'Shocking Sensation" Low current running through backcover while charging - HTC Sensation

My sensation has a low voltage current running through the cover while charging. When holding the device while plugged in you get "shocked" (its better described as a tingly feeling). I did not have this problem before but i first noticed it after i got my sensation fixed by Vodafone. I send it in for repair and i don't know wat the exact problem was but they replaced the whole motherboard.
Does anyone have or had the same problem or have any ideas what i could do about it because i don't really want to sent it in again after last time when i had to go without my phone for 3 weeks.

Charger is probably defective. AC current should never get to the phone, but is coming in thru the ground in the charge cable.

or as the antennas are in the back cover this could be another issue?

I have the same issue when I charge the phone with a 3rd party dock. I can't remember having the issue with the AC charger. I'm going to test this tomorrow. However, I don't see this as a problem.

I dont think it is the charger because it also accurs when charging via my usb port on my laptop with a different cable. Its just so weird lol.
Maybe it is indeed the antennas. I will try with a backcover of the sensation of a friend of mine, when i have the chance, to see what happens. It is not really a big problem but i'm worried this will lead to other problems.

I also facing the same problem since beginning of buying this sensation. I'm using the stock charger that come with the phone. I think this is normal. Its happen to all my phone before (HD2, Desire, DHD and now sensation).
No others side effect happen from this tingly feeling to the phone.

Stock psu provides 5V DC.
One suggested solution is carefully bend up the silver contact on the back of the phone.

yes bending the contacts works, and you're good with soldering iron try putting some solder on the housing itself to give full contact to the back housing. works for me and there's a thread on this (with pictures too) try a search for that thread

I get it too charging via USB. Its like a static shock in the wintertime when you scuff your shoes on carpet and touch a doorknob.

This issue may be due to it being repaired, I mean everyone has an off day and makes a mistake. But also you are not the first person that has posted noticing the tingling sensation you get when you are charging your Sensation either. So who knows this could be yet another small problem us users are finding with the device, I have not passed judgment yet.

This is highly unlikely, most standard USB wall chargers do not have a ground prong to connect to insert into the ground terminal of a wall receptical. Also a USB cable only has two wires for power transfer. Meaning one is for the positive and one for the negative to complete the circuit. Not to mention if this was the cause the OP would not be complaining about getting a tingle, but of constantly having to re trip a breacker or replace a blown fuzz.

I don't get shocked if I touch the phone while it's charging but if I touch it with the dorsal side of my finger/hand there is a slight buzzing feeling, like a high frequency, low amplitude vibration. This only happens if I touch it with only one hand/finger. If there are more contact points, the buzzing feeling disappears. So when I pick up the phone the buzzing disappears.

mOrE URGENT HELP WATED - Have I fried my Nexus One?

Hi guys,
I stupidly plugged my Nexus One USB cable into a higher voltage charger in my car, about 8v-10v I think, and I could immediately smell burning. I unplugged it straight away and the phone died. The result was;
1. I could no longer charge it off the wall charger or computer USB charger, just got zero response, no led's etc.. seemed as though the phone was totally gone.
2. Then I took the battery out and charged it in my external battery charger. When I put the battery back in the phone it turned on and worked perfectly!!! although the battery didn't seem to last as long.
3. When it was powered on an working, it wouldn't pick up the USB connection to my PC. Did nothing.
So.... it seems as though the USB port is obviously not working. Would this be the extent of the damage or would it be something more serious in the phone?
Would the official Google dock allow me to charge the phone and connect it to my computer given that it uses the 3 pin method and not the USB?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Morgan
Ahhhh the smell of a resistor going. And within a circuit when one major component goes it will drag some others with it. Which could explain short battery life. Back up your stuff. And look into your options to replace device. Unless you have extencesive knowlege on micro surface mounted printed circuit board components and measureing values.
good day.
I don't have any knowledge of circuit boards so is there any other options to repairing this device? It is basically brand new!
Is there any chance that a dock would allow me to charge it?
If not, can I replace the main board? I disassembled it yesterday and know how to change it out.

Just guessing, but no. The cooked components for the charging circuit would also be in parallel to the dock port.

[UPDATED] I think I killed my phone! (monoprice.com cable issue)

I think my G2X is officially dead. I was getting sudden lock ups with Bionix and Eaglesblood ROMs. Last night my phone did a hard reset on its own and now today when being used it quickly overheats and shuts down. The battery will not charge past 12%. I have switched ROMs and have now gone back to all stock and it still gets super hot and shuts down even when idling. The battery isn't getting hot it is the phone itself. It appears to be hottest right around where the camera lens is. I never OC'd it just ran custom ROM and kernel. Going to order a replacement tomorrow but was curious if anyone else experienced this with the G2X?
I definitely haven't. My battery gets a little hot when pushing a game or app. Def not around the camera though.

If you got the phone thru Tmo, hit them up for a replacement.
Yeah, I went back to all stock including kernel last night. Left it plugged in overnight to see if it would charge. After being plugged in for 8 hours turned off the battery charged to 71%. Calling today to get a replacement. Not sure what happened, but it is definitely FUBAR.
I figured out what killed my phone! My phone died right after using an HDMI cable I purchased from monoprice.com. Just found another thread on here with a half dozen people with the exact same issue. Be careful with HDMI cables, especially ones from monoprice! Monoprice actually posted in the thread and is offering support but I would recommend not using their cable on your phone, at least until the problem is resolved.

No, but if you do a search on the forums, you will find almost a dozen phones that have been fried immedately after plugging in a monoprice.com HDMI cable in.. and they all got hot... fried.
Do a search, I think monoprice came on the forum and started to interject.. Not sure if it was resolved or not.. Regardless, the name monoprice, is forever etched in my mind as at the bottom of the list for purchases. Edit - Here is the thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1057564
im still trying to figure this out is the phones dieing before you plug the cable into the tv or after? i would look at the hdmi port on the phone before the cable there have been others on here that the hdmi port dont work at all for them. Monoprice cam on to the forums and was trying to get PIDs of cables and stuff and nobody responded back unless they did it via pms.
i have used monoprice for lots of cables and everyone that i have gotten have worked great. i have a hdmi cable from amazon comming and after i get it as long as my hdmi works i will get a cable from monoprice and see if it kills my phone. can everyone post the PID from you're cable so we can see if there is a link please.

It makes me wonder if it is a combination of hand-shake issues combined with a bad HDMI-out driver that was written poorly by LG. Maybe the driver when linked with these types of cables cause the GPU to overload to a degree that it permanently damages the phone somehow and subsequently also damaging the battery (e.g., suddenly drawing so much power from the battery that it fries the battery's onboard mobo as well which would explain the FUBAR-ed battery readings after)?
I can't fathom why a cable would permanently damage the phone. It's like saying that a bad cable can damage a PS3 when connecting to a TV. While I'm not an electrical engineer by any means, my logic would indicate that it's something to do with the HDMI-out driver by LG that's frying the phone.
the only other think i saw is that all the micro hdmi cables are Ethernet compatible maybe somthing in the pin out on the g2x is causing issues

My Charger melted

wtf...
tablet wasnt charging. The charger was plugged into the outlet with the usb cable connected.
i noticed my tablet was dead and when i go to charge it, i feel the cable is hot..
then notice rubber/plastic casing that covers the pin connection, is melted.
(the part with ASUS name)
not sure where to see the model number. i just smelled it and its not good... fawk
I wonder if they got the same company as apple to make the proprietry cables lmao
But seriously thats not cool send the pics to asus they will probably send you a new one and a cover or something to keep you happy

Contact ASUS, send them pics. Do Not send them the unit yet. If they don't replace it immediately, send it to UL Labs.
Asus tech support have the tendency to not think at all and just declare your warranty voided because the outside is melted or whatever. They always claim it's a sign you tamper with it.

i have to do so as well
With the history ASUS has with AC power adapters we all need to keep a watchful eye on our adapters. It appears they maybe under built. Meaning the components used in their construction are not big enough to handle the load.
Maybe we need to follow DEVCAKE's thread and build an AC adapter?
hshoem1
By the way my adapter died yesterday.
I've never noticed anything with my TF's charger (I just worry about the cable getting damaged at the docking connector), but now that you metion that...did notice that my Eee PC's charger always did get awefully hot at the brick :-S
So i called yesterday after i got lost in that crap website. most links would end up dead.
The rep gave me an RMA number and emailed me instructions.
I sent them an email with the pic. THanks for the suggestion. Hopefully i can get something resolved.
For now...i cant even charge the damn thing.
I know this is almost a month old since the last post, but curious to know, did they give you any push back or require the old 1 back?
Same here. My Asus charger is very very hot. I need to emphasize the very because its really very hot.
These chargers are very cheap. Running hot is a known issue and if it quits working put it in a ziplock bag and put it in the freezer for 30 minutes. Sounds stupid but it will reset the overload switch in the charger. I've done it. I also don't keep my tab on the charger all the time.

Ever since I got my first asus product, (eee pc 2Gig surf) I have had charger issues. They always make them very flimsy. My transformers charger gets extremely hot as well. My grandpa owns a viewsonic gTab and the charger for that doesn't burst into flames like mine when he charges it. Thanks for the pictures, I won't leave it plugged in when its not charging anymore.

I had to do something like this with my ASUS netbook. It had an indicator light on it that would randomly stop working because it got too hot. Had to unplug it for up to an hour to get it to work again. On that note anyone know of any third party transformer chargers that work better/less hot?

Did you include the socket adapter (UK/usa/europe plugs)? Or just the bare adapter...
Have to send it in as well (getting it picked up tomorrow) and wondering whether or not to include the plugs/adapter.
i love how asus charges $50 for this overheqting piece of **** charger. if they are going to pull an Apple on pricing then the quality better be top notch
Mine died to (I don't really know from what but i'm guessing from overheating or some low quality issue), and I found a perfectly fine 12v output AC adaptater with USB port for 10$ in a supermarket. It's a little heavier but have a much longer cable and doesn't threaten to burn my house during the night.
But loosing the USB cable itself must be anoying.

Touchscreen issues when charging

Anyone having issues with your touch screen when you are using it while it's chArging? Just wondering if i have a faulty device or are there others with the same problem
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
No my device does not have this issue when charging. I think this issue has something to do with the charger.
That's a grounding problem, had it with my SGSII try a different cable.
The sensation had an issue of touchscreen problems while charging. i went through 3 phones. The cause is the same cause as the wifi errors that people are having with the HOX. Bad connection from unibody(sensation) to board.. If we added aluminum foil or solder (just like the HOX wifi issue) it would fix the problem. On the sensation the problem got really bad to where you couldnt unlock the phone with the lockring. grounding issue. I hope the HOX isnt having that same issue and you just have a bum phone or better yet a bum cord or charger. let us know if its either
yeah happened alot on my s2, was due to usb cable or something
but works fine when im charging

Every time this has happened it has been because of what the USB cable was plugged in to and not the cable itself. Try the charger it came with in a regular plug. If it doesn't work better then it is a phone problem.
This happens to me too. Charging from the laptop with an eBay (chinese) cable causes the touchscreen to be unresponsive.
Here's how to test: Open the Notes and draw a few lines very fast.
Here's the results:

No USB Charging
Here is a video of it happening to me on my skyrocket. It was because of the charger. Try a different cable, then a different wall adapter.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x__jdlGXyjk
It is because of the charger...it's always recommended to use the charger that came with the phone eventhough they give us a tiny a$$ USB cable.

Yes, I have an issue - when the phone gets to 90%+ while charging, the screen becomes very unresponsive. The drags don't drag - instead the touches are registered as taps.
You can get an app like MultiTouch Test - and you will see, it's very clear to see when this happens.
My first One X device did not have this issue, so it's something specific to my current unit. Doesn't bother me much, since it only happens at 90%+ charge, while plugged in...

To me it doesn't happen all the time, sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't. Unplugging the cable and plugging it back in seems to temporarily fix the problem, if I leave it charging for a couple more minutes, I think the problem will come back, but again, unplugging/plugging it back, solves it temporarily. It's weird...
Oh, and all this to say that I observed this behavior while charging around 65%, not 90%. And I've only observed this while charging with AC power with the original cable and charger. The problem did not present itself (yet) while charging through USB.

Along with touchscreen problems it got VERY hot located as you are looking at the camera side it got hot on the top right side near the camera. Dunno what that could be. It's caused by electrical noise. The voltage supplied from your mains outlet is alternating current (typically 50/60hz in frequency). a usb charger has to do two things; firstly step down the voltage (110v/230v/240v down to 5v) and secondly rectify the alternating current into direct current (positive and negative). how it does this is by using a transformer which employs an iron core surrounded by copper windings, this generates a lot of rf (radio) which travels down the cables to the device as well as broadcasting a short distance through the air, a decent charger will use shielding as well as a few other pieces of circuitry which will neutralize the rf given off. In order to rectify the voltage the charger will use a variety of diodes and capitors, in a cheap Chinese charger they will typically use as little as 2 and possibly a generic chemical capacitor (similar to a small battery) these degrade over time and can get quite hot, fat and eventually burst - when you hear about chargers exploding or setting on fire it's usually because the capitors aren't up to the job. a Chinese charger may have all the quality control and certification stamps but most of them are forged, if you buy a charger for less than $10 this is what your likely to end up with. the outputted voltage may appear 5v on a multimeter but they are a very dirty output and can spike from 3v to 7v or even more the load on the charger increases. The dirty output interferes with the mechanism used on touch screen devices which also employ a type of capacitance to register where you are pressing on the screen. A decent charger will use solid state capitors and which should last a lifetime.
if the smartphone miss behaves whilst charging 90% of the time it's because of a faulty charging device (or one employing poor components). a decent charger may cost more $20 but they are significantly safer for both you and the device.
The problem with mains sockets with built in usb usually comes down to shielding, they will either have none or be earthed (which might sound like a good idea but in practise a lot of domestic devices will create leakage to earth causing more noise - alot of studio equipment will have a separate earth). These may not be as dangerous as cheap Chinese chargers but still undesirable.
If a original or good quality charger isn't available one of the best sources for charging a phone will actually be a desktop pc with a usb3 port. The whole pc is insulated in a nice metal case and there are a plefora of high quality components to create a stable clean power supply (a cpu voltage tolerance is usually measured to 2 decimal places of a volt which is pretty good).
Ditch the rubbish cheap chargers, you honestly get what you pay for and they aren't good for the long term health of the phone. If it hums or makes a high pitch noise whilst plugged in your playing with fire - literally. they aren't bothered if your phone dies in 6 months or bursts into flames so long as they get the $5 x 100,000 people who buy them (these things literally cost pennies for them to put together, even though the case might look the business inside they are nasty and as cheap as)

Very insightful. The worst part is that I have two original HTC chargers and they both emit the high pitched noise.

Some of the very small chargers might whistle a little, its called coil noise and isn't as bad as capacitors about to pop. The iron core hasn't been sufficiently dampened or glued into the case so it resonates when the ac passes through it, the pitch may change depending on the voltage (whether its a 230v or 110v power supply). It isn't unsafe but HTC should be doing a better job at checking the new chargers, over time most chargers will develop coil noise as glue tends to melt or degrade.
Very insightful video, you'll never buy a cheap charger again
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wi-b9k-0KfE&feature=youtube_gdata_player
The gist being the cheap chargers could very well set on fire and the USB could go live at mains voltage with no circuit protection, death traps spring to mind. Be careful what you buy.

[Q] Need Replacement Charging Port

The tablet needs a new charging/interface port and was wondering if anyone knows where I can get one?
I have searched Ebay and the net for a used/new one. The port looks fine but when plugging the cable in it won't charge. Sometimes I can get it to if I push and hold it just right however this is tricky to do and does not work often. So right now it is a dead brick. The pins must not be making full contact for some reason.
Ive bought parts from these guys before, I don't see a charging port but might be worth giving them an email and asking

Thanks but I would rather not have to order parts from Sweden. If I have to I'll just keep watching Ebay. Every so often one pops up but doesn't last very long.
Good luck
The parts I ordered took about 4-6 weeks to arrive iirc
Just installed a new (used off Ebay) charging port with fingers crossed that it will allow the tablet to charge. I also have a new high quality charging cord (PWR+) and two ASUS wall chargers that I know work. Plugged the tablet in and was relieved to see the tablet come right on and show it charging. Let it charge to about 20% and then decided to unplug it so I could put the ring back on the tablet so it is all back together. Get the ring on and plug the tablet back in and nothing. I'm about to throw this thing in the trash right now. So fed up with these charging issues. What changed? All I did was unplug it, put the ring on, and plug back in.
So for kicks I decide to try the other wall charger and what do you know....it came on immediately and started charging and is still charging. I'm afraid to touch the thing now. Seems once it is charging and undisturbed it will charge to 100% no problem. However, when going to recharge it won't charge. Could there be something in the charging mechanism causing the thermal to trip in the wall chargers? Is there possibly a small short somewhere in the charging mechanism? Anyone have an opinion on why this is happening? Only other thing I can think of is doing a full wipe/reset and maybe flashing another rom (is currently on newest Android Revolution HD) once it is charged up.
Could the ring (I assume you mean Bezel ? ) or the screws near the port be shorting the charging port to earth/ground/chassis ?

Yep.. Sry.. The bezel. Not sure how but anything is possible. Would indicate to me a faulty charging port or charger cord and is happening on multiple. Tablet is still allowing me to charge it at this time after switching chargers and with the bezel on so will have to see how it goes.
Sent from my tricked out S4.
Fingers crossed it was a coincidence with the first charger, if not, I'd try taking the bezel off again and see if you can spot the short / see if it works again with the bezel off, or even just with the screws out
