Solution to LauncherPro Redraws on GB - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

Hey everybody,
My LauncherPro keeps redrawing (home screen reloads everything) after I use an app for like, 30 seconds. This only started happening since I made the change to GB. I can't really speak for the other launchers, because they lag for me (I have 7 home screens that are quite packed).
Anyways, I did some searching last night, so if anyone else has this problem, this seems to be the solution. Set your "Memory Usage Preset" to HIGH. Menu > Preferences > Advanced Settings > Memory Usage Settings > Memory Usage Preset > High. I also have "Prevent Force-Closes" checked, but I'm not sure if that makes or breaks anything (since I had that checked before too).
Also, keeping the launcher in memory doesn't do anything. It keeps doing it. I've been running it like this since last night, and I haven't had any redraws. I don't know if this setting causes harm, but I'm happy that LauncherPro doesn't redraw anymore.
So, in case if anyone has been having a redrawing problem with LauncherPro (maybe the other launchers too), this thread was just to let people know of a fix. I hope I helped!
EDIT: This is NOT a permanent fix for your redrawing. However, this definitely seems to prolong the time it takes for your launcher to redraw. I used to be unable to go for 30 seconds in an app without my launcher redrawing. Now I can do it within minutes.

i seem to have the redraw problem on every launcher i use in GB, but I will try this out with LP. i'll let you know how it works for me.

This is due to a ram script you have in init.d. The ram settings aren't really optimal for this phone from what i've noticed. I used to get that a lot too regardless of ROM. I removed it and rebooted and voila! No more launcher reloads. It won't even reload after having a bunch of tabs open in dolphin or something else that consumes a moderate amount of ram.

It was weird that I only really got it with GB ROMs. Froyo ROMs were perfectly fine for me.
Wouldn't removing the init.d script make your phone slower?

Giving this a shot until we find out what script FB is talking about... Thanks, man! This has been driving me NUTS
---------- Post added at 01:53 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:29 AM ----------
Went into /etc/init.d and opened up 06tweaks. I commented out the following lines:
echo "TWEAKS: Memory tweaks ";
sysctl -W vm.oom_kill_allocating_task=0
sysctl -W vm.vfs_cache_pressure=10
(now they look like:
# echo "TWEAKS: Memory tweaks ";
# sysctl -W vm.oom_kill_allocating_task=0
# sysctl -W vm.vfs_cache_pressure=10
)
Haven't seen my launcher reload, yet.. Several YouTube videos, many Dolphin HD tabs, Facebook, and even MoboPlayer, and no reloads

Unfortunately, after playing games on my phone for a while (a few minutes), my launcher redraws. This technically isn't a fix, but it DEFINITELY prolonged the time before everything redraws.
I'll update the OP with this.
@Jay Aristide: Valhalla v1.1 doesn't seem to have 06tweaks.

I deleted the file so I can't remember which one it is. Someone who isn't afraid of the terminal try this for me
Code:
tar czvf /sdcard/init.tar.gz -C /etc/init.d/ .
It'll create a file called init.tar.gz in the root of your sd card. Just upload that file here so I can take a look at it.
EDIT
Don't forget that period at the end of the command!

There is another thing that you can do if your launcher reloads too often.
Edit build.prop (in /system) and add line:
ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=1
This will put the Home app to the same class as Visible app so it will not be unloaded from memory that much. Visible app is not the same as Foreground app (foreground class is 0) so it still can be unloaded sometimes if memory is really needed. Default for this is 4.

Fresh Toast with AutoKiller?

What do you guys think? Should we still use AutoKiller with Fresh Toast? I've tried it with installed and without and can't see much of a difference. Is there any pros/cons? If you do like it, what do you think is the best settings for very stable settings with good battery life? Speed is not the most important if it kills my battery.
I do not personally like Autokiller.
Gave me alot of browser closes, and seemed to kill apps that I didnt want killed at the time.
Im much better off with the compcache, and just using my taks killer (ATK) as needed. With the overclocking and JIT, my performance issues are slim to none.
So you use ATK, but not automatically? Ive read all articles that say not to use a task killer, but I was using Quick Sytem Info and saw that my memory was down to 30mb and I was very laggy. I used the task killer built in and it would speed everything up. I just don't like the idea of a task killer always working. Any other input?
Yeah, I just set up the widget on my home screen.
There are certain apps I put on the ignore list, just a few though.
I don't believe that killing apps and then making them re-open is a big battery drain. Or if it is, Id rather have a slightly higher energy consumption than my phone run like crap all the time.
I mean just on boot, there are <15 apps open... doing nothing. After a fresh boot my avaialble memory drops to >40MB. After a good kill, Im back into the 70s.
The only thing I have on my ignore list are things like "KeepScreen", Music player (mixzing), pandora, SetCPU, and ShaketoWake(my alarm clock)
everything else gets killed.
Like... after browsing the web for a while, I like to kill the browser because its a HUGE memory hog. Yes it takes an additional 3 seconds to open the browser when I use it... say... 2-3 hours later but that's not a big deal to me. The increased performance and no lag when I send a text message is.
Make sense? Sorry, I'm on pain killers right now so I'm a bit loopy haha.

Problems with LauncherPro Plus

Hello guys,
I'm using LauncherPro Plus since a long time now, but since a few days I have some problems with it.
Today I had a lot of FCs in the morning, fixed that (almost) with new memory usage settings.
And very often I get the "Problem while loading widget" error, which is quite annoying. I have to restart LauncherPro or delete the widget and place it again. The new memory usage settings did make it much better, but the problem still exists.
I even had FCs with 102MB free RAM, so it isn't RAM related.
My dalvik heapsize is 26MB, wasn't better with 32MB...
My memory usage settings are:
Memory usage preset:
Medium
Only clicked "Use homescreen caches" on the page
Homescreen cache type: Compressed
Other settings:
Elastic scrolling on, 3D drawer on
My screen configuration:
Can someone help me to fix these things?
Thanks
Fwiw compressed cache caused me bad lag issues the last time I used LPP.
Compressing or decompressing anything will need system resources.
Might be worth a shot.

Since yesterday evening it's stable again, but before I could use normal instead of compressed.
I have to use compressed, otherwise it gets unstable and I get the "problem loading widget" thing again
But even with my settings it's very smooth.

I loved LauncherPro and was with it since day one on my phone, but recently it gave me almost the same problems that you have and i tested few other launchers (wich was a bit of a hasle 'cause most of them are crap). I'm currently with GO Launcher Ex and i can confirm it's the ONLY ONE whos been able to keep up with the outstanding performance of LauncherPro.

[Q] Supercharger script experiences with Nexus S

Hello,
Does anyone with a Nexus S have experience with running the Supercharger script here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991276
I was hoping to share experiences here and try to find the best settings that work for everyone. I just tried it for the first time today and am currently using the "512hp Unledded" settings, will report back with results after I've had a chance to use the phone for a while.
In the meantime, if anyone is using this script, please do share your experience here.
Thanks!
I've used settings 6 and 9. Tbh I don't noticeuch of a difference with or without it. A solid kernel does alot of what the script does. And I can lock the launcher through cm7. Did however make a substantial difference on my epics available ram.

I've been running ZuluZulu 1.3.1 (it's pretty old but still works great typically) with Trinity's TEUV kernel at 800MHz and I CONSTANTLY get launcher redraws. I'm hoping this script can fix the problem. Maybe it's just a placebo effect, but I feel like my phone is a tiny bit snappier.
I have noticed that free RAM went from typically 70-75MB free at all times before the script to now about 80-85MB free at all times. I've switched to 512hp balanced settings since 1000hp aggressive was killing all my apps too quickly - messaging and exchange email, both of which i use constantly, were always getting killed so I dialed it back to 512hp balanced for now.
Thanks.
My available ram without it currently is usually 120 to 150, I'm on newest cm7 nightly. Perhaps you have alot more going on on your phone then I do, but you may want to try out a different rom perhaps, and see if you benefit. I'm using tuv10, and my redraws are minimal, don't have launcher locked atm.

Been running 512hp unledded (balanced) setting for close to a day now, I'm happy to report that my launcher redraws are 100% gone! Not a single one yet!
EDIT: Btw I'm running GO launcher and i have unchecked the "keep home in memory" options as the script suggested. It's working great so far.

Yeah I have too many apps that are running services all the time, it's kind of annoying.. I may give TUV10 a try too, although i'm digging the battery savings from teuv and ezekeel's deep sleep.
It may be time to go back to CM as well.
Newest tuv betas have deep idle also

I'm interested by this. Currently using juwe11 ram optimization that's with NScollab but I get redraws all the time. Using GOlauncher too. Might turn juwe's stuff off and try that, although I've tried in the past and it didn't change s***...

On the GO launcher home screen, go to Menu - Preferences - Advanced Settings and then uncheck "System Persistent" and "Prevent Force Close".
Then run this script and pick the 512hp balanced setting, save and exit.
Boom, launcher redraws gone

Is that really NO redraw? I'm close to no redraw, but let's say I play a game for a while and exit i'll get a 5ish seconds redraw. Same if I surf the web using Dolphin for a while and I play a flash game in it. :/
Edit: The script changed and I don't have the same options as before. What are the values next to the option you're using? :/

I have been TRYING to get it redraw to see where it breaks, but it just won't do it I open up a few apps and hit home quickly, this usually used to make the launcher redraw, but it won't do it anymore.
On the script - just pick the 512hp balanced - i don't remember the settings exactly, but amongst the ones I've tested, this one is working pretty good for stability and multitasking.

That's the thing, the one I got from the thread, update 8, doesn't have those same options anymore.
I'm using #6 512 HP ledded and #12 hard to kill. Working great so far only redraw I had is when I was moving an app from SD to phone and backed out of the menu quickly while it was in the middle of moving. Very impressed so far.
Now trying #5,#13

[Q] Stock launcher frequently crashes

Hey guys,
I'm not exactly sure on how I should look this up, so I'm sorry if this isn't new.
It's been a while now, actually, nearly since I got the NS, or since I loaded it with apps. I'm running stock everything, 4.1.1.
My problem is: I get frequent crashes of my (stock) launcher, when using an app and tap on the home button. It's more noticeable on a screen that has widgets, because they take a while to appear and to load the content again. But no error windows, just like if the process shuts down when I'm using an app.
I'm almost sure it's a memory management problem, in fact, I don't even know how NS runs JB so well. In this case, I guess there isn't much to do.
Is this a frequent issue? Do you recommend anything? Any alternative launcher that performs as well as the stock and consumes less ram? Any settings that would improve the memory management?
Thanks in advance,

That's not a crash. It's commonly referred as launcher redraw, and it happens when the launcher is released from the RAM because the RAM is needed for something else. Happens somewhat often with Jellybean on the Nexus S because its meager 512MB of RAM has a hard time coping with user apps + system apps running in the background. Other than making sure as little apps as possible run in the background, there's not much to do.
Most alternative launchers will consume more RAM, so that's not really a solution in itself.

[Q] Nova Launcher Redraws

Hey guys, I'm having a problem with Nova Launcher. Almost every time I return to the home screen, Nova takes about 5 seconds to redraw all of the apps. I know 5 seconds may not seem like much, but trust me it is. I only have folders and 2 widgets on my homescreen. I'm also trying to get rid of apps but I'm still having the problem. I've tried using aggressive desktop and locking it in memory through the build prop, but it's not working. Any advice?
FIX: Install Performance Control from XDA, set minfree taskkiler to medium, and bye bye ram problems. I've had zero problems since.
that is very unusual. power down ur phone and restart
or
delete nova launcher and then load it again from play store
I'm having these slow redraws, with any launcher (Google launcher, nova, tsf...).
I want to know a solution too this too. It's very annoying.
Sent from my XT1033 using XDA Free mobile app
5 seconds sounds too much but there is nothing you can do about these redraws except for maybe trying a new launcher. Every android phone with 1 GB ram is going to experience constant redraws if you are a heavy user. That's just sad but hey we got a budget phone after all and at least it doesn't lag within apps.
Sent from my XT1032 using Tapatalk
Go to nova settings. Advanced settings and enable Aggressive Desktop. I just found the option while I was annoyed with redraws too.
Guys Idk if it could be something else, but I rebooted my phone and nova seems to be behaving well now. Maybe you guys should reboot your phones every now and then to increase performance.
Edit: I may have spoken too soon. It seems that heavy resource apps like chrome and Facebook still cause redraws when exiting :/
I solved this problem using this tip: http://www.keanei.eu/2011/07/19/prevent-home-screen-replacement-launchers-from-constant-redraws/
