Temp root behavior? - HTC Sensation

I am considering temp rooting my phone so that I can remove/freeze some bloatware, but I am not certain how it will work. Given that temp root goes away if you reboot, will the frozen/removed apps be unfrozen/reloaded it time I restart my phone? Does it make a difference if I use Titanium Backup to do this or is there another method that makes the freezing/removing permanent? I am not ready to fully root and S-OFF my phone since I am already on my second unit and I need to make sure I wont be sending this one back as well.

I want to remove bloatware as well.

So anything you have done requiring root will stay that way (in this case freezing apps) after you lose root when you reboot?

Are you sure about that with temp root and s-on? Irc, you need to write to something to freeze apps and have them stick.

And are you using temp root or permanent root?

[MOD] Remove Bloatware apps.

Follow this link on how-to. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829662
I can confirm that this mod works for the MyTouch 4G. I've tested it, and was able to remove some of my unwanted apps.
Yes, I can reboot my phone, and the apps will not appear again.
Please read the warning as you will no longer recieve OTA's once you do the MOD.
I am in no way responsible for any damage done to your phone.
Instead of force removing I put them on freeze. Will that stop OTA as well?

Running Visionary will prevent root period until you remove it. If you remove apps then you have to go back to stock by way of fastboot. If you freeze, then just restore what was frozen and remove visionary. Then you should be good.
Ok but my question wasn't answered. Let's say I don't restore the apps and I keep visionary with my phone rooted. Will I still get the OTA?
myTouch4G (Glacier)
How would this work with a full reboot (no fastboot)? No writes or deletes can be done on the system partition. Unless, Titanium is freezing the app, in which case the app wouldn't even appear in the app drawer. It's still there however. Have you checked with Root Explorer to determine whether they exist in /system/app after reboot (fastboot off)?

He said it blocks otas, you won't need them since that's the point of being rooted....You can get rooted otas from devs here, which is what xda has done for years.

He said "force removing" will block OTA. I'm talking about just "freezing" them. I understand being rooted will get rooted OTAs from the devs and that's faster then actually waiting.

I removed VISIONary, Fastboot off, did a full reboot, checked /system/app and can tell you that I no longer have the apps tha have been removed in my phone.
OK, thanks for the reply. How does even make sense in light of the fact that any changes to /system are only reflected in the cache, and NOT to the system partition on NAND locked devices?
I have another question. After force removing the unwanted apps. Does the space that was being used by the apps return to the device?

The bloatware apps exist on the /system partition. Your installed user apps go to the /data partition, so the answer is no.
Oh ok cool. Thanks for the fast reply.

Perhaps you missed the point that both G2 and MT4G are both write-protected so the only chance of getting OTA for those handsets (at least for now) is official T-mo update.

I'm sure he means AFTER perm root is found (if it is), not currently.

I used Titanium to freeze some apps (hate faves popping up all the time). After doing a full reboot, they were still frozen. I could not find a few like Yahoo mail, which keeps on popping up.
It seem that available memory went up as a result - over 1gb rather then just under.
I think I will stay with this rather then forced removal through the terminal emulator.

[Q] How to UNROOT from fre3vo?

I'm about to finally temp-root for the first time. Everything is ready. But how can I cleanly unroot the phone? My phone is under insurance and 1-year warranty, and I'm only gonna be removing bloatware.
I think all you have to do is reboot and remove the apps.
Reboot your phone.
What do i have to remove? Or should i not remove anything at all? Will I still be covered by warranty after i unroot?
Remove superuser.apk and busybox.apk if you have them installed, reboot abd you are done
And yes, after that you are still covered by warranty.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using Tapatalk
How do i know if they're installed or not? Just want to be safe.
You'll see apps like superuser in your app drawer. You can see an extensive list of apps installed by going to Manage applications in your settings. Just make sure those things are uninstalled. That doesn't matter though because if you ever send your phone in, just do a factory reset, and everything will be back to normal.

Dude.....it's temp root, meaning temporary. As people explained it will go away after a reboot. If you really need to send it in and are paranoid about 'traces', simply do a factory reset.
**Just to be clear, until S-OFF is achieved we are really not removing anything, just disabling it.
You can't remove bloatware with temp-root, as we currently don't have proper system access. You can only disable them.
As for how you get rid of temp root: Go read the posts regarding temp-root, then you might understand...
Do temp root than do temp perm root and run the batch file and it will remove bloatware. If u want it to go back to normal just reboot

What do you think guys? Will this work? Is it safe to use? Can I use it to remove bloatware ? Which console app should I use?
Temp root + s-on = only stop bloatware from running on one boot. When you reboot, you'll lose temproot, plus all it's changes since nothing can be saved.

Your bloatware will stay gone if you freeze/delete with TB. This is a good option for people who just want to remove bloatware.

Even with s-on? That doesn't make any sense since you need to write to /system to freeze apps.

Galaxy S Blaze Rooted, Now What?

Hello all! I'm a total noob to the Android world. I've been a user of iPhone for the past 3 years. Lol. Just picked up the new Galaxy S Blaze yesterday and I've already Rooted it. I know lots of Dev's are on the way for this device since its still relatively new. But my question is, what can I really do with it now that its been rooted? How do I get rid of some of the "Bloatwares" on it? I know there are lots that T-mobile put on the phone. Thanks for any help!
to remove the bloat, i used titanium backup. Not only is it good for removing the apps, but its also great to backup and restore apps when/if we get roms.
Titanium is a must...other things you can use to remove bloat as well are ES file Explorer or Root Explorer. Root Explorer is not free, but I use it regularly. I always suggest renaming files rather than deleting them.
Can't Get the Computer to Recognize The Phone
Thanks for the replies. So, I rooted my phone and using Titanium Backup, I deleted some of the apps that I figured that I don't need. Well, now I might have deleted one too many? I cant get the Computer to recognize the phone at all when I connect it using the USB. Its not the driver the issue 'cause it was working previously when I rooted the phone. Any ideas how I can fix this? Help please...

Or use ES File Explorer's built in app manager.

Before uninstalling an app with Titanium, I use the "Freeze" option first. It stops the app. If i have no problems, I delete it. I made the mistake of uninstalling something that someone on here said was safe to uninstall, and I started getting errors. I went back to stock to fix it.
I'll also point out that I seriously can't tell any difference at all between "freeze" vs. uninstall.
What I mean by that is, if I freeze an app....it's effectively gone. The apps I knew I wouldn't use, or wouldn't want on the phone I first backed up, and then hit uninstall. If TitaniumBackup gave me the prompt about the app not being deodexed (basically, it's kinda like integrated in the rom if it's not deodexed) I would just freeze it. I mean, seriously, who cares about the stupid free megabytes counter in the phone.
I'd never know the difference between freezing and uninstalling.
In short.......hooray for freeze!

Weird. Ok, note to self, don't un-freeze any of the apps I have frozen!
In all seriousness though, did it just not let you and you reloaded to get access to the app, or did the phone fall down and go boom, and you HAD to reload?

Yes, I froze the BadgeProvider 1.0 and the phone had some problems. I went to un freeze the app and it said it was un freezing but never did. So I just reloaded my backup.
If everything is working fine on your phone I don't see any problem with leaving them frozen.
Yeah, that wouldn't be something I would freeze myself. You'll stop getting missed call notifications, or so I read anyway.

You can hold vol up and vol down, press power while holding both volume buttons until it vibrates, then let go off power while still holding both volume buttons until recovery pops up.
Or download quickboot if you're already rooted.
OR adb reboot recovery from your computer.

Another good uninstaller/app freezer is Root Uninstaller Pro. I used that to freeze and/or eliminate my T-MO and samsung bloat/crapware. It also gives me a bit more control over other options involving any apps on my phone, such as letting me back it up or obtain it again from Play Store should I need to do so.

I've found that it works best when the phone is hooked up to your PC. Hold down volume up, volume down AND power all at the same time. Once you see the following message on your phone, take your finger off the power button only (being careful not to accidentally do it twice - that shuts off the phone), then take your fingers off the volume up/down. The message starts like this:
Warning!
A custom OS can cause critical problems...
Near the bottom, it will tell you to use volume up to continue, and so forth.
BTW, there is a wonderful post in the development section of the Blaze area that tells you how to root the phone using ODIN. Read it carefully - that's how I rooted mine!
Hope this helps!

TB will attempt to delete in Chuck Norris mode, often unsuccessful. If you are rooted there are multiple ways to delete the ATT bloat including some scripts. Check the developer forum.
