[Q] No Mobile data - - General Questions and Answers

Hey Guys,
I tried searching, but I have no idea what I'm really looking for. I bought a used HTC Evo 3D that was used on Sprint, and switched onto my Alltel Plan. I have the MSL code that I got from CDMA Workshop, and the phone has phone, sms/mms, and wifi, but no mobile data.
The mobile data still tries to connect to the Sprint Network. How do I get it to communicate with Alltel's? Does it have to do with PRL Files or APN"s? Maybe some of the settings in the ##DATA# prompt?
I don't fully understand this stuff, and I don't really know where to go or what to look for, so I apologize if this has been asked before (most likely) or if this is in the wrong section.

Can anyone at least tell me what I need to look for to get this working, if it is at all possible? PRL's, APN's, Radios? Am I able to pull any of it off of my old CDMA Desire?
Just throw me a bone in the right direction. I've been at this for a week now and I'm just going in circles.

I think I got it:
APN's are used for sms/mms
PRL's only deal with which towers you use for calling
Radio's are what I'm looking for to get my mobile data working?
Which brings me to my next few questions.
Does it have to be a carrier specific Radio?
Does it have to come off of the same type of phone, or at least from one of similar hardware structure?
What would be my chances of flashing a foreign radio onto my phone?
If I'm going to be paying for the mobile data, I would really enjoy being able to use it

Still no luck getting it to work. Still no luck getting a reply here. Surely someone here has something valuable to say, one way or the other.

Okay Weird One Maybe?
I have been issued a CDMA Verizon branded TP2 from my employer, and currently have my personal cell through AT&T.
I have enough stuff already to keep up with and have no desire to carry two phones, I also work for a local governmentalish agency, and I have less of a desire for anyone to see my SMS or MMS contents or recipients.
I've had success in unlocking, and more or less converting to the best of the phones ability and inserted my GSM SIM to the device, and am successfully using the functions of the AT&T system using Mighty ROM. In doing this, I am also giving up a full data plan on the Verizon CDMA setup.
Any suggestions? Is there a way to point internet, and internet only to the CDMA side while still receiving calls and sending MMS/SMS via my personal GSM? Encrypt SMS/MMS and go with just the Verizon?
John
You can't use CDMA and GSM at the same time. It is one or the other.
Is there anyway to establish encryption for SMS/MMS or possibly a program that easily switches profiles between CDMA and GSM, I am also taking creative suggestions to resolving the issue, so if you can think of one, I am up for trying it...
GSM and CDMA sms will load on the same text message screens. I know of no way to separate the two.
Anyone out there actually understand what I am saying and have any experience in this area?

aabbccdd888 covered it for you.
It is essentially two phones in one. You can have one line or the other active, but not both.
Whichever line is active is the one through which phone calls and data will come through. The inactive line will dump everything to VM while inactive.
You can switch between the two at any time, though I don't know of an app offhand to do it. Someone's likely written one, but if not it shouldn't be too hard to whip up.
Easiest thing for you to do would be have the CDMA turned on from 9-5 with your "work" line, then swap to GSM (and shut off the work line) when you get off work and go home.

Much appreciated. Any method of encryption for SMS/MMS?

You might be able to hack this somehow...basically in MM rom when you choose your carrier it probably switches bands on the internet as well. You might want to e-mail the rom developer to see if he has any suggestions. At the very least it seems plausible.

Question: Sprint Touch Pro 2 be activated on Verizon

After much searching I found lots of 'no you can't's, but I haven't found any posts that are recent, ...in the last 6 months.
I have a Sprint Touch Pro 2 that I successfully got working on Page Plus. I would like to get it on my folks' Verizon family plan. I called an agent and they said if it doesn't have a Verizon logo on it, it's not possible.
I question this, but I've found no one of late posting about this.
I think the phone will work on Verizon, it may just need the ESN number activated on their network.
I remember someone here or at PPCGeeks activated it for me on PagePlus, is there anyone/any way to activate it on Verizon?
I like the phone, I just don't need data, so I don't want a regular Verizon phone.
thanks,
Yes, you can get it activated on VZW... The only problem is this... you can't do it legally or ethically... It would involve doing things against VZW's rules as well as the law... and you would need a "broken" TP2 (or other VZW phone) to do it... But that aside... the reason it worked with PagePlus is because they allow outside phones on their network, with giving you the responsibility to make it work on their network.. VZW is vey explicit that they will NOT allow anyone elses phones on their network (same with Sprint)... They are the worse 2 when it comes to that IMO..... Sorry to the bad news.... But sometimes that is how it goes.... Maybe you can post an ad on here offering to trade someone yours for the VZW version.. or maybe Craigslist?
Thanks,
Trading for a verizon phone won't work, as then I'll have to get data.
My bottom line question:
I need a smart phone, but I NEVER need data, wifi is always available for me. But I guess there is no way to have an Android phone on a Verizon network, without a data plan?
Not legally anyways, that's one of the downsides to using CDMA, the carrier has much greater control over what kind of phone you use. Thankfully they can't control the Rom/OS you run on it .
You need a Verizon rep that knows what they're doing, it can be done.

Can the Sanyo Juno be used as a donor phone?

I want to know if the Sanyo Juno can be used as a donor phone when flashing to Shift to Boost Mobile? Or does it HAVE to be an Incognito or Rant? I thought it only had to be 3g. The only reason im asking is because on the back of my Juno it says QUALCOMM 3G CDMA. Unsure exactly what that means but I always assumed my phone was 3g
Also instead of creating another topic, what i've been hearing is that Flashing my Phone to boost is a much harder Process then if I were to flash it to Metro PCS or Cricket.
Personally I'd rather have Boost since that's what I like, But what about the performance if I were to Flash to either Metro, Virgin, Cricket or even Straight Talk? Do any of the other carriers have a clear advantage over Boost? And I dont mean their network in general but more along the lines if I were to have an EVO Shift Flashed to anyone of them. Which is the best performing network to Have on EVO shift?
Just throwing this out there. I don't know where your at as far as Flashing the device. Whether you want to do it yourself, or don't care if someone else does it. I know around here where I live there are several BOOST Mobile places that will Flash the device over to BOOST for you. Fully functioning with MMS, SMS, Data, and calling features. IDK what they charge, or if they do mail order. But I'm sure if you check there should be someplace near you that will do it for you.
I just recently came back from San Antonio so I know what you mean. There is probably a phone place on every single corner that will flash your phone for you. And cheap too. Like 20-30 dollars. But right now i'm in Ashtabula Ohio. Which is basically Bumblefuck.. I wouldnt mind paying someone else to flash it but people really try to charge something ridiculous like 70-150 dollars depending on if I need a donor phone or not. That's honestly the only reason why i'm tryna figure this **** out myself because I feel that price is a rip off. IDK though, I might try cricket instead because i'm hearing that's much much easier to flash too
Have you checked HERE? You may be able to get better info, or leads.
Yeah a couple people directed me there. I read the whole thread. But it seems to me it's more about helping the original poster get his MMS and Voicemail working on his phone that's already flashed to Boost mobile. Doesn't really explain how I can go about Flashing myself.
This guide Here explains how to flash to boost. I followed it pretty good all the way to the point where I had to flip and change my esn/meid.. That's where it got confusing and I stopped as I didnt want to damage my phone.
And most of the guides I find are nearly a year old or so. So they all say that the only phones that can be used as donor phones are either the Incognito or The Rant. Meaning for me to use Boost I would have to buy either one. Which brings me back to my original question of Is the Juno capable of being a donor phone as well?
That I don't know. But I know there's a thread on how to put the OG EVO4G on Boost. It gets a lot more traffic than the Shift one. Maybe someone can point you in the right direction there. Also a quick search came up with THIS, and THIS THREAD.

[Q] Stock, not detecting my network anymore

Hi, sorry if this is promoting clutter but I've scoured the internet (google, wiki, searching these forums and others) and haven't been able to find a solution.
Some background:
Phone: Samsung Galaxy S 4G
Running stock GB 2.3.6
A couple months ago I woke up to find my phone would not pick up and connect to the t-mobile network (it constantly displayed (searching) on the dropdown menu). After trying many things it would sometimes randomly connect to the network and allow me to send/receive messages and make calls, but it doesn't last.
Things I've tried:
Rebooting
Going in and out of airplane mode
Unselecting and re-selecting use packet data
Manually searching for mobile network operators (it recognizes that there are available AT&T and T-Mobile networks, but when I try to connect to either it fails)
Performing a factory-reset
Rooting, Flashing to a different GB ROM
Factory reset, then flashing to Slim ICS instead
Performing another total wipe/reset, and now I'm back to stock.
EDIT: Sorry, I've also gone to the T-Mobile store and switched SIM cards to no avail.
I used the new SIM card in a new phone (another Samsung Galaxy S 4G) and it works perfectly fine, it's just this phone.
If anyone could give me any other ideas I'm all ears, and I appreciate any help lent in advance.
Thank you, and if you need any other information please let me know.
And you have checked your apn settings? You have an imei number listed in the about phone?

Wifi, gps, bluetooth work at all? calling or txting or data or nothing?
Heimdall one click and re-check
Sorry for the late reply, I've been on shift.
Champ: My APN settings look correct (registered on T-Mobile US, epc.tmobile.com), and I do have an IMEI number listed.
Geto: Wifi works. GPS works. Bluetooth I haven't tried. Calling/texts/data doesn't work at all.
Itzi: Just tried heimdall one click with no success =( Picks up on the T-Mobile network (instead of saying (searching)) but doesn't display the 4G/3G/etc. next to the service bars and won't text/call.
Good be a bad chip. I'd call Samsung and talk to them. They made the phone and if your still under warranty they will do the right thing.
Could be a defective modem 'cause it gave you random connections. Are you under a contract with T-Mobile? If so, they will replace it for free. Although u have to pay the replacement fee of $25. Call them.
Hit the thanks button if it helps. It's my motivator to be more helpful.
I was afraid it was a hardware issue... Thank you for all your help, guys.
I'm not under warranty nor am I under contract. Any chance they would still replace it?
Also, if not, is there anything you recommend I do with this phone? (sell it, use it for something else, etc.)

Out of warranty they will still fix it but the price may be more than the phone is worth. Its still worth calling them to find out. AS Far as other uses the thing makes an incredible mp3 player. The Wolfson DAC in it is way better than most. In airplane more just playing music I can get 20 hours plus out of this phone. Which is pretty sweet.
If you bring it to T-mo lab, Heimdall back to stock without root, or they will blame you for this and get lazy on analysis...

[Q] CyanogenMod Bell Mobility Voicemail Notification?

I'm not sure if I'm going to find an answer to this question since there are at most a dozen Photon Q's being used with Bell Mobility up in Canada, but you never know until you ask right?
Just got CM 10.1.3-RC2 (Android 4.2.2) up on my phone, and it's working great with one exception: I'm not being notified when a voicemail message is waiting for me.
I've been looking around and haven't seen anyone else posing this question in relation to the Photon Q, though there have been a few other post around for other phones. However, the suggested answers seem to vary by phone: the HTC Desire Z supposedly needs a radio update, many phones (all?) had issues with CM7, the Inspire 4G apparently needs a bit of specific code., etc...
Does anyone have a solution to this for the Photon Q?
I would love to know how you managed to get Bell's service on your phone, as it doesnt show up properly in their MEID database and they cant give me a straight answer before I use my credit card.

Hey unfortunately I never got this sorted out. I'm now running 4.3 and still having the same problem. For me it's not too much of an issue as people rarely seem to make phone calls these days, but I just kind of check my voicemail manually every few days just to be safe.
But you still have voice/text working? I tried bringing it to a Bell store today and they couldn't activate it without a certain hexadecimal 11-key number that's unique to the device.

I do have voice, text, and all the other stuff working just fine. I didn't even talk to Bell about "activating" my device, I just took the sim card out of my old phone and put it in the new one, and voila. However, I believe it depends what rom you're running... I'm using CyanogenMod and I believe they include some specific settings to get the phone up on various carriers.
Sorry if this is an obvious question, but you've done the hardware mod needed to use a Canadian (or other) SIM card right?
Basically everything I did I found in a single thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1929143 It's a long one but chances are you'll find what you need to know somewhere in there!
Ah, I thought you were using their CDMA network. Trying that route before having someone do the mod for me. I'm thinking the key might be the MIN.
