Kingston SD cards

Has anyone here had any experience with kingston sd cards? Just bought a class 4 16g card from newegg for 35 including shipping.. The reviews were pretty good and I know theyre a pretty big company so I think i'll be ok but wanted to see if anyone here could confirm or deny this

ive got a pny 16 gig, and it works great. i know kingston makes good ram, so id imagine that a kingston sd card would be worth its money, and i cant see a big brand memory product being garbage, especially in 2011. that price is a win no matter what though.

How much was the card? I would love a bigger card. And what did y'all do to transfer memory from one card to the next?

I've read a few reviews on Wintec cards, and not a lot of them are good. They work fine at first, then start to degrade quickly. To top it off, people say that when they try to get it replaced through Wintec, Wintec claims that its user error or abuse.

I have 16GB for two years already and now i bought 32 gb ... both are working well so far.

16gb are going from $22-$35 shipped right now - class 10 speeds. Pick one up if you are using the stock 8gb. I just ordered one myself.

I've used two different Kingston SD Cards. They worked well for me without any issues. My previous was an 8gb Kingston class 4 and I currently have a Kingston 16gb Class 4 card.
The 8GB is nearly 2 years old and is working just fine. Have used it in multiple cell phones and currently serves as a flash drive for work using an adapter. The 16gb works just as well with some added space.

Yea I went with the class 4 as from whhat I've heard anything higher doesn't yield much results (at least in a cell phone) but its working nice so far
*I'm just sayin...

I've also heard bad reviews about the wintec cards too. Let us know what you think about the Kingston.

I bought a Kingston 8GB Class 4 MicroSDHC for my previous phone, the Nexus One, a year ago and I was very satisfied with it. It's way cheaper than the Sandisks and it works great so yeah, highly recommended!

From my experience I would have to agree on the class. To be honest, I think even a quality class 2 card would do just fine on a mobile device.
The class is an indication of the minimum Write Speed (class 4 = 4mb/s class 6 = 6mb/s, etc) The Read speed is generally much higher than that, so even if you are running applications from the SD card, performance shouldn't be hindered by a lower class card.
The only instance I can think of that performance would be affected is if you record a lot of 720P video with your phone. In that case, a faster write speed *Should* help with stuttering issues.
Now if we were talking about a high end SLR camera, then hell yes, speed makes a huge difference. I run a Kingston Class 6 in my SLR and it handles everything just fine, including HD video.
Just my 2 cents...

What it really comes down to is how fast the SD card adapter is in our phones, which I haven't figured out yet. If it'll fully utilize a class 10 card in terms of max write speed, then I would totally go for a class 10 card.
Can anyone verify the max speed our phones could support? (No guesses, please)

I like Samsung cards personally. The performance has always been well above it's rated speed, and I've never had one corrupt/fail on me.

Must have been a promotion. My shipping was free. ANd to update everyone else it works like a charm. Dont really notice anything as far as normal phone function because I dont store apps on SD but My Titanium, Nandroid, and Just general SD backups to the PC are noticably faster.

Kingston is dead to me...
So, used to be a big proponent of Kingston, but they've seriously slipped over the last couple years (and not just flash, I've had major problems with their desktop memory, too, but that's a story for another forum). I bought the SDC4/32GB from Newegg. Supposed to be 32GB class 4 card. Wow. First one they sent wrote at 2MBps, read at 3MBps. Sent it in for a replacement, and I got one that wrote at 3MBps and read at 3.5MBps. Tried formatting it with my phone, with the official sdformatter utility, with Windows, with Linux, nothing helped. Third replacement was back down to 2/3MBps. Hardly class 4. And no, it wasn't my device or anything like that. I've got an actual class 4 8GB Sandisk card that came stock with my phone, and it does 5/7MBps on the same devices on which I tested the Kingston. And the Sandisk can record 720p without stuttering. Recordings from the Kingston were like watching a slideshow.
Very much done with that. Sent it back (again), got a refund, and now I've ordered that class 10 Wintec 32GB. Curious to see how it performs, and I'll stress it right away to see how it handles in the long run (do a bunch of writes and reads the first week to make sure it won't crap out right away). I'll report back here with my results, but they can't be worse than the Kingston. And from what I've read, it may be hit or miss, but when I get a hit, it'll be a class 10!

As per thread subject, does it have to be class 6? Or class 4 is enough without degrading its performance?
Will class 10 be even better (I'm not sure if the bottleneck in its architecture will waste the memory card data transfer capacity)?

Remember that class numbers are the minimum "writing" speed, so for reads (viewing contents) on a good Class 2 should be good, even for HD videos, however, copying files on it can be slow.
I has a SandDisk 16GB class 2 on the EVO and writing speeds are more like class 4, also a temporary SanDisk 8GB class 2 on the TF with good speeds.
I ordered a SanDisk 32GB class 4 for the TF. If I am correct, there is still no official information if the TF can enjoy class 10 speeds, but it should be.

I bought a 16gb class 10 from Fry's for $33.
I'm getting fantastic speeds from it.

The highest class in the size you want that you can afford.
That's my recommendation.

It really depends on how much space you would like to have in your device.
As far as speed is concerned, the results vary but more often than not, each class is going to be faster than its lower counterpart. If you don't want to spend too much on 32GB class 10 card then class 6 16GB is another balanced option!
On the other hand, this card was $108 just last week, but now its $94 bucks and with excellent reviews:

Fragmentation and Speed
The memory of a card is divided into minimum memory units. The host writes data onto memory units where no data is already stored. As available memory becomes divided into smaller units through normal use, this leads to an increase in non-linear, or fragmented storage. The amount of fragmentation can reduce write speeds, so higher SD card speeds help compensate for fragmentation.
The SD Association has specified operating conditions for SDHC, SDXC, SDHC UHS and SDXC UHS memory cards to guarantee the minimum speed according to the card's speed class. Speed logos are provided to help identify cards that comply with these specifications.

No, I don't think memory capacity has anything to do with speed. What I mean is that class 6 would be faster than class 2 or 4, obviously but it varies from device to device. For example, stock microsd card in my HTC evo was a class-2 which I replaced with one of the cards I linked above and speed of saving pictures and videos improved drastically.
Same card in the transformer was showing speeds that of a class 6 or 10! Having said that, there is no way to save videos and pictures on microsd (external) storage on transformer (at least I don't know and even though it can show galleries found on the external card) so you may not experience that slowness issue.
So for me, the sweet spot is class-6 if you cannot afford class 10 card and even those are now coming down in prices.

Exactly, it depends on the read/write of the device. That's actually my question.
I tried to ask ASUS customer service, but seems she doesn't know the answer. Instead she advised me to carry the tablet & test it when I am buying the card!
The problem is:
1. My Transformer is still on pre-order.
2. I don't think the seller will allow me to open the seal to test the memory card before I commit to purchase it.
Basically I need the memory to watch HD movies while travelling. I agree with dark_aura: the class only tells the 'minimum writing speed'. It should be good enough to watch HD movie even with class 2. But with HD movie in average about 4-5 GB each, it will take more than half an hour just to copy a single movie into the card. >> Currently there are 50 over movies in my disk library line up in the queue. I simply have no time to watch them at home.
Perhaps my question should be:
Can anyone who has class 10 memory confirm if Transformer can write at the speed of 10 MB/s into it?

I did some of the research and finally decided on a SanDisk 32gb card. Really didn't want to spend 100 bucks if I could help it. It costs like 85 from Amazon but I ended up getting this bundle from Digital Media Source - fulfilled from Amazon though for about $66 including an SD card adapter and a card reader.
It said that it would come in a retail package - it didn't - just a small envelope with the card and card reader. I did get a class 4 card in my particular shipment though. I was scared it might be counterfeit... apparently a lot of eBay and third party sellers have that issue. They will modify a 2gb or 4gb card to make it report as a 32gb but when you write more than 32gb it will fail.
I ran some tests on my computer (my Transformer is out for repair) - I am getting 5mb a second write and about 12mb a second reads - tested the entire 32gb twice and it seems to work well.
One thing I keep reading about is some of the cards with very fast write speeds (good for taking photos for example) might not have good random access speeds. Not sure if anyone else can comment on that. I decided to go with the SanDisk since they seem to get solid reviews and it was a pretty good value.

I just got my transformer and im looking for a good one without going over 100$. I can get some pretty good deals on some 16gb ones but i don't know what class they are what would you recommend as the lowest you can go

I really doubt it will work...
SDXC devices are backwards compatible, so they accept SD and SDHC memory cards. SDXC memory cards must only be used with SDXC devices and should never be used in non-compatible devices.

Okay I was asking because I knew there was some confusion in which people thought the tf was sdxc compatible, so I thought I would ask someone with a tf. My thought was that the tf was only sdhc compatible because that is what it said in the Asus website.
It would've been nice to have a sdxc compatible device though, the storage capabilities are massive.

Issue with MicroSDHC
Hey just received my Transcend 16GB microSDHC class 6 card. I ripped a dvd with Handbrake and I noticed that theres lag and stuttering during playback with Mobo player. The video and audio are out of sync. At first I thought maybe it was the rip itself. I then move the 600MB MP4 file over to the internal drive of the TF. Played the file and its fine, no issues at all. I thought a class 6 card was good enough to play back a 600MB file?? Could it be the card itself?

Not sure if this is the right forum, but looked like accessories was the best bet.
Im looking at 32G cards, but open to 16 as well. Just switched to Android, so would be good to know others experiences, and whether there is something I cannot do with a Class 4, for example or whether you see any lags with other cards you have used etc, or if a specific class is needed for using some specific feature?. I did do a search, and didnt find anything, maybe I missed it. Might be useful to have a thread regarding people's experiences..
Any suggestions/recommendations for what I should be looking at?
I have read that the Partiot/Adata/Wintec cards are not too reliable, though their prices for a class 10 are much lower..But I dont want to go through the hassle of returning/copying data, so I am thinking Class 4 is enough.
Here is one option, Sandisk 32g, doesnt say class 4, but some reviewers mention it is actually class 4. At the same time, some mention they got Class 2. Cannot post a link since I don't have 8 posts yet

I'm rocking the Patriot LX series 16gb as well. Class 10 and with transfers(usually 3-5 gigs) I'm hovering around 8-9mb/s.
EDIT: If you live by a Frys Electronics, I picked mine up there for $32.

I have the Patriot 8 GB Class 10 from FRYS. I'm getting speeds of ~11 Mbps.
I think it would be better to go with a 16 GB class 10 (~30 for Patriot class 10), than a 32 GB that's close to three times the cost of a 16 GB.

I just got this one, so far it seems to perform well enough. It's only a class 6 and it was writing at about 8-9 megs. Not too bad IMO.

Many of my buddies have had 32GB MicroSD cards and a lot have malfunctioned. Never really had issues with 2-16GB MicroSD

Dont get HP brand, I had a hell of a time making a gold card because it kept getting corrupted. Format took forever to do as well.

I took the 16g card out of my Epic and it works great its a class 2 I formatted it 1st and no problems. So it seems Samsung cards are good.

i bought a Wintech 16GB class 10 off newegg for $28. Out of curiosity, will the format SD card function in clockwork recovery work to just format it so I can use it? Or should I do a full format on a pc, why do you need to format before use? Why cant you just pop it in and go? Does HTC format the sd card before they ship all these phones to the carriers/customers? Just curious, thanks for input.

I've recently been having a great experience using Kingston 8 gig class 4 cards to record hd video.
To check the card speeds on pc I use CrystalDiskMark 3.
There is also an android app called SDTools that will show card information.
I also use SD Formatter 3 from sdcard.org to format my cards.

Another tool to find out if your cards are what they claim to be is H2testw. It checks capacities, corruption and read/write speeds.

Just an update, got the card in the mail, so far so good, dont know any way to test the speeds but i tryed two apps, one said it maxed out at 20mbs and the other 14mbs, so i dunno how acurate thise numbers are but all seems well!

Just pop it into computer, and format it as FAT 32, and use it. Generally all cards are pre-formatted when manufacturer sends u out. But I reformat it before first use to make sure its in the FS as per my preferences .

I bought a cheap 16gb card on ebay
I'm sure it's a counterfeit Sandisk. I've had it at least a year. I only paid twenty bucks for it back when 16gb cards were 50 bucks. It's only class 2. I used it for a long time with my Tilt 2 without any problems, even though I store 10gb of music on it. Now I'm using it in my Inspire. I tested it using the SD tools app. The write speed is 11.6 and the read speed is 20.4. Sometimes those numbers fluctuate slightly, but that's what it tested just now. It does fine with HD video. About once a week I was getting a disk error on my phone in which the card was becoming unmounted, particularly when I would use google navigation. I used SDFormatter 3, the one mentioned in the post above, and I turned on "format size adjustment", and the error hasn't happened in a while. I appeciate the poster who mentioned the software. It seems to work better than the native Windows 7 formatter on my pc.

Cards with the exact same generic blue and white packaging are abundant on ebay today from 17 to 30 bucks. Most are receiving good reviews. I may take a gamble. You never know.
Update: Ha ha. I asked the above seller if the card had been tested for capacity and speed. The reply was "Card no is fake. It real." lol

I'm using an adata 32gb class 10 card and it flies. Check on newegg for cards if you haven't already. The price seems to be dropping on these cards recently. What was once 120 dollars is down below the 100 mark or less!

I am running a 16 gig class 4 Sandisk card, and it runs well.
Played with the camera some, and recorded some video to test it out. Haven't had any problems there.
Also loaded some movies to the sdcard, and played them both on the device and through a video cable to a t.v., didn't see any issues so far - but I haven't had a lot of time to dig into it. Currently only tested .avi video using mobo player.
No problems transferring data back and forth through the device to the sdcard when plugging into the computer. Loads up right away as an external drive (windows machine), drag and drop, edit files on the device, etc... no problems.
I have a pny class 10 (8 gig) I could compare it to if you're interested, otherwise i'll get around to that eventually anyway.
Is there a god benchmark app to use on the device itself to compare memory cards?
(I know these card capacities are way below what you're asking, but I don't have any 32 gig cards to throw at the question yet - may be a while before I get any)

I always trust Newegg with my SD cards. They have a good selection at good to very good prices and their customer service is Eggcellent! (sorry, I couldn't resist )
Everytime I've had an issue with any of their cards (only 2 times now), they promptly remedied the situation to my satisfaction.

I can most definitely say that the class 10 shows a significant speed difference on the phone then the class 2 and 4 cards i've been swapping in and out.
I'll be picking up some more class 10 cards from different manufacturers to do a speed comparison like I did with the Nook Color, but for the moment I feel completely safe in recommending a class 10 card over a lesser class.
On the Nook Color, we were running CM7 from the MicroSD card itself, and learned that the operating system depends on small-block read/write moreso then large-block read/write in order to run well.
It was hard, at first, to figure out what was making a difference, but after tons of people posted up test results using a specific benchmark software we narrowed it down to SanDisk brand cards, specifically the class 2/4 cards in the largest capacity you could find as the winners of quality.
All other manufacturers were focusing on large-block read/write speeds to use as their metric for quality, while SanDisk paid extra attention to small-block read/write to give a balanced card.
This made a lot of sense from a general manufacturing standpoint for the majority of businesses out there. Digital cameras/camcorders and file storage were the main usage of flash memory cards - and that kind of stuff is all large chunks of data. Streaming video, transferring large files or groups of pictures has little to nothing to do with small-block read/write.
When it became evident that SanDisk was the only manufacturer focusing on the actual specifications we needed to rely on to run an operating system from the flash memory card, the general recommendation became to say get a SanDisk over in the Nook Color forums here at XDA.
From the research i've done in that direction, carrying it forward here, i'm finding that small-block read/write has little impact on the proper running of this phone. We aren't running the operating system from the memory card, like we were there, and the information transferred back and forth is in greater chunks.
Generally speaking, and before I can conclusively state anything, PNY looks like they are going to be our recommendation here for this phone. I say this not to make that recommendation now, but to challenge people to prove that wrong.
PNY has built their business around speed based on large-block read/write capability for their flash memory. They were my general recommendation before my Nook Color experiences for that reason.
My class 10 PNY card (8 Gig) blows away everything else i've got in this phone so far. I've run a couple class 4 SanDisk (16 Gig) a class 2 SanDisk (16 Gig) and 5 different class 4 SanDisk (8 Gig) cards in this phone so far.
I don't have conclusive speed test data correlated from the phone yet, but it's coming. (There's a ton of stuff i'm testing all at once on this phone, I simply don't have time for it all even with the long days i'm putting into it)
Right now the new ROMS starting to filter out are getting put on my testing schedule, as well as constant video testing with as many televisions as I can come into contact with using several different cables. The GPS / A-GPS issue is my biggest front-and-center concern at the moment, and until that's hammered out to my satisfaction I won't be able to sit down and speed test the memory cards in the phone within a variable-controlled testing environment.
Give me a few weeks to get the rest of it worked out and i'll be able to sit down and make side-by-side speed test comparisons of all the cards I have, and that'll give me some time to get more cash together to get some decent class 10 cards to use in the testing.
Right now, my class 10 card seems to perform the best. Can anyone refute this, or substantiate it with their own results?

The card is solid and has impressive read/write speeds that can't be touched to date. If you google it, you should be able to find some comparisons as I did. (Note: It may not show up on the first page of results...I remember going through a lot and typing different words when researching...)

don't get a 32g class 10 patriot card unless they fixed them
the one i got in january keeps corrupting data on my phones but no other devices.

Anywayz, I know that the Class 10 cards actually do give better speeds. My question is does it matter for our phones? Is the SD card a bottleneck for the Doubleshot?

Yep, positively.
I had a PNY class 10 8-gig card, specifically advertised as "high speed data transfer" and it was.
I had a bunch of SanDisk class 4 - 8 gig cards, and some SanDisk class 4/2 - 16-gig cards laying around from the memory speed tests I did on the Nook Color.
Whereas the Nook Color requires manufacturing attention to small block read/write data paths, the MT4GS requires large block read/write data paths to be more robust on the physical circuitry of the card.
I restore half a dozen to a dozen CWM backups on my phone a day. There was a noticeable shortness in the time spent restoring a full backup from the class 10 PNY card.
What we learned last time, and the links are in the bottom line of my signature, is that SanDisk cards are ideal for the Nook Color, because that particular manufacturer makes a more balanced card. For the ( for now ) niche market of running an android installation from a MicroSD card, either you get a SanDisk card or you go home crying.
This phone, or any phone, is just the kind of device that the class 10 MicroSD cards are targeted at and made for. Large block read/write transfer applies to things like:
-Streaming media (movies, music)
-Playing media from the MicroSD card
-Playing most games, at least the higher-end graphics-wise ones.
-Transferring large chunks of data...like recovery images, folders of pictures, movies, etcetera and so on...
When the phone tries to grab stuff from the MicroSD card, it usually does so in large enough grabs where it falls into the category of large block file transfer.
I was trying to do memory tests on this phone with benchmarks that can be compared like the threads in my sig, but for the moment i'm too wrapped up in other stuff for this phone.
Until I can throw blocks of time at testing, and only testing in one sitting I can't control the variables I can influence enough to validate my results to myself, let alone to share here. Meanwhile, i'm keeping an eye on this thread, so keep asking questions and experimenting!

Nice, Blue! I'm going to pick up a class 10. I am specifically wondering about gallery rendering. I use my MT4GS for looooooooots of photos and videos. I open the gallery constantly and it takes a while to pull all of the content. I currently have a 32gb class 4. I'll report back my findings.

Yep, you'll notice a sizeable difference going from a class 4 to 10, even though you didn't mention the manufacturer.
I really, really wanted to use the stock gingerbread gallery from Google, but it's just not as good with loading pictures as the stock HTC gallery is.
I've compared them both using the same memory cards, and while the Google gallery is good using a class 10 card (PNY in my case, 8 gig) anything less and it won't load all the pictures the first, second, or even third time you kick it up.
I like the Google gallery better, because it means I can eliminate the sense frameworks altogether on the MT4GS, but it just can't compare to how well and correctly the sense gallery works.
Shame, looks like i'm stuck with sense, but i've not been loading anywhere near the number of pictures you are talking about.
I am eagerly awaiting whatever results you care to share moving up to a 32G class 10 card - let me know what manufacturer you end up going with.
I want one, but it's just so hard for me to justify the cost of it against other things I have to spend my money on, since I have about a dozen MicroSD cards here sitting in front of me.
I just broke my class 10 PNY card yesterday - pulled the cord from the pc before it said ready to eject, while it was trying to make it ready to eject. Now the card won't format in any device or compter I put it in - dammit.
Maybe I can convince myself to buy one if it seems like it made a drastic difference to you, since I don't have any class 10 cards left now.

It all depends on what card you get. I recommend both 32GB cards in my signature.

I have a pny 32gb class 10. $50 at bestbuy few weeks ago. So fare i have no lag or issue.

LEXAR 32GB class 10. My QuickPic gallery opens up instantly. Load times are negligible. The photos are just there! I moved up from a SanDisk 32gb class 4.
SD Tools measures it as writing at 10MB/sec.

I wanted a balanced card for everyday moderate use. Based on Blue6IX's comment in post # 14, I decided to go for SanDisk. Observing that the MT4GS came with a SanDisk Class 4 card and the speed was sufficient for my moderate use, I just upgraded the size with a 32GB SanDisk Class 4 card.

Since I changed my signature, I'm running a Wintec 32GB class 10 card in my Doubleshot and an ADATA 32GB class 4 card in my Vision. Both cards run pretty well, especially since I have the real A2SD running in the Vision.
I also recommend PNY's cards. Best Buy has those on the shelves if you don't want to wait for UPS to deliver it.

I just ordered a 64GB card from Sandisk. It's supposed to come in Tuesday. If it works I'll post back here.

Coming from HD2 with class 10 microsd. I had class 10 because android was installed in the sdcard (before the nand hack).
Now, since the sensation is running from internal, is a class 4 32GB good enough?

I think the phone comes with a stock 16gb class 2 card.

Depending on the usage your Class 4 may actually be better than a Class 10. The SD card class speeds were developed with a narrow focus on sequential write speed because that is that cameras/video cameras need in order to write the information to the card as it is being created by the camera. But when used in a phone you don't really use it in sequential read/write it is more often than not used with random read/write, and often lower class cards perform better in these tasks than higher class cards.

Very good programs for testing your memory are:
h2testw_1.4 in order to verify that the XXGB card you bought is actually XXGB
CrystalDiskMark3_0_1b in order to do a benchmark to see what is the real speed of your card. The apps on android are not reliable for these tests.

Once I get the card I'll post my feedback. Coming from a 16GB class10 hopefully I won't notice the difference.

I have a sandisk Micro SD 32Gb class4 for my HTC Sensation. So far so good, I have not found any problem with it . Also I bought it from HTC Showroom in Vietnam with a great deal (about $42 only)
