Infuse data/SIM issues? - Samsung Infuse 4G

Hey guys, I have an issue with my Inspire and just wondering if any of you could shed some light on what might be wrong. So I bought the Infuse on craigslist, and I everything works out fine. I slip in my SIM card and all is well. Wifi is working and I am getting a couple bars so text and calling works just fine. Problem is... data wasn't working.
So I called up AT&T support and they upgraded my data plan to 4G and had me reboot my phone. This kind of worked. I finally got the H+ icon but the browser wouldn't even load up the AT&T default homepage. Only facebook worked (it partially loaded) and even that took a minute, maybe more. At the moment, I am still using a Cingular 3G SIM card so I asked the rep if a 4G SIM might solve it. He said maybe so I am getting one shipped to me. So here are my questions...
Is my device somehow damaged (although no exterior damage at all) as to where I can still get service but no/terrible data speed? Is my old SIM corrupt in some way? Could a 4G SIM really solve the issue or is it wishful thinking? This old SIM worked fine on my HTC Inspire 4G, but for some reason the data didn't work at first on the Infuse and was blatantly slow after I got it to work.

I was told by att that an old sim card would have no effect on data speeds but I made them give me a new one anyway. Find a friend that had a 4g plan and put their sim in you phone and see if it acts the same way. Also is it possible you just have crappy data in your area? Do the sites open good with wifi?

Data isnt too bad in my area, it worked fine with the inspire. Wifi is very fast on my infuse. Its just when using the data that it gets super slow. Ill have to check data tomorrow when i am out of my house and see if it gets any better. Im just hoping it isnt a defect or damage because i am not the original owner so i am screwed in terms of warranty arent i?

Warranty transfers with ownership, based on the first used date. Anytime I get a 2md hand phone, I immediately do a warranty claim.

Interesting, so how would I go about doing that when I have no paperwork because I got it off Craigslist? This is what the Samsung site says about warranty on the phone.

3G to 4G issue and ?

History:
Company issued BB Curve 3g
Bought my own Captivate, took SIM from BB and put into Captivate. Voice and DATA work great. Now I have a nice phone that work pays for
Yesterday I bought an Infuse, took 3g SIM from cappy and put in it. Voice calling works NO data though.
Go to AT&T cust center this morning and they replace the sim with a new 4g one. Still NO DATA. Put the new 4g sim in the cap everything works fine - in Infuse only voice but no data which means no email = can't use for work & out a lot of money.
Does anyone know a fix for this or even why it's happening ? Will rooting it fix it ?
Yes, they have to switch you to a 4g plan in the system, your features and cost will still be the same but you will have "4g data plan". I know because I had the same issue. They had to enter my imei number into the system and then make the switch. It works in the captivate because that's a 3g device.
infuse 4g "a lot a screen real estate"
Which means I'm screwed because my IT people would not authorize that to be done as I am only allowed to use a BB or Iphone. Neither do I like. They were quite pissed when I told them I removed the sim from my BB. So no way to use the new Infuse. Not going to make the wife happy considering I shelled out cash for it last night.
Just curious, did you actually check to make sure 'packet data' was enabled in wireless settings under mobile networks?
That's the probable cause, you shouldn't need to change your data plan if coming from a captivate

yep. Everything is checked. Its a 4g issue and my company won't authorize attaching my blackbery data plan to the iemi of the new infuse because we aren't allowed to used android devices

its not that you need a "4g plan" its some network protocol they have to change. its actually the same one that the iphone uses. the guy in the att store showed me. i was making sure they would not touch my plan. no way im getting rid of my unlimited data.

He needs the 4g plan because when they enter the imei of the infuse, the Rep can't proceed unless they select the appropriate 4g plan, trust me I spent almost 2 hrs on the phone with ATT last week before they finally figured it out. He will still have the same features he has now but they need to select "4g".
infuse 4g "a lot a screen real estate"
Yup, I had the same issue, upgrade from cappy to infuse - DATA not working with the 3G sim. I had to activate the 4G sim came with the phone - NO DATA connectivity until the att technical support had set me up for "4G plan" and IMEI should be set for that. Then got the DATA working like a breeze. All happened in 10 mins.
I've switched back and forth between an iPhone 3g, Samsung Vibrant, Motorola Atrix and the Samsung Infuse with the same sim card and I've never had any of the issues that you all are having.
I get voice, text and data flawlessly with any of the phones, without the need to change my plan. Just because you may be on a 3G plan shouldn't hinder you from being able to use data on your Infuse. Unless you've somehow come across some kind of fluke, I would start looking at something else as the problem rather than what they have your plan designated as.
I concur with everyone above. Same exact plan on the surface, so your IT guys wouldn't even know, but the plan code is different....
You actually have to own or be authorized to make plan modifications in order to even switch the plans. If its through your company, I don't think they would put you on the account as an authorized person to change plans...
BUT you can always try.... sorry....

its not so much the plan as the fact that my company won't allow the current plan to be tied to the new infuse. I'll post the email exchange I had with my company in a bit.

That be the case. So I'm stuck with the captivate which is better than my company policy of BB or Iphone only.
So if anyone would like a BRAND NEW Infuse in the box for the same $500 I bought it for last night let me know. Free shipping

rebooting to get data back??

Seems like today is worse than normal for data drops (like multiple times per hour) but most tines I have to debit to get it back. Airplane mode trick not working...also 3g not working at all. Anybody else having these issues?

Happens all to frequently for me. Go get a new sim from verizon, problem solved till next time:-/
p.s I'm on my fourth sim, and second charge. every month or so.
I really hope the SIM isn't gone - I hate going back to stock just to go to Verizon and get a new SIM, not to mention every time I go to Verizon I get hounded about "look at this new tablet" or "What can I try like hell to sell you even though you said 100 times you are just hear for quick service". They should really just give us new phones or replacements for all this bull. The Charge is a POS. I pay way too much with 4 smartphone lines to have to deal with this crap.
Sorry for the rant, but every time I call them I get a BS answer. I miss Alltel and their supurb customer service. I think once my contracts are up I am going to change carriers. LTE is not nearly as fast as it was before, and really isn't any faster than HSPA now
I just got off the phone with tech support regarding the same data drop issues. They insist on sending a CLN replacement and if that fails then call and talk about replacement options. Other people have even been able to swap out to a Rezound at no charge. Call tech support and see what they can do to help you out.

I had a problem earlier for a little bit. Toggle airplane worked for me atleast. I have a spare sim. Just called when my wife was getting a CLN and said I need a sim. Funny thing is the phone was regular mail at 5 days and my sim card was a full box fed ex 2 day. Wonder why charges are so high.
Tech support told me that they are sending me either a thunderbolt or rezound...he mentioned thunderbolt first and when I told him I already had one of those and it had its problems as well, although none as bad as the charge pos, he said really it just came out last month...then further into the transaction he called it a rezound and not a thunderbolt so I honestly have no idea what to expect. He also sent the battery and door at no charge (said since I have 5 active lines he could waive the fee), but they will be in separate shipments. So either way I am better off than now, guess I find out in a few days what I get

Need help from Verizon employee

So i am dropping 4g a lot and i am pretty sure it is my sim. It happened to me once before i started rooting so i went to a Verizon store, they inspected my phone for about an hour and then swapped my sim.
I am not home right now but once i get back to Madison i am going to flash to stock and go to a store. Basically i want to know how to get an employee there that knows what he is doing because i know they exist. most of them follow instructions from a computer and try to get you to buy an accessory. I would prefer to be in and out in 10 mins because it is a simple sim swap.

You could just go buy a sim and leave. Or buy online. Ive noticed some spotty data now and then around Milwaukee....however.... with the lack of snow I have spent a lot of time on wifi sitting on my ass at home.

You shouldn't have to buy a new SIM, if it is causing issues, VZW should swap it out free of charge.

When your dealing with customer service/tech support it's kind of random to find someone who knows what they are doing. However, if you complain enough and know exactly what you want from them going in, you can probably get them to do what you want with patience and persistence.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G
I agree, it's completely random. I got laid off with all the techs, but people all over nyc and new jersey on the vzw side would call me for any major issues instead of tech support(not to toot my horn, but it goes to show you how random it is...even when you had direct lines to knowledge people who have access to stuff you need normally 9/10 times would fall back on pre generated info). Honestly I would keep trying till you get what you like , our get a sim swapped and you can get a free sim swap from any store our they can mail out from tech support, though the store is faster. Also if someone else has vzw service and 4g check there service they should have around the same service, I.e. 1 bar to your 3 or similar.

Infuse data issues - possible solution

Hello, everyone. Long time member but this is my first post.
Anyway, I've had my Infuse 4G since June 2011. I really love the phone and enjoy trying the custom ROMs, especially Zeus. The phone worked great until about 2 months ago when my data plan stopped working.
To make a long story short, there may be an incompatibility with all Infuse 4G phones and the AT&T network towers in my area.
I apologize for the length of the email, but here's all the details for anyone who is interested:
I noticed that I would have intermittent data connections even though I had a steady 3-4 bars of H+. Voice and SMS would work fine, but the internet/sync/speed tests would be slow or non-existent. While I had an active voice call, the data was fine. About a minute after I hung up, the data would stop working again. I was afraid I fried something in the modem with all the ROM experiments.
I called AT&T customer service and they tried all the typical "quick fixes" like verifing the APN settings and making sure "Use packet data" was enabled. They reset the data plan on my account and replaced my SIM twice. They wanted me to replace my phone, but my wife has the same phone and she has the same problems. It seemed like the data would be better when away from the house, so I convinced them to open a network trouble ticket on my local tower.
One day while I was at work, they sent a technician out to my house and they said the tower was fine, but my house was on the line between the segments of the local tower. This combined with "an unusually high number of activations in my area" was the cause of my problem.
I called BS on this because my phone and house haven't changed in the prior 9 months when everything worked fine. They did credit me for both data plans for the month, so I can't complain too much.
I decided to call their bluff and get a new phone. When I walked into the local Device Support Center, I didn't finish explaining my problem before they asked me if it was the Infuse. It's as if they already knew the rest of my story and said that all Infuse owners in a 10-15 mile radius were experiencing the same problem. They previously had AT&T network technicians out and they confirmed it was isolated to the towers in the local region and isolated to the Infuse. They worked with Samsung who confirmed it wasn't the particular phones they looked at, but a network issue.
I'm currently in the process of getting approval for a new make/model even though I'm not yet half way through my contract. It looks like the local support center is pushing for a Galaxy S2 replacement for both phones, but it hasn't been approved yet.
I'll follow up here when I get more information, but I thought this might help others out there with data problems on their Infuse.
Thanks.
Matt
ITS IMPOSSIBLE for it to be singled out to one phone .. it really is .. unless course lets say, there was only one LTE 4G model phone and LTE was having issues then only that one model phone would have problems ... our Infuse runs on hspa+ like the inspire 4g and so on, so all those phones would have issues as well .. BUT hey if ur getting a replacement S2 (which runs on the same tower/network/apn as the infuse lmao) then I say go for it

@jpapa1086, I hear what you're saying and I didn't believe it at first either. I originally went to the repair center to swap my phone and rule it out. While she was on the phone, I heard the repair center manager offer to forward an email to the warranty department from AT&T's own network support technician that confirmed the Infuse had issues and other phones did not on specific tower sites.
Like I said earlier, I thought I fried something in the modem with my custom ROMs, but my wife's phone was still stock Froyo and hers stopped working around the same time.
I'm a network engineer for a living and it seemed to me like there is a network routing issue, not a radio communication issue. This is just my opinion, but I'm wondering if there's some kind of firewall or filter, perhaps involved in the throttling system, that is mis-configured for my area.
Either way, Fedex delivered two (referbished) S2s to me today and they are working just as well as the Infuse did on day one.
I'm not saying this is the cause of all Infuse data issues, but I'm offering my experience to the community just in case it may help someone else.
Thanks.

Exchange/Replacement Signal issues...

Hey guys.
So I came to VZW after being on Sprint for like 10 years. Signal is way better in my area on Verizon. Except on this GS3 - can't send texts, breaking up calls, dropped calls... you know of it on these boards. Sprint was better by 100%. I've always had HTC's and knew Samsungs have the weakest radios but wow! anyway... I read some other sites and threads here - seems I need a new phone, and it MAY fix it if I get a good one...
I may be able to get an exchange even though I'm out of the 15 days because I used to work at a phone store - I'm good with the managers. But lets say that doesn't work. Should I quick add insurance to make a claim, or go the manufacture warranty route? Or what is the best way to get a replacement? I don't keep up on much on Verizon and Samsung - have there been any statements about this issue, or any fixes you guys have come up with?
Thanks!

There's no need to go either route. Verizon will replace a defective phone for one year, provided you purchased it from them. Many stores don't do instant swaps, but call Verizon Tech Support, and most of the time, you'll have a refurb next day. They won't replace banged up or wet phones, though. I just went through 4 GNexs and have a S3 waiting for me when I'm home from business, now.

The signal isn't that great, but if it's a no SIM problem I think that's a firmware/software thing Samsung or Verizon needs to handle. It's not an uncommon issue, and it's sometimes maddening.

It won't matter if its from Walmart. I bought mine from best buy and got it replaced with a refurbished that was actually brand new. You might not get as lucky as me but a used working phone is still better then what you got.Your looking at either a hardware or sim issue. Mine was hardware.

Ah mine doesn't say no SIM but rather just drops service completely, just breaks up in conversation, loses data in good 3g and 4g, and won't pick up 4g sometimes. I even called my wife 1 foot away and the first call dropped before she could answer and the second worked for 20 seconds, then she couldn't hear me, and it droppped a few seconds later. She talks for hours in this spot on a Reality.
