'Shocking Sensation" Low current running through backcover while charging

My sensation has a low voltage current running through the cover while charging. When holding the device while plugged in you get "shocked" (its better described as a tingly feeling). I did not have this problem before but i first noticed it after i got my sensation fixed by Vodafone. I send it in for repair and i don't know wat the exact problem was but they replaced the whole motherboard.
Does anyone have or had the same problem or have any ideas what i could do about it because i don't really want to sent it in again after last time when i had to go without my phone for 3 weeks.

Charger is probably defective. AC current should never get to the phone, but is coming in thru the ground in the charge cable.

or as the antennas are in the back cover this could be another issue?

I have the same issue when I charge the phone with a 3rd party dock. I can't remember having the issue with the AC charger. I'm going to test this tomorrow. However, I don't see this as a problem.

I dont think it is the charger because it also accurs when charging via my usb port on my laptop with a different cable. Its just so weird lol.
Maybe it is indeed the antennas. I will try with a backcover of the sensation of a friend of mine, when i have the chance, to see what happens. It is not really a big problem but i'm worried this will lead to other problems.

I also facing the same problem since beginning of buying this sensation. I'm using the stock charger that come with the phone. I think this is normal. Its happen to all my phone before (HD2, Desire, DHD and now sensation).
No others side effect happen from this tingly feeling to the phone.

Stock psu provides 5V DC.
One suggested solution is carefully bend up the silver contact on the back of the phone.

yes bending the contacts works, and you're good with soldering iron try putting some solder on the housing itself to give full contact to the back housing. works for me and there's a thread on this (with pictures too) try a search for that thread

I get it too charging via USB. Its like a static shock in the wintertime when you scuff your shoes on carpet and touch a doorknob.

This issue may be due to it being repaired, I mean everyone has an off day and makes a mistake. But also you are not the first person that has posted noticing the tingling sensation you get when you are charging your Sensation either. So who knows this could be yet another small problem us users are finding with the device, I have not passed judgment yet.

This is highly unlikely, most standard USB wall chargers do not have a ground prong to connect to insert into the ground terminal of a wall receptical. Also a USB cable only has two wires for power transfer. Meaning one is for the positive and one for the negative to complete the circuit. Not to mention if this was the cause the OP would not be complaining about getting a tingle, but of constantly having to re trip a breacker or replace a blown fuzz.

I don't get shocked if I touch the phone while it's charging but if I touch it with the dorsal side of my finger/hand there is a slight buzzing feeling, like a high frequency, low amplitude vibration. This only happens if I touch it with only one hand/finger. If there are more contact points, the buzzing feeling disappears. So when I pick up the phone the buzzing disappears.

there IS a difference in usb cables

I have read so many threads with problem x solved by using a quality USB cable, and yet I still find others arguing that there is no difference in cheap cables. In-fact i have just had a discussion about this with a friend yesterday so i thought i would just let everyone know - USE A GOOD CABLE!
To test this I used an ebay cable, oem samsung, oem moto, and a case logic cable. I then simply transferred a small 6 mb file and a larger 200mb file to the phone.
Ebay - phone wouldn't even connect to pc.
Sam - both worked
Moto - both worked
Case - 6 mb worked, 200 started and then completely froze forcing phone reboot.
So again, especially when flashing, use a good cable!

Just another heads up... My wife has a Motorola and I have the siii. Using my siii cable, both of our phones charge at least three times faster. Using the Motorola cable, both of our phones charge much slower.

Most Likely those talking about difference in Cables could be talking about how each manufacture alters their cable.
For example, Moto and Samsung have a Resister that links 2 of the 5 pins which is hidden in the plastic. Reason for this is, Car docks, it would tell phone to open car dock App etc, Same for media docks.
Charger usb cables are same because some phones can handle a higher amp of charging which charges faster while a standard usb cable needs to made to have a limit to not fry the device it is being used on.
Hope This helps, i know it did when I learned this,. Now it makes more reasons and ideas for Mods...LOL

If you're using a charger for a different device, it's likely that they have different amperage. A 2 amp charger will charge your phone a LOT faster than, say, the 0.5 amps off your computer's USB port. In this case, it's not the USB cable itself, but the amperage of the transformer in the charger. Some may argue that the slower charge is "better" and will help your battery last longer.
If you're using the same charger with different USB cables, then this is news.

I haven't even used the OEM cable that came with my GSIII. I picked up a 6 foot no name USB cable from newegg for $1.39 and it works fine.

Was going to point this exact thing out. It is also possible the cables could be rated for passing different rates but it is much more likely that something is putting off more power so it charges faster. I do tend to agree though that slower is better since you can pull the plug faster and not overcharge

Over time I end up having loose connection problems with virtually any microusb cable i buy, including from monoprice. At first the cable plugs into the phone fine and charges. Overtime somehow the microusb part that goes in the phone is looser in the phone than before, and i have to angle my phone in way to get it to start charging. The slightest movement causes the charging to stop. I have had this problem with almost every micro usb cable i ever owned ever since I got an htc thunderbolt and the problem continues now with my s3.

One thing to keep in mind also is that most, if not all, USB cables aren't shielded so the longer they are they degrade the transfer speeds etc. I don't think it would make a difference for charging, but to transfer data a shorter higher quality cable would be your best bet. I don't know if the degradation would be noticeable tho...

When you say the transfer started and then froze, I would have to ask what ROM you're running. If it's TW or TW-based, I'd be much more willing to blame the software than the cable. Using Samsung's MTP interface, I have had plenty of large file transfers crap out using both high and low quality cables.
Either way, this test is hardly complete. Obviously somethings wrong with the Ebay cable, but for the other tests, you need to run them more than once. To give any statistical significance to the data, the tests have to be run a bunch of times. Otherwise it is (as far as you know) just luck.
Also, as others have said, I think the primary differences between cheap and "quality" usb cables are
Amperage (which is mostly due to the charger, not the cable, but generally you want a cable that can handle it)
Quality of the connector (cheap cables generally have flimsy connectors)
Quality of construction/Durability (may work fine, but die after a month or two).
I don't think data transfer is something that is really impacted much by the quality of the cable (until you hit that point where the cheap cable just stops working). Getting back to my earlier point about the limited testing, I think if you ran the same test a whole bunch of times (like 100 times for each file on each cable), you'd find that as long as the cable actually works (which seems to exclude the ebay one), they'd probably perform about the same on average.

Battery suddenly dead on both dock and tablet

Until yesterday, my TF700 was working perfectly fine, but now I'm concerned as the battery in both the dock and the tablet have stopped working.
The AC adaptor's connected to the dock and I always charged both the tablet and the dock together for the most part.
I went to check the device this morning and suddenly found that they're not working at all.
Yesterday evening, I tried switching on the tablet and it would switch on and reach the ASUS screen, but not fully boot up.
I bought it from Amazon's Amazon Warehouse division and I have until the 31st to return this, but in the meantime, I'd like to know why the batteries have died on me suddenly and is there anything I can do about it.

If it's a genuine hardware failure, you'd have to return -- unless you're very proficient at handling and replacing sensitive electronics yourself (microwelding, for example).
It has been reported before, and could be fixe din almost every case by letting the 700 be dead for at least an hour, and then let it fully charge while off (!) -- just let it sit hoked up to the wall charger for at least 8 hours. Then try to turn it on again.

It never hurts trying -- you aren't exactly the first to describe this, but luckily, pretty much all of the others were saved.

I finally managed to get the problem sorted out as it seems that the connection to the port on the keyboard had somehow come a bit loose without me noticing it.
Unfortunately, I have a new problem in that the cable itself seems to have died in that it won't work any more with the adapter as it started crackling a bit when I knocked the connector attached to the AC adaptor itself gently by accident. :crying:

Well, I hope I am right in assuming this is not your luckiest week, huh? Is the cable damaged near the wall charging part? (That's what I understand.) The replacement cables probably are not that expensive, so I'd plonk down on a new one instead of initiating "daredevil repair mode".
Saying that gives me that MacGyver feeling. Duct tape and a pair of scissors would be all that he needs to fix this.
Oh, and maybe a pair of toothpicks and an old sock, just for looks.

The cable itself is fine (it's not worn down to the wire literally like a lot of cables and AC adapters you get for devices like iPods and Galaxy S II's), it's just that it has this weird burnt-like smell at the end connector that plus into the USB socket on the AC adaptor.
As for replacement cables, I'm surprised that they're not that easy to buy offline.

Agreed -- buying them offline is a definite hassle. I have seen them online, though, and you can even hunt down the charger parts or the TF101 and TF201 Prime. They will work flawlessly.
BTW and FWIW (gotta love acronyms), my charging cable smells a bit funny at the end too. This specific one has to put through a lot of power, so I'm not even that surprised.

In all seriousness though, I love my TF700, it's just a shame that it's such a pain in the ass (not literally!) to buy official accessories in the shops and it's not as if you can buy a USB cable for it in the shops unlike ones for the iPod, iPad and iPhone.

No, it's a definite PITA
-- I had hoped that the new EU rulings concerning all smartphones needing to provide a microUSB charging input would extend to tablts, but so far this has not been the case, unfortunately.

Just giving you guys a update concerning my device: It seems now that both batteries don't want to work any more for some reason or other as of yesterday. I've checked both the official USB cable and a third-party cable plugged into the official USB plug and they're not charging up the device at all.
The tablet can connect to my laptop as a media device without any problems, but I'm confused as to why it's not working at all when plugged into a USB adapter.
In any case, I'm going to order a AC adapter from eBay later today and see if that works or not.

Very strange charging problem!

Ok, first a little background on this issue...
After having my S3 for about 13-14 months I started having charging issues. The charging port was very "loose" and I had to make sure my charger cable was in just right to get my phone to charge. This was annoying, however was out of warranty and didn't want to pay vzw for an insurance claim. This got worse, and eventually I noticed my phone would only charge with 1 specific usb cable, 1 specific wall charger, and 1 specific car charger.
Well, I finally called Samsung and explained the situation to them and they had me chip my phone to them and they would repair it, free of charge. When they had it, they replaced the charging port, the headphone jack, and the screen. I received the phone back after couple weeks, super excited, and immediately charged it up with the cable I had next to my bed. New charging port felt perfect, nice snug fit, etc... Well, after a few days i hooked it up with the original usb cable that came with the phone, nothing happened. So i started messing around and realized that the only usb cables that will charge my phone are Motorola brand cables! At least the 2 cables I have work, and not a single other cable I've tried works! This includes stock Samsung cable, many cheap 3rd party cables, other friend's S3 cables, none work. Also, I have this cheap car charger that is the type you plug a USB cable into that works, however any other car charger I've tried does not work either.
Also, when i say the cables won't charge my phone, it also won't connect the phone to a PC. They do absolutely nothing.
Does anyone have ANY idea why this is happening?!?! It was an issue before Samsung repaired my phone, they replaced the charging port, but I still have this issue!! I can send it back to Samsung for them to look at it again, however my backup phone, a Razr Maxx, just died also. Seems like the battery went dead and now I can't get it to charge, but that's another issue.
So, any ideas?!

What rom/kernal

It doesn't matter. It does this when it is totally stock and rooted. Right now I'm not rooted or anything because it looks like it may be going back to Samsung again.

I think the smart charging circuit may be messed up

Really? How would that cause the phone to not work with any cable except a certain brand?? I'm just really curious and this is driving me insane!!

I would say you are putting mechanical stress on the charging port. This could be from some misaligned or mis-made cable or somehow pressing or pulling the charge cable when its connected. I've never seen this reported by anyone else, but the mechanical connections are not indestructible. If it were a common symptom with 100 million S3s having been sold, there would be a firestorm of complaints.

I have a similar issue. I'm not sure if it's the device or the ROM (CM nightlies).
Certain cables force the screen to turn back on, which means I get negative charge because the screen burns more than the charger is capable of supplying. Other cables are fine. I'm still looking for the pattern, it's super annoying and causes me to have to turn my phone off completely at times so as not to lose my battery altogether. I'm still trying to solve this, any help would be appreciated.

Further info- it's not the cable, it's the converter at the end. I think it has to do with amperage of the charger- if I use the stock samsung one I'm good, it's putting out 1.0A. If I use others that are fewer amps (like 700 mA) it's unpredictable. I suspect a kernel thing, I might download different kernels to play with it.

Always use chargers that is 1 A - 2A the circuit controls most of the charging regulating amps and voltage

Yes, I agree about using good chargers, but my phone wasn't always this way. It used to charge with anything, but no longer.
I enabled fast charge on Imosyen's lean kernel. That might have made a difference, but I'm not positive yet.

I'm driving down the road in my truck today. I start smelling something burning. I look around to see what it is. The USB cable melted in half. Took some of the charging port with it.
Almost all the pins are exposed. It still charges but I'm not sure for how long.
What should I do?
I guess I'm going to send it in to get fixed. The phones may be a month old. I've used that charging adapter plenty of times and never had a problem.
What's the type C cable just bad?

Although USB-C is a more convenient standard, it's also extremely finicky if you use cheap cables. If the cable burned out then chances are there was more current going through it than it could handle.
A good read about USB-C:

I don't get why they don't just publish a set of certification rules for USB Type-C already, or stop companies from using USB Type-C if it's still in the development stage.

I guess I'm going to send it in to get fixed. The phones may be a month old. I've used that charging adapter plenty of times and never had a problem.

It's probably because voltage via lighter adapter is much different
