Is there anything you can do to reduce the lag in getting back to the home screen after closing an application? I've recently upgraded to the CBW 2.2. I've also just loaded adw launcher. It takes 8-10 seconds for the home screen to be functional.

Wow! 8 seconds is steep. All dexter based froyo's have a few problems. Although I dont use it anymore I remember what id do to tweak the whole ROM.
1) Use launcher pro, its lighter and faster than ADW. I also like its effects. Theres a setting in it called keep in memory which stops the launcher from being killed by android so there are less redraws of your app drawer.
2) CB froyo and dexters have memory management problems and slowly with use the memory goes down significantly. Download an app called Autokiller memory optimizer from the market and set it at the strict preset. It basically modifies androids native memory management and allow more memory to be free.
3) Use milestone overclock and set it to 850 mhz 56 Vsel.
Step 2 and 3 are assuming you are rooted at the moment. These worked for me really well when I used the ROM and I had no problems at all.
I uninstalled adw and things seemed snapper. I also installed the suggested memory manager. I had already been playing around with the milestone overclocker and its set to 850/56. When I run setcpu should it say 850? I have it set to 850max 250min.
Even set this way the lag remains when returning to the home screen.

Well thats odd, with similar settings id have a very decent experience. One thing though, do you use many widgets on your homescreen? And does this lag occur when you press the home button from within an app or when you close the app. One thing you could try is setting up a swap partion on your sd card. That always speeds everything up. If you dont know how I can direct you to where you can learn how to do that. Also how did you upgrade to 2.2 CB?
hi try the go luncher i think its the best launcher.

It's slow whether I'm switching to home using the home button or escaping there.
If I've set milestone overclock to 850 mhz and vsel to 56 should setcpu show 850? It shows 720.

Try installing Autokiller Memory Optimizer from the market and selecting the Optimum memory profile. That used to work for me when I was running that ROM.
I've found lots of launchers to have lots of lag returning to homescreen on both androids I have had and it's a common issue with android launchers. The only launcher I have that doesn't redraw homescreen every time is SPB shell (but it still has to re-load every now and then). You can try using a launcher like Zeam, launcherpro, or golauncher, nemus launcher as those ones didn't redraw as often as others for me. And if the option is available in a launcher (it is in ADW, launcherpro and Go) select "Keep in Memory" and it might help somewhat.
My XT720 has always lagged when returning to the home screen. I only recently loaded a launcher after hearing reverendkjr talk about liking adw. I only kept adw loaded for a day. Its not installed anymore.
I thought upgrading to 2.2 would end the lag but it wasn't to be.
I've loaded autokiller and set it to strict. I still have times when it takes 8 seconds or so for the home screen to be functional. I do have a 4x2 clock / weather widget on the home screen. I've tried with and without that widget and still have bouts of lag. Maybe I'm expecting much.

Yeah, seems a problem with pretty much all launchers. Stock MIUI launcher and SPB Shell have been the only exceptions for me really. Even Zeam has done its reloading often.

Dude, this almost sounds like a hardware issue or something. How's the rest of the phone? Like when you open apps or browse web pages. Honestly i've used every froyo build and ive never had it that bad. Sluggish for me would be a second or two nothing more than that. Like in my previous comment if you're upto it you could try setting up a swap partition as a final test. After that maybe you need to reflash an sbf and go through the upgrade process from scratch. That always fixes things.

Yeah, when I had reloads it was generally not that long. If I had a lot of widgets out it might take longer to load up but I don't recall it really being 8 seconds or so...

SPB is buttery smooth. Amazing launcher - check out reviews for it online (there are a bunch). However, currently it only runs well for me on either MIUI or 2.1 (on Dexter or WanHu ROMs it has issues). And while it doesn't reload every time like other launchers, it does have to load itself up once in a while when things run out of memory (it's pretty memory intensive I think). They really need to provide it with an update already though (more widgets + features + performance improvements should come sometime, but I don't know when...).
For some reason SPB won't show up in the market on MIUI (there were a bunch of missing apps for me). I emailed SPB support about it and they gave me a copy of one from their website to install as an apk and it worked perfectly. I did already own SPB from android market. You can go to their site and buy the apk directly if you want. It is more expensive than most apps, so you may want to wait until they do that long expected update before diving in. Still, it's a fantastic launcher.

Hi guys,
Been using ADW for a while now and really like it, but recently getting more and more force closes. Can anyone else recommend a good one? I tried panda but that seemed to slow my phone down a lot. Thanks to anyone who can help
HelixLauncher or Zeam Launcher is good.
got them both installed now. Zeam seems really fast. Can our x10 only take up to 1.5.1? Thats all I could find to download
What version of ADW did you have? I'm using 1.0.1 I haven't had a single force close with it, and I can't say any other home replacement is even close to being as good as ADW!
adw has been my favourite and it was 1.0.1 that I had, but it has just started forcing close and i dont know why
Adw look really nice but it does not work well on the x10, horizontsl slide is very sensitive. That means that you pick up icons while sliding the program menu. Fix that and ill replace Zeam.

Glenn, you do know you can change the app drawer back to the vertical scrolling type, right? Reason I ask is because I had the same problem when I first installed adw, and had almost given up on it solely because of that, until someone told me I could do that. It is in the adw settings, under drawer settings I believe. The horizontal slide is the galaxy s style, vertical works much more smoothly on x10
Sent from my X10a using XDA App
I was going to say the same thing. Vertical slide works MUCH better than horizontal slide.
I'm wondering if the force-close issues in ADW are anything to do with the themes. I love the concept of themes but I'm tempted to disable them in case the size of the graphical components are causing some kind of bottleneck. Or something. I'm just guessing really, it's only really started playing up since I changed the themes.
I used to use HelixLauncher a lot, and liked it... certainly over the stock... but ADW won me over after I changed the drawer to horizontal, and disabled the "new dock" thing at the bottom, which I never used.
I might go back to Helix because ADW is being a bit odd recently. I wonder if that is what is hassling my poor old Beautiful Widgets...
My adw was getting a bit laggy so i uninstalled and reinstalled it. It's back to being super fast again. i use beautiful widgets and everything is fine.

I've been using ADW for ages, and it's definitely my favourite too...
I'd like to say I've had no issues at all, but recently I've been finding that icons occasionally shift a few pixels to the right - like it's stuck a little way into swiping between screens...
It seems this only happens if I go in and out of a landscape based application (such as the camera) - my fix for this is to enable landscape mode in ADW as well, and I haven't had a problem... So while I don't like or used landscape on the home screen, at least my screens don't get stuck a little skewed...
Note, I only found this to be an issue after I upgraded to the 024 firmware... that, of course, doesn't mean there wasn't an upgrade to ADW too, I just don't remember (given I also wiped my device and re-installed everything)...
Hi All,
I am using following launchers currently:
1.Default
2. ADW
3. Home++
4. LauncherPro
5. NetLifeScreen
6. Windows7 Launcher
And I use Home Switcher to switch between these launchers, I can observe that my phone started lagging, is multiple launchers is the reason?
I am using task killer and cant see the other launcher running??
Also when I reduce the no. of screens to 3, there is no issues what soever!!!
Any suggestions...
Having so many launchers would definitely make the phone run slower.
I suggest you stick to 1-2.
Take a look at ur ram. Mine starts lagging at around 8%.

apart from testing, i cannot think of any reasons to be running more than 2 launchers. this will be consuming resources for sure, especially if you are using switcher to flip between them (this leaves them ALL open, all the time!)
Pick 1 or 2 launchers and remove all the others. u will be surprised how much quicker it is!

I removed all the launchers and tested with my default launcher, it seems AUTO SYNC is causing some lagging issues, when I turned if off all seems Ok.
With AUTO SYNC off, even 4 launchers are working fine, minor lagging issues in LauncherPro (while using Launcher Pro widgets).
My conclusion: Turn Auto Sync Off + Use 3 Launchers at max
Not much to say.. new Launcher seems quite interesting..

you can resize widgets on launcher pro...it just a paid feature, not free on this launcher

you can overlap widgets, fit them, arrange the grid etc, with QQLauncher

This launcher is awesome on my D3, super quick to redraw the home page after closing an app or camera and love the alphabetically sorted app drawer. Give this guys some time and it will be a hit. when I click the contact or phone app on the dock it opens the default samsung phone or contact instead of giving the option of the all the phone apps (go dialer, touchpal dialer etc). any plans to add this?

I've been using Launcher Pro for quite a long time now on my Epic 4G but I've never liked that it seems slow to initialize and at times is just laggy for unknown reasons. So, I switched to QQLauncher Pro 1.4.3 (Build 234). I miss some of the LP icons but overall love how QQLauncher Pro's design is for the setup of each screen, the ability to organize apps into folders, and at least in my case with Android 2.3.4 EH06 installed on my phone, there doesn't seem to be any lagginess to concern me.
However, I have found some quirky bug in that not all icons are rebuilt after a reboot of my phone. Similarly, with all my apps organized into multiple folders, the same 7 apps are found outside their intended folders after a reboot. The only solution is to apply a restore of the launcher settings, although it only corrects the home screens and not the app drawer. For each instance of this corruption, it is always the same apps affected, which is also puzzling since there's nothing they share in common to my knowledge. Most, and perhaps all of them are saved to the memory card to conserve system memory, but there are other apps similarly saved to the memory card that aren't affected, so that does not seem to be the source of the bug.
At this point, I'm not sure if I'll return to Launcher Pro...I have to decide which I think to be the lesser of two evils. QQLauncher really wins a lot of points though for just allowing multiple item selection when building a screen up.
Best launcher so far ...all it needs is an option to switch home screen landscape and more themes
I'd like to push/hold an app from the list-drawer and put it on the desktop, doesn't seem to work atm.
And the lock screen seems to redirect me to the GO SMS Pro app both when using the SMS-unlock and Home-unlock. Anyway to fix this? I'd really like to use the lock screen!
I'm using the latest 2.3 version. Is there any way to disable the task manager/app cleaner(which seems to run automatically)?
Hello,
Does anyone with a Nexus S have experience with running the Supercharger script here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991276
I was hoping to share experiences here and try to find the best settings that work for everyone. I just tried it for the first time today and am currently using the "512hp Unledded" settings, will report back with results after I've had a chance to use the phone for a while.
In the meantime, if anyone is using this script, please do share your experience here.
Thanks!
I've used settings 6 and 9. Tbh I don't noticeuch of a difference with or without it. A solid kernel does alot of what the script does. And I can lock the launcher through cm7. Did however make a substantial difference on my epics available ram.

I've been running ZuluZulu 1.3.1 (it's pretty old but still works great typically) with Trinity's TEUV kernel at 800MHz and I CONSTANTLY get launcher redraws. I'm hoping this script can fix the problem. Maybe it's just a placebo effect, but I feel like my phone is a tiny bit snappier.
I have noticed that free RAM went from typically 70-75MB free at all times before the script to now about 80-85MB free at all times. I've switched to 512hp balanced settings since 1000hp aggressive was killing all my apps too quickly - messaging and exchange email, both of which i use constantly, were always getting killed so I dialed it back to 512hp balanced for now.
Thanks.
My available ram without it currently is usually 120 to 150, I'm on newest cm7 nightly. Perhaps you have alot more going on on your phone then I do, but you may want to try out a different rom perhaps, and see if you benefit. I'm using tuv10, and my redraws are minimal, don't have launcher locked atm.

Do you use a task killer?
If so that's why.
This is caused by Android not being ready to show your homescreen, so either you were using a very resource intensive app, have a couple resource heavy apps running, an app is coded poorly, or you are using a task killer and screwed up the data for some of your apps.
What version of what are you running? That may help pinpoint your problem.
Sent from my Bulletproof_Doubleshot using xda premium
no task killers, i hate those, they do more harm than good although the phone comes with a task killer of its own in the quick settings i dont use it. i dont really put apps in the background, im always trying to save memory when i can so i completely close every app when im finish with it mostly happens when exiting from dolphin hd. Also all my apps are on the latest version and so is my os.
my old g2 couldn't survive without a taskkillers. not gonna get into the whole taskkiller vs no taskkiller debate. i've read all the articles and it simply wasn't true for me. they helped alot.
that being said though i have no taskkiller. and i'm not using any custom launcher and i'm not rooted. just using a stock mytouch4g. i have a few widgets loaded of course. like 5 i think total, most of which are stock sense widgets (the clock/weather one, the photo gallery one).
