Hey I've been having this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8GTloRDO08 issue when recording video; a high pitched sound. Is there a software fix? It didn't happen until I flashed CM10. Appreciate any help,

I've looked into this issue. Does it happen if you have earphones plugged in while recording? I believe it is feedback from the external speaker and the mic. Just a theory. Happens on sound recordings and third party cameras also.

I noticed this too...is it widely known to the devs? And any idea how to fix it?

I'm not sure it is a widely known issue. I've looked on several forums and haven't seen much posted regarding the one XL. This is a common problem for many devices, but each one seems to get fixed at some point (or people stop complaining about it).
Because it happens to other apps besides the camera, I assume (with no real knowledge to back the assumption) that this is a problem in the kernel.

I have to keep reverting back to sense unfortunately because of small things like this. I really like pure android better but haven't gotten past all the little bugs.

Agreed. ViperXL has been an all star for me. That said, I would drop it in a heart beat for CM10 if the camera was fixed and the signal didn't drop to edge so randomly. CM10 is so fast. A shame really.

Sorry for the bump, but this is an issue yet to be resolved.
I've been experimenting with video recording a little bit. There is a high-pitched hiss during video recording, but what I've found is that when headphones are plugged in, the entire phone (camera, any voice recording app) switches to some sort of mono recording.
Try plugging in headphones/earbuds and then recording another video. The audio level is really low except when you talk into the bottom microphone. It's as if the phone thinks it's on a call. If you are not within inches of the bottom mic, your voice won't even be picked up. The audio recording level will be this way until a reboot.
I'm running King Kang M1 rohan b6, so I'm not sure if this is an AOKP or CM issue, but I'm pretty sure it applies to all AOSP roms.
My video recording was working perfectly on stock sense, so not a hardware issue.
Anyone else having similar results?

A most disappointing realisation this weekend was the absolutely abysmal sound quality when recording videos on the MT4GS. I only just got the phone and hadn't done much 1080p video yet. I think I put too much faith in phone cameras.
Is it this bad for everyone?
Also, any ideas on how this can be fixed? Perhaps the magicians here at XDA can figure out how to use the voice call microphone instead (unless that's the one it currently uses)?

lol holy crap that was horrid. sounds like it is using the voice call mic. seems to be fine in lower decibels, but i'm gonna try mess with my guitar and amp and try some recordings.
I think speaker placement is horrible as well, everytime I try to hold it to listen to music or whatever, I end up covering the speaker, raising the volume all the way, and then when I move my finger, it blasts, and I have to quickly lower it again...
**UPDATE 29 MAY**
CM7-RC3 and CM7 nightly 20120527 both work with the March 2012 baseband and have much higher outgoing volume! I'm not sure the issue I opened on the tracker had any part in this, but thanks to all who helped anyways! Your support was very much appreciated.
As CM7-based ROMs sync to the newer source, I am sure that they too will be fixed.
****************
I'm converting this thread into a Call to Arms! If you are frustrated with the low microphone volume on anything based on CM, please visit the thread on CM's issue tracker to leave your comments and "star" the issue. This is NOT an attempt to flood their thread with meaningless garbage. My intent is to let the CyanogenMod team know that this issue is very real and annoying. I think I can speak for most of us in saying that CM is a blessing to the Android world and that we mean no disrespect. My sole intent is to not let this issue get swept under the rug as it has in the past.
If you have a minute, please leave comments both here AND on the issue tracker to ensure this gets taken care of in due time. Please be respectful with your comments, but share your experience with the team in order to let them know that you are affected. Thank you all for your support with this issue.

This project is hereby abandoned by me. I don't have the knowledge, and I don't have the time to learn. If someone else wants to pick this up, I left a fair amount of documentation and research here in the thread and I will be available through PM if you have any questions. The best thing you can do right now is check the official bug report on CM's Issue Tracker, star it and maybe leave a comment or two. Sorry to let you guys down, but I pushed as many buttons as I'm capable of pressing at this point in time. Hopefully RC can figure this one out.

*Update again* I hit a wall and am not savvy enough to know where else to look. I submitted this bug to the issue tracker on CM's google code site here: http://code.google.com/p/cyanogenmod/issues/detail?id=5190
Feel free to head over there and "star" it to get updates. I really hope they will help us out. Thanks for the support guys. Going to give them a little bit and see where it takes us.
*Update* Changed thread title for clarity. In the process of trying to unpack/edit/repack a kernel to increase the volume of the microphone. Lucky for me, it's mostly scripts.
Let me start this thread out by saying that I am not a developer, coder, github user, etc. Yes, I'm a noob when it comes to all things coding.
Alright. I searched and searched and searched some more for the commit on CyanogenMod's github. I found it.
https://github.com/CyanogenMod/andr...mmit/a042d3bba7dc7d563ef58dfd2b0811722d924f86
I *think* this is the patch that caused the low microphone volume since October of last year. It could be one of its parent patches, but it's related. This commit is also included in CM's ICS branch, which could be causing the low microphone volume issue that some of us have been experiencing for so long.
I went to edit that file so I could try to fuddle my way through a build (which I've never done before) but I couldn't find the actual file in the github. Was this file removed? Are input volumes adjusted somewhere else now? I'm spoiled by our developers and would love it if someone would try reverting this patch if it's possible. Anyone else feel the same?

Update! bassmadrigal from the CyanogenMod staff helped me locate the microphone volume values. They are in the /sys/devices/platform/star_wm8994/data file. Using an older CM7 (167) build, I was able to modify the volumes until the phone reboots. I tested the voice quality by calling my own voicemail since the volumes can be different while in a call.
Having done this, I flashed a newer CM9 build. The values at the specific registers in that file are indeed different on CM9, but I was unable to modify them. Any modifications to that file via root explorer or adb were ineffective. I even went so far as to delete the file completely, but it was regenerated within seconds. There is some kind of built-in security (either in Android 4.x itself or CM9) that prevents manipulation of this file, and others I'm sure.
Does anyone know of a way to manipulate this file?

From what I'm told, this file is actually part of the kernel. And I know nothing about any of this stuff. Is there anyone who knows how to modify and build their own kernel from source of whom I could ask some questions? I browsed around on Faux's github, but I seriously have no idea what I'm looking at.

Oh definitely, it just seemed to get shoved under the rug like it never happened a bunch of people in Baldwin guy cm7 thread stated it a bunch and it never got any attention if the OP can point someone in thebright direction after he does a bunch reading and reaching out to people then it can get resolved. It is honestly the only "bug" in cm7 that I hate. A bunch of people said they just switched ril's to fix it but I don't think so, I've done plenty of recording and what not with voicemails and I can easily tell between 2.3.3 to cm7 and found a build that was around 150ish

I agree with you on it being the only thing I hate about CM7/9.
Anyway, another update for you guys. I found a guide on how to unpack the kernel and ramdisk from boot.img so I can modify this file, then repack it. Downloading Ubuntu now. Going to install it in a Virtual Machine and see if I can do this. Might take me a bit though. I'm a busy guy
Well, I was able to unpack the kernel and split it into the kernel and ramdisk. The ramdisk contains the "sys" directory, but it's empty. I can't find the file that I need to modify. Maybe it's in the kernel part of the split.
I would just like to say thank you.
And I wish I could help!

Record your self on a stock based rom or leave a voice mail its very noticeable, speaker phone is almost pointless while on cm7/9 you set the phone down 2 feet from your face and they can't hear you practically it sounds like you're whispering.

You're absolutely right mt3g, speakerphone is horrible. And I'm typically kind of a "chin talker" who lets the phone drift down away from the mouth. If I pay attention to holding the phone up further in front of my mouth and speak firmly, I can usually get heard alright on the other side, but I'm used to phones in the past picking up a lot better, and sometimes I need to speak softly if my kids are napping, etc.
FYI, this is my test environment (to eliminate variables):
Always call voicemail to perform the tests, because the input volume can change from just using a voice recorder app to actually in a call.
I play the same part of the same song at the same volume with my phone in the same position every time.
Just nandroiding back and forth between stock/early CM7/late CM7/CM9, there is a major difference.

If I'm not mistaken, custom kernels designed for CM7/9 are based on the original CM7/9 kernels. Regardless, I have personally verified this issue exists with faux's and morfic's kernels.

It's a damn hard problem to fix. If you think about it it's a deep down driver level issue that requires a pretty broad skill base to diagnose and fix. Years of coding experience to understand yet alone begin to fix it... It doesn't help that this isn't supported by Samsung nor the camera developer.
So it's incredible that the damn thing even turns on. I'd say Entropy and jt are smart enough to fix it in time though

Here's the fix for 720p recording.
I am also torn over the missing 720p recording, but I am still incredibly happy with JB! The only other major issue is the banding I get in photos, although someone had mentioned that possibly JB changed the shutter/refresh speed in the camera which produces the banding under fluorescent lighting conditions. Unfortunately I saw nowhere to manually adjust this.
The other major issue was the darn thing disconnecting from Bluetooth in my Toyota Entune system, but supposedly version 2.12 and the OC V2 Kernel fix the issue. Will be testing it out today.
I get the same lighting effect on my pics as well. Paranoid Android, is working flawlessly. Besides 720 and other issues, its a great rom, and good on battery life.
Everything is almost fixed, so we might get lucky w/ 720

I just wanted to update and say that the banding lines I was receiving seem to be isolated to a specific building at my university. I am guessing the JB Rom somehow changed the shutter rate setting and in doing so it introduced a "flicker" banding line effect due to the fluorescent lighting in the building. If I go outside, or to other buildings with fluorescent lighting it does not do this, so the bulbs in the original building must be perfectly attuned to a rate that interferes with the imaging sensor.
I haven't found a way to tweak or fix this issue, but as long as photos in most other lighting and outside are fine I am alright with it.
Please try this out and let me know if this is also your issue.

Hey Guys so I rooted my HTC ONE X software 2.20 via the temp root, installed twrp recovery and flashed the CM10 Jelly Bean based rom. So far every thing works 100% great as far as i can tell the only issue I have discovered so far is when record video the MIC seems to capture the audio really really low. So when we play the video back can't even hear anything very very low. I know it's not the speaker phone audio, because when i put the phone on speaker when making a call it is loud as normal. When i play movies from youtube it is also Loud as normal, but when playing a video that i recorded with my own phone its really really low.
Does anyone know of a fix? I also tried downloading a different camera app from the Google Play Store and i received the same results where it is record video with very low audio. Thank you.
Haha, oh no! This bug is actually the reason I left the GS3. I think it's possible that it's a CM10 bug. Has anyone experienced this on AOKP or older versions of CM10? I find this to be most unfortunate, but not a big deal as I'm glad to have such a beautiful screen again.
I wonder if the bug is just in the CM10 camera app itself

So I just performed more testing. I downloaded 2 voice recorder apps and discover that both of them also recorded very low. So it seems like a Mic issue when it records it is not boosted high enough.
Anyone know of a Mic fix for when recording with the HTC One X on CM10 ROM?
There was an issue in the earlier CM10/AOKP with low mic volume in calls. Is that happening to you?
I think the issue was fixed, so there may be incorrect settings or faulty hardware.

I just flashed it and checked it out. Volume is EXTREMELY LOW, even when I have the phone to my face. Go ahead and flash the New Experimental http://get.cm/get/4rF and see if it helps

You don't get a high pitched beep with it? I hear mine on the experimental but also get a loud beep with it. I came from stock 2.20 (new One X) actually I might have to take back that claim since I'm on AOKP 10/26 and not CM 10/26

Actually you are right I get an extremely loud beeping feed back. I meant resolved as now its louder then the previous ROM I can actually hear it now, however its still very low quality compared to stock and hope it gets fixed BC this ROM rocks.
Is it possible to get the stock sense camera apk app?

No, the Sense camera would require Sense frameworks unfortunately

I'm so pumped that someone else has experienced the sound issue when recording video. Any thoughts on what's causing the high pitched sound?

I had this issue with v3 as well. It doesn't matter what rom (Viper, Nocturnal, CleanRom) that I use, I am having sound crackles when I record video from the stock camera. I do not have an issue with aznrice's kernel or CleanKernel. I am really confused because it cracks after a full wipe so I know no other app is affecting it. If anyone could help, it would be much appreciated.

Your camera is messing up, obvously. Do you have cam fix flashed?
If not, I have attached it.
All you have to do it put it on your sd card and go into recovery and flash. fixed my cam.
Does your musci player crackle?
Yeah I already flashed the camfix. There is no crackle when I play music. It is not a constant crackle. It is very sporadic.so I think it is certain sounds that make it crackle but I cannot narrow it down.
Hmm... Do you have a back up of your factory ROM on TWRP? Try rebooting that and see if that changes.
You may have a bad audio recorder.

I installed AOKP and have no issues with the rohan kernel. On sense, I did not have issues with stock, CleanKernel, and BrickBeatz sense kernel. So I really think its kernel related, but this is an isolated incident because I haven't read anyone else having this issue.

Well I moved to the Elemental X kernel and had no issues. Then 5 minutes later BeastMode 4.2 came out. I flashed and hoped it would work, and to my surprise no sound pops. I am extremely happy. Thank you for your help.
EDIT: Actually sound pops are still there, very annoying. I think I'll go back to a different kernel.

Might be an isolated problem, but then again, could be an issue and people haven't used their audio recorder, yet. I would go ahead and make a logcat dump and save it. Just in case this problem pops up in the future with someone else. I would test Beastmode, but right now... I can't flash it. No matter what I try...:crying: So I am testing ElementalX, so far I am loving it.
EDIT: Flashing KingCobra ROM right now. Might try and flash Beastmode v4.2 on this one.

Yeah I flashed the leaked 4.2 camera. The video cam works with no issues, but I still have preference with sense cam because of the 16:9 ratio. I really like the 4.2 camera but will not fully use the app until there is a fullscreen ratio. Thank you for your help.
