Hi i recently got a samsung nexus S, and i have not did any modifications to it like flashing custom roms on it or anything. So its straight up as original as it is.
But i seem to be having a problem with it now as it does not do a clean data wipe even if i do it with a hard reset? The one where u press and hold the power button and volume up. After that i tried doing a reset from the Settings section, it rebooted and came back on with everything still on my phone ! Nothing was deleted at all!
Anyone has any solutions to this?

Just go to settings -> privacy settings -> factory data reset.
yeah i did that, and it rebooted up, and everything was still there lol
Apps, contacts, and some settings like wifi info will automatically come back when u log into your Google account.

I've NEVER seen that happen before, I honestly think you're somehow doing it wrong.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App
ok first a factory reset thru the settings option.
i went to settings > Privacy > factory data reset i dun think i can get that wrong.
when i do that it shuts off my phone. Reboots up, and i was expecting a clean phone. But everything is still there...
Nxt is hard reset, i shut off my phone, i press and hold the power and volume up until the recovery screen comes up, i select recovery, when the exclamation mark appears beside the android i press the power and volume up button again to bring up the menu and i select wipe data/factory reset. It says wiping...and when its done i select reboot system now, and it loads back to my phone ... with everything still there! hahah xD
unlock the bootloader, thatll automagically wipe the phone(and everything in storage).
hello, my friend just helped me with root/flash my phone, and the system supposedly did a factory reset.
But everything is still there =( im starting to think its a virus?
Im gonna scan it, but does anyone has any experience with these type of problems?

Like someone said before, if you don't uncheck it Google will automatically install apps from your market account after putting in your account data.
yes i unchecked it already, and i doubt google will put back all my mp3 and pictures even after i did a factory reset? I don't really think thats possible...
But anyways, yes i unchecked the automatic restore box.
sorry for the troubles im causing =(
*EDIT*
Do u guys think i would be able to format my phone by using my computer to format it like any other hard disk?
Factory reset doesn't wipe the (fake) SD card by default. Did you check the box for that?
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
mp3's and pictures are not affected by a factory reset. to get rid of that stuff, do Menu > Settings > Storage > Erase USB storage.
i did that too, i even did the hard reset which supposedly wipes all data? But i reboot back in and my pattern password screen comes back up along with my usual wall paper. All my widgets still there and its like i've nvr done a reset before.

you're either not doing it right or restoring data from google... try doing it without logging back into google
i did not log back into anything, i even switched to a prepaid card to make sure i had no connections to the outside world at all lol xD
anyways derek can u please tell me what im doing wrong? I am sure i followed all the steps correctly. And the screen prompted me to make sure i wanted to erase all data, i clicked yes, and it proceeds to the "wiping data" but then when i reboot it back, everything is still there.
EDIT* I found a thread mentioning a factory format code *2767*3855# in this forum, i tried it, and it tells me connection problem or invalid MMI code. Anyone knows what gives?
please download the stock images for your phone and flash them with fastboot.

Hi, completely lost with what to do so hoping you guys can help me out. I am relatively clueless (but hopefully able to follow direction).
Heres the story:
Bought a Nexus S second hand for Rogers here in Canada. Been working great for 3 months or so.
The phone, to my knowledge, has never been rooted in anyway, hacked, etc.
So I have had Go Launcher and its associated widgets installed for some time. No issues. About a week ago I got an update notification for 2.3.6 (I was previously on 2.3.4, and even though I checked it never did find 2.3.5)
Now I heard about issues with tethering, and since I never had the search pop up issue I kept ignoring this.
Well today, the Go Launcher got 'stuck' while I was switching orientation( horizontal to verticle) and once it got unstuck recevied a ton of force close notices. I decided to power it off. It got stuck in the power off animation. I pulled the battery.
Since then, it gets stuck in the boot animation (rainbow x?). I have pulled battery numerous times, one time it sat in the animation for 20 min or so, only to restart itself and do it again.
I went to fastboot, and rebooting that way does nothing. Also, I can't go to recovery, when I do it restarts, and then the Android pops up, but eventually I get an Exclamation mark and Android and need to pull battery.
I don't think I can hook it up to the pc because I don't think I enabled usb debugging.
What are my options, any help would be greatly appreciated!
You need to flash the clock work recovery to put a new rom, first install the usb drivers for the nexus and the using dos flash the clock work recovery
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App

Is that possible even though I'm pretty sure usb debugging is not enabled?
Any idea what caused this?
Surely there is a way to reset?
OK so did the rooting procedure but stopped before actually hitting the rooting stage.
Any ideas what happened?
Could it have been Go Launcher? Or maybe enabling orientation switching caused it to freak out...
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Follow up to step 7 in the nexusshacks how to root guide and goto recovery mode now, select mounts and thrmen mount usb storage and copy a downloaded rom like cyanogen mode and goto install from zip and fromsd sdcard to install and then advance>clear delvik cache and clear cache partition before installing the rom

If you don't tick the prevent force close, a month ago mine were stuck on home screen and keep forceclosing, all i do is just install another launcher press home screen and voila
The android ! Is the recovery. Stock recovery.
You can try a factory reset from in there.
Or do the entire unlock bootloader and root thing. Unlocking will wipe the phone anyways so just try a factory reset from recovery.
At the ! There is a button press that brings you to the options. I can't recall for sure what it is though. I think it is volume up and press power but I am not certain. If you can't figure it out on your own just look it up.
You probably corrupted your sdcard partition while pulling the battery while it was trying to unmount. If that's the case your sdcard is now bad and the only way to fix is to send it in to service.

So just went ahead and rooted and now running cm7.
Unfortunately lost everything on the phone but had no choice. It was not possible to get into fastboot and use recovery. It hung at the exclamation mark.
Oh well. First time using CM7.... pretty good... mostly just seems to be stock android?
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Again the exclamation mark IS the stock recovery.
This is pretty bizarre.
I have been running CM7 nightly 180 with Trinity for about a month now. I woke up to my phone vibrating a bit - my K9 mail app got reset so it was redownloading old emails. I tried to open my Twitter app and that was reset as well. After that a bunch of force close dialogues popped up, so I rebooted my phone thinking it glitched up. Once I did that, it would show the Google logo, then the first Trinity logo, and just hang there. It did not get to the Trinity animation.
I can get into recovery, and from there I tried to restore to a backup, and it says E:Can't mount /sdcard. Do I have to Odin to fix this or is there another option? I remember the same error happening to my Vibrant, and that was the only solution.
Does anyone have any explanation as to why this happened? I didn't do anything unusual with the phone or install anything new/different at all. I plugged it in, went to bed, and woke up to this.
Strange :S. Did you try to mount SD card from recovery while you have your phone conected to PC? I hope it's not faulty storage memory problem...
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
I just tried, CWM says "Error mounting /sdcard!" This all happened with my Vibrant. It said all of the same things and I had to use Odin, and it worked, but my /sdcard was completely wiped. It just doesn't make sense since this time I didn't do anything differently; I think on my Vibrant I had installed a new ROM and then it messed up. This time it's like a phantom f**k up.
That doesn't sound so good . Seen few people with same problem, and most of them sent their devices for repairs. It was some hardware error where Odin couldn't help.
Can't be sure if that is the same problem, but it easily could be. I'm not expert, I'm just sharing what I've seen before. Let's hope I'm wrong about this one...
Ugh I really hope not. I bought this phone on eBay in August, I still owe money to Bill Me Later -_-

Get into recovery mode by turning phone off then hold volume up button then press the power button. It should go to recovery. In recovery go to advanced the mount SD card and mount data. Then try doing a restore

Try to read again what OP wrote in his/her posts...
Have you tried flashing another recovery? Or even, lock and unlock the bootloader? It should format your sd card and that might fix it.

Try use other version of recovery. It is a bug from I dunno which version of recovery.
Accidentally sent from my Google Nexus S using XDA Premium
I'm on version 5.0.0.0 of CWM, is that the buggy one by chance?
I can't get the USB driver to install here at work (Windows), I am going to have to wait til I get home to flash an updated version of CWM from my Mac.
Flashing a new recovery didn't help. My /sdcard still says error for everything. I wish Odin worked on Macs.
Just used someone's PC to use Odin and my phone hangs at "verify image (ipbl)... success." I think I'm going to throw in the towel and cut my losses at this point. I don't really have any other options.
Amazing but working solution for the same problem!
There is a post in Google mobile support were many people had the same problem and one guy exposes the solution, because I am new user, I can't link outside xda so I tell you the fix:
It's said to be a common hardware problem in this device, for me it just works when I power on after heating up with a hot air gun (other people say a hair dryer is enough)
I hope that you find this information useful
any news?? i have the same problem :'(
Heating Works
Thanks I have the same problem. I was not able to mount any of the system or sdcard partitions. Heated the phone with a heat gun and it starts up.

Pictures and notes are usually on sd card and facrory reset let sd intact. You can try first only "wipe cache" from stock recovery maybe helps.

Still cant get it to work, have been using my old phone.
How do I do a "clean wipe".
If I turn it on ,it goes to the unlock screen but wont unlock and the screen goes black but if I call the phone it goes through and the dial screen works fine.
I really need to get this working as I need the texts I have sent and received as well as everything else.
Can anyone offer any help or advice?
Biggest mistake to ever get a Motorola phone, should have stuck with Samsung.
i think ur blur launcher is having problem or u deleted it by mistake.
If any expert here makes a flashable zip of any launcher, or u can install it by adb
At this point I would recommended to reflash back to factory 2.3.5 using the fxz, and the update over the air afterwards.
Remember to always have a backup and use CWM in boot!
Follow this link and look at the instructions on how to flash the fxz: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1396650

Download "fxz" and "replace" files from Noob thread and flash it using rsd lite if its a software issue then it will be resolved if not i m afraid you will have to service it.
If you're using stock then you shouldn't have to FXZ your phone. With the phone OFF hold the up & down volume keys, and then press your power button. It should pop up the "Boot Mode Selection Menu" Release both the volume keys and then press the down volume once to highlight "Recovery." Then press the volume up button to start your recovery. Scroll to "wipe data/factory reset" using the volume down key and when it is selected press the power button. Then navigate to the "Yes -- delete all user data" using the volume keys (up or down) and press the power key when it is selected. After it has finished, it will show the first menu again. Then navigate to the "wipe cache partition" and follow the same steps as the wipe data/factory reset instructions. Once it goes back to the first menu after wiping the cache partition, then press the power button ("reboot system now" should be selected) and when your phone boots back up it will be like you just got it out of the box except you WILL still have all of your pictures and your videos.

are you rooted? if so you can reset then get all of your data back (I can explain how if you are)
If not, do you have usb debugging enabled? if so you can do a temporary root, just enough to dump your system so you can reset then restore your data the same way

Let's start here, try telling us exactly what happened and what you did to get yourself into this situation. For instance, are you rooted, running any custom roms, or are you on stock Android 2.3.6.? Which model of ATRIX 2: MB865 or ME865? Anything else you can tell us that you have done? The more information you can give, the better!

this would all be helpful. as long as he has usb debugging on he can use the root exploit to open things up enough to try pushing a launcher and if that fails dump the system so that data can be restored

100% stock.I have themb865.Only thing changed is I updated it when Motorola released that update, the one people said fixed the cam.
Here is a video of it,notice how long it takes to start up and when it reaches the screen, nothing happens. If I were to call the phone however it would work and I can receive calls. Also if I press the power button the screen wont turn back on unless I call it.It will run very hot as well.
Video of the problem.

1. Can you try bringing it up without the SD card? If you can, the card may be corrupted, may be need to put to a computer for fsck.
2. Can you connect to it via ADB? Then there are ways (google for exact command syntax: adb pull /data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/databases ... in fact pull out entire /data/data, you can extract all your contacts, sms, call log from there) to dump/restore your data.
Like i said a few posts up bud, follow the link i provided and flash the fxz. It will fix your issue. Your pics will remain on the sd card, but yes you will lose your texts. Your contacts are backed up by your google account.

I tried to take the SD card out, same thing. The SD card I got in there now is a different one I popped in the phone so I dont misplace it.It's definitely not the SD card.
I am using an older phone,my contacts are not all there, infact most arent. I need my texts as there is numbers and info in there I cant lose.
I will try what you suggested,is there any other things I should do?
I should add,the last app I installed was that Lookout Security app.
I should have stuck with Samsung, never again will I get a Motorola phone.
I realize there are multiple threads like this but throughout all of them I have not found any that relate to my issue or a combination of them. If I have missed one I apologize in advance and please direct me to that thread then. I was running steel droid what I thought was 5.5 ICS but it looks like it is 5.1 according to the forums. I was previously running steel droid 4.5 GB. I was switching back to 4.5 because I could not get wifi hotspotting to work. I forgot to wipe my cache and went to install 4.5 and I am stuck in bootloop. X+Power gives me the android error screen, M+Power allows me into the main menu but I cannot use AP fastboot, SBF motorola will not pick up my phone and the screen will show a connection to the USB cable. I've never had a problem before but also have never forgotten to wipe the cache so any thoughts would help.

I would but I get android error screen with exclamation mark each time regardless of how I access recovery X+Power or vol +,- and Power then going to recovery, I wouldn't have thought that not wiping the cache would have been the cause but it was the one step I didn't do that I normally always do so I was just adding it in for information but thanks for the know how that it wasn't the cause. Any other thoughts since I cant even get into my backup ROM or recovery, I have another SD card not sure if my SD card has become fried for some reason, I will be trying that to see if maybe that is all it is.

Well your computer should recognize your droid that's a common problem with Odin and Samsung one of these steps always work so try then and seen if we can't get your droid recognized NUMBER 4 WILL WORK 99% OF THE TIME BUT TRY THE OTHER METHODS FIRST 1. Use the stock cable or try a difrent port 2. If its possible on your program take out the battery and SD card as leaving them in course problems 3. Run the program as aminstrative 4. Plug the phone in and have it in download mode or whatever you call it WHILE THE COMPUTER IS BOOTING Up This will force the computer to recognize it not the best method but it always works
