Hi all,
I recently unlocked my VZW Xoom using the OEM unlock instructions found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=967065
I then downloaded the most recent CWM (3.025) and followed the instructions found in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1038870
I was able to write CWM to the recovery partition with no errors showing in either ADB or on the device itself. I verified the checksum of recovery.img.
What happens now is that when I reboot to recovery from ADB, the red Moto logo shows up, and at first everything looks good. At the top it says "Reading ODM fuse 1".
Then, a green Android logo with a yellow exclamation mark on it appears over a black screen. It looks like some sort of error message. I have CWM on my phone so I know this isn't what it's supposed to look like
In any case, has anyone else seen this issue (or better yet, know how to fix it)? I should point out that after a few minutes, the Xoom automatically boots into HC and works just fine.
it kind of sounds like the recovery didn't flash. Have you tried to flash it again?

Hi - thanks for the response.
Yes, I've tried that, rebooted the device, rebooted the PC, tried it again, etc. Still no dice
does it still boot? if so try installing rom manager and using it to flash CWR

Yep, it still boots. I've never used ROM manager, but I did happen to just download it. I'll give that a shot.
Two other things I didn't mention in the OP:
- I do not have an SD Card in the slot.
- I also didn't 'root' the phone yet with the SuperUser APK, only unlocked the bootloader. Would either of those cause the issue?
I believe you have to root to flash recovery. Here is an easy way to do it http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1011196 its the one click method just make sure your not doing anything else while running

Already in the works I'll let you know how it turns out.
Initially, it seems odd that ADB/fastboot wouldn't return an error if root is needed for flashing recovery. Time will tell...

Root was the answer. Duh. I feel dumb now.
Either way, once I get to 10 posts, I can post in the dev forum thread to make it clear that root, not just OEM unlock, is required to flash CWM so that dummies like me can get things working quickly
nice, glad that you got it working.
Be sure to install Tiamat 1.31 so you can use your SD card and get full access to CWM
Rom Manager question
Has anyone found a way to allow Rom Manager to "Manage Backups"? It appears that it isn't pointing to the correct directory/ folder.
Had the same issues after installing CWM from ROM Manager - used the adb method instead and this fixed the issue. (Xoom was already rooted and OEM unlocked)

By no means am I new to Android or Flashing, but I want to do it right the First time and need a little help here.

You dont actually need to do steps 3 and 4. Because when i went through all that, i installed a custom recovery then i flashed a pre-rooted rom and all worked well.

So from what I gather from reading is that you have to unlock Bootloaders & Push Recovery Image thru ADB.
I would have thought by now somone would have done it with terminal, or some other way to Flash the Recovery.

Look at it this way, spend countless hours trying to find an exploit or two seconds unlocking the bootloader and pushing recovery and or insecure boot.img

Yeah... I did it. Unlocked bootloaders & pushed CWM. I was on ICS 4.0.3 & now I get the Green Bot with !... and cant get into CWM. I just rooted with the one click push whatever and now I need to get CWM right. What a ***** this motorola is.
EDIT: I got it finally... with Root I used Root Explorer to get rid of that retarded file and pushed Recovery again and all is well in Xoom Land.
Thanks Everyone!!

Hi,
I had before the OTA for Jelly Bean an ICS unlocked and rooted.
I tried to use ShabbyPenguin to get it rooted again but now I have a broken recovery.
So not sure what do I need to get it rooted again.. Is it possible?
Thanks!
Not positive, but could u flash cwm through adb? Then just flash a rooted ROM, or supuser.zip. Is the bootloader is still unlocked?
Haven't heard good stuff about root toolkits, its actually really easy to do for our phones.
Not sure if it is possible to flash cwm trough adb... However I will try it later today...
And yes, bootloader is still unlocked...

Yeah, I am positive u could use adb fast boot to flash a recovery, cwm or twrp u just need the image.
hhhmmmm... no luck yet...
I tried to flash a recovery and it keeps giving me a message
<waiting for device>
After that it seems like stuck..
I read somewhere else that maybe because of the drivers, but I already tried a couple of versions 1.3.8 and 1.5.6 with the same result...
btw I'm using a Windows 7 64 bit machine...
Not sure if use a Linux machine will have any benefit...

I guess that I will try it with some other windows/linux version later today...
Off but on topic. Describe what you call a broken a recovery please.
When I try to run the recovery it appears a dead android with a red exclamation mark on the screen....
After that it takes some time to reboot again...

That is stock recovery. It is not broken.
Yes I was saying it was broken because before the OTA update I had twrp as recovery, and now I can't flash any recovery

When you flash/install a ota your recovery gets wiped back to stock once it boots up due to the flash recovery script in the stock ROM.
Nothing is wrong with your device. Just follow a real guide on how to unlock and root. Real meaning using the SDK. Or even use one of those stupid one click crap. should not have a issue.
Guides are in the forum stickies.
Hi Guys,
Well not sure what the problem was.... maybe the drivers, maybe Win7 64 bits or I don't what...
I used a WinXP machine with the pdanet installed and it worked like charm...
I succesfully installed the recovery and root again.
Anyway... thanks for your time.
Glad to hear that.
Hey all, sorry if this seems like other questions being posted, but I can not get my phone to work even after attempting the other fixes posted on the forums. I rooted my phone and was running the stock rom that came preloaded with it. I attempted to install CM10 through Rom Manager to no success, so I then tried to manually flash it as well as Gapps. My phone initially got stuck at the CM10 bootloader, but i could still go into CWM Recovery 5.8.3.1. After trying to get the rom to work more, it seems as if all I can access is CWM Recovery and nothing else. My phone wont even boot into the bootloader anymore and all i have access to is CWM Recovery.
I am not the most tech savvy individual when it comes to this since it has been ages since i tinkered with roms, but I would really like to fix this. So heres the facts since my post is so long (sorry!):
-Phone WILL NOT go into bootloader
-Can ONLY ACCESS ClockworkMod Recovery (5.8.3.1)
-SD Card wont mount (I get error "E:Unable to open ums lunfile (No such file or directory)")
I really just want to go back to stock and root again from scratch to reduce any errors like this from occurring in the future and ANY help would be appreciated because I am totally lost and without a phone now. To make things even more difficult, I only have access to a Mac running Lion....although i do have Windows 8 through the use of a bootcamp program, so I CAN run windows programs. Thank you all for any information you may have!

Well since you in bootloader flash TWRP and then boot.img and then reflash the rom just to make sure.
Progress!

Sorry. Best would be the All-In-One Toolkit, TWRP is a recovery to replace CWM because its that what's messing you up and also TWRP is better. Toolkit will also flash the boot.img too.

Okay, will do! Also, where would I find the Boot.img?
And on a side note; my phone says S-ON...I thought when rooted it was supposed to be S-OFF. Could that be causing problems as well?

Boot.img is in the rom zip. S-On is not the reason its CWM thats messing you up with getting into the bootloader but also not flashing boot.img is not helping too.

Np but this time use TWRP as your recovery and once you up and running with CM10 you can use Flash Image GUI to flash the boot.img if you ever update the rom.
This is not mine,I just searched found, and try a LOT of things. But this is the onlything that worked....

run the CMD with admistrator privileges and use the following commands -

adb reboot disemmcwp

install and run KINGO ROOT! (Yes, it's kingO root, not King) on your pc.

Hello everyone! Has anyone found or developing a custom recovery or rom for this poor thing? thanks for the work or find on the root..
There is now TWRP for this. Do a search and it can be rooted without ADB.

Negative. These steps, just like all others found online will NOT root a zte n817. It is actually impossible to root an N817. Tired of the lies!

Using kingoroot? With adb?
Now others are saying TWRP is available.

Yes LeeTree's guide worked for me.

Yes, I followed @leetree2001's post, this worked for me. But then I tried flashing the latest TWRP with TWRP Manager and I broke my phone. After flashing I did factory data reset, and the phone then restarted to go to recovery, and now my recovery is a blank white screen. I can get into QDLoader Mode, FTM Mode, Download Mode, Sahara Download Mode, and EDL Mode, but no recovery. So basically I have a Soft Bricked device now. I have found the stock Firmware file, but it is missing the prog_emmc_firehose_8610.mbn file needed for QPST. If anyone has any help regarding this problem, I would be greatly appreciated. Also to note, I have another one of the same phone, that the ROOT mentioned above worked on, but then I factory reset. Now the phone is in a half rooted state, it had the Kingo SuperUser apk in the system/apps folder. It would stay in my notifications all of the time, and I could not get rid of it. Now the KingoRoot, nor any other rooting app will work, because superuser has taken control. So it is in a half rooted mode, I cannot unroot using KingoRoot either, because no root apps detect it as being rooted.
Removing Files
I have rooted this device and than made sure to see if it was actually rooted by going to another rooting apk to see the status of root.. When I had done that by accident from fast fingers lol I had re rooted the phone when it was already rooted and it un rooted by accidentally re rooting.. Ever since than I have not been able to get it rooted again... I'm not that pro into rooting knowledge so "I have a question to ask"... After that has been done, is there any files/folders that it had left that is preventing me from a successful root? If so what is the files/folders and their destination so I can get rid of them.. I just dont want to delete something that didnt need to be deleted.. Thanks for any help.
