Turn volume up or down without hardware buttons? - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My focus got wet & now only my volume down button kinda works... I use my headset to turn my volume up & down now... Is it a way to do this through the os without the hardware buttons? If not nodo... Mango?

I also wanted to know this, my buttons work fine but is there no on screen volume? and can you only fast forward and rewind by holding the forward and back arrows in zune?

Doesn't make since how many features that were in a old 2002 pocket pc's aren't in 2011 wp7....

The same exact thing happened to me. Except it was beer, and only the volume down worked.
But couple of weeks ago I started hard pressing the up button and suddenly it started working even though its kinda stiff. This was after being like this for 6 months! It was a miracle.

Hi guys,
there is a propram in the market place called media volume setting will do the job for you

Thanks for the help! But... that app no longer works with nodo or mango... Any other suggestions?

You have unlocked device?

I have a program that will set the volume at 25. I will upload it a bit later. I made it for my girlfriends phone that has a broken volume up button. Only problem is that adjusting volume from the registry requires a reboot to pick up the new setting. I am working on one for in call volume also.

I had a htc hd2 an unlocked it easy but i am having trouble with my focus.... Any easy methods?

I don't know if you still need to know this, since the thread is a couple months old, or if it will be helpful to anyone, but I had this exact same problem (except it was the condensation from a Subway cup), and recently came across an interesting solution.
There is a Trivia game you can download for free from the Marketplace called "Disney_Quiz" (screenshots included so you can make sure its the right one.) that will automatically turn the volume all the way up for you to 30/30.
I didn't do anything remotely special to make the volume turn up auto, I just fiddled a bit with the buttons in the game, clicked this here, clicked that there, tapped the volume down button on the phone a bunch of times, and eventually the volume restores itself to 30/30.
Hope this was of help.
P.S. The game itself sucks, but whenever I accidently turn my phone to silent and the volume drops to 0... it's nice to know I can still turn it back up.

Okay here's the deal I have a Windows phone I change my password but I forgot my password and I I can't hard reset it because my volume up button is broke so I was wondering if there was another way to unlock my Windows phone?

No Sound polaris xda orbit 2

ok..recently aquired this phone...
I've discovered that there is no sound from the speaker at all, no mp3 alarm ringtones .... I've used the slider on the side with no luck, and also tried changing the profile, volume control ect...no luck
Does anybody fancy talking me through any possible fixes for this...
Somebody suggested a hard reset?.... Any suggestions on doing this?...
Is this likely to be a software / registry change to fix this, or is it likely to be a case of sending it back for repair?... I'm sure its under warranty... but if its not, any suggestions on where I could take / send for repair?.... I'm in the Beckenham, bromley, south London region....
I have a basic understanding of pc's, but am not confident of doing registry changes without step - by - step instructions....
Anybody fancy a challenge?.... Thanx in advance...
PS.. just curious...any reason why this forum site is very simular layout to AV Forum site?....
Bump......
Try a Hard Reset first :

To perform a hard reset :
Press and hold the GPS/MESSAGING and INTERNET EXPLORER buttons, and at the same time, use the stylus to press the RESET button at the bottom of your device.
Release the RESET button, but continue pressing the GPS/MESSAGING and INTERNET EXPLORER buttons until you see this message on the screen:
"Release the buttons, and then press SEND on your device to perform the hard reset, or press any other button to cancel the reset."
To see bootloader page :
Hold power button + Camera button and push reset button with stylus wait 3 seconds and then release the reset button but keep pressing the power button + camera button u will be then in bootloader page

...did you go to Start Menu->Settings->Personal Tab->Sounds & Notifications to make sure that you've Enabled Sounds for Programs? a Hard-Reset certainly seems to be the option of choice here if nothing else is working. you can perform the Hard-Reset by selecting Start Menu->Settings->System Tab->Clear Storage and then follow the prompts to complete the process.
Nope...hard reset didnt work...just to say... I can hear through the earpeice when speaking in a phone conversation...just no other sound at all... even tried the option for beeps or clicks when using the keypad and still no sound... Also...that bootloader option...It just takes me to a screen with 4 different coloured stripes and some writing..I'll try it again and post what it says, but basicly it just freezes, then I have to do a soft reset to get the phone back on....

Please remember that the Orbit II does NOT have these buttons!
Update...
I've done another hard reset using this method....
1) Get your stylus and place it in the hole next to the USB port, BUT DONT PUSH! Just get it ready but dont actually push the button inside the hole.
2)Place your fingers on the Windows and OK buttons
3)Press and hold the buttons, dont let go.
4)Stright away push the stylus into the hole and press the button inside. You can let go of the stylus once the button inside has been pushed
5)Keep holding onto the Windows and OK buttons
6)After 5 seconds let go of the Windows and OK buttons
7)If asked to press SEND, just press the green pickup call button.
....
And still no sound!....
Any ideas?
Yes that's the correct procedure, strange about that sound though.
What ROMs it running?
Any clue about what it might be?....
hang on I'll find out........
ROM Version. 1.25.206.3 WWE
Is that the latest Rom..Would it be worth updating if there is a newer version?....
Is that an official ROM or cooked?
I think its official...
you could have a hardware problem...i would have sent it back for a replacement 3-4 days ago!
I cant, bought it second hand. Will take it back for refund if I cant get it fixed...just thought it might be a common problem with a easy fix!...
i believe you've tried most options without any success. the only other options are to open it up and see if maybe the speaker has been dislodged. not sure how easy that would be. good luck!
OK.... thanx anyway!... Damned tiny little screws inside...cant get to the speaker... Ok...off to the shop it goes!
No sound
I had this problem on another HTC device 'the Kaiser' and was informed some specific Roms are not compatible with the radio on the device ( does your device have the original Rom? ) Flashing a new may have caused this problem.

New User Needing Help!

Hi guys,
I just recently got hold of an HTC Touch Cruise but the O2 XDA Orbit 2 rebranded version.
Ive been installing a few useful apps on this but some of the changes i make are lost after the phone has beeen switched off and then on!
Examples of this are the "hide sim" reg edit and the PCM keyboard as the default.
I am assuming that maybe the O2 version of WM6 on this is locked to prevent making these changes.
First, if anyone can confirm this or if not tell how me how ot get round this problem i would be grateful.
If this is the case then i would like to flash the phone with an "editable" version of WM6, are these what the ROMS people mention on here are?
If i am right about the ROMS could anyone recommend a good ROM, if they are specific to anything, one that is more finger firendly rather than stylus would be about the only thing i can think of to specify.
I realise this is a bit cheeky asking for all this but i have had a brief of the forum but would perhaps jus tlike a few pointers if anyone can spare the time.
Many thanks
Hi,
If you are turning your phone off by holding the power button then when you turn it on again it will reboot to the ROM image and you will lose all of your installed programs and edits. Try turning it "off" with a brief press on the button, you shouldn't lose anything then. At least I don't.
AFIK the standard O2 ROM allows registry edits, however you cannot edit the ROM contents. You can install apps and they should be persistent unless you do a full power down.
As for the question about ROMs, yes they are customised versions of WM6.1.
You MUST run USPL before trying to re-flash your ROM I suggest you read the upgrading forum there is a sticky there about USPL and loads of other threads about upgrading.
Personally I like ASergs and Bepes ROMs better than most. They are stable and have most of the apps I require.
Hope this helps, Good luck
Neil
Thanks so much for your reply and especially the promptness!!!
When i turn my phone off i have been holding the button at the top, i if i just press it shortly then all it does is powers the screen off. To be honest now i can get away without ever powering off since i charge every night.
If my phone freezes etc should i be using the reset button with the stylus to reboot - will this cause me to lose my edits?
Also if i used one of the customised ROMS is it still the same if i turn the phone completley off that i lose any settings?
I will give the upgrade thread now to gain better understanding, thanks again.

I'm sorry to inform you that it should not be behaving that way, and if it does, your phone is most probably broken.
If you mean Hard-Resetting, your phone does not hard-reset when pressing and holding the power button. you'll have to do a combination of other buttons and the soft-reset button to accomplish that.
Oops, Sorry about that! I had total brain failure!
Of course turning the device off by holding the power button does not cause a hard reset.
My apologies for any confusion caused.
Cheers
Neil
Ok, on my device (which is actually an O2 Xda orbit 2, if that makes any difference) When i press the powerbutton once shortly it turns off the screen but all things are still running on the phone eg calls will still come in and alarms, sms etc.
If i press and hold the button the phone switches off completley but then when i turn back on after this i find some stuff has not saved how i expect. Installed apps still remain but things like default keyboard and my hide sim reg change revert.
When you hold down the power button at least on the TC, it asks whether you want to power off, presumably yours isn't asking you and just turns off anyway.
When stuff that you expect to be saved but isn't, like the default keyboard. Do you use sip changer or something like that? If I am using PocketCM keyboard for example and reset my device it defaults back to the Cruise/Diamond keyboard and I have to set PocketCM again. If you use something like a SIP Changer it will set it for you.
So that sounds like configuration things and not necessarily strange behavior.

[Q] Power Button Not Working

Hi guys,
I have a little problem where my phone's power button will not function in any way, long presses, short, almost embedding my thumb in it, all to no avail. This is doubly dissapointing as I have just installed the latest dexter plus patch to fix the problem. I still had the problem on the previous version and I thought a clean start may fix it. The only way I can get the screen on is to press the media play button! Which of course isn't doing anything on dexter.
Hunches:
I have been playing with a light sensor program and using a 3 second press to turn the phone off, I am only thinking this is related as when I re-installed then turned off the phone using a battery pull, that now the media gallery button will now not work at all, so that is a change.
Second, the power button is buggered. Seems unlikely as everthing feels normal, no big drops have occurred from heights, and the button is travelling in and out as usual.
I have also noticed that as soon as I re-insert a battery that the phone starts immediately, the M pops up as if it is already posting. So maybe it is stuck down?? Again, I don't think so, as the mechanism is working per usual.
If anyone can help it would be fantastic, you guys haven't let me down yet, and this thing is purring, but unfortunately I cannot use it lol. Just my luck.
Thanks in advance
another thing, still not solved
Another thing is happening, the phone screen turns on "after" pressing the power button, it may be once or a few times, and then pressing the gallery button.?!?!
Also, at random times it plays a podcast on my phone, the exact same podcast, and from the start, though the duration may be a few seconds then repeat, or it may go for ages, its quite a rude podcast too which has caused me to throw my phone under the car seat to shut it up when people have been trying to talk to me, as you can imagine its quite embarassing.
There are no services or apps running that I can find related to music, it may happen after pressing the camera button, or opening a website.
It is still going really fast though. And I have also reinstalled the light sensor program so I can turn it on and off without causing damage to the power button.
Thanks again everyone.

please clarify
sure, so the only way I can get the screen to turn back on, after turning off as per display power saving preferences, is by pressing the power button, maybe a couple of times, then following that up by pressing the gallery button next to the shutter button, pressing the gallery button doesn't seem to be working to turn the screen on now, but this combo is.
I hope that helped.
Cheers.
EDIT:::
The gallery button alone is working again. sorry guys.
You might just want to reflash it to stock to see if this resolves the problem.
Yeah I think I may have to.
Before I do., I was reading a post on a different forum where another person was having a similar issue. They seemed to solve the problem by using rom manager to boot to a manual restore menu where there was a button tester section, after using it the power button worked for them. I tried but after resetting it displayed a triangle graphic then rebooted.
Is there any way to do this with our open recovery program or any other utility to test the functionality or maybe reset the button or apply a patch etc.
Thanks again :-D

Getting Frustrating
Alright so I followed your advice on your videos on how to reflash to stock, so of course my bootloader does not show up the same as yours on the video. I can get to the bootloader fine, using the button combo or by using quick boot > bootloader, both have the exact same result, the boot loader screens as follows:
Bootloader Fastboot mode
80.89
and that is it....
Also, my computer using rsdlite does not acknowledge the phone, not omap drivers loading etc. Followed your instructions exactly.
This is frustrating me to no end lol.
I am guessing that because I can get to the bootloader with combo no problem, that the buttons physical connections are working.. At least thats a positive.
Can I flash to stock with openrecovery? Or maybe to an earlier version of Dexters froyo? Other ideas?
Any help would be much appreciated guys, trying to use this phone at work with light sensors to turn off screen is not as easy as they say. OMG....
Thanks so much

The fastboot bootloader isn't the right one. So... if you hold volume up + camera shutter while powering on you end up in fastboot? That's really weird.
Maybe your keys have been remapped somehow? Does anyone know a chord to boot fastboot? Perhaps check to see if your USB port is clean?
Lmao
Just my luck to have a weird problem. I thought it may have been remapped so I have been trying the program buttonremap. It doesn't seem to let me do anything except stop the buttons I re assign doing anything :'(
Does anyone have a proper key mapping file that I can replace with my faulty one to hopefully fix it?
Or any other ideas?
Cheers everyone

Ok installed anyunlock it allows you to use any physical button to unlock the screen. It doesn't respond when the Power button is pressed, it responded fine to volume rockers, gallery and shutter though.
Anyone know if this would mean for sure its a physical problem before I crack it open and try and fix it.
Thanks guys.

Breakthrough!
I am pretty sure I have fixed the problem, I tapped the phone fairly hard on its sides and back, and lo and behold after a battery pull and replacement it didn't turn itself on, I waited, nothing, so then I held the power button and it started up!!!!
But....I have another problem that happened before that, I am stuck in the boot animation that open recovery uses before going into its program (i.e. where you can load nandroid, wipe dalvik cache etc).
I was about to load a new rom, and was in open recovery, had installed it and about to do the reset and the phone turned itself off, and thats when I got the problem with the sticking boot animation.
So just to be clear, I am stuck in a boot loop, but not with the M logo, the restore logo.
I hope the power button solution can help someone else, as random as it is.
If anyone could help me get out of this boot loop without flashing stock that would be great. ( i can get to the real bootloader now btw)
Thanks again everyone.

Just took the sd card out and rebooted. And the power is getting better after banging it.

So, is your conclusion is that the button was stuck and the banging freed it? It doesn't restick?
The Button is not perfect still. Sometimes over sensitive Occasionally it will not even work but it works most of the time. I am just wondering what cleaning solution I could use to free it some more.
It has certainly been a trying problem. Cheers for the help.
Now I need to figure out why I have this strange ghosting on the top of my screen.....

Samsung Galaxy S2 Power Button Not Working
Hi Guys,
Any solution for the power button problem? Current latest Android 2.3.3 Samsung Galaxy S2 also having the same power button problem. Most of the time I can't use my power button to turn on/off the screen (wake/sleep) and there's no menu for long tap as well. Luckily it does wake when i press the only physical Samsung center button.
What i have already tried: Factory Reset, disable Power Saving Mode, Spare Part+ (apps), Screen Off and Lock (apps), and all won't help.
Is there any current updates or patches to allow the power button to work as usual?
Thank you.

Don't bump your own thread please. Read the rules of XDA as you obviously need to do so.
Have you tried unlocking it through the gmail account?
they did not setup a gmail account on the device they only had it for a few hours at this point and the makers Maylong are providing 0 support
How to factory reset the Maylong m270
1. get firmware here
http://www.maylonggroup.com/Tablets/M270CQ1/M-270CQ_Ver 1.5.6.zip
2. Unzip and copy contents of folder to a clean sdcard
3. insert sdcard into the tablet and power on.
4. Wait until screen says 100% and tells you to remove media.
5. enjoy!!

Strange problem

Hello xda,
I have a really strange problem with my Sensation, it's a new phone that I won in a competition by HTC, I received the phone already S-OFF
The problem is that the Volume up button don't work, the volume down, power button, and capacitive buttons all working ok..
But when I reboot into bootloader, The Power button Don't work, the Volume up button don't work, and when pressing volume down it moves the cursor to the up..
So in bootloader, the volume down button acts like a volume up button and all the other buttons don't work.
The question is this problem a Hardware or software problem? what do you think? should I send it for repair?
Thank you guys,
Cheers
PS: I reinstalled a full RUU 2 times with no luck

Try using the buttons without the back case (They look like black plastic (darker than surrounding plastic). Sometimes the back panel could be faulty (at least from my experience). Since you flashed RUU I can assume that it is not software (as it replaces all software/firmware parts on the device). But did you try using a different RUU? Do SuperCID first. Else you might have to bring it to service, because this sounds like a hardware problem (albeit the bootloader part sounds weird).

Thank you for ur reply
I tried with the case off, and yes I triend using a different ruu, and I also think of a hardware problem, but which is really weird is that the power buttons works when running the phone but doesn't work in bootloader !! that proves there is no hardware problem with the button right?
and the volume down key, when running the phone it acts normally but in bootloader in acts like a volume up !!!
that's why I thought of a software problem

Yes... that is possible. But since you switched HBOOT and firmware, it means that it is (probably) not software, as you tried different versions. The buttons may work, but the problem could also be on the board itself. I don't really know how to explain this, but it seems to be the case.
You can try a ROM that assigns action to each key (or find a mod somewhere... I'm sure there is one), and mod the ROM you run to work with Slide To Wake and virtual volume control. That's how you can live even without buttons (unless a solution is found). Also you can flash a touch enabled recovery via fastboot and operate those things with adb. It's not ideal, but it works, and could replace the physical buttons.

Glad to be of help (Albeit didn't really give a solution). You can also debug this with a button testing app. I never really looked for one, but I'm sure you can find one if you look for it.
