I want to take my Captivate back to 100% stock and I am wondering how and what software and flash tools I will need? I flashed the stock rom with Odin but I still don't think I have it back 100%. It tried to do OTA Update and it keeps failing??? I need a little hand holding as far as what order the steps are. Thanks!!!!
Phone info:
Firmware 2.1-update1
Baseband version I897UCJF6
Kernel Version 2.6.29 jetaek.lee sep-11 #2
Build Number ECLAIR
If you used the Odin one click to stock, then that is it. There is no other tool or option.
What you show is stock. Why don't you think so?
When I check for updates it downloads then tries to intall and it always fails. This is an OTA update.
That's the first step. The second is to do a master clear using the same Odin package.
1) Start Odin one click
2) place phone in ADB mode
3) connect phone to computer
4) when odin sees the phone, ie. yellow com box, press master clear
5) let it do it's thing till it reboots
Done!

OTA was known to brick phones, safer to download Mini Kies from Samsung Downloads to get the JH7 update.

Kies mini is the official way - Samsung released it, and if we get Froyo, that is the way we will install it. The OTA update fails for many even with stock.
Go Kies Mini - available at Samsung as a download for our phones
Here is a link that might help people that can't upgrade from 2.3.5 to 2.3.6 or having some problems with the baseband
Copied from motorola's website
"This software is for Motorola ATRIX™ 2 owners who experienced a failure during last upgrade (View Example) and as a result want to upgrade from Blur_Version.55.13.25.MB865.ATT.en.US, BP Patch 27 (View Example) to Blur_Version.55.13.25.MB865.ATT.en.US, BP Patch 36 (View Example). "

It will work but if it's modified in any other ways then the update might fail.
Updating by this method will remove your root but you can easily regain it, just follow the root thread.
can I run this update from 2.3.5 rooted or I should make 2.3.6 OTA first?
Yes. It is just a modified updater, all the changes are same as in OTA.
Having a problem. When I do the OTA update, it downloads it, restarts, starts to install, then I get a !. When it fully reboots it says, failed to install update. When I tried this method, stated above, I press System Update and it still wants to download, it has no copy option.

Hello all. I checked and no one has posted this yet so here it is. I am 100% stock on 2.3.5. I installed it through KIES so I am sure it's full stock. And it's been quite a while and I am not receiving the 2.3.6 update OTA. I don't know why. Do I have to download something? I don't know. Please help me out and thanks very much!
what did you install through kies ? do you mean Odin ? if so what tar file did you use ? did you use sammobile.com tar ? what ROM you were on previously ? did you wipe throughly before flashing stock?
Mine as well. I've received my Skyrocket already in 2.3.5 but somehow, I want to update it to 2.3.6 but whenever I check the Software update, is says that my current software is up to date. Any help please?

What happens is that samsung clntinues to pull the updates. It has beem the third time it happens. When i had my phone 100% stock i updated mine from 2.3.5
to 2.3.6 and I went online to a forum to see what had changed. Many people were complaining about it especially me. Believe me they took away stuff rather then fixing it, for example wallpaper scroll. In conclusion 2 days later people were posting" I can't get the update" "what update" it is mainly because Samsung and att pull them out. Your phones are good don't worry.

If you use the firmware upgrade and initialization option, KIES downloads and flashes stock firmware to your device.

my recommendation is to not revert to froyo 2.2, instead you can revert to stock gingerbread 2.3.X , default flash images for odin are available on the net...and they should flash without any problem, as long as your phone is not hard bricked...

What are downsides if any of reverting to froyo?

There are, and pretty big ones, you will primarily loose the compatibility with a LOT of apps, not to mention that the downgrade of the Android framework would screw up the way you'r phone will behave.
So, basically, the biggest downsides: You will not be able to run MOST apps.
Hell, you wont even be able to run Play Store.
As i remember Play Store is 2.3+
You will still have "Android Market"
To make this shorter, DO NOT DOWNGRADE!

The LATEST official update is Android 4.2.2. Use a custom rom if you want KitKat
BTW whats the point of roting again? It takes not longer than 5 minutes lol
I know that the latest is android 4.2.2 but before I tried checking for update there was a notification saying software update available
So if I wanted to do so software update that was promoted for should I unroot using supersu then rooting phone again the same method I rooted first time or there is another way
Ok I know that but there was a software update notification then I clicked it and it said cant install update device is modified so can I install updates without unrooting and if I have to unroot how can I unroot and then root again
Read this. He have explained how to update without rooting as well as how to unroot.
Kindly press thanks if i helped.
