Hello guys,
I'm using LauncherPro Plus since a long time now, but since a few days I have some problems with it.
Today I had a lot of FCs in the morning, fixed that (almost) with new memory usage settings.
And very often I get the "Problem while loading widget" error, which is quite annoying. I have to restart LauncherPro or delete the widget and place it again. The new memory usage settings did make it much better, but the problem still exists.
I even had FCs with 102MB free RAM, so it isn't RAM related.
My dalvik heapsize is 26MB, wasn't better with 32MB...
My memory usage settings are:
Memory usage preset:
Medium
Only clicked "Use homescreen caches" on the page
Homescreen cache type: Compressed
Other settings:
Elastic scrolling on, 3D drawer on
My screen configuration:
Can someone help me to fix these things?
Thanks
Fwiw compressed cache caused me bad lag issues the last time I used LPP.
Compressing or decompressing anything will need system resources.
Might be worth a shot.

Since yesterday evening it's stable again, but before I could use normal instead of compressed.
I have to use compressed, otherwise it gets unstable and I get the "problem loading widget" thing again
But even with my settings it's very smooth.

I loved LauncherPro and was with it since day one on my phone, but recently it gave me almost the same problems that you have and i tested few other launchers (wich was a bit of a hasle 'cause most of them are crap). I'm currently with GO Launcher Ex and i can confirm it's the ONLY ONE whos been able to keep up with the outstanding performance of LauncherPro.

Is there anything you can do to reduce the lag in getting back to the home screen after closing an application? I've recently upgraded to the CBW 2.2. I've also just loaded adw launcher. It takes 8-10 seconds for the home screen to be functional.

Wow! 8 seconds is steep. All dexter based froyo's have a few problems. Although I dont use it anymore I remember what id do to tweak the whole ROM.
1) Use launcher pro, its lighter and faster than ADW. I also like its effects. Theres a setting in it called keep in memory which stops the launcher from being killed by android so there are less redraws of your app drawer.
2) CB froyo and dexters have memory management problems and slowly with use the memory goes down significantly. Download an app called Autokiller memory optimizer from the market and set it at the strict preset. It basically modifies androids native memory management and allow more memory to be free.
3) Use milestone overclock and set it to 850 mhz 56 Vsel.
Step 2 and 3 are assuming you are rooted at the moment. These worked for me really well when I used the ROM and I had no problems at all.
I uninstalled adw and things seemed snapper. I also installed the suggested memory manager. I had already been playing around with the milestone overclocker and its set to 850/56. When I run setcpu should it say 850? I have it set to 850max 250min.
Even set this way the lag remains when returning to the home screen.

Well thats odd, with similar settings id have a very decent experience. One thing though, do you use many widgets on your homescreen? And does this lag occur when you press the home button from within an app or when you close the app. One thing you could try is setting up a swap partion on your sd card. That always speeds everything up. If you dont know how I can direct you to where you can learn how to do that. Also how did you upgrade to 2.2 CB?
hi try the go luncher i think its the best launcher.

It's slow whether I'm switching to home using the home button or escaping there.
If I've set milestone overclock to 850 mhz and vsel to 56 should setcpu show 850? It shows 720.

I'm not going to load any launchers until it's running like it should.

Try installing Autokiller Memory Optimizer from the market and selecting the Optimum memory profile. That used to work for me when I was running that ROM.
I've found lots of launchers to have lots of lag returning to homescreen on both androids I have had and it's a common issue with android launchers. The only launcher I have that doesn't redraw homescreen every time is SPB shell (but it still has to re-load every now and then). You can try using a launcher like Zeam, launcherpro, or golauncher, nemus launcher as those ones didn't redraw as often as others for me. And if the option is available in a launcher (it is in ADW, launcherpro and Go) select "Keep in Memory" and it might help somewhat.
My XT720 has always lagged when returning to the home screen. I only recently loaded a launcher after hearing reverendkjr talk about liking adw. I only kept adw loaded for a day. Its not installed anymore.
I thought upgrading to 2.2 would end the lag but it wasn't to be.
I've loaded autokiller and set it to strict. I still have times when it takes 8 seconds or so for the home screen to be functional. I do have a 4x2 clock / weather widget on the home screen. I've tried with and without that widget and still have bouts of lag. Maybe I'm expecting much.

Yeah, seems a problem with pretty much all launchers. Stock MIUI launcher and SPB Shell have been the only exceptions for me really. Even Zeam has done its reloading often.

Dude, this almost sounds like a hardware issue or something. How's the rest of the phone? Like when you open apps or browse web pages. Honestly i've used every froyo build and ive never had it that bad. Sluggish for me would be a second or two nothing more than that. Like in my previous comment if you're upto it you could try setting up a swap partition as a final test. After that maybe you need to reflash an sbf and go through the upgrade process from scratch. That always fixes things.

Yeah, when I had reloads it was generally not that long. If I had a lot of widgets out it might take longer to load up but I don't recall it really being 8 seconds or so...
Hey hows spb on miui? I can't seem to find it on market. How do I get it? Is it smooth like go or launcherpro

I do have some weirdness when the battery goes dead. The phone has problems seeing the sdcard after I charge. That happens occasionally but other than that no major problems.

SPB is buttery smooth. Amazing launcher - check out reviews for it online (there are a bunch). However, currently it only runs well for me on either MIUI or 2.1 (on Dexter or WanHu ROMs it has issues). And while it doesn't reload every time like other launchers, it does have to load itself up once in a while when things run out of memory (it's pretty memory intensive I think). They really need to provide it with an update already though (more widgets + features + performance improvements should come sometime, but I don't know when...).
For some reason SPB won't show up in the market on MIUI (there were a bunch of missing apps for me). I emailed SPB support about it and they gave me a copy of one from their website to install as an apk and it worked perfectly. I did already own SPB from android market. You can go to their site and buy the apk directly if you want. It is more expensive than most apps, so you may want to wait until they do that long expected update before diving in. Still, it's a fantastic launcher.
Hey everybody,
My LauncherPro keeps redrawing (home screen reloads everything) after I use an app for like, 30 seconds. This only started happening since I made the change to GB. I can't really speak for the other launchers, because they lag for me (I have 7 home screens that are quite packed).
Anyways, I did some searching last night, so if anyone else has this problem, this seems to be the solution. Set your "Memory Usage Preset" to HIGH. Menu > Preferences > Advanced Settings > Memory Usage Settings > Memory Usage Preset > High. I also have "Prevent Force-Closes" checked, but I'm not sure if that makes or breaks anything (since I had that checked before too).
Also, keeping the launcher in memory doesn't do anything. It keeps doing it. I've been running it like this since last night, and I haven't had any redraws. I don't know if this setting causes harm, but I'm happy that LauncherPro doesn't redraw anymore.
So, in case if anyone has been having a redrawing problem with LauncherPro (maybe the other launchers too), this thread was just to let people know of a fix. I hope I helped!
EDIT: This is NOT a permanent fix for your redrawing. However, this definitely seems to prolong the time it takes for your launcher to redraw. I used to be unable to go for 30 seconds in an app without my launcher redrawing. Now I can do it within minutes.
i seem to have the redraw problem on every launcher i use in GB, but I will try this out with LP. i'll let you know how it works for me.
This is due to a ram script you have in init.d. The ram settings aren't really optimal for this phone from what i've noticed. I used to get that a lot too regardless of ROM. I removed it and rebooted and voila! No more launcher reloads. It won't even reload after having a bunch of tabs open in dolphin or something else that consumes a moderate amount of ram.

It was weird that I only really got it with GB ROMs. Froyo ROMs were perfectly fine for me.
Wouldn't removing the init.d script make your phone slower?

Went into /etc/init.d and opened up 06tweaks. I commented out the following lines:
echo "TWEAKS: Memory tweaks ";
sysctl -W vm.oom_kill_allocating_task=0
sysctl -W vm.vfs_cache_pressure=10
(now they look like:
# echo "TWEAKS: Memory tweaks ";
# sysctl -W vm.oom_kill_allocating_task=0
# sysctl -W vm.vfs_cache_pressure=10
)
Haven't seen my launcher reload, yet.. Several YouTube videos, many Dolphin HD tabs, Facebook, and even MoboPlayer, and no reloads
Unfortunately, after playing games on my phone for a while (a few minutes), my launcher redraws. This technically isn't a fix, but it DEFINITELY prolonged the time before everything redraws.
I'll update the OP with this.
@Jay Aristide: Valhalla v1.1 doesn't seem to have 06tweaks.
I deleted the file so I can't remember which one it is. Someone who isn't afraid of the terminal try this for me
Code:
tar czvf /sdcard/init.tar.gz -C /etc/init.d/ .
It'll create a file called init.tar.gz in the root of your sd card. Just upload that file here so I can take a look at it.
EDIT
Don't forget that period at the end of the command!
There is another thing that you can do if your launcher reloads too often.
Edit build.prop (in /system) and add line:
ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=1
This will put the Home app to the same class as Visible app so it will not be unloaded from memory that much. Visible app is not the same as Foreground app (foreground class is 0) so it still can be unloaded sometimes if memory is really needed. Default for this is 4.
anyone else have this where every so often, maybe 1 out of 10 times, when i hit home from an app or something, i get the MyTouch logo for like 2 seconds and then a little notification box that says Loading... for probably 3 or 4 seconds, before the home screen comes up? just thought it was weird since most of the time it doesn't have to load to get to the home screen.
thanks
I use to get that all the time, when i changed my launcher it stopped doing that, this makes me believe that its a bug

Do you use a task killer?
If so that's why.
This is caused by Android not being ready to show your homescreen, so either you were using a very resource intensive app, have a couple resource heavy apps running, an app is coded poorly, or you are using a task killer and screwed up the data for some of your apps.
What version of what are you running? That may help pinpoint your problem.
Sent from my Bulletproof_Doubleshot using xda premium
no task killers, i hate those, they do more harm than good although the phone comes with a task killer of its own in the quick settings i dont use it. i dont really put apps in the background, im always trying to save memory when i can so i completely close every app when im finish with it mostly happens when exiting from dolphin hd. Also all my apps are on the latest version and so is my os.
my old g2 couldn't survive without a taskkillers. not gonna get into the whole taskkiller vs no taskkiller debate. i've read all the articles and it simply wasn't true for me. they helped alot.
that being said though i have no taskkiller. and i'm not using any custom launcher and i'm not rooted. just using a stock mytouch4g. i have a few widgets loaded of course. like 5 i think total, most of which are stock sense widgets (the clock/weather one, the photo gallery one).
Hey guys,
I'm not exactly sure on how I should look this up, so I'm sorry if this isn't new.
It's been a while now, actually, nearly since I got the NS, or since I loaded it with apps. I'm running stock everything, 4.1.1.
My problem is: I get frequent crashes of my (stock) launcher, when using an app and tap on the home button. It's more noticeable on a screen that has widgets, because they take a while to appear and to load the content again. But no error windows, just like if the process shuts down when I'm using an app.
I'm almost sure it's a memory management problem, in fact, I don't even know how NS runs JB so well. In this case, I guess there isn't much to do.
Is this a frequent issue? Do you recommend anything? Any alternative launcher that performs as well as the stock and consumes less ram? Any settings that would improve the memory management?
Thanks in advance,

That's not a crash. It's commonly referred as launcher redraw, and it happens when the launcher is released from the RAM because the RAM is needed for something else. Happens somewhat often with Jellybean on the Nexus S because its meager 512MB of RAM has a hard time coping with user apps + system apps running in the background. Other than making sure as little apps as possible run in the background, there's not much to do.
Most alternative launchers will consume more RAM, so that's not really a solution in itself.
Hey guys, I'm having a problem with Nova Launcher. Almost every time I return to the home screen, Nova takes about 5 seconds to redraw all of the apps. I know 5 seconds may not seem like much, but trust me it is. I only have folders and 2 widgets on my homescreen. I'm also trying to get rid of apps but I'm still having the problem. I've tried using aggressive desktop and locking it in memory through the build prop, but it's not working. Any advice?
FIX: Install Performance Control from XDA, set minfree taskkiler to medium, and bye bye ram problems. I've had zero problems since.
that is very unusual. power down ur phone and restart
or
delete nova launcher and then load it again from play store
I'm having these slow redraws, with any launcher (Google launcher, nova, tsf...).
I want to know a solution too this too. It's very annoying.

5 seconds sounds too much but there is nothing you can do about these redraws except for maybe trying a new launcher. Every android phone with 1 GB ram is going to experience constant redraws if you are a heavy user. That's just sad but hey we got a budget phone after all and at least it doesn't lag within apps.
Sent from my XT1032 using Tapatalk
Go to nova settings. Advanced settings and enable Aggressive Desktop. I just found the option while I was annoyed with redraws too.
Guys Idk if it could be something else, but I rebooted my phone and nova seems to be behaving well now. Maybe you guys should reboot your phones every now and then to increase performance.
Edit: I may have spoken too soon. It seems that heavy resource apps like chrome and Facebook still cause redraws when exiting :/
I solved this problem using this tip: http://www.keanei.eu/2011/07/19/prevent-home-screen-replacement-launchers-from-constant-redraws/
