[Q] Earbuds launching phone while in music app - General Questions and Answers

I've been having this problem for quite a while now, both on my old HTC EVO and on my new HTC Sensation. While listening through my earbuds (iPhone style, one button) if I double click the button the player (MixZing, but it does the same with the stock music player) skips to the next song as desired, but it also launches the phone and makes a call.
When I insert the earbuds the icon in the notification bar shows the headset icon, not just headphones. It has been suggested elsewhere that the problem lies with the plug being of the 3 segment type, BUT... I've used these same earbuds for a couple of years and didn't have the problem until relatively recently. They worked fine on the EVO for ages. I suspect the issue is specific to Android 2.3 (.3 maybe?). Or perhaps it's an HTC update issue?
Anybody have any ideas? Perhaps a way to disable headset controls for the phone app alone? I always yank the earbuds when I'm on a call anyway.
Any help is appreciated,
BR

Phone sounds and bluetooth

Hey, just got my Sensation today (loving it). Coming from 2 previous HD2's both using Cyanogen (primarily). Anyways, I've had THIS headset for a few months now, worked perfectly fine with my HD2('s) never had a problem. Now, with the Sensation, it works like it's supposed to with music and phone audio, everything sounds great. But here's the problem now, anytime an alarm goes off, or i get a text message, (not sure about calls, didn't get a call today while using the headset) or any type of notification sound (email, low battery, etc...) it plays the sound in my headset, but also from the handset as well, which, isn't a good thing, cause it's supposed to be a semi-quiet workplace, and it's kind of embarrassing when your sitting there quietly listening to Pandora, and Metal Gear Solid alert sound effects start going off when you wife texts you...
TL;DR: Old HD2 played ALL sounds through my bluetooth headset ONLY. New Sensation plays notification sounds in BOTH headset and handset.
Shameless self bump? Been a long while since I've used xda, don't remember if self bumping is frowned upon. If so, I apologize, but anyone have any ideas?
Also mini update. The same situation happens on my wifes mytouch, I get notification sounds from both headset and handset.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App
A solution is at hand
I had the opposite problem, in that I wanted the sound to come out of both headset and phone, and it was only coming out the headset. Problematic when both phone and headset were in my pocket...
Go to Home > menu > Settings > CyanogenMod Settings > Sound, and down a ways you'll see a section titled "Always play on speaker" with three checkboxes for Notifications, Ring tones & Alarms. Frob these and your problem will be solved.
Sound
I think this Sensation phone has a problem with its sounds in general. When i put a call on speaker witha the volume all the way up its still very hard to here the conversation. Has anyone had this issue?

[Q] Music apk

Hi. I have the inspire. Its rooted and has the new 2.3.3 rom. My problem is that when i try to listen to music it skips, changes songs, opens voice dialer and then on one instance it called someone. I reinstalled the rom, restarted the phone, but it still persists. I have an idea it might have something to do with the headphones being inserted. When it was doing this i took out the headphones and plugged them back in and it played music just fine for a few minutes. any ideas?
EDIT
I just noticed right now that the icon changes from headset to headphones. Right now im listening to it and it playing just fine as long as the icon is set to headphone.
Edit 2:
Well i found this "Hey. I'm dealing with an annoying behavior, and I'm not sure if it's by design, or if there's something wrong with my phone.
When I plug in headphones... everything goes wonky. Specifically, the phone seems to take feedback from any pressure (usually accidental) I apply to the headphone cable. If I push it one way, it goes into voice command mode. If I push it another, it redials the last call I made. And other such along these lines. Why is it doing this? Is it by design, or is there something wrong with my device? How do I make it stop? Every time I jostle the phone while trying to listen to music, I have the phone annoying redialing my last call, going to voice mode, or otherwise interrupting what I'm doing.
I got the feeling, from one of the apps I was playing with, that this may be something called "headset commands," but I haven't been able to find anything else about that. "
Its a diffrent phone but same issue. I tried wiggling my headphone jack around a bit and found that the icon changed to headset. So ill leave this thread here for anyone having the same issues, as i couldnt find anything for this issue with the inspire forum.
I had the same problem on CM7, turns out the phone was recognizing my headphones as a bluetooth headset with built in controls, and it was confused thinking it was getting signals to skip around and change songs. I fixed it by installing a widget called Headset Blocker from the Android market, once I enable it everything works well.
Thanks! now my world is ok.

[Q] ICS problem with music, podcast player and everything audio related

Hi all,
ICS 4.0.3
Ver. 3.32.707.10
I was wondering if anybody else is encountering similar problems.
Ever since the ICS update, my music player, podcast player (beyondPod) and e-book audio player have gone crazy.
I cannot understand the logic behind it, but the player either stops, skips, pauses, jumps... u name it. Not all the time, but (please do not laugh!) when the car door is slammed shut.
It got me thinking. Is it the shock or the vibration? Tapping or gently bashing the phone does not disrupt the player. Only door of the car closing. It happens every morning and every night when someone gets off the car before me.
Rebooting, taking battery out, clearing out some stuff from my Micro SD... simple stuff to eliminate causes have had no success.
Only rebooting the phone can solve the problem. Force closing the app does not help.
I was thinking that after a heavy days use, maybe the RAM was running out, bu the problem starts even within 20 min of reboot, with no other unnecessary apps running.
I am using Jays headset app since my headphone has that button that allows me to stop/play skip and volume control etc. This has nothing to do with it? I have had it for a while since Gingerbread...
If it were apps from the market that was problematic, i can understand. But since this affects the stock music player as well as other audio related features, I am baffled.
Anybody else? Suggestions?
Found the definitive cause. But still have no solution.
OK guys and gals...
I had my podcast player and stock sense music player do crazy stuff on me, ever since the ICS update.
Maybe the scratched paint is the cause of headache for some people, and covering/insulating it may relieve it of problems, but my feeling is that for quite a few that have posted on this thread, their reasons of malfunction differ, and in fact, are on the same boat as I am.
Please read my post which is the link below to understand the full symptom.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=24511005
I am not sure if ICS update from GS is related to this problem directly or indirecty. All I know is that I had a happy sensation until the update OTA.
Here is the reason why I know that neither the paint or back cover of sensation is the cause of skipping/jumping/stopping/calling last contacted....
I tried the experiment with the back cover off, but I could not replicate the problem, thus no paint chip, back cover or short circuit of any kind is the answer.
So, by method of deduction, with the cover off, I tried wriggling the headphone in the socket to see if that had any effect. None. I tried plugging and unplugging. None. I tried using the remote button to control the music app and the podcast player. No problem. The play/pause/vol up and down etc all worked fine. I even uninstalled the jays app and tried. Without the app, the button on my headset does play and stop, answer and end calls. It got me thinking, and the environment it caused the symptoms only could point to the mic on my headphones.
And guess what? It is the bloody Microphone on the headset. I bet you there are some of you with this problem using the stock headset supplied that have built in hands free.
Basically, the pressure spike caused by slamming of he car door, is the same effect as blowing into the mic of the headset. And once this is done, the only way you can stop is reboot.
Since there have been no posts on this thread, and while I was hunting desperately for answers, I came across a different thread. Similar symptoms. I posted there too, so u might want to take a peep.

Weird symptom. Possible solution? (Apart from using headsets without mic)
I have the same problem with my Sensation after i flashed the ICS. I have flashed two different custom ICS and with both i had the same problem. The music app goes crazy. I haven't find any pattern on what is that that cause the music app go crazy. When I touch the jack of the headphones (the original headphones of the Sensation) the app start forwarding, skipping track pause, etc. Also the same happens when i put the phone in my pocket. I haven't found any solution but maybe is the signal from the microphone as you said. When i shake the jack i think that signal noise i created and makes the app go crazy.
I hope someone will find a solution soon.
I just found a way to hear music in my ICS Sensation. I just disabled the default music app in the app settings that comes with the rom and i have installed the ESfile explorer which has its own music player. I am using ESFileExplorer's music player and i don't have problems till now...
Hope this is useful for someone.
I think issue is software related. Look here:

Does it happen ONLY when using headsets? I have the same problem, but is caused by the jack connector (only in ICS). It randomly sends signals that the phone understand as multimedia commands. If you remove the headsets and play the music with the speaker, no problem at all.
Crap.

[Q] HTC One X AT&T Music Player issue.

Hi everyone. I just got an HTC One X on AT&T today from the store. Up until today I had owned an SIII also from AT&T. The music player on the SIII kept freezing and the auto correct wasn't working so I changed to the One X. I listen to music a lot on my phones so I expect the music player to be reliable. Anyway, the music player on the HTC One X is great, however, it's been skipping to the next track without my touching the screen before the current song is finished. I was questioning my sanity because I figured maybe I was bumping the screen, but the player just skipped to the next song a few minutes ago and my hand was nowhere near it. Has anyone else had this issue and is there a way to eliminate it?
Naturally, this is somewhat discouraging as I've only had the phone for a matter of hours. A friend of mine is pressuring me to get an iPhone 5 (blasphemy!) and I'm actually considering getting one since android is clearly not cutting it at the moment. I understand there are other music players on the market but the simple reality of it is that I shouldn't have to download a 3rd party music app, plus, I actually like the stock app.
Thanks for reading!
EDIT: My library is all MP3 files, not an internet radio type thing if it wasn't obvious. The skipping doesn't happen too often, maybe a few times an hour. Beats audio is enabled when this happens, I haven't tried without.
Same Problem!
I have the same problem, when I'm listening to music the voice dialer suddenly pops up and starts dialing numbers from my call history to recent dialed or received numbers. this is so irritating. I installed an app called "headset Blocker" from Google play, it stopped the problem. But my question is why doesn't this phone support other companies earphones? And also whenever I put my headset into it, it displays the symbol of a headphone with mic, is it normal? If not what is the solution to this?

The reply above also raises an interesting point. Are you listening with headphones that have controls? Could you be pressing them, to make the track skip? If they are headphones meant for an iPhone, the buttons may not be doing what you think they should. Or their might be a short in the headset or the headset jack on the phone, that is making the phone think you are pressing the headset button. Have you tried another set of headphones, or listening on the phone's speaker?
Otherwise, try a factory reset, and if that doesn't solve it, swap it for a new one. Its not Android itself, I've never had this problem. Just a hardware or software defect with your particular handset, which can happen on any device, including the iPhone.

What do you mean by "support"? Do you mean, why don't the control buttons work on some headsets? Its because those controls were designed to work for an iPhone. Unfortunately, there aren't many headphones with buttons that work on Android out-of-the-box, but the mic should work fine (as well as the earphone audio, of course).
If you are trying to use a headset designed for the iPhone, and want the buttons to work, try this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.co.chobirich.tools.mediabutton&feature=also_installed

Yes, that is normal. All it means is that headphones are attached. A bit obvious (as in, why do you need an icon to tell you that?). But intentional, nonetheless.

Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it.
I am using a pair of Sennheiser headphones, there are no controls on them. I performed a hard reset but the problem persists although less frequently. Do you still think I should exchange it for a new one? Since you brought up software defects, I will add that when I restart the phone or power it off, then back on; when I unlock the screen the dialer is shown instead of the home screen. This only happens during the first unlock, so to speak, after restarting. Of course I just press the Home key to get back to the home screen, but it's still a nuisance.
No controls in my earphone.
No, I'm not using earphones with controls. I'm just using an earphone I got from my previous android phone because the At&t version of HTC One X did NOT come with earphones. But I must say, when I listen to music without the earphones, everything is perfect, but when I insert my earphone the voice dialer keeps popping up, the clarity of music deteriorates, tracks go forward and backward and what not. This is also happening while watching videos using earphones. That is why I asked if this phone supports all standard 3.5mm jack earphones or only HTC earphones.

Fix for headphone problems.

This is a cross post from the thread I found on reddit, I take no credit for this find.
The problem for this person was "I purchased some Beyedynamic DT990 Pros (low impedance ersion; 32ohm) and there is some issue with the jack. It seems to trigger the button of me pressing the microphone button, with minimal movement. It either brings up voice command or just pauses the music, even if I just turn off the screen. If I try to increase the volume it also brings up the voice command sometimes.
Just moving the phone slowly causes the music to stop (if it doesnt already when turning the screen off.
Anyone have any solutions to this? These are good headphones, they work with my pc perfectly. I will test with my ipod aswell.
I was thinking of getting a female to male jack just to see if a different connector works. But these are audiophile headphones so the quality isn't really questionable."
and the solution was
"Download the app SoundAbout. It lets you force your phone to detect the headphones correctly. My G3 was doing the exact same thing and ever since I downloaded SoundAbout around a week or so ago everything has been working fine." "What I do is put the headphones into the jack, but not all the way until it clicks in. Just put it in enough to where the phone senses them. If the phone senses them as a headset, remove the headphones (not necessary to take them completely out, just off of the sensor inside the headphone jack) and try again. Once it detects them as regular headphones you can click them in like normal."
Sorry for the poor formatting, and unable to link the reddit thread because my account lacks posts but I found this extremely helpful and hope everyone with this issue does too.

Thread is LG G3 can't deal with proper headphones-
Thanks man this solution was a breath of fresh air! Only issue is I still get pops between songs, if you don't can you please tell me which settings you're using? One more thing, you'd help alot of people if you were to share it in the non-AT&T LG G3 sub-forum... Specifically, this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/help/aux-cable-problem-t2802719. If you could post there or make a new thread that would be amazing... Thanks again man.

The settings I use is the default ones, but I heard setting Media Audio to "Wired Speakers" fixes the issue too, however it disables you from playing music out of your phone speakers so what I do is. Set Media Audio on "Let App Decide" then created a widget on my homescreen for SoundAbout and just toggle it on before I plug in headphones.
Hopefully LG will fix it sooner or later. Kinda lame to have to use an extra app for something that should just work. That's why those apple guys make fun of us android guys. Thanks for the tip.
