfectly. I can still get it to not register if I try really hard to push extremely lightly, on the very edge of the button with my finger nail, but its easily 100x better than the previous one.
The new button is also almost silent while the old one made kind of a cheap plastic click sound like it rattled slightly. It also feels like it requires a tad less force to press than the old button. The old button I could easily recreate the issue 100% of the time by just pressing lightly or pressing off center and it would regularly bother me while using the phone.
Buttons don't work

I have warratny but from shop they sadi that buttons working i don't now what to do pls for help.

Here is a "solution" that has worked for me. My S6 is the Verizon variant, but I think these steps will work on any Service Provider.
Settings > Accessibility > Dexterity and interaction > Assistant menu
From here, toggle the switch to "ON". This will create a hovering circle with a window with four panes inside it. If you interactive with the hovering circle it will open a new window in which you have access to the back and recent apps buttons via an onscreen button.
Not sure what has disabled the hardware buttons, but this should give you access via onscreen software.
I know it's not a true fix, but a work around.
If someone finds a true fix, please post it! But in the meantime ...
I hope this helps!
Hello,
I had a S6 and after 4 days I noticed loose home button: it made noise the tap on it (not press). And also didn't registered clicks on the left side.
I exchange it for another and this one is almost perfect. I notice the left side of the butto to be a bit pressed. Anyway, I suspect a harware issue.

My home button stopped working all together right after an update. How can I remove this issue? Every thing else works perfectly. Please help!
I have issues with my home button as well, it's "loose" and rattling. It has always been a bit loose but the last few months it has gotten worse and worse, it started to require more and more pressure to register the press (way beyond the pressure needed for it to *click*). As of now it does not even work at all, no matter how hard I try pressing it.
I've tried the assistant menu that's mentioned here in the thread but I just find the menu annoying. Instead I have learned to live with it for the time being, I just multitask to instagram or facebook and then spam the back button until I'm back at home.
100% hardware issue.
Apparently it's possible to replace the home button, and there are replacement home button to buy from ebay, but the replacement procedure is ridiculuos. The home button is basically the last thing you will demount from the phone when disassembling it.
I found a temporary fix by dabbing the home button with Isopropyl, this made it like new again. But two days later it's back to as it was before, or maybe even worse.
Annoying as hell, especially since this is a result of poor quality control from Samsung.
Update: Found a nice little app on play store called "button remapper" which lets me rebind the default system buttons without requiring root, i have rebinded the "recent apps" button to act as a home button instead, and a long press opens the regular "recent apps". Seems to be an alright workaround.
Just go to samsung shop, let them see,if no exchange or replace or fix, take their demo phones like s8 (2017) throw on to the floor and then take any phone u want, leave the s6 phone alone (make sure it is factory reseted).Ran away and shout #ALLAHUAKBAR!
