[Q] WiFi-Hotspot Issue? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a Nexus S (I9020A model). I bought it with an AT&T contract. Isn't the portable WiFi Hotspot feature supposed to be free on the Nexus S? I can turn on the hotspot, and I can connect to it with my iPad. However, when I try to browse the internet on the hotspot, it says that there's no internet connection. Help!
My software version is 2.3.6. The build is GRK39F.

Same problem for me, no solution except root/unlock & downgrade

Why downgrade? Have you tried wireless tether in the.market? Have you tried libsec-ril from a previous version?

I was assuming Jacobspoirier was stock/unrooted/locked. In which case he could root and download an app without the hassle of downgrading, you're right

You don't need a new ROM to tether. Just root with superoneclick and install barnacle and/or pdanet.

Native tethering is better than an app. Also, I think the carriers are detecting and cracking down on tethering apps.

I've never had a problem using barnacle or pdanet for the many years I was on T-Mobile. I always used at or just over my allotted 5GB of data, too.
We'll see how that works out with AT&T...

Real USB Tethering for Stock ROM

Hi there,
We've just developed on Motorola Defy an app for real USB Tethering,
Can anyone test it on DroidX?
It can share your Motorola's internet connection to your pc!
It's a real tethering not a simply MODEM Tethering, you should NOT pay extra cost to your Carrier!
The app is TOTALLY FREE, thread on xda:

It says can't find root when I launch it.

What Rom are you running?
On cleanrom4.5 you just need yo flash the att stock 4g and wifi hotspots hack mods in the cleanmods zip from recovery and you're good to go.
Also questions belongs in the q and a section.

Wait so it will not work with the generic icons? That is a shame, because the generic icons allow saving of phone numbers to default to Google not the phone. To me this is more valuable than att hot spot. They make me pay for a 3gb LTE plan without offering LTE in my area, I never exceed 1/2 gb on a given month.

Try the wifi tether app available for download on Google code. Set its setting to generic ICS and it'll still let you tether just not through the wifi hotspot app

Wow I'm so sorry! I re-read your OP and realized you're asking something completely different than what I answered.
Try downloading the my Att app or some other att wifi hotspots app that I can't remember the name of right now. Ill have to get back to you tomorrow about the name exactly.

May get a GS3 cause I'm crazy. Couple questions though

I may get a GS3 but only if I can do a couple things ...maybe one thing. Can we remove the annoying, persistent WiFi notification in a stock ROM that's rooted and clockworked? Thank you!

Yea. I'm running Beans latest ROM n I don't get that notification

There is also a dialer code you can type in that will give you the option to turn it off.
Why would you need to be crazy to get a GS3?
Edit: IIRC it still shows up in the same spot after the code, but it shuts up about saying you should use Wifi and such
(been a while since stock, my bad)

I've read of some XML edits that can remove it but it'd need to be stock. I run stock, rooted so it'd need to be removable from the stock ROM. I wouldn't wanna see it in my notification bar or the pull down. And crazy cause I've had about a dozen phones in a year. I have a problem.

Yes, I'm also stock and rooted and i removed it, as well as that stupid popup about known networks in range.
