Terrible audio quality when recording video - T-Mobile myTouch 4G Slide

A most disappointing realisation this weekend was the absolutely abysmal sound quality when recording videos on the MT4GS. I only just got the phone and hadn't done much 1080p video yet. I think I put too much faith in phone cameras.
Is it this bad for everyone?
Also, any ideas on how this can be fixed? Perhaps the magicians here at XDA can figure out how to use the voice call microphone instead (unless that's the one it currently uses)?

My second (I had the G2). I take it this is a problem with all MT4GSs then.

Yep. The speaker is bad too.

lol holy crap that was horrid. sounds like it is using the voice call mic. seems to be fine in lower decibels, but i'm gonna try mess with my guitar and amp and try some recordings.

I think speaker placement is horrible as well, everytime I try to hold it to listen to music or whatever, I end up covering the speaker, raising the volume all the way, and then when I move my finger, it blasts, and I have to quickly lower it again...

EQ function alone makes it worthwhile...more testing to come
the is the best proffesional looking Music player .. prev used astro player .. it was nice , this is the awesome... feels good and solid
made into my main music player .. especially the EQ are great with around 16 bands ?
I totally agree. PowerAMP is the best music player I've tried on android. I used Mixzing back on 1.6 and it wasn't bad, but this is damn good player I have owned two SonyEricssons before and they both were Walkmans, so I'm used to have a phone producing good sound. Finally, my X10 does it as well

Yep, i come from mixzing too.
PowerAMP is top app.
Winamp is just a kid compared with PowerAMP
I also was a fan of Mixzing, but must say that Poweramp looks even better.
However, there is one thing that is not to my taste and those are the widgets.
In Mixzing, I have a full screen widget and a full screen lockscreen. Poweramp only has the 4x1 or 4x2.
If there was a full-screen version of the widget, then this would be damn perfect.
I agree, best music app. However I just can't get the X10 to produce sound as good as I expect. I was hoping 2.1 might lead me to a better sound. I have an iPod nano and it just plays louder, with better sound quality/clarity. Anyone else notice this? Maybe I just have a bunk phone.
When you listen to metal, you want it loud and clear. I may be destroying my ears, but at least its epically brutal.
I think this app is fine, but I just wonder why yiu have to change to lockscreen when the widget doesnt cover the whole screen, might just as well put the normal lockscreen beneath it. How freaking loud do you want it?!

It's not really that it needs to get much louder but when it is at max volume I can hear noticeable distortion. Guitar notes and cymbal crashes turn into a mash of static and sandpaper, when using the same headphones (shure se115s) on the nano at higher volume produces a clearer, richer sound.
Anyway sorry for straying off topic, if it weren't for my issues I would be all over this app all the time. It looks the best, it has the nicest features and i'm glad the lock screen widget doesn't make you unlock with that, then revert to the standard unlock like other apps did on 1.6.
Now that you mention that, I remember hearing distortions and some breaking sound on certain tracks on 1.6. It didnt seem to be on all tracks but just some of em.

You can try to look for Different music players in the market that may let you raise the volume higher. PowerAMP let me raise it a little bit after tweakage but not significantly. Im Sure theirs other ways if rooted too.

Cool thanks! I'm going through the market now looking at different music players. I am rooted on perfect storm 1.2 plus ziggy's Beta Kernel MECHA BFS 6 Apr 11 kernel...
There's an app called AudioBoost that can help... But you must be rooted to use it.

Beats by DRE or what else I found on the portal

Well I am in the mood/ a mission to just royally mess up my phone today and luckily the portal is chock full of suggestions and mods to help me do just that.
The first I found was the GPS fix from earlier and now:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1523760
Beats by DRE for all Gingerbread roms.
I went through it a bit and it didnt seem like it was gonna mess with anything (mostly different files) so I went ahead and flashed it.
Everything is working fine and there doesnt seem to be any conflicts with Voodoo Sound. Does it improve the audio? I guess I am not enough of an audiofile to really know...
Just wanted to say that it seems safe to flash and throw it out as an option
Just to help people understand what Beats is (from what I know). It is more or less an audio filter that changes how the audio is processed coming from the device. It also changes the EQ curve some to accentuate the lower frequencies and then gives you a "distorted" output.
How can you tell if it installed correctly? is there any settings? Thanks.
As far as I can tell there no settings, and they are just under the hood enhancements.

it may have to do with the quality of the audio card in the charge. I felt like i noticed more of a difference when I flashed this on my kindle fire than I did on my charge.

That was my whole point... A device that renders sound exceptionally well is going to benefit less from minor software tweaks than one with a ****ty card that plays poorly out of the box.
Just because someone says "build quality" doesn't mean that they mean "bad build quality".
I think Beats sounds like crap anyway. It overemphasizes the bass and muddies up the mids. It's really intended for bass heavy music and doesn't really work well for anything else, IMO.
Beats... Audiophiles? Thanks for making me laugh this morning.

Headphone Amp Software

I love the Voodoo headphone amp as it boosts the headphone output to a decent level, but installing voodoo sounds has its problems on ICS with calls, etc and all the know bugs. Is there a headphone amp app or widget or something? Best I've found is to make a preset EQ with everything boosted but this affects sound more than Supercurio's work on the Wolfman chip and enabling the headphone boosts.
Jetaudio is the player I've been using on my other phone. Get it from play store. Once you have it go to EQ and look at the top. There is a built in preamp. Slide the bar to 10 and watch your ears bleed. It is by far the best free player that I've used.

Actually thank eollie. I'm pretty sure he's the one that let me know about it. Well it was either him or Lumin. Hard to tell the other members of TFTN apart anymore. lol
I'll give Jet a try myself.
Not to hijack, if anyone knows of dev info on compiling new codecs for Android, would you PM me? The lack of Apple lossless keeps me from using my phone for music.

Can you really tell the difference between lossless and compressed? I've tried with some really good earbuds and it's super hard for me to tell. Try talking some albums that you know really well and converting them to mp3 at 224. If you can tell the difference from the phone I'd be amazed.

Yeah, I use Grado cans and anything below 512 kbps is like nails on a chalkboard to me. My library is all Apple lossless at this point and transcoding on the fly is a complexity I'd rather not deal with.
Edit -- Switching to IEMs has made anything compressed even at 512 kbps rather painful. As full-rate Apple Lossless or Flac is typically around 800-1000 kbps, at least for me, there isn't any meaningful gain for the pain.
jetAudio does support Apple Lossless now, and doesn't have the gaps between tracks that used to plague older Android players. It's got it's own usability issues, but it does a decent job.
Now if I can figure out why Voodoo Sound occasionally stops working for me to control amp gain so I can keep the digital gain maxed out.

Since I stopped using my 4g as a phone and just use it as a music player voodoo sounds has worked all the time every time. I think receiving phone calls might be what is causing it to stop working. I few others have reported the same. Something to take a look at at least. If your using jet it has it's own built in pre amp that works well.
I think that maxed out issue you are talking about is a setting in voodoo app causes the db keep going up

I seem to be finding that either placing or receiving a call "disconnects" Voodoo Sound from the analog gain.
The preamp control in jetAudio is a little different -- Voodoo has the benefit of keeping the digital gain as high as possible and just using the audio gain, which should improve sound quality by keeping digitization noise lower.
I have logs for that i go on wheresmycellphone.com and call my phone run logocat right before the call. No one has provided logs yet ? There seems to be dual speaker mode thats changed and an audio route problem. Do u want me to up logs. Does voodoo work on any of ics roms with just dsp manager and how do u tell if it is working really. I think the tv out driver plays a slight role as well there is bluetooth sharing enabled during call when headset not being used or anything.

I bet you still listen to vinyl don't you. LOL I see your point for sure but on my earbuds I can't tell the difference. As long as it's loud and clear and loud it's good enough for me.

[Q] CM10 High pitch sound when using camera.

Hey I've been having this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8GTloRDO08 issue when recording video; a high pitched sound. Is there a software fix? It didn't happen until I flashed CM10. Appreciate any help,

I've looked into this issue. Does it happen if you have earphones plugged in while recording? I believe it is feedback from the external speaker and the mic. Just a theory. Happens on sound recordings and third party cameras also.

I'm not sure it is a widely known issue. I've looked on several forums and haven't seen much posted regarding the one XL. This is a common problem for many devices, but each one seems to get fixed at some point (or people stop complaining about it).
Because it happens to other apps besides the camera, I assume (with no real knowledge to back the assumption) that this is a problem in the kernel.

Agreed. ViperXL has been an all star for me. That said, I would drop it in a heart beat for CM10 if the camera was fixed and the signal didn't drop to edge so randomly. CM10 is so fast. A shame really.

Sorry for the bump, but this is an issue yet to be resolved.
I've been experimenting with video recording a little bit. There is a high-pitched hiss during video recording, but what I've found is that when headphones are plugged in, the entire phone (camera, any voice recording app) switches to some sort of mono recording.
Try plugging in headphones/earbuds and then recording another video. The audio level is really low except when you talk into the bottom microphone. It's as if the phone thinks it's on a call. If you are not within inches of the bottom mic, your voice won't even be picked up. The audio recording level will be this way until a reboot.
I'm running King Kang M1 rohan b6, so I'm not sure if this is an AOKP or CM issue, but I'm pretty sure it applies to all AOSP roms.
My video recording was working perfectly on stock sense, so not a hardware issue.
Anyone else having similar results?
