[Q] Should I buy the Sidekick 4G? - T-Mobile Sidekick 4G

Hello everyone ! I have a pretty general question for you guys. Should I buy the sidekick 4G ?*
Here's the story:
I'm switching carriers (MetroPCS>T-Mobile). So I am planning to get tmobile prepaid $50 a month. This means I have to purchase the phone for 299 instead of the 79 with a 2 year agreement. I don't so much mind spending that amount of money if the phone is worth it ( although that is as much as I'd pay for a phone) .*
does the phone live up to what it claims to do ? I just need it to do what it claims to do , right. *
I just want to hear what you guys think since you own the phone !
Thank you in advance !

Its an okay device. It just has to much going on for me to like it, as I'm talking about the user interface. The specs are decent, but with all these dual core processors out there, this phone really can't match them. The only pro to the phone is it does have a nice keyboard...if your into physical keyboard phones. There's my two cents haha..
Pure meXdroidMod!

No....if you don't mind spending a little more, you should get the HTC Sensation.
The only thing the Sidekick 4G has going for it is the keyboard...that's all.
The HTC Sensation destroys it in all other aspects.

The sidekick has a longer battery life than the g2x n most likely the sensation (19 days)

Thanks for the replies !
My only worry is that the phone is laggy when using normal operations such as texting, phone dialing, occasional web browsing. I don't plan on using the device for anything 'heavier' than that, I have an iPad and an iPod touch that I can use for heavier operations at home . I just want a reliable phone
What are your experiences on normal day to day use ? In terms of OS functionality and 'smoothness'.
Ps. Woah the sensation is very expensive haha I'm afraid it's out of my price range.

This phone is not that bad, if your just a standard user for texting and web surfing with a qwerty keyboard too then I say get it. So far I haven't much down fall with this phone since I rooted and added gingerclone update2 asop. And since this my 2 android phone coming from mytouch 3g its a big difference. Hope this help with your phone shopping.

It's a nice phone, once you get a few things changed (imho). Don't expect much sk4g specific mods to it though, what you get is basically what you have to stick with, unlike some other android phones with alot more dev love.

I send 20000 texts a month I use 6gigs of my data I love this phone I've flashed the roms and gingerclone v2 is the best and fastestthe messaging app in it has the option to press enter and reply and press the back button to the web page I'm surfing and it works great I love the keyboard at first you won't but after an hour of using it it is amazing

So I went with the sidekick and I'm liking everything on it until today.... :\ I started experienced the whole freezing issue on the phone. The touch screen locks up and the only way to use it is by either turning it off and back on or by moving with the optical trackball.
I have been reading around that the update that tmobile released is what caused these problems on the sidekick, what a shame. I checked my firmware version and it matches that of the newest update.
Which brings me to two questions;
1) can I flash the original firmware provided in these forums, in order to 'revert' or 'downgrade' ? Is the firmware universal that it would work on any sidekick ?
And
2) how do I flash recovery mod ? I'm having a bit of trouble understanding the tutorial on how to do it from these forums . Everytime I boot into recovery I have the original recovery by android (I think) pressing 'reinstall packages' (can't quite remember the exact name but its the only option that sounds like that) is the only way to load up clockwork mod. I don't want to use clockwork like that because I feel that it is a light flash on my phone and id like to be able to boot directly into it.
Anyways I know the post might be long but I hope I get some responses once again to get this resolved ! Its a shame really that the update bugged the phone, because the phone is superb when its working fine.
Thanks again !

As for the recovery question, the fake flash CWM (what you have) is just fine, and works the same way as a normal CWM that's built into the kernel (boots straight into it). If you reallly want a built in CWM, you could flash the Bali kernel, which has CWM built in, otherwise just use fake flash.

Considering this phone. Would like to hear from current owners. Likes, dislikes. Are you rooted? How?

I love the charge. Came from droid 1 which is what I used to learn to root. I rooted using odin which was very similar to rsd lite for Motorola. Xda has excellent guides on how to do this. Screen is just super. I had a screen protector on it but took it off cause screen so much better without it. My current rom is Eclipse 1.2 and its badass. Use the kernel recommended.

I've had this phone for 3 weeks now prior i had thunderbolt battery sucked signal sucked etc. now the only thing so far with the charge is it's a little laggy out the box not bad and i hate that when it gets to 100% charge it always wakes me up at 2:00am i was worried about the small amount of internal storage but i havent filled it yet it works great as a hotspot and usb tethering the sound quality is great
i'm really glad i went ahead and changed to this phone also i;m not rooted i wanna
but i;m holding out a little longer not much as of the 7th the hotspot feature will be gone so i've read and i'll be rooting it then because i need this feature for my buss. i travel alot and need to use my laptop for certain things and i want netflix lol i hope this helps you some if not ask some direct questions i'll be more than happy to respond
of the devices verizon has the offer at this moment, this is the best 4G LTE device and I would get it again. i really love this device and recommend it to anyone looking for an lte phone. yes, it is a little laggy out of the box but that's just because of touchwiz and RFS. Once you root it and voodoo it (convert the file system to EXT4) the phone is way faster and more responsive.
in addition to this, there is no use waiting for something else. on the horizon, the only other LTE device coming up is the BIONIC and because it's a motorola its probably going to have a locked bootloader. it will also be much bulkier, heavier, and include blur. other than that, the galaxy s II (if it ever comes out on verizon) probably won't be LTE.
also, make sure you get this before the 7th so you get unlimited data.

G2x should I purchase ?

I really wana buy the phone and root it and put cm7 would I still have random shutdowns ? Please share your experience . Right now I have HTC panache from Canada if anyone wana trade
I would like to know the same question. The only difference is that I bought the g2x already and I'm about to kick t mobile in the face because this is the second one that I have had and they are extremely unstable (t mobile told me the phone was a great phone they are full of sh#t). I really like the phone and all the features, but I don't want to flash another ROM unless I know that it will fix the random boot looping, and random shutdowns. Until they give me a better phone or lg updates this thing with gingerbread then I'm stuck in a hole and don't want to do anything.
CM7 nightly #80 here. Haven't had a random shutdown/reboot/whatever since I don't know when. Then again, I install do almost every nightly, so my phone gets a reboot every other day or so. Testing Faux's kernel now.
Overall the stock rom is a sack of crap and you should definitely look into another rom/kernel. Most if not all of this phone's issues are software and more get fixed every day.
Not if you don't plan to root it and load a different ROM

I would say a big No to buying this phone now.
Had mine since release day, running CM7 now. Even though things are much better with CM7 this phone has 0 support from LG or Nvidia.
If you are in the market for a new phone I would just wait a few months and get the new Nexus thats going to be released.
N1 was my first phone then the G2x but from now on I think i'm only going to stick to Nexus line of phones as they get their support from Google.
I am with you on this one...if you can wait it out, do it. I have this strange feeling the update we get from LG will be our last. Seriously look how long it's taking them to release plain gb.

If you plan to root/flash/mod it, then YES this will be a great phone for you! Definitely buy it! The experience with stock rom seems to be hit/miss -- some people claim to have no issues, while others (myself included) had problems with random reboots and other glitches.
I rooted mine 2 days after getting it, and I've flashed several different roms onto it, and it has been a great phone. Its a beast for sure. I've settled on CM7 because I love the speed/battery-life/custom settings. But I also like Ultimate G2X 1.0 for a Froyo/Stock-based rom.

What are you basing this "feeling" off of? Its only been 2 months since the phone was released. I do think they would've been better to wait until they had gingerbread ready before releasing the phone, but this phone will be a viable piece of hardware for some time to come. Its a powerhouse.

I'm with you on sticking with the Nexus phones if you want the quickest updates to Android. However I dont think that means this is a bad phone to buy. I had the Nexus One and I loved it. I was even reluctant to switch to the G2X because I loved my N1 so much. The Nexus S wasn't enough of an upgrade for me, so I decided to go ahead and get the G2X. Looking back, I'm glad I did. This phone is amazing and I'd make the same decision again.
Granted, I bought it planning to root/mod it. I wouldn't recommend it for someone who wants a surefire 100% stable stock experience. But if you're gonna mod it then its a perfect phone. Great hardware and there are some great devs supporting this phone.
Im in canada and i bought one from Wind Mobile, (they call it the optimus 2x, but its really a G2x) I havent had a single problem with it thus far, no screen bleeding, freezes, or reboots.
If you do get one, make sure you dont make the mistake i did. When you flash it use Nvflash, and only refer to the g2x forums.
If anyone wants to buy a G2X, I have one for sale in new condition without a scratch or blemish on it. I returned 4 of them to get my current one which is perfect without any bugs and only some minor screen bleed. I don't think you can find one without any bleed at all but mine is only noticeable in a dark room with the brightness cranked to 100 while looking at a dark background. No screen bleed is noticeable during normal use. I had my G2X for almost 2 months without a single reboot, freeze or any other major problem. The battery on mine also lasts a ling time compared to some other reports I see in these forums. If your interested, make me a offer. You will get everything it came with, including the box.

Mines from Wind as well and no issues other than poor stock ROM battery life, since I've rooted it and set profiles with SetCPU and used to Titanium to freeze background bloat I can last until around 10-11PM before it's dead and needs a charge. Not the best but gets me through a day.

Will I like this Phone?

Due to several issues with ATT support and service my wife and I paid our ETFs to terminate our contract. The other night we were looking at T-Mobile and found a cheaper but better plan then what is offered by ATT and the free G2Xs, we jumped on board.
My question is will we like this phone? I have been doing some reading and it sounds like there might be some hardware or software issues. What is the general consensus on this forum about the phone overall? I'm coming from an HTC Aria which was rooted and running an AOSP build and I love it. My wife is coming from a 3GS, which she loves but is willing to try Android.
My phone is perfectly fine, I've only run into reboots when messing with voltages in setCPU.
Cyanogenmod nightly and fauxs kernel works brilliantly.
If you like a crazy fast phone with amazing graphics rendering and fantastic sound then you will love the phone. With Gingerbread most of the problems have been mitigated. Plus you got in on the free deal so you can't beat the price.
You'll like it.

Ever since I updated 2.3.3 (did it only to get baseband) phone is solid. Had growing pains but I'm happy with it. Might just sell the myTouch 4G spare I have. I see no need to move back to it.
Just make sure its updated with latest 2.3.3 you can flash a custom ROM. Can't speak for 2.3.3 because haven't used a stock ROM in ages.
Hardware wise its best phone, despite the bad PR
Why come to Tmobile if you are trying to leave AT&T, when it is very possible that Tmobile will be AT&T soon?
I just got my free g2x. My reboots are only when the phone gets hot which is on the wall charger. When it's charging on my PC its fine. I love it though and will give it more time.

Phone is awesome. LG/Tmobile firmware is decent with the GB upgrade. If you flash a custom rom to this thing then it is freaking amazing. Its a very powerful phone. The unlocked bootloader gives us so much freedom for customizing. Whether you decide to flash roms or not, use the nvflash tool in the development section to put clockworkmod recovery on your phones. Its much more useful than stock recovery, and if you ever want to flash a rom you're all set to do so. Just remember to revert back to stock recovery (using the same nvflash tool) if you have to ever return the phones to T-Mobile for any reason.

Boils down to, do a full factory restore, inside privacy settings, when it boots up, go to Marketplace search "T-Mobile My Account", install that first. Then proceed as you will.
I have some old chargers for other phones that are the same sized, the stock one is 1w and the others I have are 700 mw and 800mw all 5 volts +/- .2
They charge slower, and keep the temperature down. I have like 3 of these hanging around.
Seriously after my full rest, the phone was noticeable cooler. This on 2.2 might not be valid on 2.3 but likely is

Contact tmobile and have them setup your account with visual voicemail, it's free.
I love this phone, +1 for what everyone else said. Its got its issues but its still the best phone out there. The screen resolution IMO beats out any Samsung samoled, hands down. The bad news for you though is that it's more than likely going to be a snafu for you if you go with tmo. It looks like att will be buying them as of next year some time. I hear the FCC will approved this. I hope its not true. Gl

My phone works fine now after about 5-6 of them but their giving this phone away for free for a reason and that's because its a piece of crap. Never has a phone with this good a specs gone down in price so quickly and even given away for free for the second or third time. My previous phone was a HTC Aria, small and under powered compared to the new phones on the market. That being said I love the Aria; easy to root and very durable. I have looked into newer HTC devices and I have "read" that the sensation has some design issues or flaws with the screen? Digitizer? I don't think you'll find a phone out there without problems. I gave the G2X a try because I didn't want to spend any money on new phones considering I have paid my way out of an ATT contract. If the Phone is crap I can go back to my unlocked Aria.
You will run into many problems like auto shutdown/reboot, screen bleed and hit/miss wifi. This phone doesn't work out of the box. Don't waste your time on this phone. I would wait for next Nexus or a Galaxy S2.

Have you ever considered running errant apps has caused your problems? My G2X has been updated to GB, never reboots, never lockups, the wifi is perfect and screen bleed is a non issue. I never use my phone in a dark room with the brightness turned all the way up with a black background. That is the only way to see the so-called screen bleed. All IPS backlight displays have it, and I have had it on every notebook I have ever owned. It is normal and for normal usage a complete non issue. I am using my phone stock and unrooted.

[Q] Best Droid phone to hack?

I currently have a Thunderbolt that just recently became close to unusable to me. (The power button does not work without me jamming it into an edge of a table or wall...I heard this is a common problem). I talked to Verizon, I didn't have insurance since I've never needed it before, all my previous phones have worked so well, and they could not offer me any good options, I'd have to buy a new phone at sticker price.
So I thought to hit up eBay to see what I could get. Then I realized, there are no phones out there that really call out to me as of yet. So then I had an idea, why don't I just get a phone that is easy to root/customize/hack, but use it normally until I do find a phone that does stand out to me. That way, when I do get a NEW phone, I'll have a secondary to "play" around with.
I am a software developer and know a thing or two about OSs and ROMs but not a whole lot. I've hacked various things like 360/Wii games down to the binary level, not "Hi I edited a text file and gave me more $$$ in my game, I'm 733t". That being said, I'm not interested in using easy 1-click install programs to customize the phone. I actually want to understand how it all works. Basically, I just want a phone that acts as a playground that I can just play around with. Any idea's what phone would be best for what I seek? Sorry, I am restricted to a phone that works on the Verizon network, but if there is a phone outside of Verizon that stands out too, I wouldn't mind hearing about it, but I need a Verizon phone unfortunately.
Also, I'd rather have a phone that has a little kick too (hardware-wise)...no sense in hacking an Atari when you can hack an Xbox, if you catch my drift.
I have a fascinate, and it's pretty easily hackable and nearly impossible to brick. very glad I made the decision to get this phone.

I almost forgot how great custom roms were until I got stuck with stock.

Long story short, I had to call att warranty department to get my phone replaced due to my speaker starting to go out. So when I called it in on the 8th (September), which was the last day for my warranty, I flashed back to stock, restored product code, backed up entire sd, and upgraded to official froyo. So since that time I have been on stock patiently waiting my new phone to come in. I've been on customs so long that I forgot how slow and unresponsive stock is. I remember that as I got spoiled with customs that I felt that those roms were starting to feel slow themselves and that although they're faster then stock, maybe it's more of a placebo that I really think it's that much faster then stock. Alas, I was mistaken. All in all I just want to say thank you to the devs of this great community. Being on these custom roms we sometime take for granted that your work, and although not always perfect, it is still far more superior then anything the stock experience can offer. If you don't feel this way right now, just go stock for almost a week and you'll feel my pain. :¬[
Thanks again xda devs.

God! Don't even MENTION iPhones in this company! I've spent the last several DAYS trying to get sh*t off my dad's iphone (songs and the like) so he can put them on his new Captivate.
The changes you have to go through--and programs you have to download--to be able to do what you can do with an Android just by rooting it and getting a decent file manager leaves me speechless... or at least the many words I've used would be incredibly inappropriate on a site that doesn't specialize in murder and mayhem. I've used curse words over the last three days that I didn't even know I knew.
I'm not close to be anything like a real geek, but I swear, I can't imagine why anyone would want a phone from a company that makes it so hard to adjust and take items you actually purchased off of (can you say "DRM"?). The only good news is, my Dad likes the Cappy enough that we will likely never see an iPhone in this house again.
Thank Heavens.
I completely agree with you, I try my best to remember on a daily basis how great-full I am for the Dev's and XDA.
After making sure I have a way to get back to kb2 and backing up my old phone I just half an hour ago flashed miui. Good bye slow stock . I used to stay away from this rim because I heard of bad battery. But with a galaxy s 4g 1650 mah battery I bought from a friend for 7 dollars, it's not so bad

It is not that you didn't know that you knew them so much as you did what I do somedays. You went thru everyone that you knew and then started to join them together in new combos and when you had done every combo you could think of you started inventing new ones. Most people do that instead of running head first into a wall repeatedly or jumping into traffic. I must say both of those would be better than an iphone

My husband rooted his phone, but otherwise had stock Froyo ever since he got his phone. He used to make fun of me for constantly trying new roms out. But he started getting more and more pissed off with his phone and how laggy and unstable it was, and a few weeks ago I offered to flash him a custom rom.
He uses his phone much much more, and I hear a lot fewer curse words out of his mouth now that he isn't cussing at his phone anymore.
Word that homie. I would die without my roms. To me Roms are the number one biggest reason why i like android over iPhone.
