Owner input - Verizon Droid Charge

Considering this phone. Would like to hear from current owners. Likes, dislikes. Are you rooted? How?

I love the charge. Came from droid 1 which is what I used to learn to root. I rooted using odin which was very similar to rsd lite for Motorola. Xda has excellent guides on how to do this. Screen is just super. I had a screen protector on it but took it off cause screen so much better without it. My current rom is Eclipse 1.2 and its badass. Use the kernel recommended.

I've had this phone for 3 weeks now prior i had thunderbolt battery sucked signal sucked etc. now the only thing so far with the charge is it's a little laggy out the box not bad and i hate that when it gets to 100% charge it always wakes me up at 2:00am i was worried about the small amount of internal storage but i havent filled it yet it works great as a hotspot and usb tethering the sound quality is great
i'm really glad i went ahead and changed to this phone also i;m not rooted i wanna
but i;m holding out a little longer not much as of the 7th the hotspot feature will be gone so i've read and i'll be rooting it then because i need this feature for my buss. i travel alot and need to use my laptop for certain things and i want netflix lol i hope this helps you some if not ask some direct questions i'll be more than happy to respond

of the devices verizon has the offer at this moment, this is the best 4G LTE device and I would get it again. i really love this device and recommend it to anyone looking for an lte phone. yes, it is a little laggy out of the box but that's just because of touchwiz and RFS. Once you root it and voodoo it (convert the file system to EXT4) the phone is way faster and more responsive.
in addition to this, there is no use waiting for something else. on the horizon, the only other LTE device coming up is the BIONIC and because it's a motorola its probably going to have a locked bootloader. it will also be much bulkier, heavier, and include blur. other than that, the galaxy s II (if it ever comes out on verizon) probably won't be LTE.
also, make sure you get this before the 7th so you get unlimited data.

Will I like this Phone?

Due to several issues with ATT support and service my wife and I paid our ETFs to terminate our contract. The other night we were looking at T-Mobile and found a cheaper but better plan then what is offered by ATT and the free G2Xs, we jumped on board.
My question is will we like this phone? I have been doing some reading and it sounds like there might be some hardware or software issues. What is the general consensus on this forum about the phone overall? I'm coming from an HTC Aria which was rooted and running an AOSP build and I love it. My wife is coming from a 3GS, which she loves but is willing to try Android.
My phone is perfectly fine, I've only run into reboots when messing with voltages in setCPU.
Cyanogenmod nightly and fauxs kernel works brilliantly.
If you like a crazy fast phone with amazing graphics rendering and fantastic sound then you will love the phone. With Gingerbread most of the problems have been mitigated. Plus you got in on the free deal so you can't beat the price.
You'll like it.

Ever since I updated 2.3.3 (did it only to get baseband) phone is solid. Had growing pains but I'm happy with it. Might just sell the myTouch 4G spare I have. I see no need to move back to it.
Just make sure its updated with latest 2.3.3 you can flash a custom ROM. Can't speak for 2.3.3 because haven't used a stock ROM in ages.
Hardware wise its best phone, despite the bad PR
Why come to Tmobile if you are trying to leave AT&T, when it is very possible that Tmobile will be AT&T soon?
I just got my free g2x. My reboots are only when the phone gets hot which is on the wall charger. When it's charging on my PC its fine. I love it though and will give it more time.

Phone is awesome. LG/Tmobile firmware is decent with the GB upgrade. If you flash a custom rom to this thing then it is freaking amazing. Its a very powerful phone. The unlocked bootloader gives us so much freedom for customizing. Whether you decide to flash roms or not, use the nvflash tool in the development section to put clockworkmod recovery on your phones. Its much more useful than stock recovery, and if you ever want to flash a rom you're all set to do so. Just remember to revert back to stock recovery (using the same nvflash tool) if you have to ever return the phones to T-Mobile for any reason.

They charge slower, and keep the temperature down. I have like 3 of these hanging around.

Contact tmobile and have them setup your account with visual voicemail, it's free.
I love this phone, +1 for what everyone else said. Its got its issues but its still the best phone out there. The screen resolution IMO beats out any Samsung samoled, hands down. The bad news for you though is that it's more than likely going to be a snafu for you if you go with tmo. It looks like att will be buying them as of next year some time. I hear the FCC will approved this. I hope its not true. Gl

My phone works fine now after about 5-6 of them but their giving this phone away for free for a reason and that's because its a piece of crap. Never has a phone with this good a specs gone down in price so quickly and even given away for free for the second or third time. Probably should of got a HTC Sensation or MT4G Slide would of definitely been better of.

My previous phone was a HTC Aria, small and under powered compared to the new phones on the market. That being said I love the Aria; easy to root and very durable. I have looked into newer HTC devices and I have "read" that the sensation has some design issues or flaws with the screen? Digitizer? I don't think you'll find a phone out there without problems. I gave the G2X a try because I didn't want to spend any money on new phones considering I have paid my way out of an ATT contract. If the Phone is crap I can go back to my unlocked Aria.
You will run into many problems like auto shutdown/reboot, screen bleed and hit/miss wifi. This phone doesn't work out of the box. Don't waste your time on this phone. I would wait for next Nexus or a Galaxy S2.

Have you ever considered running errant apps has caused your problems? My G2X has been updated to GB, never reboots, never lockups, the wifi is perfect and screen bleed is a non issue. I never use my phone in a dark room with the brightness turned all the way up with a black background. That is the only way to see the so-called screen bleed. All IPS backlight displays have it, and I have had it on every notebook I have ever owned. It is normal and for normal usage a complete non issue. I am using my phone stock and unrooted.

[Q] Should I buy the Sidekick 4G?

Hello everyone ! I have a pretty general question for you guys. Should I buy the sidekick 4G ?*
Here's the story:
I'm switching carriers (MetroPCS>T-Mobile). So I am planning to get tmobile prepaid $50 a month. This means I have to purchase the phone for 299 instead of the 79 with a 2 year agreement. I don't so much mind spending that amount of money if the phone is worth it ( although that is as much as I'd pay for a phone) .*
does the phone live up to what it claims to do ? I just need it to do what it claims to do , right. *
I just want to hear what you guys think since you own the phone !
Thank you in advance !
Its an okay device. It just has to much going on for me to like it, as I'm talking about the user interface. The specs are decent, but with all these dual core processors out there, this phone really can't match them. The only pro to the phone is it does have a nice keyboard...if your into physical keyboard phones. There's my two cents haha..
Pure meXdroidMod!
No....if you don't mind spending a little more, you should get the HTC Sensation.
The only thing the Sidekick 4G has going for it is the keyboard...that's all.
The HTC Sensation destroys it in all other aspects.
The sidekick has a longer battery life than the g2x n most likely the sensation (19 days)

Thanks for the replies !
My only worry is that the phone is laggy when using normal operations such as texting, phone dialing, occasional web browsing. I don't plan on using the device for anything 'heavier' than that, I have an iPad and an iPod touch that I can use for heavier operations at home . I just want a reliable phone
What are your experiences on normal day to day use ? In terms of OS functionality and 'smoothness'.
Ps. Woah the sensation is very expensive haha I'm afraid it's out of my price range.
This phone is not that bad, if your just a standard user for texting and web surfing with a qwerty keyboard too then I say get it. So far I haven't much down fall with this phone since I rooted and added gingerclone update2 asop. And since this my 2 android phone coming from mytouch 3g its a big difference. Hope this help with your phone shopping.

It's a nice phone, once you get a few things changed (imho). Don't expect much sk4g specific mods to it though, what you get is basically what you have to stick with, unlike some other android phones with alot more dev love.
I send 20000 texts a month I use 6gigs of my data I love this phone I've flashed the roms and gingerclone v2 is the best and fastestthe messaging app in it has the option to press enter and reply and press the back button to the web page I'm surfing and it works great I love the keyboard at first you won't but after an hour of using it it is amazing

So I went with the sidekick and I'm liking everything on it until today.... :\ I started experienced the whole freezing issue on the phone. The touch screen locks up and the only way to use it is by either turning it off and back on or by moving with the optical trackball.
I have been reading around that the update that tmobile released is what caused these problems on the sidekick, what a shame. I checked my firmware version and it matches that of the newest update.
Which brings me to two questions;
1) can I flash the original firmware provided in these forums, in order to 'revert' or 'downgrade' ? Is the firmware universal that it would work on any sidekick ?
And
2) how do I flash recovery mod ? I'm having a bit of trouble understanding the tutorial on how to do it from these forums . Everytime I boot into recovery I have the original recovery by android (I think) pressing 'reinstall packages' (can't quite remember the exact name but its the only option that sounds like that) is the only way to load up clockwork mod. I don't want to use clockwork like that because I feel that it is a light flash on my phone and id like to be able to boot directly into it.
Anyways I know the post might be long but I hope I get some responses once again to get this resolved ! Its a shame really that the update bugged the phone, because the phone is superb when its working fine.
Thanks again !

As for the recovery question, the fake flash CWM (what you have) is just fine, and works the same way as a normal CWM that's built into the kernel (boots straight into it). If you reallly want a built in CWM, you could flash the Bali kernel, which has CWM built in, otherwise just use fake flash.

What is the downside?

So I have an Evo 4g on sprint. I love it. My parents have the family plan on ATT and my dad is up for a new phone. Apparently he can get the Inspire for free. He wont be rooting or anything like that. Are there any problems we should be aware of. GPS, signal problems, etc?
I guess I just want to know if this is a solid phone that he can use to look up stuff on the internet that we are arguing about and I think he wants to use the caddie golf apps his friends use. Is it basically just the ATT version of my evo? If it is, I would definitely recommend it in a heartbeat.
Thanks
All and all, the Inspire is a good phone, though it lacks a front camera, if that even matters.
Lack of front camera won't be an issue. I am more looking for issues that come up a month or two that make people regret buying the phone.
I've had it since release day and still have no issues with it. He may not be happy with battery life and the fact that there really aren't any options for extended batteries because of the phone's design.

Some people have issues with the GPS antenna not being properly attached and therefore getting poor reception. I think I have that issue, but it doesn't affect me enough to require me taking it in. Some people do have to do that though
It's been a great phone form me. Even if you just root it with a stock rom and a different kernal, you should be able to squeeze some more batt life out of it, plus you'll get rid of the att bloatware.
Yeah, pretty much the only downside is the ATT bloatware, if you can live with it then by all means I recommend this phone without rooting it at all...if you're like me and want full control and the ability to customize certain things rooting would be the way to go. When I was stock and rooted I haven't had any issues with internet, service or signal..aside from the occasional dead zones in my office and my girlfriend's work( hospitals so go figure). From what it sounds like, the way your dad wants to use the phone, I think he'll be happy with it.
The only issue I've had was mentioned above. Due to the design, I had serious signal issues that got worse over time. I got a warranty replacement and could immediately tell the difference in signal strength with the new one. Some ppl have this issue, some don't. He can always get a warranty replacement if he ends up with a lemon. Other than that, I love this phone and would definitely recommend it.
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA App
This is by far my favorite yet. I for one have had no issues, I think he will love it.
Sent from my HTC Inspire 4G using xda premium
The bad part is that it really will depend on the device you get. Might take you a few tries to get a "perfect" device and it might not. If your dad is having you help him with a choice then my only advice would be to look at what he really is gonna do with it and get a device that fits him.
I have had no issues with mine and to honest I am happy with it to the point of waiting awhile before I upgrade, it does everything I need it to do easily and as long as I am not working on a beta Rom pretty reliable. Lol
Thanks for the replies guys. It helps. I think my dad just wants a phone like mine to look up stuff and play with apps. I have the EVO on sprint, and I seem to like everything except the battery life. I just want him to have a phone he can have fun playing with apps like the gps golf app and such, and doesn't have to worry about trying to get the darn phone to work all the time. For instance my samsung epic had serious GPS issues and it made apps that used the gps hard to use cause the gps hardware in the phone sucked.
I figured at $30, he would be getting a pretty good phone.

[Q] To upgrade or not to upgrade?

Basically, i'm up for an upgrade on my account with AT&T and trying to decide if I want to get the Skyrocket or wait until something better comes out. Currently I have the LG Optimus 3D, or "Thrill 4g" as AT&T likes to call it. Its nice, pretty snappy and has the whole 3D gig which is a novelty at best.. The plan is to pass that one to my wife when I upgrade.
I really just want to hear some negatives about this phone. I've read a lot of reviews and 90% of them are about all the great features that are listed right on the box and thats not what I want to hear about.. I want the problems.. the things you cant get to work, apps that wont run correctly, your pet peeves with this phone. So that I can decide if your pet peeve would also be a deal breaker for myself(or anyone else reading this thread in the same situation).
I come here because I know you all will have poked and prodded the phone so much by now that you know everything there is to know about its REAL pros and cons.. the ones that matter, not "it didn't fit in my pocket" and "i like my iphone better".
Much appreciated in advance!
Other than the actual size of the phone, I haven't had a single problem. And the size doesn't bother me anymore.
Only complaint I have is that bluetooth sometimes disconnects and shuts off, can only be fixed by a reboot. I think this has been fixed in most recent UCLA3 update, but have only been on that version a couple days so too early to say for sure. Otherwise a decent phone.
If you don't need the cutting edge I say upgrade. If you do I'd wait 6 months and there will be something worth upgrading to.

For me the Note is too big, I'm not interested in a tablet as a phone.. If I were to get a tablet it'd be a separate entity. I need something to have with me in my pocket at work and when out to sea(I'm in the Navy). That's just my preference/situation tho, but thanks for the input!
Overall I haven't had any problems with mine that wasn't rom/software issue. I wish I could give you a few this sucks or that sucks but all and all it a great phone. I'm bad about jumping out off my truck with mine in my lap and still no cracks. Pretty close to unbrickable unless your a real moron, worse thing I can say about it is it's the first phone that I have been throttled every month I've had it (since november 6th) but the ****ing phone has so many radios in it change apn, flash t mobile radio that doesn't let lte come on and waaaaa laaaa keep on downloading. I want to upgrade to the note but I'm afraid it just won't add up. Sure we don't have a real cm, or a mui, but who gives a **** when we get ics and the way google releases new **** we will have had ics so long we are sick of it to just like we are with gingerbread.

Skyrocket is a really good phone, but I can't say it is a great phone. The CPU feels like it is a generation behind. 3D, UI, Xvid Playback all choppy in comparison to phones with Exynos CPUs. Dev support seem to be lacking, but it is slowly improving. LTE on the hand is amazing.
I feel that 3.5 months in, I'm already looking forward to Nov 2013 when my contract is up.
With that said, is there a better phone out there yet? No. If I needed a phone today, I'd still get a Skyrocket or a Note.
Thanks for all the fast feedback everyone! So far a great help. The fact that so many people - not only in the uneducated world but in the developers world - have had little to no complains about the phone speaks wonders. Probably going to head in tomorrow to pick up my own Skyrocket.
Unless you just get one that is made on monday or friday. You know the days lemons are made. You won't be disappointed

Verizon SG3 worth keeping?

Given Verizon's encrypted bootloader and highly unlikely chance that the developer version will help in unlocking this phone, is it still worth keeping? I haven't even taken the SG3 out of the FedEx box because I don't want to be stuck with an unmoddable phone. I currently have a Thunderbolt running ThunderShed's ROM with IMO's kernel, and do not want to give up that experience just for a shinier phone. What are your thoughts and opinions?
I'd say it's worth keeping till the end of the 14-day return period, hopefully the bootloader will either be cracked by then (of course, this date varies depending on when you got your phone), or it will become apparent that it's never going to be cracked.

I just received the phone yesterday, so I have until 7/25 - a good chunk of dev time. I just really hope this doesn't turn out to be a Moto-esque debacle where it's a massive kludge.
One thing that I've noticed with this phone vs others: it works extremely well out of the box. Not only that but we're going to get JB. If modding is that super important to you, either wait for the next Nexus (not guaranteed to be on VZW), or get the current one. You're not going to get a totally moddable phone anymore unless you get the Nexus. Or you can just switch carriers for an unlocked GS3.
For myself: I'm tired of crackflashing. I'm tired of running the latest ROM release and working through bugs. I'm sick of things not working and constantly wiping over and over again. I wanted a phone that just worked well out of the box, and the GS3 is perfect for that. Of course this is entirely subjective, and your needs are obviously more inline with Nexus devices. I'd say if you don't want to put the bootloader status to chance, wait for the next Nexus.

Its extremely early to write off our chances of getting past the bootloader. Even with the encrypted bootloader there has been massives amount of progress, and the phone just hit the stores TODAY. Calling it an unmoddable phone isn't accurate, as we already have the ability to run custom kernels and roms, just not an unsigned boot image. Patience is key, but if you dont have any, return it and get a GNEX with its one gig of ram and 5mp camera

I was in the same boat op but after using mine I'm loving it. I came from a droid x running cm7gb and I miss things like hard button music control and other customization but the hardware makes up for it. I rooted using the new method and I love it even more. I'm confident that the devs will make progress. IMO the gap between stock and custom is a lot smaller on this phone. Once jb comes to it it will be insane even if it's a samsung version.

Yes, you can purchase a totally new phone for $600 if you're up for the expense. It's not a simple software download.
Thanks guys. I think I'm gonna go ahead and fire it up for the time being. Worst case, I can return it in a couple weeks if the stock ROM is too annoying. Best case, the bootloader gets cracked like my Thunderbolt. Most likely, I'll just stop worrying and love the bomb. It sounds like the OEMs have realized we don't want messy, bloated, slothy interfaces gumming up our phones.

Well, just wanted to add a final note to this. I'm trying to return it and go back to my Thunderbolt. The radio is terrible compared to that phone, constantly dropping wifi and 3G/4G. The phone keeps locking to a black screen requiring a battery pull to restart it. Just not worth the aggravation.

I plan on keeping the SG3 until the nexus comes out hopefully on Verizon.

Maybe you got a dud. I know (myself included) 8 people who already have these phones, plus many many on here and none have your issues. Yeah, your signal is reported differently than htc phones, but what gives there.
It's definitely worth keeping. I have came from iphones and various android devices such as the htc evo, motorola droid razr and the samsung galaxy nexus for verizon and I love the samsung s3. Out of all these devices even with the extended battery on them this battery/phone out performs the other phones.

Exactly, this phone is awesome
Hmmm, a couple of people mentioned that they are tired of modding and crackflashing? Why are you still here on xda? I buy android so I can feed my addiction of owning new phones without actually changing devices. I look forward to new mods and roms.
Oh ya, with all the new development, almost everything can be done with the so called locked bootloader. I'm running the new cm10 /jelly Bean as my daily driver. #screwyouverizon
