class 4 microsd good enough for sensation? - HTC Sensation

Coming from HD2 with class 10 microsd. I had class 10 because android was installed in the sdcard (before the nand hack).
Now, since the sensation is running from internal, is a class 4 32GB good enough?
Coz I won one for $29 bux free shipping lol...

I think the phone comes with a stock 16gb class 2 card.
Edit. Found a thread that asks that question Lol.... Looks like it comes with a class 2.

Depending on the usage your Class 4 may actually be better than a Class 10. The SD card class speeds were developed with a narrow focus on sequential write speed because that is that cameras/video cameras need in order to write the information to the card as it is being created by the camera. But when used in a phone you don't really use it in sequential read/write it is more often than not used with random read/write, and often lower class cards perform better in these tasks than higher class cards.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1150369

I have a 32gb class 4 card in my phone and its giving me no problems at all.
So in my experience its good to go

As someone who regularly likes to move giant files over, I appreciate the Class 10. If you're just moving music and stuff occasionally...you'll be fine.

Thanks. I was initially looking for a class 10. But since it was a steal at $29 bux with a minute left, I went ahead with the bid. didn't expect to win but I did, so might as well use it with the sensation

Very good programs for testing your memory are:
h2testw_1.4 in order to verify that the XXGB card you bought is actually XXGB
CrystalDiskMark3_0_1b in order to do a benchmark to see what is the real speed of your card. The apps on android are not reliable for these tests.

Once I get the card I'll post my feedback. Coming from a 16GB class10 hopefully I won't notice the difference.

I have a sandisk Micro SD 32Gb class4 for my HTC Sensation. So far so good, I have not found any problem with it . Also I bought it from HTC Showroom in Vietnam with a great deal (about $42 only)

i know that there are different classes of cards: 2, 4, or 6 but what are the main idifferences and will it effect my phone in anyway if i get a 2 compaired to 6?
Heard that Class 4 is the optimum for the Nexus one...anything more than class 4 it wont make a lotta difference.
I can tell you I have an 8g Sandisk Class2 and an 8g Transcend Class6. The Sandisk blew it away in speed comparisons. Not all SDs are equal. I wouldn't have believed it but I tested it myself. Yo have to have root and adb but there is a speedtest on Cyanogen's forums. I tested each 3 times and averaged. The Sandisk was faster by a considerable amount. I also think the Class4 would be optimal and would spend a bit extra on the Sandisk.
I just got a 16gb Patriot Class 2 to replace the 4gb Class 2 stock sd card. My response the first time I opened Gallery "OMFG HOLY CRAP". Instead of the typical 3-5 second load I am at about .5-1 second. Write speed is amazing. This card is just fan-damn-tastic.
I can say I tried a Class 6 16gb off-brand prior to this (my dog ate it) and it had none of the characteristics of this current card.
So for my money, before you consider Class, consider Brand / Quality. The better quality cards will always outperform the lesser cards. If you are worried about the Class (transfer/write speed) then get a good brand and higher class...but for me, the Class 2 Patriot is amazeballs.

hhmm, never heard of Patriot.
I've used SanDisk and Transcend before.
My current one is the stock one that came with the phone.
However, with your "OMFG HOLY CRAP" emotional outburst I'm thinking of researching that brand
I really want a 32 gb microsd card for the n1. Yeah I know its kinda overkill but it would be my card for life really. I just wish there would be a day when I could walk into a best buy and pick one up.

Doesn't wow me in the phone it can find a home in her camera. Somebodies got to take one for the team....

They will come. In fact, a webshop here home has put it up for pre-sale allready and has a unconfirmed arrival date June 1st.
price will be here $180 dollars +/-. But will be way cheaper in the states.

The thing that bothers me about Sandisk (besides the price) is even on their own website they don't list what speed class the cards are. On Amazon I can only find class 2 cards. What's up with that? Maybe class 2 would be enough but I'd be more comfortable with class 4 or 6. Do they even make them in that speed?

I'll probably end up picking up a 16gb one soon since the 32gb ones aren't in any hurry to get cheaper.

On amazons search I typed in 16 GB class 6 micro SD and it pulled some up along with a passel of other sd cards.
The class # classification has merit behind it. But unfortunately cheap manafacturers are abusing the system.
I bought a sandisk 16gb class 2 card not too many weeks after it appeared on the market as the first 16gb card. Never have i wanted for more speed. Songs load up instantly in the music player and the gallery has no lag at all. Don't fall victim to high class # claims. Just go with a manufacturer that you know and trust. For me that's sandisk.
im already sending back my first class 10 card.bought it from newegg but had to get kingston to replace.had problem with corrupt data and making my nexus go loopy.kingston replaced it without any hassles.

hey guys i stay in dubai and i have searched the computer vendors and they only have sandisk class 2 cards and nokia's class 4 cards so if i buy nokia's class 4 mu 44 will it function properly if i want to install app2sd?
Not sure why i cant find it on the bestbuy website but i know its still there at the store bc i seen them there again just a few days ago, i bought mine a few months ago but anyways i found a PNY 4 gig class 6 HC-->high capacity i think, its in the camera section and sells in the black and red pack, not the black and gold one they also have. I bought mine regular price $22.99 which isnt too bad for not buying it on the web. It made my G1 songs and pics load blazing fast and ive since replaced my stock nexus card and have noticed a night and day difference on certain things pertaining to sd. just thought id share what i thought was a good deal. Later, veritas
also wanted to add that ive prolly reformated with parted literally between 100-175 times and really no slower rates on anything and barely a smidge shaved off the top

where to buy 16GB micro sdhc class 6 from?

amazon is too annoying, brings up anything and everything, don't trust ebay

help
NM, found a thread on this forum and got one ordered. yay!

Bought all my SD Cards from these guys http://www.mobymemory.com/micro-SD.asp
this thread isnt in the wrong section at all.............
Can I ask why people care about the class? I've just got a class 2 32gb card from Vodafone for £89. I've not noticed any problems or slowdown taking pictures or playing media...which are the only things my card is used for. Transfers are no slower than any other device I connect via USB.
What's the big fuss?
it's for running apps from in the (hopefully) near future.
class 6 means (i think) a minimum 6Mb/sec transfer rate
oh, got it from memory cow
Yes, but most people have suggested they see no difference when using apps2sd with the "slower" cards. It seems there's a lot of assumptions being made leading to actual sales decisions where it may not be needed.
See this fellow who thought a faster card would solve his issues: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=708859
So where is no differences between class 2 and class 6 ?
Because i have dilemma now, i want to buy some high capacity microSD card, and if i take 32GB it will be class 2, and if i take at same cost 16GB card it will be class 6.
And does any body try to buy 32GB card from Ebay ? ( i am worrying that 32GB is not GB, its Gb, and that means just 4GB )
Thanks for help
i woul;dn't trust the cards off ebay tbh
I went ahead and bought the Transcend 16gb class 6 card through OFFTEK. It arrived with the adaptor, and was very prompt.
http://www.offtek.co.uk/item_detail....at=1&subcat=74
Pretty good price too. I just copied everything to my desktop, swapped cards and copied back.
The new card works great, but i did notice that the full card size is stated as "14.96gb" on the phone, rather than 16.
I also wonder if there is a difrence between a class 2 or class 6 card when playing movies, apps or taking pictures on your SD card.
because that would make the difrence between going for a 32gb or 16gb card.
well, i noticed a difference when copying files. both cards broke 10MB/sec on large files, but the old card dropped damn quick when copying loads of small files - e.g photos.
i'd imagine it would be like this when looking through an album or flicking from one image to the next. it's not about the max speed, but the minimum.

Perfectly normal not to get the quoted capacity, combination of space lost due to formatting and the tendency of hardware producers to size storage media in decimal (ie. 16 000 000 000 bytes) rather than the binary equivalent - which the OS displays (16 x 1024 x 1024 x 1024 bytes).
I've confused myself with that statement - in short the hardware manufaturers use a commonly accepted, flattering but actually incorrect notation to lead you to believe that you are getting more for your money - HTH
Kingston make a 16gb class10, but it's pretty expensive (~100€)

Kingston SD cards

Has anyone here had any experience with kingston sd cards? Just bought a class 4 16g card from newegg for 35 including shipping.. The reviews were pretty good and I know theyre a pretty big company so I think i'll be ok but wanted to see if anyone here could confirm or deny this
*I'm just sayin...
ive got a pny 16 gig, and it works great. i know kingston makes good ram, so id imagine that a kingston sd card would be worth its money, and i cant see a big brand memory product being garbage, especially in 2011. that price is a win no matter what though.
How much was the card? I would love a bigger card. And what did y'all do to transfer memory from one card to the next?

If you have the moola, get this from Newegg, it's Class 10 so faster speed
WINTEC 32GB Micro SDHC FileMate Mobile Professional SDHC Model 3FMUSD32GBC10-R
It's around $82.49 with free shipping.
I've read a few reviews on Wintec cards, and not a lot of them are good. They work fine at first, then start to degrade quickly. To top it off, people say that when they try to get it replaced through Wintec, Wintec claims that its user error or abuse.

I have 16GB for two years already and now i bought 32 gb ... both are working well so far.
16gb are going from $22-$35 shipped right now - class 10 speeds. Pick one up if you are using the stock 8gb. I just ordered one myself.
I've used two different Kingston SD Cards. They worked well for me without any issues. My previous was an 8gb Kingston class 4 and I currently have a Kingston 16gb Class 4 card.
The 8GB is nearly 2 years old and is working just fine. Have used it in multiple cell phones and currently serves as a flash drive for work using an adapter. The 16gb works just as well with some added space.

From my experience I would have to agree on the class. To be honest, I think even a quality class 2 card would do just fine on a mobile device.
The class is an indication of the minimum Write Speed (class 4 = 4mb/s class 6 = 6mb/s, etc) The Read speed is generally much higher than that, so even if you are running applications from the SD card, performance shouldn't be hindered by a lower class card.
The only instance I can think of that performance would be affected is if you record a lot of 720P video with your phone. In that case, a faster write speed *Should* help with stuttering issues.
Now if we were talking about a high end SLR camera, then hell yes, speed makes a huge difference. I run a Kingston Class 6 in my SLR and it handles everything just fine, including HD video.
Just my 2 cents...
Well,
What it really comes down to is how fast the SD card adapter is in our phones, which I haven't figured out yet. If it'll fully utilize a class 10 card in terms of max write speed, then I would totally go for a class 10 card.
Can anyone verify the max speed our phones could support? (No guesses, please)

I like Samsung cards personally. The performance has always been well above it's rated speed, and I've never had one corrupt/fail on me.

Must have been a promotion. My shipping was free. ANd to update everyone else it works like a charm. Dont really notice anything as far as normal phone function because I dont store apps on SD but My Titanium, Nandroid, and Just general SD backups to the PC are noticably faster.
Kingston is dead to me...
So, used to be a big proponent of Kingston, but they've seriously slipped over the last couple years (and not just flash, I've had major problems with their desktop memory, too, but that's a story for another forum). I bought the SDC4/32GB from Newegg. Supposed to be 32GB class 4 card. Wow. First one they sent wrote at 2MBps, read at 3MBps. Sent it in for a replacement, and I got one that wrote at 3MBps and read at 3.5MBps. Tried formatting it with my phone, with the official sdformatter utility, with Windows, with Linux, nothing helped. Third replacement was back down to 2/3MBps. Hardly class 4. And no, it wasn't my device or anything like that. I've got an actual class 4 8GB Sandisk card that came stock with my phone, and it does 5/7MBps on the same devices on which I tested the Kingston. And the Sandisk can record 720p without stuttering. Recordings from the Kingston were like watching a slideshow.
Very much done with that. Sent it back (again), got a refund, and now I've ordered that class 10 Wintec 32GB. Curious to see how it performs, and I'll stress it right away to see how it handles in the long run (do a bunch of writes and reads the first week to make sure it won't crap out right away). I'll report back here with my results, but they can't be worse than the Kingston. And from what I've read, it may be hit or miss, but when I get a hit, it'll be a class 10!

[Q] 32GB Micro SD Cards?

Does anyone use a 32GB micro SD in their device? I'm looking to get a class 10 32GB micro SD but I'm not sure what brand/manufacturer to go with or where I can get the best price. Basically, my main priority is to get a safe, reliable, and fast (class 10 preferably) 32GB micro SD. I've never been too educated in the SD memory market, so I was wondering if anyone could help me out. Thanks in advance!
Sandisk is always a good choice. As for class 10, I'm not sure why you need one that speedy. I have 32GB class 2 card and it is plenty fast enough for my g2x.

Oh really? Well that's good to know. (Like I said I'm not too knowledgeable about SD cards.) I'll look up SanDisk on Amazon, I figured they would be a good source. Thanks!

Thanks a lot! I think I'll go for the wintec class 10 based on your recommendation. That's an interesting observation about Android, but since I'm going to be using the SD card with different devices in the future, I figured I might as well go for the best.
I have a 32gb kingston class 4 and its been running pretty good.
i have two. A class 4 Sandisk and a class 10 Adata. The sandisk seems to work the best. I lost my data on the Adata 3 times and had to return one DOA. While the Adata did have really good speeds it just didnt seem reliable.
Iv never used a 32 but iv had an 8 and a 16 made by A~Data, and have no complaints
dont trust any brands u dont know meng.. there are tonnes of fake cards out there so the best thing to do is to buy from the stores the guys have listed up top.. but if u happen to buy from eBay: here are a list of things to look out for
1) the brand name is Kingston, Sandisk, AData or Lexar - those are known and trusted brands to work with.
2) the class of the disk is displayed on the microSD Card and the class relates to a price - if its a class 10 and its cheap - beware.. safest bet is to go with either a class 4 or a class 6
3) Insure that the Serial number is displayed on the microSD Card.. if you dont see a serial number then ask for one and check via google to insure that it is legit
that is how i got this wicked awesome 32GB Kingston card from eBay for 20 bucks.. i had a 32GB class 10 card from memorex but couldnt make a ext partition with it and thats how i discovered that it was fake
Dane-Elec and Transcend are fine and I am using them in GTab and X10.
I also have Sandisk and using it in G2x.
I have a 32g class 10 from Kingston. It works flawlessly, and you can see the speed improvement. Pick one up here.
Just picked up a ADATA 32gb fron newegg on sale for 49$ + free shipping (Class 4).

32GB SD cards

Anyone using a 32GB SDHC card in their Fascinate? Just asking because there's one on sale on the Newegg Shell Shocker later today (check at 10AM pacific time). Wondering about speeds and such, and whether Class 10 is worth it (seems like if you want to fill such a big card, it'd be nice to have the faster write speeds of Class 10 but I've seen some reports of incompatibilities/problems with C10 devices).
I was just benchmarking the card that came in my Fascinate (which is supposedly Class 2) with SD Tools and I get 5-8MB/s writes and 16-18MB/s reads which is way better than the Class 2 minimums. The one on the shell shocker is a Class 4 so I'm just wondering whether it'll be a downgrade in terms of speed (just because it's rated for significantly lower speeds than what I'm getting with the internal one). I'll probably end up getting it anyway because I've got ~1GB free on my current one and I want to play with an Ubuntu chroot install.
i got the sandisk 32g class 10 it was worth it. Seems to R/W faster but that maybe due to the SD card boost read ahead cache hack. I think mine is set to 512K. Whether its faster or not the extra space is always a plus
Guess ill find out the hard way with ya, bought one as well. Was also wandering about the speed difference. Noticed the one that came with was class 2 and the 32 was class 4, hoped it at least wouldn't be any worse as i am content with the speed of the included sd. Was really surprised to see that it was a class 2.
Oh well just have to wait until it gets here and see.
DO NOT BUY THE Patriot LX Class 10 32GB CARD!!!
After a few months of light usage (i hardly ever connected it to transfer anything, just had HD seasons of breaking bad, chuck, human target and sparta that I never had time to finish watching) I finally hooked it up for maybe the 6th time since i purchased it, and after transferring some music and more shows, i got a "Damaged SD Card" error. For the last month since that occurrence, I have had to reformat the card at least once a week, and set up my music and just a few episodes at a time (because whats the point of putting seasons on if i'll just have to transfer them over again in a few days) consistently. Sure, it moves along at 12MB/s, but certainly not worth the hassle.
This is not an issue that I have heard of with Class 2 or Class 4 32GB micro SDHC cards, and Patriot says they are working with Microsoft and Google to determine the cause of the issue, but Newegg reviews indicate that this is not an isolated incident.
Good luck with the SanDisk card!!!
Mhm, I got the A-Data 32GB class 4 from Newegg. I benchmarked it and it's not as amazing as the built in card (around 5-6MB/s write and 12MB/s read) but it's not super slow. Yeah, I ended up avoiding the Class 10 cards for that reason actually. It's nice to have so much free space now; I think I'm going to try installing Ubuntu in a chroot jail again.
The new PNY class 10 for tablets is now in stock at Newegg, just ordered one with free shipping.

I got this exact card -- Just arrived yesterday.. I am getting AWFUL performance from it. I mean it performed like 3MB/s write and 8MB/s read.. It only fluxuated by about +-1MB with various SD read_ahead changes.. So disappointed. The worst thing is my phone is NOTICEABLY worse-off with the card in (weird stutters, etc).
Which leads me to something else altogether -- Has anyone noticed that with no SD card in the phone it just flies? I mean even the old SD card which didn't SEEM to give me any stutters was a matter of night and day with it in our out.
jt's CM7 Test Build 10 / EC09 radio / OBT .13 kernel @1400mhz
Old radio was EB01.
_______Update________
So I hadn't tried the card today with the EC09 radio (why should it make any difference?). It seems to have made a difference. Below are my results (with SD Booster app to change Read Ahead value, and AnTuTu benchmark just doing SD Card IO).
PNY 16GB MicroSDHC P-SDU16G10TEFS2
Read Ahead, AVG Write, AVG Read
4096, 6.4MB/s, 15.4MB/s
2048, 6.5MB/s, 15.4MB/s
1024, 6.5MB/s, 15.5MB/s
512, 6.0MB/s, 16.1MB/s
256, 7.4MB/s, 16.3MB/s
256 (2nd pass to verify), 7.4MB/s, 15.9MB/s
128, 6.9MB/s, 14.8MB/s
FAT32 / 16GB Partition
I hope this helps someone. Still not sure why my write speeds are so slow on Android when I've seen them hanging around 12MB/s in Windows (When using FAT32).
Patriot has a lifetime manufacturer warranty on most of their memory. You should contact them about getting a replacement. I run their RAM on my custom built personal pc. It is super stable. Just hoping to help.

I've used both the Patriot class 10 32gb card and the wintec 32gb class 10 card. Both have corrupted my data after a few days. Heard the sandisk and the lexar cards are good, so you may want to give them a shot.
Got the scandisk class 4 32gb and it's satisfactory
i was just about to buy a larger card when stumbling onto this post.
Does the read/write speed slow down as the card gets bigger in size?

No, but I have found that cheaper/nonbranded cards tend to be slower. Read reviews before buying.
I've got a lexar 32gb class 10. It's absolutely terrible. It takes so long for pictures from the gallery to load after you take a picture for example. Anything using hte SD card is slow as molasses. Oddly every benchmark I throw at it shows high speeds, so I have no idea what is going on with it.
may be could try this (get rid the lba) could help the perfomance and compatibility ?
try read this thread (hope help), I'm not try it my self on my fasci, since my class 10 msd still on it's way send to me.
