[Q] Charging problem after XBox use - HTC Sensation

I've got a weird problem that I've never seen before. To start off, I've got a rooted/unlocked Sensation running CM7 alpha6.
I've got 2 USB charge cables that I plug into my PC to charge my phone, one is an old cable from my Nexus One, and the other is the new cable that came with my Sensation. I've never had any problems with charging via PC using the Nexus One cable.
Now a few days ago I plugged my phone into my XBox 360 using one of my USB cables to listen to music. When I plugged my phone in that night to my PC, the next morning it had only gained a couple % after 10 hours or so. So I was like WTF, maybe the cable went bad or got some corrosion on it, so I started using the factory cable that came with the phone.
Fast forward to last night, I plugged my phone into my XBox again, and guess what? I'm having the same no-charge problem with the HTC cable! The only thing I can think of is that the XBox installs some driver that causes the cable to become incompatible. But the weird thing is that both cables can still be used for data transfer, with normal speeds, they just won't charge properly.
Anyone else seen this problem?

Hi, You don't have the box ticked in the battery screen do you ?
the one that says
When device is turned on, do not charge the battery when connected to the PC
this should be unticked.

Hi Dean
Now I dont have it ticked !!
Any other idea's?
The problem could also be your usb line or usb port. try some alternatives first.
Tried everything, different usb leads, different sockets even different laptops !!
Help
Same problem here. But i changed the USB cable and problem solved. Did u tried it, with the official USB cable from HTC? (I guess so, just to check)
Yep I did !!
Will try again when I get home though..
Thats strange... my TP came with UK power adapter, so I couldnt use AC power until I get an adapter (4 days)... in these days I always charged via USB (all night long)
Well I tried the official usb lead and it charged last night, Im now using the official lead again using same laptop and same usb port and guess what !!! It wont charge again

Hi,
this is sounding kinda weird..
What kind of wall charger came with the phone, mine is a wall adapter that i plug the USB lead into to charge the phone
So i know my USB lead works as this charges the phone with both the adapter and via USB on any PC ( i have tried home and work PC's)
Sounds like it could be a handset issue then ???
mine is a Vodafone handset that i bought unlocked and flashed with a different ROM and its working fine..

Laptops can be a bit funny about USB charging, I remember one laptop I had wouldn't charge my phone (SE K800i at the time), unless it was on mains power. The laptop had to be powered up while on the mains, with no USB devices plugged in, then it would supply power to the ports.
My work laptop is also a bit funny about it, I had to disable powering down of the USB ports otherwise it won't power them back up, but since if nothing is connected there's not much of a problem. There is also the possibility it's powering the port, which will charge the phone, but not enough power to actually make it worthwhile, you can check to see how much power is going to the ports by looking under device manager. So you might want to check it's not a problem with your laptop.

This is exactly what mine turned out to be. At work I've got a Dell Optiplex 745 tower and none of the USB ports put out enough power to charge my phone and have the phone on. I've got wifi turned off but the data, EDGE, is always on. If the display is on and I'm in Storage mode there's very little charging going on. It doesn't drain quickly but it definitely isn't going up. If I'm in sync mode it drains pretty quickly and it seems as tho it's not even charging at all.
What I do now is plug it in at work and turn off the display. Kinda sucks but I need my phone fully charged at all times.
I have the same problem....
the usb and the factory usb are different if u have looked carefully
firstable, the shape of the heads are different. secondly, there are 4 pins inside usb and 6 pins inside the factory usb...I guess that's the problem.
Try messing with the USB to PC settings. I know my TP was acting funny and not charging, and after i disabled network functionality, i think it started charging. GL.
Thamks for all the replys, if done everytjhing sometimes it will charge sometimes it wont, I have it connected to my laptop all day for internet sharing, it has charged up very slowly twive, and not at all 8 or 9 times, same usb slot , laptop plugged into mains, official usb lead used ( it never charges from another usb lead )
This is the 3rd htc Ive owned and the first to play up like this over usb !!

Have you tried it plugged into a desktop computer? It would rule out the laptop being the problem if it didn't work. You could also use a mini-usb cable, which could also prove if the official cable is a problem.
Having similar problem...
I'm having a similar problem. My laptop used to charge Touch Pro when i connect it. Now for reason i noticed that it doesn't anymore.
I could be wrong, but I thought I read in the manual that when the phone is synched to a PC, it only charges in trickle mode, so it doesn't recharge the battery efficiently. Is this the problem?
same problem here. Mine was working fine with ANY charger whether it be USB, car charger or wall charger. But now it will only charge with the htc plug but not the HTC wall charger. The plug is the one with the ports for tv-out, headphones.
I'm going to go try and do a hard reset.I dont understand what could cause this.

Stupid thing stopped charging :(

So, I'm traveling (for a long period of time) with my TF. One day, it stopped charging.
I took apart the power brick and put it back together, I even tried to freeze it (on advice from some older "not charging" threads), nothing helps.
When I connect the TF to my laptop via USB - it recognizes the TF. When I connect my iPod to the power brick (with its own cable obviously) - it charges just fine. So what broke?!
I hate this, the local stores here don't sell the power brick separately and I don't even know if that's the source of the problem.
This sucks
Sounds like the power pin in the TF port has bent/broken or just has some detritus/dirt/foreign matter in it and is stopping it from charging properly. Have a look, but you might need to check the port with lots of light and a magnifying glass, so not easy while you're on the move.
If you are in the US Office Depot sells the charger and USB cable for $30.
strange thing is that sometime my transformer doesn't charge.
i have to reboot and it start to charge again.
Same happened here. Asus tech wanted me to wipe the device. After trying other options to get it to charge, I did but it didn't wipe... Go figure... But it booted up normally and now it has been charging.

Apparently charging has some history of issues on the TF101.
I just had mine act up on me, went around the house trying different wall sockets and checked that it worked fine via USB to PC. Ended up taking a can of dust-off to all the pins, then shoving the plug hard into the TF101 socket. Now it works.
Should have mentioned I have a dock as well, which doesn't charge either (so problem is probably with cable/brick)
I'm trying to get new ones (nowhere to be found here, but I'm trying to get one sent to me). I tried looking for dust/dirt and different wall sockets, no luck.
Weird thing - I left it plugged in to the wall overnight and it grew from 5% to 15%, so looks like some electricity is trickling.
I had the same problem with mine after I had it for 5 weeks, I just RMA'd it and everything is fine.
Im having the same exact problem. I left it charging over night by mistake the night before yesterday. I only let it charge 3 hours the most because I know the Transformers have known issues.
I tried to charge it this morning and nothing. I plug it into my PC. The PC recognized the Transformer but no charging. Turned it on and off, nothing.
Just put the power brick in the freezer, waiting to dry up to see if it works .
Although the tf charger and cable has a usb connector it is not usb compliant. the charger brick looks for a gnd signal on pin 7 of the usb connector ( normally a usb 3.0 data line) to determine it should supply 15V to the positive charge pin vs standard 5V. The slow charge you are seeing is from the 5V supply . check to see if pin7 is seeing the gnd signal. Are you using a usb 2.0 extension cable as it doesn't have have pin 7 conductor. be careful connecting your ipod as it could accidentaly see 15V vs the 5V it is designed for.

[Q] Optimus 3D not charging and freezing

Hi to all!
I have this phone about 4 months now, and the phone sometimes wont charge when I plug it in. Also, sometimes when fully charged, it freezes and I need to pull the battery out and restart it. I could not charge it last night and when I turned the phone off and re-inserted the charger plug it charged normally (apart from phone being off).
I have taken it to the dealership service since it could not connect to the wifi and drained battery really fast after that and they changed the usb socket and reinstalled the software. The phone passed all their tests, and it connects to the wifi flawless now, but this charging issue is really bugging me. I almost overslept one day not knowing that the darn thing has frozen.
The phone has all the stock firmware and the OS is 2.3.5.
Any help appreciated..

It's your cable mate i had the same problem the cable LG gave us is cheap you need to buy a good usb cable. I use my Htc desires cable not only does it fit it is stably connected and doesnt move about in the socket i use the lg plug of course but the htc desire cable... Sorted..
Before i used my htc cable my charging always got stuck and i would have to pull the battery now i don't have to do that.. Also the lg cable damages the usb socket on your phone quickly i suggest get a cable if it does that then have it fixed and never use the LG cable again...
Really?!
That is really good news than!
My wife has Galaxy Ace and I did use her charger several times in the past and I had partial success with it, sometimes it would charge, sometimes not, but I never tried it after servicing the phone.
I will try it, thanks for the reply...

[Q] Can't charge off PC USB?

My Photon Q won't charge off a PC USB port, or my laptop. Is this common? Thanks.
Are you using the usb cable that came with the phone? Reason I ask....I've discovered this phone is extremely picky about the cables you use. So far of the ones I have on hand, I can only consistently charge while in the car using my Belkin usb charging adapter with the Motorola cable that came with the phone. That includes a fairly nice ferrite core 6ft usb cable I got from Monoprice...which it works fine at home on AC, but in the car it stutters back and forth between charging and not charging.
Just today I used a cheap USB cable I bought off of ebay to charge my PQ using my laptop.
Its one of the ones sold as "HTC OEM USB Charger + cable" on ebay for like 3 bucks.
I also charge it at home using a green 3m cable from ebay, also bought for like 3 bucks lol.
Does it require that drivers be installed on the PC to get a charge? I've tried a few cables that I have laying around. I'll see if I can find other cables to try. The weird thing is if the phone is off, and plugged in, the LED lights up green, as if it's charging. But using the same cable, if the phone is on, it won't acknowledge that it is plugged in.

No, I wouldn't think so...
I've been able to charge off of many different USB cables on my Q. Not sure... Only thing it's been picky on so far is the wall wart - cable it hasn't seemed too picky about.
If its an old desktop with USB 1.1 it may not charge, and many laptops won't allow charging via USB if the laptop itself is not plugged into AC. Just a thought.

Very good point ^^^. I've heard some laptops, even when plugged in, still don't provide enough juice to charge (some) devices. Perhaps your laptop is one of these low-power USB port devices.
ive noticed that this phone is picky about what charger you use. i have a hard time charging on my pc as well. and certain micro usb's i have dont seem to charge it well either. needs to be the stock plug it came with.
I've basically given up at this point. Blackberry AC chargers work well for me, so I'll try and track down a few more of them. Otherwise, nothing is consistent. The desktop I've used has a plenty big enough power supply, and it charges my Epic with no problem. My personal laptop and work laptop both charged the Epic, but not the Photon Q. I guess I'll just have to carry around a charger instead of a MicroUSB cable when I'm on the road with my laptop.
Thanks, all.

All,
For what little it's worth, I just noticed that the words "Not Charging" come up on the lock screen whenever I connect to the USB port of my laptop or desktop. So the PQ knows it's plugged in; it just refuses to accept the charge.
Also, whenever the battery completely dies, the phone will start to charge. It will charge for a few minutes until it has enough battery to turn itself on. As soon as it turns on, it stops charging, and a minute later, shuts down because of the dead battery. Then it starts charging again. This basically gives me an endless loop of the phone charging, starting, discharging, and shutting back off. I can't even get it to stay off long enough to get a useful charge without turning on automatically.
Yeah, the only issue I've had with this phone at all is the extreme 'quirkiness' it has in regards to charging on anything other than the stock usb cord & power adapter it plugs into. Even using the Moto vehicle dock for the Q, its completely hit/miss on charging. It will *often* go into that 'Not Charging' state where its kind of keeping sort of a baseline/'stalemate' of the current charge level for me, not really going down but not charging back up either. Not really sure what's up with that. With my vehicle dock for the longest I kept thinking maybe my cig lighter port on my car is bad, but I don't have issues with my radar detector at all.
Had the same problem with the not charging a few days back. I was leaving the phone in Mass Storage mode because just getting it into Mass Storage was a headache originally.
Hooked it up to it's original cable and woke up with 65% battery. Switched from mass storage to charge only and it started charging.
Not sure if it was caused by being in Mass Storage and wouldn't charge but now I put in Charge Only before bed.
It always works (in my experience) with the original cable that comes with it regardless, its anything else where its quirky.

Isn't there a setting in ##3282# that enables and disables USB charging? Y'all have probably thought of this already. Anyways just thought if throw that out there. This is my first android that was not a low usage device. I know very little about it. I seriously think xda should make tee shirts that say "everything I have learned in life I learned from xda".
My phone was not charging in debugging mode yesterday.

HTC car kit charging plug damages phone's usb socket

Hi everybody,
I have recently bought the htc CAR D170 car kit (the original of htc, with possibility to charge the device) and I noticed that, after charging it in the car, when I try to charge it with the usual usb AC adapter/cable, it doesn't seem to get the electrical connection as good as it was before.
The usb plug seems to be more "loosely" plugged into the phone's socket, if you move the cable it looses connection, and the bad thing is also that if I plug another usb AC adapter, the usb socket of my phone seems to damage the adapter's plug so that, when used with another phone or micro usb device, the connection gets unstable, too.
It seems to me that the usb plug of the car kit has somehow twisted the device's usb socket...
Did anyone also try this car kit? I don't even know if this is covered by the warranty...
The usb port on the One mini seems to be a little weak. My usb port became very loose after just 2 months, and after another month it stopped working with my usb data cable and OTG cable. Also took twice as long to charge using the mains charger.
My phone is currently with HTC to be repaired ...I hope, as this is the second time i've sent it in. The first time they didn't bother to do anything to it and sent it back to me saying there was nothing wrong work it!.. I'm hoping they don't charge me for this as this is clearly a fault with the phone. The usb port needs to last at least as long as the contract your on.
I had my previous Samsung s1 for over 3 years with heavy use and the port on that is still going strong. I'm using that phone now while I wait for mine to return.
